Natural styled kitchen design

A sleek and space-conscious kitchen with a contemporary yet natural look

“With generous wall storage, a warm mix of neutral tones and the latest in high-tech appliances, the owners knew exactly how they wanted the space to look. At their request, we overhauled their cramped, dated melamine kitchen and replaced it with this free-flowing design. High-gloss cabinets were selected for a contemporary look, while a natural-looking palette based on Dulux Candidate keeps the kitchen from being too modern. The neutral tones tie in well with the timber flooring to create a homely space that the owners love.” Designer: Stuart Dougall for Melbourne Contemporary Kitchens

Expert tip: Well positioned downlights bring high-gloss cabinets to life.

We love: The unique, all-natural colour choice.

Elegance in Kitchen Design

A grand, elegant kitchen, with a large, provincial-styled space

“The owners wanted a provincial-style kitchen with the latest fittings. The new cooking area is a grand and striking space that’s also highly functional. Decorative elements including corbels, mantle and Corian benchtop make this kitchen. It’s also very spacious and offers a huge amount of storage, as well as a large island that allows multiple people to work in the kitchen at the same time. As we needed extra depth in the appliance cabinet to accommodate a microwave, we positioned the appliance area bench beneath the stairs to the second level to maximise space. Located in the middle of a grand open room with cathedral ceilings, with a dining area on one side and the lounge on the other, the kitchen is now the focus and centre of the home.”
Designer: Markus Sawatzki for Let’s Talk Kitchens

We love: The elegant pendant lights that enhance the kitchen’s provincial design.

Modern kitchen symmetry

Within an old bungalow lives a crisp white Kitchen, renovated perfectly in Shaker style.

“This Shaker-style kitchen is housed in an old-look bungalow and was designed with angles and symmetry in mind. An external window was installed to frame the space, creating some much-needed balance and softening the hard lines of the drawers. A crisp white palette works perfectly in the naturally lit space, while a Carrara marble island provides bench space for entertaining and practical food preparation. In keeping with the fresh take on a traditional design, sleek handles and modern appliances were chosen to finish off the kitchen. The press tinned splashback and decorative pendant light add the perfect dash of femininity.”

Real Kitchen: Slick u-shaped kitchen design

A slick U-shape kitchen design by Designer Kitchens makes the most of storage and light in this high rise apartment

“Not content with the standard kitchen that came with their new high-rise apartment, the owners were quick to renovate and tailor the design to their needs. The motto “there’s a place for everything and everything in its place” guided the design, which was all about maximising space. It made sense to change the typical U-shape kitchen and put in an island, which instantly freed up movement in and around the kitchen. Contrary to the trend of thick benchtops, we used a 20mm white stone with a shadow line to avoid it looking bulky in the small space.

Typically, large developments mostly put in cupboards because they’re cheaper, but the new design features more drawers as they provide better storage. A whole wall of white doors that extends from the kitchen to the living room provides essential yet unobtrusive storage. Reflecting light and space is also achieved by the mirrored glass splashback and white palette. Chocolate tones and finishes were combined to add warmth, colour and individuality. The wood grain Laminex finish links the top cupboards with the front of the island bench and the wine rack, for a cohesive and interesting look amongst the largely white, open space. I think the owners’ decision to be more adventurous with colour and finishes has paid off.”

Kitchen project on deck

Phil O’Brien from Designer Kitchens talks about his latest modern, innovative and enduring kitchen design

“We designed the client’s original kitchen some 10 years ago, and as the family has grown and their needs have changed, they approached us to create this new design. The previous kitchen was half the size, so we extended the space to include the area where a deck used to be.

Although the design is modern with lots of clean lines, it’s timeless because of the classic colour palette we selected. The kitchen features loads of benchtop space and storage, as well as an office area to keep mail and other paperwork out of sight. We used Blum’s electronic Servo-Drive system for the wall cabinets, which open to the touch and close with the press of a button. The 60mm thick benchtop is a design feature as it creates visual impact. Drawers are used throughout the kitchen as they are the best option for storage.”

After being in the business for three generations, the Gervasoni family has had time to perfect the perfect sofa. This very aptly named sofa is made with a modern pattern favoured by the French textile industry, and is perfect for curling up on during a cold winter’s day with your favourite cup of tea.

A definitive linear design, the Tufty Time from B&B Italia is a combination of modernity. The Tufty Time’s surface is covered with decorative stitching that creates various tones and hues on the fabric, a notable design.

Able to engulf you in its soft embrace, the Boa sofa from Edra resembles a large nest that can accommodate many people. Containing no frame, Boa is constructed from 100 meters of tubular velvet filled with polyurethane chips and goose down. It is manually woven with four expert hands to form a large irregular weave.

Available as a sofa, divan or corner sofa with a stool and easy chair, Minima from Offecct is as versatile as it is eye catching. Constructed around a timber frame, Minima’s soft rounded edges and bright blue fabric make it an encouraging seating option.
