With a lack of storage and cramped quarters being the main quirks of their old space, the owners wanted a larger and more functional layout along with a greater storage capacity for their new kitchen.

A reimagined layout made the most of the existing floor space and opened up the design. Nestled within the L-shaped outer edge of the kitchen sits a large island with benchtop seating, offering plenty of prep space and casual dining opportunities.

Overhead cabinetry with glass-fronted doors placed either side of the cooktop generates attractive display storage, while Shaker-style lower cabinetry in the island and around the perimeter provides functional places around the prep and cook areas to stow essential cooking equipment.

Along the back wall, floor-to-ceiling Shaker cabinetry stretches the outer limits of the kitchen zone by creating a purposeful pantry.

A high-contrast colour scheme of black and white with bamboo accents underscores the modern yet classic design. Lithostone Carrara White stone waterfalls over the kitchen island and covers the surrounding benchtops. Warm veining threaded through the marble-look splashback material pulls the monochromatic colour palette together with the rich bamboo accents, and a white sliding barn door with matt black hardware adds a touch of contemporary country to

To meet the owners’ tight deadlines, the sinks, tapware, cabinetry, in OptiMatt Anthracite, and countertops, in Marabella by Stone Ambassador, were all ordered online for the kitchen and laundry from the Modulr+ range.

The integrated InAlto dishwasher, microwave, cooktop, oven and rangehood were chosen from the online offerings too, as were the Voda profile handles and internal storage solutions. It was the Australian-made joinery, manufactured using a revolutionary and highly durable bonding technique, that really simplified the process though, arriving pre-assembled – with customised storage solutions and soft- close drawers already installed – within weeks.

The sleek, minimalist kitchen and laundry were functional almost immediately and the resulting kitchen layout caters perfectly to the need for ample storage and easy entertaining. Tall overhead cabinets negate the need for bulkheads and optimise space, while a generous floor plan, large island and breakfast bar allow for small and large gatherings.

The brief was clear: to craft a space with soft edges at the entry and a functional island that would be a standout feature. And the company delivered brilliantly.

The centrepiece of the kitchen is the island stone bench with its elegant 80mm bullnose edge. The Art Deco-inspired curved plinth and door panels were no easy feat during manufacturing, but in the end, a breathtaking and one-of-a-kind design element was achieved.

High-end materials and finishes were expertly incorporated, with brass accents, Calacatta marble countertops and ambient lighting strips along the ceiling and under the benchtops elevating the space to new heights of sophistication. The overall atmosphere exudes luxury and refinement.

The challenge of relocating the kitchen from its tucked-away corner to a more functional space next to the living/dining area was met with skilful planning. Fitting cabinetry and appliances into existing cavities required careful consideration that thankfully brought about a seamless integration.

A new services plan was put in place to ensure electrical and plumbing functions worked flawlessly in the new location. Ingeniously, the existing fuse box was discreetly incorporated into the cabinetry.

Creating a walkway from the entrance to the kitchen/living area posed its own set of design hurdles, but the designer masterfully blended the cabinetry’s curved edges into the kitchen, ensuring both aesthetics and practicality were achieved. The final outcome is a kitchen that not only meets, but exceeds the clients’ vision and expectations.

A generous island bench in the middle of the kitchen complements the surrounding counterspace and provides enough room to prepare feasts for her family.
