Revered world-wide, Danish design is known for its pure forms, timeless simplicity and exceptional craftsmanship, and nowhere is this more beautifully embodied than in the iconic VOLA tap range.

In 1968, VOLA revolutionised the modern tap, drawing inspiration from the original designs of Danish masters, Arne Jacobsen and Verner Overgaard. Today, VOLA continues to be celebrated for its timeless design and recognised by architects and interior designers as a hallmark of quality.

The unique VOLA modular design system offers flexibility with a near-limitless array of product configurations and a choice of bold colours and enduring finishes. Although refinements have been made over the years – focussed solely on enhancing the internal mechanisms to ensure longevity – the product proportions remain faithful to the original designs, guaranteeing
aesthetic consistency.

e&s

Every product is crafted to order in the Danish factory, where time-honoured craftsmanship combines with state-of-the-art engineering to ensure the highest standards of quality and durability. By exclusively utilising premium stainless steel and brass, and prioritising bespoke production over mass manufacturing, meticulous soldering, polishing and thorough individual hand testing is ensured.

One of VOLA’s most venerated products is the Arne Jacobsen-designed KV1 kitchen mixer tap. In fact, it is so iconic that in 1974 it was admitted into the permanent design collection of MoMA in Manhattan, and it is displayed in Copenhagen’s Designmuseum Denmark.

When the KV1 was initially introduced more than five decades ago, it represented a bold departure from traditional design aesthetics. Today, its gentle curves and detailed junctions are still celebrated, as is the effortless way it blends technology with timeless design. The mixer is fitted with ceramic disc technology, an impressive double swivel spout, and a water-saving aerator. It is most commonly found in the kitchen but can also be used for bathrooms and laundry areas.

e&s

Ensuring its design flexibility, the KV1 is available in a truly dazzling array of finishes, from vivid red, blue, green and pink to matt black and a range of marvellous metallics – brushed copper and gold, natural brass, polished chrome and more.

VOLA’s exquisite, hand-finished range is available from e&s, one of Victoria’s oldest family owned specialist kitchen, bathroom and laundry retailers. Known for high-quality appliances and products, as well as impeccable service, e&s has been highly respected within the Australian design industry since the 1960s.

You can peruse the diverse selection of premium products, including the timeless VOLA range, at one of the nine e&s showrooms across Melbourne (Abbotsford, Blackburn, Chadstone, Essendon, Geelong, Hawthorn, Moorabbin, Prahran and Preston) or the ACT showroom (Fyshwick), all of which are open seven days a week.

Turning a drab bathroom into an experiential space is a top priority for many homeowners, and designer Kate Carter certainly delivered on this brief. The transformation of this bathroom highlights the incredible potential of turning a lacklustre space into a stunning sanctuary—an inspiring example of what’s possible with well-planned design.

One of the primary goals for this renovation was to address the lack of storage in the existing bathroom. By incorporating under-vanity joinery and a strategically positioned integrated shelf detail within the Epoque Ivory wall tiles for hair and body wash products, the space was elevated to provide both functionality and style.

Austaron Surfaces

The custom fluted glass shower, framed in black with cross bars, pairs beautifully with the aged brass tapware, while the rich navy tiles add depth and sophistication. This combination is eye-catching during the day and transforms into a serene retreat at night, with soft lighting highlighting the textured surfaces.

Complementing the crisp white window architraves, Staron was chosen for the double vanity, featuring seamlessly integrated Staron basins. Staron not only adds to the bathroom’s visual appeal but also ensures effortless cleaning. Impervious to water, Staron Solid Surfaces is an ideal material for a wide range of applications in bathroom fitouts, offering both durability and elegance.

Austaron Surfaces

Working within the existing footprint, Kate transformed the bathroom from a dull, uninspiring space into a tranquil, elegant sanctuary. The result is a place of escape and relaxation—a true retreat for adults to unwind in style.

Austaron Surfaces

This bathroom was just one of four that were renovated simultaneously. For the master ensuite it was to be cohesive with the rest of the homes interiors but also feel just that little bit elevated compared to the family bathroom. For consistency Kate used the Staron integrated vanity tops and basins, custom stained timber veneer vanity joinery and the fluted glass across the bathrooms.

Radiant and refined, this luxe powder room shows how the smallest room in the house offers a unique opportunity to break free from traditional bathroom design expectations.

Powder Room with Lighting in the walls

These spaces can be playful, surprising … even a conversation starter for guests. This particular powder room, a close design collaboration between the owners and custom builders, Resi Homes, does just that. A captivating interplay of light and texture greets guests, with the Flame-patterned Mario Romano Walls from Austaron Surfaces elevating the room’s aesthetics. Multiple meticulously carved panels form an organic, non-repeating texture that flows flawlessly along the walls. Thanks to Mario Romano Walls’ puzzle piece-like interlocking design with undulating edges, the joins are inconspicuous. The result is a stunning and seamless visual display that transforms the small space into a work of art. The mesmerising effect is amplified by sensor lighting that instantly illuminates the walls and generates a soft, ambient glow when the powder room is entered.

All A-Glow | Austaron Surfaces

Moreover, the three-dimensional panel carvings are beautifully echoed in the reflections cast on the adjacent Nero Marquina marble tiles, which serve as a dark and moody backdrop to the classic Parisi Hermitage pedestal basin. This stunning powder room elegantly illustrates how easily Mario Romano Walls can be used to fashion a visually impactful light feature in any interior space. There are more than 40 patterns to choose from and custom designs can be created. Each panel is carved to precise, project-specific requirements, ensuring a perfect fit and an exceptional design outcome. Installation is simple and when paired with a lightbox, the back-lit panels engender an enthralling ambience that transforms any space. To further enhance the effect, multi-colour LED systems can be incorporated. These allow effortless mood shifts, adding depth and versatility to the lighting design and ensuring a truly unforgettable experience.

In a renovated Queenslander, an impractical kitchen that was looking dated needed a fresh new look, and had to be better suited to its owners who love to entertain.

Winner: Small Bathrooms QLD

KBDI Awards Winner | Melinda Fritz: Elegant in Design

The walk-in pantry was transformed into a cooking alcove, with a second cleaning alcove placed on the adjacent wall. The kitchen’s storage was tripled thanks to three-stack purpose-built drawers. A second wine fridge was added adjacent to the bifold doors leading to the barbecue area, and a cocktail station is neatly tucked away behind pocket doors.

Laundry room blue themed

A fresh blue and green colour palette was chosen for the kitchen, contrasting with the black and brass accents. At an inner-city penthouse, the main bathroom was created by combining the existing bathroom, powder room, laundry cupboard and hallway into the one room.

KBDI Awards Winner | Melinda Fritz: Elegant in Design

A mix of large format and metallic mosaic tiles were selected to complement the striking epoxy floor and bounce light around the room. The shower over the bath was replaced with a modern walk-in shower. Motion sensors allowed for a night light under the vanity, and for both a light and fan to be automatically turned on when someone enters the shower. Heated vertical towel rails utilised the available wall space and provided a practical drying solution.

Blue and Silver Bathroom Mirror and sink

The third project, a New Farm Art Deco apartment’s bathroom, also had a revamp, with a muted, natural palette and light-timber cabinetry chosen to give it a natural look and feel.

This renovation was nominated for the KBDI Design Awards 2024 in the Small Bathrooms Qld/ Small Kitchen Qld. The KBDI Design Awards program is a well-established and highly regarded event held annually to showcase Australia’s top kitchen and bathroom designers.

A temple to practicality, Lion Ox, a specialist in bathroom renovations, was tasked with transforming this outdated bathroom into a modern haven for bathing, accompanied with all the functionality a busy family needs.

A Neutral Suite

Though limited in space, the homeowners desired a separate freestanding tub and walk-in shower. Given the size parameters, the dilemma was solved with the inclusion of a back-to-wall bath that saves on floor space. A single-basin vanity further ensured that all the client’s wishes were fulfilled within the space allocated to the main bathroom.

Tap basin in light features and black tap

When it came to design, the owners wanted a neutral space that would stand the test of time and provide a relaxing atmosphere. Large-format porcelain tiles in a lightly veined pattern of warm grey and white were laid across the floor and up three of the walls, all the way to the ceiling. This solid foundation was complemented by a single feature wall of white finger tiles behind the bath. The textural effect produced by the linear feature tiles adds visual interest but maintains the calm feel of the room.

A Neutral Suite

The vertical pattern formed by the finger tiles is reflected in the bathroom’s single vanity and off set by the soft curves of the single round basin. The grooved vanity front keeps the pattern flowing while contributing additional depth to the design to make it contemporary yet timeless. A sleek mirrored cabinet above the vanity affords the inhabitants additional face-level storage. Finishing off the design with matt black tapware that grounds the light-hued palette, this bathroom is a contrasting scheme softened by textural features that create a simple yet elegant bathroom.

Autoflo / AutoAqua was the first company in Australia to develop and produce electronic tapware in 1985.

The original design had a unique, internationally patented feature being the “safety run timer,” which has since been adopted by all electronic tap manufacturers, a testament to the innovative nature of the company.

In the late 1990s Autoflo was acquired by an electronics manufacturing company in Melbourne. This acquisition helped the company diversify its product range and cleverly incorporate electronic sensing into new bespoke tapware, setting a lead followed by other sensor tap manufacturers. The local design and manufacturing capability gives Autoflo a distinct advantage over competitors that import and supply off-the-shelf products.

Water tap in Kitchen

As a local manufacturer, Autoflo works with architects and interior designers to develop the best product for the application, which may include customised features in operation with a range of finishes to complement the design palette.

In addition to their branded Autoflo / AutoAqua range of products, they have designed and manufactured an exclusive range of kitchen and bathroom tapware
for the Reece Group.

AutoFlo understands that electronic tapware is not in the standard plumber’s manual, which is why they have a full-time customer service and technical resource available to offer input at the design or concept stage on projects and support during or after installation if required.

A conscious collaboration of ideas between the home-owners and designer, the gorgeous bathrooms and laundry you see here were updated as part of a whole-of-house refresh within a classic 1880s cottage.

Scandi-Inspired Bathrooms: Custom Craftsmanship with Greens Tapware, the homeowners loved all things Scandi and were keen on custom joinery and brass accents for their main bathroom and master ensuite. These three things were worked into the design to create a romantic and charming aesthetic within both bathroom spaces.

Scandi-Inspired Bathrooms: Custom Craftsmanship with Greens Tapware

The master ensuite and main bathroom both showcase a curved American oak vanity with matching detail on the Caesarstone surfaces. The brass tapware and matching shower collections from Greens Tapware complemented the brass accents that appear throughout the home.
