Gas and open wood fireplaces: examining the difference

With countless ways to heat your home, things can get confusing,
so we’ve done the research on gas and open fireplaces for you

Two worlds collide and leave the humble consumer somewhere in the middle. So what’s the difference between gas and open wood fireplaces? Responsibly sourced and managed forest plantations provide eco-friendly wood to burn while clean energy means that gas can also have a less-harmful effect on the   environment.

But there are reasons and circumstances that make one more suitable than the other. “A gas fireplace is ideal for people who are time poor and want the convenience of a fire that can be controlled via remote,” says Tony Styles, director of Heatmaster. Gas fireplaces from Heatmaster can even be pre-set to turn on and off at predetermined times, meaning you can come home to a warm house that’s been anticipating your arrival. Likewise, setting it to turn on 30 minutes before you wake up can see chilly winter mornings and a mad dash to the shower fade to a distant memory.

Alternatively, wood fireplaces create an unparalleled ambience, a warm glow and a humble atmosphere that alludes to simpler times. “The open wood fires in the Heatmaster range are available in a zero-clearance model, which means they can be easily installed into a timber frame,” says Tony. So there’s not much to worry about in terms of installation. “The Heatmaster gas fires utilise a unique, flexible flue system, which makes installation very easy. It can be done while building or retrofitted into an existing home.”
