With more than 35 years of experience across the UK, USA and Western Australia, where the practice has been based for the past 13 years, Designs by Andrea is known for its broad range of considered design concepts, carefully tailored to complement each client’s individual home. A long-standing member of KBDi for over a decade, Andrea Vaughan won the 2024 KBDi All Kitchens for WA, and for this year’s awards submitted kitchen, bathroom and laundry projects.
There is something wonderfully atmospheric about this 1920s Maylands kitchen, where the romance of its Art Deco and Californian bungalow heritage meets a darker, more contemporary sensibility. Designed by Designs by Andrea, the scheme retains the original layout and flooring, allowing the home’s history to remain quietly present beneath a richly layered new interior.
Acacia Granite takes centre stage, its warm, tactile surface fl owing across the benchtops and splashback with an earthy sense of permanence. Florentine Walnut Polytec cabinetry introduces the depth and grain of timber, while open shelving and textured black base units build a palette of deep green, black and natural tones.
Urban brass details catch the light throughout, from tapware and handles to the sink and shadow line cabinetry, bringing a soft metallic warmth to the darker palette. A sculptural brass Sirius pendant rangehood provides a striking focal point, its refined industrial character sitting comfortably within the home’s period bones.
Fully integrated appliances maintain a seamless visual rhythm, while black appliances reinforce the kitchen’s sultry character. Blum corner drawers maximise storage without interrupting the streamlined aesthetic.
The result is an immersive kitchen where heritage and contemporary design are entwined, creating a space that feels both deeply grounded and confidently current.
Wrapped in deep, enveloping tones, the Maylands bathroom turns heritage restraint into something distinctly sultry. Designed by Designs by Andrea, dramatic green marble tiles provide the hero moment, their rich veining echoed in the wall sconces to create visual depth and cohesion.
Florentine Walnut shadow line cabinetry brings warmth against the marble, while Acacia Granite benchtops introduce a rugged, tactile counterpoint. Black subway tiles and Portland Black flooring intensify the cocooning atmosphere, with tiling extending to 2100mm before giving way to black-painted walls and ceilings.
Black sanitaryware, including the sculptural bath and toilet, heightens the drama, softened by the warmth of Urban Brass tapware and fittings. A generous twin shower introduces symmetry while relocated original glass block windows and a reused kitchen window improve continuity and sustainability without compromising the home’s existing character.
