This modern kitchen is an artful fusion of country-style elements and beautiful functionality. Before the renovation, the galley kitchen restricted movement. It also had a sense of disconnect to the rest of the open-plan living spaces. It was dark, due to a single window and heavy timber cabinetry from floor to ceiling, and there were storage issues that needed to be addressed.

During the renovation, the existing skylight was replaced with a clear glass version, and two large windows fitted to invite in more light. The cabinet doors and panels in two-pack finish add a touch of elegance. A custom island bench replaced the L-shaped benchtop, offering plenty of much-needed storage.

As part of the renovation, a wall was removed to add space and a sense of connectedness, as well as to increase the volume of natural light that filtered into the space. The final result is a beautiful custom kitchen that will serve the family for many years to come.

Let’s talk function first. The kitchen boasts Bosch and Samsung appliances, ABI tapware and Blum hinges and drawers – all perfect for a frequently used kitchen. The room’s working zones are flawless, with plenty of space to wash and prep ingredients, and set up small appliances when necessary. The island benchtop adds extra prep room, with the added benefit of seating on one side – just in case the homeowners want to eat casual meals or entertain dinner guests right where all the action is. The cabinetry facilitates plenty of storage while remaining stylish and on-theme.

Now to form. The kitchen’s aesthetic is a unique marriage of colour and geometry, thanks to cleverly selected materials and some creative thinking. The application of Staron in Sanded Mint on the benchtops brings the design to the next level, complementing the bold colour palette beautifully while contrasting the room’s warm timber surrounds. They reconfigured the space to create a more practical layout for the family of five, complete with a fresh and sophisticated design that pays homage to the home’s original character.

Preserving some of the home’s existing features was important to the family, so the design team balanced modern updates with the Victorian home’s timeless charm. Shaker-style cabinetry and The English Tapware Company tapware were chosen for this exact reason. An island benchtop was added to ensure plenty of prep space, extra seating space, and a discreet yet functional home for the family’s wine fridge. American Oak timber veneer in a walnut Serenastain applied to the island’s cabinetry to inject a little extra warmth to the room, while the stark green Perini subway tile splashback adds interest.

Let’s take a moment to admire the Lapitec surface in Bianco Serena, that adorns the kitchen’s splashbacks and benchtops, including the island benchtop. Effortlessly chic yet highly durable, these surfaces are a clever choice for frequently used workspaces like kitchen benchtops. Plus, they can be adapted to suit your home’s needs. In this kitchen, drain lines have been added to the surface, to ensure excess water drains straight into the sink without creating a mess on the benchtop.

One of the primary changes was aligning the farmhouse-style sink with the centre of the window, creating a balanced and aesthetically pleasing focal point. The redesign also improved accessibility to the corner cabinets, ensuring that every part of the kitchen is both beautiful and functional.

The kitchen is designed around large ovens, a farmhouse sink, and glass-door bar fridges, catering to both everyday cooking and entertaining needs. The rangehood canopy and overhead cabinets were extended to the ceiling, working with the bulkhead. To further enhance the classic charm, Federation-style cornices and decorative corbels around the rangehood add a distinctive character to the space.

A key element selected in this transformation is the use of Staron® Solid Surfaces in Collina Urbanity. Known for its seamless and non-porous properties, Staron was integrated into the benchtops, with routed drainers near the sink for both practicality and a clean aesthetic. One of our favourite benchtop solutions would have to be Staron. A zerosilica product, Staron has been available within Australia for many years, well before engineered stone became a popular benchtop option. This designer’s own home was crafted to embody the owner’s personalities and tastes, purposefully avoiding influence from current design and architectural trends. The brief called for a focus on available materials that could help create an authentically unique space. The bold, vibrant theme flows into the bathroom, where Staron’s California Poppy brings a dynamic touch to the vanity and mirror. Moving beyond the traditional lines and tones often seen in bathrooms, the design showcases the playful creativity of the designer, capturing a fresh, nonconformist aesthetic. With this mass timber construction, the oblique angles and offset geometry provide the dwelling with a unique style that lends itself to the windswept coastal location. 

The designer emphasises that Staron brings freedom to the creative process, unrestricted by standard geometric limitations often found with other products. Its colour range, durability, and ease of maintenance made Staron an ideal choice for these distinctive spaces. 

This home’s mass timber construction, with its oblique angles and offset geometry, adds a distinct character and echoes the coastal surroundings. The project, certified as a Passivhaus, embodies low-environmental-impact building principles, resulting in a sustainable space that prioritises the health and comfort of its occupants.
