A Semi-Industrial Urban Grunge Kitchen

Gallery

This fresh new build in Cornubia, south-east Queensland, presented various challenges at the initial planning stage.

Designer Lee Hardcastle of Enigma Interiors was ready to tackle the task of making best use of the space available.

One particular challenge Lee faced was to consider a series of structural steel elements, including a central pillar and necessary wall support posts. This was solved by creatively altering the position and shape of the island, and making the decision to have all steelwork as visible, striking features.

Another main consideration for this project was the modest allocated budget. Care was needed to ensure the final results would be impressive, functional and practical without exceeding the desired spend. This led to a careful, considered approach to the placement of features and the selection of finishes, making optimal use of each dollar.

Lee masterfully redesigned the kitchen and surrounding areas to create a more spacious and workable kitchen and pantry. This alluring, yet understated design, hosts slatted end panels, poured concrete benchtops and geometric timber-grain wall features. The dark palette and natural textures give this kitchen a semi-industrial, urban grunge theme. The slatted barn door with exposed track brings a rustic charm to the space and serves as a practical concealment to the pantry. Within the pantry there is plenty of room for storage and additional space for food preparation.

The outstanding results perfectly suit the home owner’s wants, needs and entertaining lifestyle, boasting a modern yet timeless aesthetic that won’t feel outdated any time soon. Overall, this extremely successful design is a highlight of the architectural home.
