Unique yet timeless, this warm and inviting kitchen proves that good design can overcome spatial limitations.

Designed by Martha Karas of Karas Design and built by Barnett Building, this kitchen is a feast for the eyes. Set inside a new extension of a heritage house, the light and airy space is worlds away from the home’s original kitchen. Where the old kitchen was dark and dingy, Martha and her team changed the footprint of the house to make way for a much brighter and more user-friendly kitchen setup. “The previous kitchen was old, small and dark,” says Martha. “By altering the home’s footprint, we were able to extend the space, which allowed us to design a larger and brighter kitchen with a big island and lots of storage and integrated appliances.”

Karas Design

While the kitchen is noticeably bigger than its predecessor, it is by no means a large space. “We had to use clever design to achieve everything we wanted and to make it practical and beautiful,” Martha adds. High ceilings and a long clerestory window can be credited for amplifying the space and making it appear larger than its square footage. Indeed, a number of strategically placed windows punctuate the kitchen, increasing the amount of light afforded to the room and allowing verdant outdoor vistas to infiltrate the space.

Adding to the kitchen’s practicality is the large statement island located in the centre of the room. Ideal for accommodating family gatherings, the island boasts a white countertop with a waterfall edge on one end and modern black frame on the opposite end. “We wanted the kitchen to feel modern without feeling out of place with the period features of the existing home,” shares Martha.

Karas Design

Another special feature, and one Martha is particularly fond of, is the tea station. Featuring gorgeous Japanese tiles and hidden behind pocket doors when not needed, this little nook transforms into a stunning feature when the doors are open.

Like what you see here? Martha is always up for a challenge, so consider Karas Design for your next project. With more than 25 years of architectural drafting experience and more than 15 years in interior design, Martha brings ample expertise and knowledge to guide clients through every step of the process.

Keen to update the dark, timber-style kitchen with a black granite benchtop that previously occupied this space, the homeowners approached Nobby Kitchens for a bright, modern upgrade. The former island was far too angular, and the raised servery made the room feel quite small. Fixing this during the renovation was high on the homeowners’ priority list.

They were after a forever kitchen, one in which they could share long family meals and entertain guests. They requested a two-tone kitchen and personally chose the timber colour that appears on the cabinets, hero lighting and rangehood canopy. They loved the look of Silestone in Ethereal Glow, so this was selected for the splashback behind the rangehood, as well as the island.

Nobby Kitchens

This kitchen’s new island is made for entertaining – it’s nearly 3m long, around 1.5m deep, and boasts plenty of bench space and extra seating. There’s also a bar fridge at the side of the island, making topping up drinks during dinner parties a piece of cake.

This kitchen is as functional as it is beautiful. There’s plentiful storage, including a dedicated appliance cabinet, push-to-open cabinetry at the back of the island, Blum soft-close drawers, and tall cabinetry with inner drawers. With so much storage space, keeping this kitchen sleek and uncluttered is incredibly simple. This entertainer’s dream was exactly what the homeowners were after to elevate their home life and dinner parties.

Design & build: Nouvelle Designer Kitchens & Bathrooms

The new owners of this spacious luxury unit in Mosman wanted a refresh to their outdated kitchen, laundry and joinery. Set in the iconic Thirri Tyirri building, something special was required.

Previously, widespread use of rather heavy timber and beige tones created a very sombre “brown” palette, which the owners were keen to change. A contemporary look with plenty of high-end design features was therefore a must. This was brilliantly achieved by the careful selection of each design element.

Nouvelle Designer Kitchens & Bathrooms

As the “hero” element, Laminex’s stunning Brushed Bronze metallic laminate, with its lovely warm coppery-gold tones, was selected for the curved rangehood, feature shelving and island support. This was perfectly paired with Polytec’s Florentine Walnut WoodMatt timber-look laminate, with its subtle woodgrain embossing, for the tall units along one of the walls. Resene Half Spanish White satin for the rest of the cabinets was then chosen to provide a neutral backdrop for the feature elements.

Naturally, a stunning benchtop and splashback was sought to do justice to the other elements. The honed Taj Mahal Quartzite meets the brief perfectly – subtle, luxurious and elegant.

Nouvelle Designer Kitchens & Bathrooms

On the practical side, additional storage was created by adding cabinets to a previously bare wall, which now also accommodates a wine fridge, making this area an ideal spot for a bar or servery.

Drawers were added to the front of the island. This did away with the previous typical front-facing overhang and was cleverly replaced with the side overhang supported by the feature curved metallic section to provide a place to sit at the island. This solution is not only practical, it also creates a visually beautiful feature, establishing a harmonious balance with the rangehood and feature shelves. The seating plan around the end of the island also makes for a more convivial way to sit, dine and converse.

Nouvelle Designer Kitchens & Bathrooms

Handleless cabinetry, pull-out bins and shelves, inner drawers, dedicated areas for tech items such as USB charging, as well as an appliance cabinet accessed with bifold doors all add to the functionality.

The Fisher & Paykel fully integrated ice-maker fridge and the Miele ovens were great choices to make for a clean look along the appliance wall. In other areas of the home, clever compact laundries and streamlined wardrobes were also renovated to create a lighter and fresher appearance.

Beautiful to look at, high quality, functional and timeless in style – that’s the signature Nouvelle design.

Design response

Objective

To transform an outdated kitchen, laundry and joinery into a sophisticated, modern space with high-end design elements

Solution

By incorporating premium materials, along with clever storage solutions and integrated appliances, the renovation achieved a timeless, functional and elegant aesthetic

Struggling with limited bench space and inadequate storage, the homeowners of this small and outdated kitchen were looking for something that more accurately reflected the grand proportions of their family home. Turning to Premier Kitchens for help, the owners requested a new kitchen design that would raise the aesthetic and functional level of the room to meet the rest of the house.

Choosing a bold, high-contrast colour palette of black and white, the design for the new kitchen included matt black cabinetry with a slimline shaker-style profile that gives it an element of modern glam. This contemporary touch ties in nicely with the steel framed and gridded sliding doors that stand between the kitchen and the outdoor space, creating a synergistic connection between the spaces.

However, it is perhaps the stone that truly makes this kitchen a standout. Large slabs of Paonazzo marble cover the long kitchen island, the back counter and the splashback. A small shelf of the same creamy marble also runs across the top of the splashback, creating an architectural shelf that is highlighted by integrated LED strip lighting. Rich, creamy and alive with strongly defined veining in black and brown hues, the Paonazzo marble elevates this kitchen from luscious to artform.

Integrated appliances ensure a sophisticated front across all the cabinetry in the culinary zone, while undermount sinks and a sleek inset induction cooktop keep the clean lines flowing across the counters.

Another standout in the space is the bespoke curved rangehood perched above the cooktop. Crafted of Navurban Elements™ Abstract Bronze, this cutting-edge surface technology offers a textural counterpoint to the silky surfaces that make up this kitchen. Its bronzed metallic finish adds a touch of warmth to the room and ties in nicely with the earthy hues dusting the marble.

Working with a sophisticated material selection, a timeless colour palette and a few architectural ‘wow’ moments, Premier Kitchens was able to lift the aesthetic appeal of this kitchen to maximum impact and give these owners the functionality it needed and the cohesive design they desired.

Design response

Objective

Increase the counter space and storage capacity while also raising the design quality of the room

Solution

Choosing a timeless and sophisticated design that utilised high-end materials that would stand the test of time proved a strategic move in achieving the design objectives of this project

What was once a dated and impractical kitchen has been transformed into a warm and sophisticated space by the design team. The original kitchen consisted of dated cream gloss cabinetry with a drab timber benchtop and an assortment of awkwardly sized drawers that didn’t meet the homeowner’s storage needs.

The new homeowners reached out to the experienced design team at Enigma Interiors to create a clean, elegant kitchen that integrates modern functionality seamlessly. The list of requests included minimal wall cabinetry, maximised drawer storage with practical sizing, and a cleverly concealed walk-in pantry. Integration was key, with fridges and the dishwasher also hidden within the cabinetry for a sleek, uninterrupted aesthetic.

Enigma interiors

Design-wise, this kitchen is a study in understated luxury. A custom-made Taj Mahal stone benchtop includes a generously sized sink integrated into the stone. The rich warmth of MODULO® timber batten by Screenwood adds natural texture, while the custom curved splashback offers a refined focal point. A gracefully curved rangehood and brass accents introduce soft visual interest.

One of the biggest challenges was working within the footprint of the existing layout to retain the original flooring. Enigma Interiors’ clever design ensured no unnecessary damage, making the renovation as seamless as possible. This kitchen now exudes warmth and elegance, perfectly tailored to the homeowners’ lifestyle – so much so they now plan to extend these design elements throughout the rest of their abode.

This home’s previous kitchen has survived three children and busy family life for 18 years and was due for an upgrade. The homeowners wanted their new culinary space to be perfect for family gatherings where several people could cook meals together.

The design team settled on an open-plan kitchen with an island bench that commands attention thanks to its sleek New York marble, waterfall edge and seating space. The area boasts a separate oversized butler’s pantry in which there’s plenty of space for more messy tasks like washing dishes. Though this involved increasing the size of some structural walls, it was well worth the effort as the family now has a large space to prep meals and wash up afterwards, away from the pristine main kitchen. Plus, the smaller appliances in the butler’s pantry can remain on the bench and plugged in at all times, increasing the room’s convenience factor.

Ordanga Construction Service

The team created a new area to house the kitchen’s ovens and coffee machine, complete with a fridge for condiments and milk. The new woodfire oven was one of the most exciting changes as it allows the family to cook everything from pizza or fish to roasted veggies over fire whenever they please. The steam oven placed nearby required some plumbing adjustments, but the team at Ordanga Construction Services leant on their experience and expertise to execute this perfectly.

The end result is an enviable culinary space that is sleek, modern and endlessly functional – ideal for the next phase of the homeowners’ lives.

An edgy yet serene seaside sanctuary by Studio McGilp.

Built on the edge of the Southern Ocean, Wave House is a beachside abode originally constructed in the 1980s. Graceful yet unconventional, the home was built on a budget using modest materials such as corrugated iron, weatherboards, timber and metal. With intersecting curvilinear rooflines, curved internal ceilings and exaggerated geometric highlight windows, Wave House had a sound structure, but a heavily outdated, chaotic interior.

The new owners enlisted Studio McGilp to complete a renovation that honoured the existing architectural forms, while transforming the interior to create a feeling of refined, understated elegance with the sense of freedom that occurs when you leave the city behind. “We wished to respect the original lines, with the curves of the roof swinging both left to right, and right to left, like the movement of the sea,” says Alisha McGilp, director and principal interior designer of Studio McGilp. “We also celebrated the quirky accents such as the small highlight windows, and retained the iron balustrade, improving its sharpness by painting it black.”

Studio McGilp

Studio McGilp entirely reimagined the floor plan, removing internal walls to re-orientate the kitchen and meals areas, as well as redesigning the layout of both bathrooms. “We drew inspiration from both the sea which is visible from the front of the home, the beautiful she-oak trees in the garden, and the Otway ranges which are seen from the back door,” Alisha shares.

The careful, honest use of materials — including pure wool carpet, stainless steel, timber and hand-formed ceramic tiles — was key to the success of this project. A restrained palette of low chroma hues is repeated throughout the home to provide a restful yet dynamic aesthetic, a strategy that allowed the elegant lines of the home to shine. “Rather than integrating strong and directional patterns, we opted for movement within materials and their applied surfaces to provide contrasts, such as reflective versus tactile values. The interplay of light enables surfaces to be illuminated when the sun reflects off them,” Alisha explains. “We considered both warm and comfortable responses and juxtaposed these with sleek and lustrous finishes.”

Studio McGilp

The muted colour palette is punctuated by strong statements of colour. Woven pure-wool loop pile carpet in a colour reminiscent of a stormy sea is relieved by the warmth of bleached timber flooring mimicking driftwood found on the beach. Textured, matt-finish wallpapers in restful colours are used in combination with lustrous ceramic tiles and colourful terrazzo flooring.

In the kitchen, a custom-designed island bench marks the heart of the home. The Studio McGilp design references the curved roof lines and creates a sense of free and easy movement around it. Constructed from environmentally conscious silica-free Corian in a deep inky blue, with inherent curvilinear forms, the island bench waterfalls at one end to meet the floor and is cantilevered on the opposing side.

Studio McGilp

The benchtop features concealed under-bench lighting for a warm, gentle illumination experience, while a bespoke, handmade Blackwood pendant adds natural warmth, juxtaposed by the ceiling-mounted lustrous Qasair rangehoods. “Re-orientating the kitchen enhanced the views, with the ability to look one way and see the forest, and in the other direction, straight to the sea,” says Alisha. “It is the best of both worlds, and the clients were delighted that we were able to create views to both landscapes that were previously obscured behind internal walls.”

Carefully weighted joinery solidifies a minimal aesthetic inside the kitchen. The living room side of the kitchen features Tasmanian oak fluted timber cladding stained in a natural finish. The opposing side offers large and functional storage space with purposely designed streamlined sharknose cabinetry.

Studio McGilp

Ceiling and wall junctions inside the home were often not an easy 90 degrees, and windows angled from top to bottom in places, so conventional installation methods of window furnishings and fixtures had to be considered carefully. The bamboo roller blind window furnishings made by Studio McGilp are one of a kind, a nod to the quintessential “beach house” vernacular. Hand-loomed Japanese reeds were custom coloured, with 100 individually woven reeds creating just one metre of fabric. These blinds provide privacy from the street below, but allow vision to the beach and sky outside. They are fully automated and integrated into the structural environment by use of custom-made painted timber pelmets which span the entire living area to conceal all mechanisms and hardware.

Behind these blinds, heavy-hitting block-out cellular blinds provide exceptional heat and noise reduction. All blinds are operated on battery motors so that they can be used when the power is out, which happens frequently in the seaside town.

Studio McGilp

Evocative of a relaxing beach stroll, the terrazzo floors found in both of the home’s bathrooms create cohesion and feature colours you would find if you scooped up a handful of sand, rock and shells from the beach. “One bathroom represents the sea, with blue hues, and the other represents the forest landscape through the use of she-oak inspired green,” Alisha notes. “The master ensuite was formed by moving existing doors and hallway to create a series of interconnecting spaces. Entering via a generous open area with a concealed cavity slider, we designed a wall-to- wall suspended Corian basin.” Downstairs, a redundant external door and mud room were removed to provide a larger footprint for the main bathroom. A frosted glass full-length window was added, enabling private and restful bathing rituals.

Studio McGilp

Studio McGilp

Wave House is a conversational home, full of surprises and delights. “It has an inherent calmness,” Alisha concludes. “We stripped back the layers of the past owners to reveal the simplicity and beauty of the original design. With views to the wild ocean and surrounding forest, the design response was to make the interior sing within these natural boundaries of beauty and serenity. The house sits comfortably in its surroundings, and the interior evokes a feeling of relaxed luxury, warmth and comfort.”

Degabriele’s kitchen project in Mosman is a stunning example of blending classic style with modern functionality. Situated in a beautiful Federation home, the kitchen exudes charm with its natural marble benchtop and splashback, hand-painted cabinetry, and proud kickboards that mirror the home’s character.

Designed for a young family which loves entertaining, the kitchen was crafted to be an inviting space for everyday use and a real “entertainer’s delight”. The addition of a built-in bar seamlessly connects the kitchen, dining and living areas, creating a harmonious flow for social gatherings.

To ensure durability and timelessness, high-quality joinery and finishes were used throughout the kitchen. The shift from a Shaker-style profile to a customised Tuscany profile with a V-groove on the exterior edges and Vivid White colour brought an open and timeless look to the space.

The redesign also involved thoughtful changes to enhance functionality. The island was updated with rounded edges and increased storage, featuring a clever lift-up pocket door for the microwave, discreetly keeping it neat and hidden when not in use.

Glass shelves were replaced with cabinets and a fully integrated fridge/freezer for a cohesive look. Not forgetting the importance of the bar area, the design incorporated marble shelving with strip lighting, creating an attractive display with a real wow factor. Integrated fridge drawers and a wine fridge ensured maximum functionality for avid entertainers.
