This year marks 70 years since Abey first opened its doors on Halsey Road, Airport West in Victoria Australia.

From a modest workshop in Airport West to a national leader in plumbing and building solutions, Abey celebrates 70 years of innovation and excellence.

Originally established as A and B Tool and Die Manufacturers Pty Ltd, the company specialized in press tools for Ford, General Motors, and the engineering industry.

1956 was a landmark year—not only did Melbourne host the Olympic Games, but our current Managing Director recalls watching the building of the original facility as a 12-year-old. The bricks used bore the Olympic symbol, commemorating the event.

By 1966, we were producing tooling for a small seatbelt manufacturer. Seatbelts became mandatory in Victoria in new cars in 1969, and in all cars Australia wide by 1972. Australia led the world in safety standards. This surge in demand prompted us to establish our own press shop, enabling expansion into plumbing and building products—a pivotal moment that marked the birth of Abey Australia.

In 1974, James Hardie ceased asbestos flue production, creating an opportunity for innovation. By 1975, we introduced Duravent Twin Wall Gas Flue, revolutionising the plumbing industry.

In the decades that followed, Abey remained at the forefront of innovation with a series of award-winning solutions manufactured here in Australia. Highlights include the launch of the Abey Interchangeable Clipping System, the development of the Flexishaft Skylight, and the introduction of corrosion-resistant masonry products in response to the Newcastle earthquake. We also expanded into premium stainless steel kitchen sinks and a full range of kitchen and bathroom tapware.

Abey Australia

Showrooms opened in all major capital cities. Developed the worlds only horizontal powder coating machine. We continue to expand our industrial clipping and masonry solutions.

As we celebrate seven decades of progress, our commitment to Australian Manufacturing and shaping the future of building and plumbing solutions remains stronger than ever.

The post Top Mount vs. Undermount vs. Flush Mount: Choosing the Best Kitchen Sink Installation Style appeared first on Completehome.

]]>
When planning a new kitchen or replacing your sink, the choice of material—such as stainless steel or granite—is only half the equation. The installation style you select—Top Mount, Undermount, or Flush Mount—is equally vital, as it determines the look, the ease of cleaning, and the overall longevity of your kitchen benchtops. This decision affects the entire workflow and final aesthetic of the room, requiring a balance of design goals, budget, and practicality.

At MyHomeware, we understand the technical and aesthetic impact of these choices. As a trusted bath supply store, we guide homeowners through a clear and practical comparison of these installation methods. Our expertise ensures you select a style that not only looks fantastic but is perfectly suited to your benchtop material, budget, and long-term kitchen performance.

Understanding the Three Core Sink Installation Methods

Each method involves a distinct way the sink interacts with the benchtop, creating unique functional and visual results.

1. Top Mount Kitchen Sinks (Drop-in)

Top Mount Kitchen Sinks (also known as ‘Drop-in’ sinks) are the most traditional and simplest installation style, popular for their ease of installation and budget-friendly nature.

Top Mount Sink, myHomeware

  • How It Works: A Top Mount kitchen sink is lowered into a cut-out in the benchtop, with a visible rim or lip resting on the surface. This rim supports the sink’s weight and seals the edge, preventing water from seeping into the cabinetry below.
  • Aesthetic and Design: This style offers a classic, practical appearance. While it doesn’t offer the seamless flow of other options, the rim can provide a contrasting accent depending on the material and finish of the sink.
  • Functional Benefits and Maintenance: Top Mount sinks are extremely practical. The installation is straightforward, often requiring less specialised labour than other types. However, crumbs and debris can sometimes collect beneath the rim where the sink meets the benchtop, making the cleanup slightly more involved than with an Undermount sink.

2. Undermount Kitchen Sinks

Undermount Kitchen Sinks are highly popular in modern Australian design for their sleek, uninterrupted look and superior cleaning ease.

Undermount Sink, myHomeware

  • How It Works: An Undermount kitchen sink is secured beneath the benchtop using heavy-duty clips and adhesives. The benchtop material extends over the sink’s edges, leaving no rim exposed on the surface. This installation is only suitable for waterproof, solid benchtop materials like granite, engineered stone, or marble.
  • Aesthetic and Design: The result is a clean, minimalist, and highly streamlined look. This flush design highlights the beauty and material of the benchtop, creating a premium feel.
  • Functional Benefits and Maintenance: Undermount sinks are championed for their hygienic cleaning ease. You can effortlessly sweep food scraps, crumbs, and liquids directly from the benchtop into the sink without catching on a rim, streamlining your kitchen workflow. The installation, however, is more complex, requiring precise cutting and professional support to ensure long-term stability and waterproofing.

3. Flush Mount Kitchen Sinks (Integrated)

Flush Mount kitchen sinks, sometimes referred to as integrated sinks, offer the most seamless and custom look, blending the sink surface completely with the benchtop.

Flush Mount Sink, myHomeware

  • How It Works: The sink is installed so its rim is perfectly level, or “flush,” with the benchtop material. This requires meticulous fitting and sealing. In some high-end installations, the sink and benchtop are made from the same material (like stainless steel or a solid-surface composite) and welded together to create a truly seamless unit.
  • Aesthetic and Design: This method provides an ultra-modern, integrated appearance, giving the illusion that the sink is a natural extension of the benchtop. It’s the ultimate choice for minimalist and high-end contemporary kitchen designs.
  • Functional Benefits and Maintenance: Like Undermount, the lack of an exposed lip means excellent cleaning ease, as no debris can catch on an edge. While the aesthetic is unmatched, the installation is the most difficult and typically the most expensive, requiring expert craftsmanship and precise measurements for a perfect seal and fit.

Practical Project Advice and Comparison Table

Choosing the right installation style must be done in conjunction with selecting your benchtop material and calculating your renovation budget.

Benchtop Compatibility and Material Constraints

The type of benchtop you have is the primary deciding factor for installation:

  • Top Mount: This style is compatible with almost all benchtop materials, including laminate, timber, and solid stone. Because the rim seals the edge of the cut-out, it protects absorbent materials like laminate or timber from water damage.
  • Undermount and Flush Mount: These styles can only be used with non-porous, waterproof, and structurally solid materials such as engineered stone (Quartz/Caesarstone), granite, marble, or concrete. They are not suitable for laminate or timber benchtops, as these materials would be exposed to water damage at the cut edge.

Long-Term Cleaning and Maintenance

Installation Style Primary Cleaning Challenge Sealing/Waterproofing Renovation Budget Impact
Top Mount Debris can collect around the outer rim/seal. Excellent, protects benchtop edges. Low (Easiest to install).
Undermount Grout/sealant line beneath the benchtop needs occasional cleaning. High, dependent on professional sealing quality. Medium (Requires professional installation).
Flush Mount Maintaining the seamless seal between the sink and benchtop. Highest, requires specialised welding or precise fitting. High (Most complex and labour-intensive).

Project-Driven Tips for Renovators

When planning your kitchen, consider these expert tips that readers can apply directly:

  • Budget vs. Aesthetic: If budget is a constraint, a Top Mount sink in a high-quality material (like 16-gauge stainless steel) offers excellent durability without the high labour cost of Undermount or Flush Mount installation.
  • Workflow: If you are an avid cook and want the absolute easiest cleanup, the Undermount style is ideal as it allows for swift wiping of crumbs directly into the bowl, improving kitchen workflow.
  • Benchtop Thickness: For Undermount sinks, consider how the sink will look against your benchtop thickness. A thinner benchtop (20mm) or a very thick one (40mm+) can dramatically change the visual impact of the installation.

The post Finding the Right Sink Style for Your Kitchen Project: Bar, Farmhouse, or Butler? appeared first on Completehome.

]]>
The sink is one of the most hardworking elements of any kitchen, and its style dictates not only how the room looks, but how it functions. When planning a new kitchen or home renovation, choosing the right sink style—whether it’s a dedicated Bar Sink, a deep Farmhouse Sink, or a classic Butler Sink—is critical to achieving an aesthetic that lasts and a workflow that serves your lifestyle.

At MyHomeware, we provide comprehensive sink solutions for every kitchen style. We guide homeowners through the differences between these distinct sink types, emphasising functionality, design versatility, and how each fits into different types of modern Australian homes. Our product expertise supports homeowners throughout their renovation journey, helping them make confident choices from initial research to final product selection. The insights we offer reflect our deep understanding of Australian renovation needs and connect the design tips to real product features we offer across materials, finishes, and configurations.

Understanding the Three Main Sink Styles

Each sink style offers unique advantages in terms of size, capacity, and aesthetic integration. Understanding these differences is the first step in simplifying the decision-making process for homeowners and renovators.

1. Bar Sinks: Compact Versatility and Secondary Function

Bar Sinks, also known as prep sinks or entertainment sinks, are defined by their compact size and versatile placement. They are the ultimate solution for adding utility without taking up the valuable bench space required by a full-sized main sink.

MyHomeware

  • Functional Advantages: Their primary role is to serve as a secondary workstation. This separation is invaluable for tasks that don’t require the main kitchen sink, such as washing produce, mixing drinks, or disposing of liquids. Their smaller size makes them ideal for compact versatility and prevents cross-contamination between food prep and dirty dishes.
  • Optimal Placement: They are most suitable for installation in butler’s pantries, dedicated wet bars, or on large kitchen islands, providing a convenient, secondary rinse zone away from the main clean-up area. They are also a growing trend in outdoor entertaining areas or on specific zones within the kitchen, such as a coffee station or baking bench.
  • Installation Flexibility: Bar sinks are lighter and simpler to install than the larger apron-front styles. They come in both top-mount (where the rim rests on the benchtop) and under-mount (installed below the benchtop for a seamless look) configurations, offering greater flexibility depending on the benchtop material and installation budget.
  • Design Integration: Available in a range of durable materials, including stainless steel and granite, they can be seamlessly integrated into modern minimalist designs or used as a discreet, functional addition in an entertainment area.

2. Farmhouse Sinks: Deep Basin and Exposed Apron

This style is instantly recognisable by its deep basin and large, exposed front apron. Farmhouse Sinks have seen a significant resurgence in Australian homes, moving beyond the traditional cottage to feature in contemporary coastal and classic designs.

MyHomeware

  • Functional Advantages: The deep basin is the unique functional benefit, making the Farmhouse Sink perfect for washing large pots, baking trays, and bulky items with minimal splashing. The exceptional depth means you can easily conceal dishes awaiting cleaning and is ideal for heavy-duty cleanup. The exposed apron allows users to stand closer to the basin, reducing strain on the back and making kitchen tasks more comfortable.
  • Aesthetic Impact: They are typically installed as the main kitchen sink, often as a single-bowl feature, acting as a striking focal point. They are particularly well-suited for larger kitchens or on a statement island.
  • Design Integration: They complement a wide range of interior aesthetics. While traditionally associated with white fireclay, Farmhouse Sinks are now widely available in modern finishes like matte black granite or polished stainless steel, allowing them to integrate into contemporary, industrial, and country-style kitchens.

3. Butler Sinks: The Classic Fireclay Statement

While often used interchangeably with the Farmhouse Sink, this style is traditionally defined by its material and slightly different profile. Historically, butler sinks were used in butler’s pantries for washing fine china and linens.

MyHomeware

  • Key Material Distinction: Butler Sinks are predominantly made from fireclay, a specialised ceramic material coated with a thick layer of enamel glaze and fired at extremely high temperatures. This process creates a robust, glossy, and highly durable surface that is resistant to staining and scratching, and is considered the core characteristic of the Butler style.
  • Functional Advantages: Like the Farmhouse style, Butler Sinks feature deep, capacious bowls, often available in a popular double-bowl configuration, which is essential for multi-tasking and rinsing. The material’s resistance to acid and heat ensures longevity and easy cleaning.
  • Placement Suitability: They are a natural fit for classic, provincial, or Hamptons-style kitchens and are frequently used in the primary cleanup area or in a full-sized butler’s pantry.
  • Design Integration: The strong, typically square edges and characteristic white, glazed finish make a bold, traditional statement. They lend a sense of timeless elegance and classic charm, contrasting beautifully with darker benchtops.

Matching Sink Style to Your Kitchen Project

Choosing the right kitchen sink involves more than just selecting a look; it requires aligning the sink’s functional design with your kitchen’s layout, usage needs, and overall aesthetic.

Scenario-Based Suitability Advice

Project Scenario Recommended Sink Style Justification and Practical Advice
New Wet Bar or Coffee Station Bar Sink Offers a dedicated, compact water source that saves space and improves workflow in a secondary zone.

Choose an under-mount stainless steel option for a clean, commercial look.

Busy Family Kitchen (Heavy Use) Farmhouse Sink The deep basin is invaluable for soaking large pots, handling high-volume cleanup, and easily accommodating large items. Select a durable material like granite composite or fireclay to handle constant wear and tear.
Classic Home Renovation (Hamptons/Provincial) Butler Sink Provides the authentic, traditional look and material (fireclay) that is central to these styles. Ensure custom cabinetry is factored into the budget to support the sink’s substantial weight and apron.

Project-Driven Advice for Renovators

Homeowners and renovators should take specific steps when incorporating these feature sinks into their plans:

  • Custom Cabinetry is Crucial: Farmhouse and Butler sinks, due to their weight and exposed front, require custom cabinetry and careful planning. The cabinet base must be reinforced to handle the sink’s substantial weight (especially when filled with water) and precisely cut to accommodate the apron.
  • Consider Tapware Pairing: These large-format sinks benefit from high-arch or gooseneck tapware to ensure the spout clears the basin rim and offers ample working room. For Farmhouse and Butler styles, a pull-out spray tap is highly recommended for effectively rinsing the large bowl area.
  • Layout Flow: For all sink types, ensure the placement does not interfere with the dishwasher or other adjacent drawers. For Bar Sinks, position them directly in the work zone they are intended to serve (e.g., near the fridge or oven).
