Light and Bright

The warmth of the woodgrain finishes partners perfectly with the cool demeanour of the pristine white surfaces in this reimagined kitchen, designed by Rebecca Wallis of Kitchens U Build Geelong.

The original dark-brick house was cramped, gloomy and dated. The owners built an extension and embarked on a major renovation, turning it into the light and bright property you see today. This involved some significant changes, from the inclusion of a downstairs unit to the creation of a modern kitchen that is a world away from its previous incarnation, which was drab and impractical.

What the owners craved was an uplifting open-plan kitchen of contemporary coastal design. The space needed to have a clean look, feel inviting and “bring the outside in” with the use of natural timber finishes.

Enhancing the brightness and sense of openness, the white walls and ceiling are complemented by overhead cabinets in a two-pack Dulux Natural White satin finish. These work in harmony with the 20mm-thick polished Zenith Surfaces’ Pearl White benchtops from Stone Ambassador. This smooth-to-the-touch material also ows down the waterfall sides of the island bench and forms the splashback.

The wood-look finish of the cabinetry featuring Polytec’s Woodmatt in Nordic Oak has a grounding effect. Characterised by pale timber tones with mid-grey highlights and subtle yet tactile woodgrain embossing, this finish warms the space.

Matching Nordic Oak bulkheads flow from the kitchen into the lounge area, creating continuity and giving the impression of increased ceiling height. Of streamlined design, the kitchen prioritises functionality and the smart use of space.

This can be seen in the use of bevelled finger-pull cabinetry and the fully integrated dishwasher, as well as the symmetrically placed built-in coffee machine and microwave that book-end the kitchen. And in an inspired, space-maximising move, the walk-in pantry, which features matching finishes, includes a concealed laundry. What more could you ask for?
