Michael Christopher Design | Bowen Hills Kitchen Revived for Cooking & Entertaining

In Bowen Hills, a compact apartment kitchen has been revived by Michael Christopher Design into a striking space designed for both professional-level cooking and effortless entertaining.

The original kitchen, cramped with poor storage and inefficiently positioned appliances, left little room for preparation or gatherings. With a clear vision from the client, a former chef, Michael has delivered a design that blends performance, sophistication and warmth within the apartment’s existing footprint.

Storage was a central focus, with cabinetry solutions more than doubling the previous capacity. Tall overhead units with WingLine doors, a pantry with six inner drawers and generous deep drawers for cookware now ensure every item has its place. Integrated refrigeration and a streamlined dishwasher reduce visual bulk while maximising efficiency.

The layout was entirely reconsidered to enhance flow and usability. A large 90-centimetre cooktop was relocated to the extended peninsula, which now offers generous seating for up to five adults on two sides. This not only creates a hub for interaction, but also provides abundant space for preparation and serving. Above the cooktop, a ceiling cassette rangehood has been cleverly built into a suspended shelf, paired with a statement pendant that balances functionality with sculptural presence.

One of the most notable features is the dedicated bar area. By redesigning the laundry, Michael introduced a second sink, an additional dishwasher, and ample storage for wine and spirits. A wine fridge, hidden liquor cabinet and illuminated glassware display bring a sense of theatre to the space, making it as suited to entertaining as it is to day-to-day living.

The aesthetic direction embraces masculine elegance. Matt black anti-fingerprint cabinetry in Milano Nero is paired with the warmth of Halifax oak accents, while stone-look benchtops and splashbacks deliver a cohesive and luxurious finish. Concealed LED strip lighting enhances both ambience and practicality, while glass-fronted display cabinets with internal lighting add refinement.

Through careful planning and bold design choices, Michael has transformed a constrained apartment kitchen into a contemporary entertainer’s haven. The result is a space that reflects the client’s culinary passion, seamlessly integrating professional function with refined style.
