For a family of four in Chapel Hill, the kitchen was always destined to be more than just a place to cook.
Their 1990s home, with its open-plan design and strong connection to outdoor living, offered generous space, but the central kitchen struggled with limited natural light and a dated footprint. Michael Christopher Design was engaged to reimagine the space, transforming it into a hub that balances family life, entertaining and eco-conscious design.
Retaining the original tiled floors meant the new kitchen needed to work seamlessly within the existing footprint. Michael achieved this by creating an open and efficient layout that prioritises storage and flow. A large pantry with five inner drawers, deep drawer banks for cookware and spacious benchtops now provide the family with a kitchen that is as practical as it is beautiful. The addition of a central island not only introduces extra workspace, but also offers a welcoming spot for casual meals and conversation.
Given the home’s lush surroundings, natural light was always going to be a challenge. To counter this, layered lighting solutions were introduced. Task, ambient and accent lighting work together to create warmth and brightness, while LED strips beneath the island and within cabinetry bring a subtle glow that enhances the overall sense of sophistication. Pendant lights suspended above the island add a touch of elegance, anchoring the design visually.
Sustainability was a cornerstone of the brief. Michael’s selection of eco-friendly European FSC® board and laminate benchtops, alongside A+ energy-rated ovens and efficient LED lighting, ensures the space is as responsible as it is refined. Thoughtful details, such as 29-litre pull-out bins with separate compartments for recycling and composting, further reinforce the family’s commitment to an environmentally conscious lifestyle.
The palette is deliberately timeless, blending neutral tones with textured finishes that echo the existing decor while lending the kitchen its own character. Integrated appliances allow for a seamless aesthetic, keeping lines clean and uncluttered. The end result is a kitchen that feels warm and inviting, yet sophisticated enough to host guests with ease.
Michael Christopher Design has delivered a space that not only resolves the challenges of the site, but elevates the everyday routines of family life, creating a true heart of the home.
