In the heart of any home lies its kitchen, yet for Libby and her family, this vital space was far from accommodating.
The transformation of a family kitchen, before the renovations began, their kitchen lacked the essentials for functionality, let alone accessibility. With a dream to provide their daughter Isabella, who relies on a wheelchair, with a space where she could explore her culinary passions independently, the family sought the expertise of Kenwood Kitchens.
Previous Kitchen Setup: Libby and her family initially grappled with a kitchen space devoid of cabinetry and proper amenities. Their makeshift setup relied on the boxes of their appliances and a camp table for meal preparations.
Owner’s Brief: Amidst the construction of their dream home, the family envisioned a kitchen that transcended the ordinary – one that embraced Isabella’s needs for wheelchair accessibility while fostering her independence. Kenwood Kitchens, in a collaborative effort, orchestrated a comprehensive solution:
- Design: Vince McGroarty contributed a bespoke kitchen design.
- Project Management: Sam Filardi oversaw project management.
- Donations: Various suppliers generously donated materials and services, including OMEGA Appliances, YDL Stone, Polytec, Artline Kitchens, Blum, and P & J Installations.
The plumbing and electrical aspects were sourced independently by the client.
Special Design Features: The kitchen’s design centered on accessibility and functionality, incorporating elements such as:
- Stone benchtops and splashbacks donated by YDL Stone and Arciuli.
- Cabinetry by Polytec, featuring soft-close drawers and doors.
- Innovative storage solutions like pull-out racks and Le Mons corner cabinetry.
- All-black OMEGA Appliances for a sleek aesthetic.
Design Considerations and Challenges: The project navigated challenges such as ensuring wheelchair access around the island, appropriate bench heights, and the absence of handles on doors and drawers. The meticulous planning and execution were overseen by Kenwood Kitchens’ general manager in collaboration with key suppliers.
Main Design Objective: Vince McGroarty and Sam Filardi spearheaded the project, ensuring that the kitchen not only met but exceeded the family’s expectations. By prioritising accessibility and functionality, the team crafted a space that empowered Isabella to pursue her culinary endeavors with newfound independence.
