A collaborative masterpiece with sweeping views

Located in picturesque Murrindindi, two hours north-east of Melbourne, Victoria, this showpiece home is positioned within a scenic valley and sits subtly upon the ridgeline, optimising views of the tranquil landscape.

With a desire to create both a rural sanctuary and a space to share with friends and family, the clients engaged Hedger Constructions and bespoke interior designer Studio McGilp to bring their vision to life. The home has a unique spatial organisation, with two wings for guest and owner retreats, connected via expansive, light-filled shared central spaces.

Hedger Constructions + Studio McGilp

Unobtrusive to the skyline with the 12-degree roof pitch and a cohesive colour palette inspired by the gentle hues of the landscape, the home demonstrates a contemporary rural residence in complete harmony with its natural surroundings.

Externally, the use of natural materials in contrasting tones and textures was given careful consideration. The generously proportioned front entry door has been custom designed and built from Tasmanian oak, with weighted sections of solid copper inlay and a custom handmade hammered bronze handle.

Hedger Constructions + Studio McGilp

Fine Adze Granite provides elegant simplicity and is complemented by handmade charcoal-coloured Flensborg brickwork imported from Denmark. The use of yellow stringybark feature cladding to key areas provides a contrasting change to the tones.

Timber blades on the guest wing not only complement the style, but also have the functional aspects of privacy and allowing services such as downpipes to be concealed, giving clean lines to the build. An Alucabond fascia runs around the roofline, linking with the express-jointed panel eave lining for a cohesive external finish.

Internally, the artisan craftsmanship of Hedger Constructions is on full display. The central zone of the home features a raked ceiling of Tasmanian oak, providing natural strength, which is counterbalanced by light-honed Italian natural stone flooring. When the north sun illuminates the living room floor, the gentle, translucent veins reflect movement and provide ethereal serenity.

Hedger Constructions + Studio McGilp

The focus of the space is the centrally placed triple-sided wood fire, custom designed and detailed using individually shaped New Pearl limestone pieces. It is anchored by an extended hearth of large-format sintered stone in rich bronze to convey a solid, grounded ethic marking the “heart” of the home. On the hearth, a generous seat cushion in a limited-release jewel-tone cut moquette velvet encourages fireside seating.

The stunning feature chimney emphasises the high timber ceiling and openness of this area. Contemporary American accent lighting is used throughout and was customised by the interior and build teams to suit suspension from the raked ceilings.

With a 73-year history in high-end, custom residential interior design and decoration, Studio McGilp approached the interiors throughout this showpiece home with respect to the contemporary, linear nature of the architecture, while providing contrast through the introduction of gentle, organic forms. Softening of the built environment was achieved through the integration of a cohesive colour palette, evoking relaxed luxury, serenity and comfort.

A carefully curated selection of paintings, sculptures and objet d’art includes locally made hand-blown glass sculptural forms, a commissioned suspended wire sculpture, and an extensive selection of individually commissioned artworks. The furnishing response incorporates unique, limited-release European fabrics and custom woven textiles to enhance the interior via the use of contemporary patterns and modern, botanical forms.

A bespoke kitchen is flooded with natural light via an impressive glazing package including electric-opening clerestory windows for natural cross ventilation. The cabinetry package utilises low chroma colours to create a serene, comfortable space for cooking and entertaining. Hand-formed light-reflective tiles create an elegant splashback. The environmentally conscious silica-free Corian benchtop features a waterfall edge on one side and is balanced by a cantilevered plane on the opposing side, while the butler’s pantry is discreetly positioned to allow the working elements of the kitchen to be concealed.

At either end of the open-plan central zone there are guest and private wings. Here, the high ceilings and expansive shared spaces are juxtaposed with an intimate approach using tactile finishes and materials. The bedrooms are inviting, restful sanctuaries and include bespoke upholstered bedheads and soft lighting, the beds finished with fine textiles of pure cashmere, cut velvet, wool and linen.

In the master bathroom, the free-standing bath is positioned to optimise valley views, with hand-woven artisanal Japanese automated blinds providing privacy. A large walk-in shower and an expansive dressing room complete the retreat-like feel.

Hedger Constructions + Studio McGilp

The north-facing aspect of the living and master bedroom zones allows for panoramic views as well as providing important thermal qualities to the home. The in-floor hydronic heating is rarely used as the eave lines and glazing package allow for the tiled floor to act as a heat bank in winter, and they provide appropriate shading in summer.

The main guest bedroom includes a private ensuite with floor-to-ceiling tiling and walk-in robe area. Additional bedrooms are serviced by a family bathroom and powder room in which custom-made light fittings of locally hand-blown glass and solid brass create a gentle atmosphere.

Bespoke in all aspects, this home required a collaborative approach for which Hedger Constructions is renowned. Working hand-in-hand with Studio McGilp, all parties contributed their expertise to provide comprehensive, individually tailored services from concept to completion.

With projects Australia-wide, Studio McGilp brought an informed understanding of interior architecture, interior detailing and building methods to achieve this special and timeless interior.

A reputation underpinned by more than 30 Master Builders Association Awards, including multiple Regional Builder of the Year wins, makes Hedger Constructions the trusted name to deliver custom homes of this size and calibre. Every Hedger Constructions dwelling is masterfully crafted with a considered, innovative approach, and this new Murrindindi residence is no exception.

Old-world charm meets modern grandeur

Positioned in a charming streetscape, in the leafy suburb of Hawthorn, Victoria, this heritage home has been lovingly restored and thoughtfully extended to merge old-world charm with contemporary finesse. The soft grey façade, complemented by crisp white trim, embodies timeless elegance, while the English-tiled verandah and bluestone pathway welcome guests to a striking leadlight entry door—a testament to the home’s rich past.

Hedger Constructions

Stepping inside, the journey through history begins with meticulously retained skirting and architraves that pay homage to the home’s architectural roots. Wide American oak floorboards guide you down the hallway, where period charm seamlessly transitions into modern grandeur.

In this considered renovation, the home embraces modern living with a reimagined open plan kitchen, dining and lounge area bathed in natural light. Offering a perfect balance of warmth and sophistication, feature stone benchtops grace the expansive kitchen island, extending their refined aesthetic into the adjoining laundry and pantry. Sleek cabinetry, state-of-the-art appliances, and carefully curated feature lighting ensure this space is as functional as it is beautiful.

Designed for effortless entertaining, the open plan space extends to a covered outdoor area, perfect for gatherings with family and friends. Integrated air conditioning, with discreet linear slot venting, ensures year-round comfort without compromising aesthetics.

The ground floor master suite is a true retreat, where the existing fireplace has been transformed with a stunning stone surround and restored black timber mantle. A walk-in robe and elegant ensuite complete this haven of comfort and style. A private parents’ lounge provides an additional escape, boasting a refurbished original timber fireplace adorned with striking black marble corbels and a black feature-tiled hearth—an exquisite nod to the home’s heritage.

The second bathroom on the ground floor continues the theme of understated luxury, with neutral grey floor-to-ceiling tiles, a full decadent bath, and a warm timber vanity topped with pristine white stone. Every detail has been considered to create an inviting and tranquil space.

Ascending the American oak staircase, the upper level unfolds into a spacious entertainment and study zone—a warm and welcoming enclave ideal for relaxation. Two generously sized bedrooms, adorned with plush carpeting and floor-to-ceiling wardrobes, offer sanctuary, while expansive picture and highlight windows flood the space with natural light.

Externally, the modern rear extension, a striking contrast to the classic front façade, stands on a render-brick base, crowned with sleek black charred timber cladding. This harmonious blend of old and new embodies the essence of contemporary heritage renovation – where history is honoured and modernity embraced, creating a home that is both timeless and forward-thinking.

This remarkable residence is more than just a renovation – it’s a transformation that celebrates craftsmanship, character, and contemporary luxury in equal measure. A true masterpiece of heritage reimagined, where classic elegance meets modern sophistication.

In a location of proud heritage, this sustainable home is a winner

Sitting on the cosy deck of this eco-friendly home, there is hardly a breath of wind. It’s quiet and calm. There are views to the national park beyond and agricultural buildings in the distance. Looking out at the leafy landscape, you can almost imagine the heady excitement of those seeking their fortune in the 1850s. The town of Chewton was one of the earliest towns established during the Gold Rush era. Some buildings in the district still remain from the Gold Rush heyday and there are also deep indigenous roots in the region.

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom dwelling is home to young professionals James and Zara
and their greyhound Nel. “It was inspired by the local vernacular architecture, particularly the humble agricultural buildings that define the central Victorian landscape,” says designer David Noordhoff.

Pyrenees, Vic

The couple relocated from suburban Melbourne. “They sought a place to lay down roots and establish themselves in a more tranquil environment,” shares David. The home has open-plan living and a dedicated workspace for James. The design and layout connect living spaces to the leafy natural landscape.

During planning and design, David says there was one main objective: “Ultimately, the goal was to establish a welcoming environment that encourages relaxation and fosters connections with both nature and family life.” According to David, it was also important to the homeowners that their house integrate harmoniously with its surrounding narrative. “They favoured local materials and architectural styles that honoured the area’s agricultural heritage,” he explains.

Pyrenees, Vic

Materials such as spotted gum cladding and Colorbond steel in Woodland Grey were used to integrate the home into its local environment, as well as complying with the bushfire attack level rating (BAL 29).

The project did come with its share of challenges, including historical protection regulations that weighed in on the design process, and with COVID-19, there were also material shortages
during construction.

David notes the couple also sought a design that would provide comfortable living conditions year-round, minimising energy costs. “Additionally, addressing noise from the road adjacent to the property was crucial to creating a tranquil living environment,” he adds.

By today’s standards, this house was constructed with a modest budget. Thanks to thoughtful measured design as well as materiality, it delivers on functionality, form and aesthetics. Inspired by nature’s palette of warm earthy tones, it’s understated with a subtle charm. This is a family dwelling with design flexibility to allow it to evolve over time, as needs change.

Pyrenees, Vic

David’s favourite part of the space is the window seat next to the fireplace, a cosy nook that invites you to curl up on a chilly winter day with a coffee. The expansive windows connect you to the exterior landscape. “This intimate corner embodies the spirit of the home, offering a warm and inviting retreat where you can relax and appreciate nature throughout the seasons,” he says.

As the long hot days of summer flow into the cooler autumn and winter months, temperatures begin to fall, sometimes dramatically. It is an area of temperature extremes, with chilly winters and scorching summers. The home is responsive to its environment. The pitched roof lines capture the warming winter sun’s rays and offer cool respite from the hot summer sun.

Pyrenees, Vic

David explains these construction techniques enhance insulation, reducing the need for artificial heating and cooling. “This approach not only improves energy efficiency, but also ensures a comfortable living environment despite the extreme climate,” he notes.

The project was a meeting of minds between homeowners, builder and architect. “I collaborated extensively with James and Zara to ensure their vision and needs remained at the forefront of the design,” says David. “VR Builders provided valuable advice and guidance, helping to keep the project on budget while ensuring it was practical and straightforward to construct.”

Pyrenees, Vic

Unlike most projects, the architect actually had an opportunity to test drive the house. His family lived in the completed home for three months, housesitting for the owners while they went overseas. “Living in the space allowed me to ‘road test’ the design in real life, providing valuable insights and enjoyable experiences,” David says. “This experience not only deepened my connection to the project, but also created lasting memories for my family as we cherished our time in this special place.”

A rural home that feels wholly contemporary, deeply personal, and delightfully unexpected

Perched above the pastoral beauty of Victoria’s Yarra Valley, The Peach House is an immersive study in how construction detail and architectural storytelling can come together to create a home that is both poetic and practical. Drawing from the clients’ heritage in brass and copper craftsmanship, and their sharp eye for design, the residence becomes a physical extension of legacy, artistry and lived experience.

At a glance, The Peach House pays homage to the traditional barn house vernacular, with its bold triple-gabled roofline and rural silhouette. But step closer and it quickly becomes evident that this is no conventional farmhouse. The exterior is a tactile composition of folded copper panels and charred Shou Sugi Ban timber cladding, with matt black steel and aluminium detailing.

The Peach House, Hedger Constructions

The Peach House, Hedger Constructions

The facade not only honours the clients’ sixth-generational legacy in brass and copper, but respects the region’s rich volcanic soils and landscape, visually grounding the home in its natural surroundings. Custom brass pivot doors at both the front and rear create a sense of arrival and continuation, portals that speak to the home’s openness and carefully choreographed spatial journey.

A lofty open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, the heart of the home, is anchored by a palette of natural and refined materials. Honed Artedomus Tiberio natural stone benchtops elevate the kitchen, where brass detailing and light-timber cabinetry with mesh inlays offer a rich tactile experience.

A feature steel-framed arch window, more than 5m in height, becomes the room’s crown jewel, drawing the eye outward to views of Mount Dandenong.

Utilising architectural geometries, the open-plan areas create comfortable breakout spaces, expansive sightlines and intimate moments. The dining area features a cantilevered banquette seat wrapped in jade mosaic fabric, framed by the large arch window which captures views of the family farm and draws in natural light to extend the sense of openness and connection to the outdoors.

The Peach House, Hedger Constructions

Underfoot, a striking Beach House European Oak chevron floor is used throughout key living areas, its lighter tone purposefully selected to contrast against the dark, ink-hued kitchen cabinetry. This interplay between light and dark, soft and sculptural, continues across the home in the form of exposed beams, arched features and curved joinery, creating a deliberate softness to balance the bold architectural geometry.

Construction detailing is thoughtful and immersive. Brushed-brass elements such as door handles, shower screen hinges and mesh cabinetry inlays turn everyday details into moments of design expression.

The Peach House, Hedger Constructions

In the living area, architectural elements are transformed into sculptural forms, with a central brick fireplace and a brass-clad, scalloped floating staircase providing access to the mezzanine. Positioned against a wall of glazing, the bespoke staircase transforms function into sculpture.

Terrazzo, in its many iterations, plays a starring role throughout the home. From Fibonacci terrazzo used in the fireplace and walk-in robe island, to colourful Polarity terrazzo in the master ensuite, and warm Ghosted Hone tones in secondary bathrooms, the material becomes a unifying yet expressive element, celebrating texture, colour and pattern with bold confidence. In the bathrooms, these finishes are paired with soft peach grout, geometric feature walls, and peach-toned floors to create moments that feel equal parts spa and art installation.

The Peach House, Hedger Constructions

The Peach House, Hedger Constructions

The spine of the home, an expansive hallway paved with cobblestones, connects the central atrium to the bedroom pavilion, rumpus and alfresco. Vertical timber beams flank the space, creating a striking visual rhythm while tying interior finishes to the external environment. Expansive glazing adds depth and light, transforming the corridor into a generous, sunlit walkway. The dramatic pivot brass feature doors at either end offer a sculptural moment that links the organic methodology of building to embrace material richness and functional elegance.

This approach to integrating design and utility is echoed in every corner of the home. The alfresco area continues this dialogue, with the main roofline extending overhead to form a sculptural cover that provides shelter without compromising sunlight, thanks to a glazed gable end that welcomes light deep into the home.

In the bedrooms and upstairs sitting rooms, materials shift toward a quieter luxury. A 1970s-inspired palette of mustard floors, white walls and timber-lined ceilings lend a calm, retro warmth, while arched transitions and textured cabinetry preserve the home’s sculptural DNA. The master suite is a sanctuary of golden light, clad in patterned wallpaper and softened by warm-toned terrazzo and brass grilles that frame and elevate the space.

In the rumpus room, timber-lined ceilings and a custom linear slot vent crafted from matching timber offer both seamless airflow and a consistent material language. Ventilation throughout the home is both concealed and refined, maintaining aesthetics while enhancing comfort.

Even the laundry becomes a celebration of colour and detail. A red travertine-tiled splashback and orange-toned cabinetry provide a theatrical contrast to the Fibonacci terrazzo benchtops, echoing the vibrant, expressive thread that runs through every space in the house.

What ties it all together is the consistency of craftsmanship and the clarity of vision. Every construction decision, from the structural forms to the tiniest joinery detail, is intentional. Every curve, texture and material combination speaks to a larger narrative: one of home, heritage and playfulness. Spatial planning is equally considered, using volume and form to create generous yet cosy environments, never letting the scale overpower the intimacy.

This beautifully articulated design, brought to life by Hedger Constructions, is a residence where craftsmanship, artistry and architecture are one. The Peach House isn’t just a home, it’s a sculptural statement grounded in functionality, family and fun. It redefines what it means to build with memory and materiality at the forefront.

Blending luxury, sustainability and practicality — and delivered with exceptional craftsmanship courtesy of Hedger Constructions — this iconic home redefines modern family living on Victoria’s picturesque coast.

Idyllically located on Victoria’s Surf Coast, this impressive new family home and office marries contemporary design with environmental sustainability, creating a harmonious and stylish retreat for work, play, and family life. The original 3-acre block featured a perimeter of established trees but was otherwise a blank canvas. Auhaus Architecture worked with the clients to develop a sculptural home design with sweeping curves, impressive scale and a palette of natural materials to create a statement home with a uniquely Australian aesthetic.

Hedger Constructions

Renowned for delivering custom homes of this size and calibre, Hedger Constructions were engaged in the design and development phase and worked collaboratively with the architects and clients to bring the ambitious home vision to life.

The property has a truly unique design and spatial organisation, with no formal front or back. From every side of the home a different aspect of the property can be experienced, with multiple entry and exit points encouraging access to private or shared spaces, whilst immersing occupants in outdoor entertaining and the lush landscaping surrounding the build. Created as two distinct pavilions connected via a glass walkway, the main wing houses the central living, kitchen, dining areas, home office, cinema complex and master suite, while the other is dedicated to the children’s and guest quarters, complete with separate entertaining areas, garage and laundry.

Hedger Constructions

Externally and internally, artisan Elephant Bricks contribute mid-century style and strength, and have been expertly laid to incorporate incredible wall curves, rising to the steeply pitched skillion roof. High ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows curve elegantly around the building’s exterior, mirroring its architectural contours and inviting an abundance of natural light. External eaves are meticulously lined in natural timber to complement the decking and emphasise the sculptural curves of the main wing.

Hedger Constructions

Within the main pavilion, raked ceilings accentuate height and are finished with floating plaster and concealed lighting on all sides, creating a soft and relaxing ambience, whilst subtly highlighting the texture and earthy tones of the brickwork.

The home’s double brick walls provide not only a stunning visual element, but also serve as a thermal mass, retaining heat during winter. Polished concrete floors with a salt-and-pepper finish flow throughout the open plan area, providing additional thermal mass by capturing the sun’s warmth in the day and slowly releasing it in the evenings to naturally warm this cool climate home. Hydronic heating, air conditioning, and a solar-battery hybrid system provide energy-efficiency, while heat pumps, water tanks and a greywater treatment system ensure sustainability.

Hedger Constructions

At the heart of the home, the kitchen, dining, and lounge area impress with their open-plan design. A cleverly concealed scullery backing onto the main kitchen ensures the area remains clutter-free, while the thick natural stone topped island bench doubles as a breakfast bar. High-end appliances, including a custom-built range hood and induction cooktop, blend seamlessly
into the space, maintaining a streamlined aesthetic. Custom timber veneer cabinetry features throughout the kitchen and lounge areas creating a balanced, integrated and functional design. Within the lounge a triple-sided Cheminees Philippe wood heater with feature flue sits upon on a custom concrete hearth, gently warming the home.

Hedger Constructions

Hedger Constructions

The central area opens onto an outdoor entertaining space, where a custom-built pizza oven and BBQ are nestled within concrete benchtops. Timber decking and ceilings along with a wood heater and fans enhance the alfresco zone, creating a private and weather-protected retreat for relaxation and dining.

Hedger Constructions

The adjacent entertainment room is a cinema lover’s dream, featuring state-of-the-art acoustic insulation and audiovisual equipment for an immersive experience. A billiards table and extensive bar, complete with stone splashbacks and subway tile bases, elevate this space into an entertainer’s paradise.

Hedger Constructions

The master suite offers a serene escape, with walk-in robes, expansive garden views and direct access to a private courtyard. The spacious ensuite features double stone topped vanities, brass tapware, and subway tile accents. A free-standing bath, positioned against floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the private courtyard, is both luxurious and discreet.

All bathrooms throughout the home exude elegance, with floor-to-ceiling tiles extending into skylight cavities for a sense of light and luxury. Recessed downlights and feature lighting deliver understated style to every corner.

Hedger Constructions

The home office, perched on the second story, offers a commanding view of the expansive grounds and includes a private balcony. Designed for productivity and inspiration, this space embodies the perfect balance of work and leisure.

In the second wing, each child’s bedroom is a personalised haven, decorated with their own chosen artworks adorning walls and ceilings. Custom-built robes and desks provide practical yet stylish individual spaces, while their shared entertainment room is the ultimate hub for games, music, and movies. Guest quarters are also included within this wing, accompanied by private ensuites to ensure tranquil retreats.

The home’s luxury automation system connects lighting, audio, and communication to centralised digital management, offering seamless control at the touch of a button. A dedicated server room ensures smooth operation, bringing modern convenience to every aspect of daily life.

Thoughtfully crafted to accommodate the diverse needs of its residents, this sculptural winged residence is an architectural triumph, offering a balance of privacy, connectivity, and functionality. Blending luxury, sustainability, and practicality, and delivered with exceptional craftsmanship, this iconic home redefines modern family living on Victoria’s picturesque coast.

A vibrant transformation blends green accents and modern flair, creating a sanctuary that balances sophistication with family warmth

Verde Residence brings a breath of fresh air to South Melbourne’s historic Pickles Street, reviving a 1970s brick house with innovative design and a touch of green. Guided by Monique Vuk of One Wolf Design, this modernised family home now boasts an open layout, natural light, and vibrant green elements that link the indoors to an elegant vine-covered wall outside.

Homeowners Rohan and Srna Matthews, along with their two children and two large dogs, sought a home that would feel open and stylish yet offer a sense of sanctuary — a place designed for connection and effortless entertaining.

Verde residence

The transformation of Verde Residence started with a vision to improve natural light and flow. Originally a dark, compartmentalised space with minimal windows, the house was reimagined with bold features such as underfloor heating, natural stone, and mood lighting that infuses each room with warmth and style. “The idea was to create an environment that embraces a modern lifestyle while remaining connected to nature,” says Monique. Now, Verde Residence is a cohesive family retreat where each room opens naturally to the next, with design elements inspired by the nearby green wall filtering throughout the home.

In the main living area, a harmonious blend of modern finishes and organic textures greets guests with a welcoming yet elegant atmosphere. Green marble surfaces in the kitchen and rich chocolate-toned timber anchor the open-plan space, while floor-to-ceiling windows blur the boundary between indoor and outdoor areas. This careful balance of materials and light was achieved through the integration of expansive sliding doors and bifolding windows, creating a flow that connects the home to the lush backyard. A large island bench serves as both a practical workspace and a social hub, ideal for hosting gatherings or enjoying family meals together.

Verde residence

In the bathrooms, earthy textures and natural materials elevate everyday routines into moments of luxury. A handmade Moroccan rain showerhead, micro-mosaic tiles, and sculptural concrete basins transform the main bathroom into a spa-like retreat. The use of microcement on walls and floors provides a clean, modern aesthetic, while terrazzo and vein-cut travertine add richness and depth. “Our goal was to balance practicality with moments of indulgence,” explains Monique, describing the seamless integration of form and function that defines each wet area. The soft lighting and earth-toned palette enhance the calming atmosphere, making these private spaces feel both grounded and refined.

Verde residence

Verde residence

Throughout Verde Residence, a subtle, moody palette brings an intimate feel that complements its open layout. Monochromatic and green accents continue from the kitchen into the living and dining areas, creating a sense of continuity and harmony. The hallway, lined with bespoke artwork and feature lighting, gives the space a gallery-like quality while providing a thoughtful transition between spaces. The hidden bar, tucked just off the main living area, adds a touch of sophistication, enhancing the home’s appeal as an entertainer’s paradise.

Verde residence

Energy efficiency was a core consideration, with double-glazed windows and recycled hardwood used throughout. These sustainable choices not only enhance comfort and reduce environmental impact, but also align with the family’s commitment to thoughtful design. The innovative use of greenery throughout the residence, along with environmentally friendly features, reflects the homeowners’ respect for nature, while custom touches such as a large pivot door and integrated shelving further personalise the space. The result is a home that marries thoughtful design with natural beauty, creating a vibrant sanctuary where sustainability and style live in perfect harmony.

Located in the heart of Melbourne’s inner eastern suburbs, this extensive renovation seamlessly blends the old with the new. Retaining the character of a traditional Californian Bungalow, the redesign introduces a modern extension designed to maximise natural light, ventilation, and indoor-outdoor flow. Featuring Rylock’s custom windows and doors, the design elevates both functionality and aesthetics, creating a bright and inviting living space.

The updated wing is accessed via the central corridor of the home, where a light-filled void, featuring two stacked Fixed Lite Windows that rise 5.5 metres, draws in soft northern light and amplifies the sense of spaciousness.

Nordic Sophistication

Nordic Sophistication

Nordic Sophistication

Framing the light void, a 2.2m-wide Awning Window in the study allows for fresh air circulation, while the 3.3m-wide Fixed Lite Window in the laundry ensures that even the most practical areas feel open and well-lit.

A Perfect Balance of Design and Function at the Back of the Home

At the rear of the home, Rylock’s windows and doors become a focal point, elevating both the design and functionality.

Nordic Sophistication

Nordic Sophistication

Designed to create a seamless flow between indoors and outdoors, the dining area boasts a large 3-panel Fixed Lite Window on the right-hand side, perfectly complementing the 3-panel Commercial Series Stacker Door in the living area. Working in harmony, they create a sense of balance and symmetry, effortlessly linking the two spaces.

From the upstairs stairwell void leading into the master bedroom, a breathtaking vantage point unfolds—offering a second glimpse of the striking Fixed Lite Windows that further strengthen the home’s deep connection to its surroundings.

Rylock

The master bedroom seamlessly extends to a private balcony through a 3.3m-wide Commercial Series Stacker Door, providing an elevated view of the backyard and enhancing the sense of openness.

To improve insulation and maximise energy efficiency, every Rylock window and door in this project is fitted with Grade A Safety Toughened Low-e Double Glazing (Argon Fill). This advanced glazing solution, part of Rylock’s Comfort Solution range, not only ensures durability and safety but also enhances indoor temperature regulation while maximising natural light and uninterrupted views.

Through the thoughtful integration of high-performance glazing, expert craftsmanship, and a refined material palette, this renovation strikes a perfect balance between classic heritage charm and modern functionality—creating a home equally suited for sophisticated entertaining and relaxed family living.

Step inside this exceptional country escape that embraces its unique landscape and provides a peaceful disconnect from the city.

Idyllically located in regional Victoria, this collaborative project was inspired by a group visit to the freshly excavated site where builder Hedger Constructions met with the architect, interior designer, landscape designer and clients to inform the narrative of the build. “The group discussed the strength, yet gentleness, of the surrounding hills and how this should be reflected in the design, materials and plant selections,” explains Steven Hedger, director of Hedger Constructions. “From this we aligned on the optimal orientation and spatial organisation for the site, material approach, colour palette and the home’s integration with the surrounding landscape.”

The residence, situated within a private golf course, is designed for Melbourne-based clients as a “lock and leave” country retreat. The clients expressed their desire for a cosy couple’s getaway that could also accommodate larger groups of visiting friends and family. The solution to divide the floor plan into three separate pavilions connected by glass walkways allows the house to be used or closed off as required, while the central gabled roof living pavilion remains connected and intimate. Sleeping spaces branch east and west from the central pavilion, additionally bridged by a rounded terrace encompassing views southward to the Cathedral Ranges.

Thornton Residence

“The large open living, dining and kitchen area brings its occupants together around the uniquely geometric fireplace which tapers to the roof pitch,” shares Steven. Clad in hand-made ceramic tiles, this dramatic centrepiece of the home is flanked by large-format windows framing the soft and ever-changing forms of the bush beyond.

The floating concrete fireside hearth creates a platform for storage, display and a place of reflection. Here, the perfect window seat is formed with tan leather cushioning, the angled edge of the fireplace creating a comfortable backrest and a rattan pendant casting a warm light, contrasting with the greenery outside.

Sandstone crazy paving applied below the concrete hearth and fireplace adds unique personality to the home. “Integrating the jagged and uneven crazy paving with the blackbutt timber flooring required a meticulous approach,” explains Steven. “This paving was also used in the powder room and the entrance foyer to link the interior of the home to the surrounding hills.”

Thornton Residence

During the warmer months, the full-height glazing on both sides of the central pavilion is completely opened to expand the living spaces to the deck and natural views beyond. “The relationship between the built environment, interior and outdoors is balanced and in harmony,” says Steven. “Each element exists in its own right and in symbiosis with the other.” This is achieved through activating complementary connections and exploring biophilia to replicate natural patterns within the interior. The result is a calming and easy environment to inhabit.

Externally, the materiality speaks to a country aesthetic and features cement blockwork and metal sheeting detail, which also provide the appropriate level of fire protection required for the bush setting. Internally, the rural feel is expressed via the lofty pitched roof, exposed timber trusses and atmospheric black fixing plates.

Concrete benchtops in the open-plan kitchen contribute a sense of strength, while appliances such as the refrigerator are integrated and concealed within custom cabinetry. This considered approach reflects the simplicity, balance and restraint central to the brief.

Thornton Residence

“The two adjacent flat-roofed pavilions are constructed from cement blockwork and are mirrors of each other in design, housing two bedrooms and bathrooms,” continues Steven. Despite the echoed form of the spaces, they each provide a unique experience due to their different orientation, views and material palette. “In the bathrooms there are curved walls and niche shelf storage, finished with handmade textural Moroccan tiles,” adds Steven.

“Achieving a seamless finish with these elements required precision craftsmanship from our trades.” Pared-back but highly detailed subtle contrasts of matt and gloss play between the tiling, brass tapware, bespoke concrete basins and custom steel-framed mirrored storage on sliding tracks.

Thornton Residence

Each of the spacious bedrooms is a restful retreat, with sheer curtains, upholstered bedheads and felt carpet adding layers of softness and warmth. With a colour palette inspired by the native snow gum eucalypts surrounding the home, tones of pale blue, bone and pale terracotta are applied in an organic collage of textures which creates visual interest down to the finest detail.

Thornton Residence, with its “less is more” approach, provides the foundation for retreat without ostentation. Sitting lightly within the landscape, it has been designed to maximise thermal efficiency and draw in the rolling Australian bush beyond. This uncluttered environment provides the homeowners with space to absorb the calm of nature and reset from the bustle of city life in this beautiful dwelling built with distinction.

This rural estate located in Thornton, two hours northeast of Melbourne, is a masterclass in innovative and contemporary lifestyle living.

The 378-hectare property, a renowned Hereford Poll stud farm, comprises of gently undulating river flats, rising to elevated pastures, with panoramic views over the Rubicon Valley and Cathedral Ranges.

The clients engaged luxury custom home builders Hedger Constructions to deliver an extensive estate complex comprising of a main homestead, a two-storey guesthouse and a three-bedroom managers residence. This stunning project has been finished to exacting standards and received widespread acclaim, including multiple Master Builders Association of Victoria (MBAV) awards.

The sprawling homestead is situated on an elevated garden site offering spectacular 360-degree valley views. “The house has a unique spatial organisation, designed as a series of gabled roof pavilions, connected via central light filled shared spaces”, reveals Steven Hedger, Director of Hedger Constructions. “This arrangement provides privacy and an aspect out to nature from all rooms, drawing views into the center of the house and enhancing the sense of connectivity to the landscape”.

The clients required a timeless design with an earthy palette of natural materials which optimised the use of texture to create visual interest. “Australian timber, rammed earth, stone, and polished concrete feature throughout the build”, confirms Steven, “enabling the home to sit in harmony with its country surroundings yet feel truly contemporary in design”.

Thornton Farm, Hedger Constructions

Externally, soaring 3-metre-high rammed earth walls inlayed with panel insulation create a sense of strength to the build. “Made in situ, the rammed earth walls provide excellent thermal mass, temperature and noise control, and durability” says Steven, “They’re also low maintenance and highly fireproof, making them an excellent choice for regional homes”.

250 PFC steel perimeter beams were utilised to span the vast amount of glazing incorporated into the home, whilst also providing a design feature. The extensive floor to ceiling double-glazing package uses Capral framing systems to showcase the rural vistas. Custom profiled ship lapped spotted gum adds visual interest to the gabled areas, with a corrugated roof in zinc completing the natural aesthetic.

The same architectural features flow through to the adjacent lavish pool house. Bifold glass doors wrap around two sides of the pool house, transforming it into a flexible alfresco space, suitable for any season. “A full kitchen with Miele stainless-steel appliances, stone benchtops and abundant storage makes this the ideal location for outdoor entertaining” says Steven.

The 20-metre solar-heated in ground swimming pool with underwater lighting creates a dramatic centerpiece to this outdoor oasis. Thoughtful positioning of the pool provides direct access to the area from the main living space, master bedroom and private ensuite.

Within the homestead, a light-filled central gallery runs the length of the building, connecting the owners and guest wings to the central open plan living space. Throughout the interior rammed earth walls contribute a pared back, but highly detailed texture, providing a sense of tranquility, calm and wellbeing.

The living areas center on a bespoke fireplace design incorporating Cheminees Philippe wood heater in a surround of desert grey natural stone tile. “This sits on an elevated resin buffed concrete hearth with electronic under drawer storage and takes full advantage of the views to the pool area and beyond”, confirms Steven. Porcelain floor tiles, gently warmed with underfloor heating, ensure comfort. The adjacent formal dining space accommodates a 10-seat dining table, softly illuminated by a bespoke chandelier. From here, sliding doors provide access to the undercover outdoor dining area.

In the kitchen, “a large T-shaped marble island bench creates a functional and social space, integrating a full range of stainless-steel Miele products on one end, whilst also providing a 6-seat informal dining space at the opposing side”, says Steven. Accent pendant lights establish an intimate atmosphere, highlighting the luminescent veins of green and gold throughout the stone.

Bespoke custom cabinetry merges seamlessly with travertine benchtops, providing ample food preparation space. The butler’s pantry is discreetly positioned to conceal the working elements of the kitchen, whilst an integrated cool room next to the kitchen also allows for the owners to organise produce in advance when they are away for lengthy periods.

“Extensive use of solid spotted gum timber throughout the home adds to the natural feel, as evidenced in the bespoke joinery of the home office area” confirms Steven. Within the office there are two distinctive zones, providing personalised layouts for the occupants. The space also includes a boardroom table and informal meeting area, serviced by a kitchenette.

Thornton Farm, Hedger Constructions

At either end of the open plan central zone are guest and private wings. In the guest wing, bedrooms feature rammed earth walls and external access to the palatial grounds. This area is serviced by an expansive bathroom including shower room and Candana fixtures.

Within the master wing, bedrooms are inviting, restful sanctuaries. Walk in robes provide ample custom cabinetry, whilst pendant lighting and fine textiles soften the built environment. “The ensuite, with floor to ceiling travertine tiles, creates a sense of openness, as do the louvred windows in the shower areas, that not only have a visual impact, but provide practical cross ventilation” says Steven. Twin vanities are placed at adjacent ends of the space, creating a privacy wall for the free-standing bath beyond. The bath area has been positioned to optimise valley views and can be privatised with the flick of a switch via external helioscreens.

Thornton Farm, Hedger Constructions

A CBUS system and entertainment design were also a key priority for the owners. This innovative technology allows the electrical system to be automated, “including the security monitored front gate, over 2kms from the home”, reveals Steven. “Services are fully integrated and automated including lighting, slab heating, air conditioning, garage doors, thermal pool cover, audio and entertainment systems, and electric windows and blinds”.

Thornton Farm, Hedger Constructions

The thermal qualities of the home fall well above the expectations of structure this size. Rammed earth, extensive insulation, double glazing and the use of sweeping north verandas add to the sustainable features of the home. A 50,000-litre water storage tank provides collection from the roof and is accompanied by a solar hot water system and bathroom fixtures to the highest rating. Helioscreening also allows shielding of windows during heat periods.

Thornton Farm, Hedger Constructions

To achieve a home of this caliber, Hedger Constructions formed a dynamic relationship with the homeowners, who wished to be involved in the project as much as possible. “A significant amount of time was spent with owners in template design and presetting of fixtures, providing them with a definitive sense of what the completed works would look like”, confirms Steven. “This meticulous attention to detail played a huge role in the outstanding quality of the finished construction”.

Thornton Farm, Hedger Constructions

Situated in one of Victoria’s most tightly held agricultural precincts, this exceptional property epitomises an idyllic rural lifestyle. The owner’s vision of state-of-the-art luxury living, delivered with artisan craftsmanship has been brilliantly realised with a contemporary homestead that truly transcends expectation.

This new double storey custom home built by Hedger Constructions is the epitome of modern elegance.

Situated on a suburban Melbourne block, the design intent was to create a unique and timeless home with a clean aesthetic that also utilised colour and texture to create visual interest. Catering for a large family, the home needed to be minimal in upkeep and have an emphasis on lifestyle enjoyment for family and friends, coupled with functionality.

Hedger Constructions

Given its height, it was important that the home not feel imposing. To achieve this, the footprint of the upper floor is smaller than the lower level, and outdoor entertainment spaces including the pool and outdoor kitchen have been carefully positioned, to ensure privacy for occupants and their neighbours.

Externally the home uses a neutral colour palette of polished cement render, with the upper level in a darker tone to accent the deeply inset windows. This innovative design provides appropriate window shading to minimise heat transfer and provide thermal benefits. Powder coated aluminium slats are the primary feature of the external façade ensuring privacy screening and aesthetic appeal. The front entry is designed for wow-factor and includes a rendered front fence and feature dark timber front door with a hemisphere handle.

Hedger Constructions

Upon entry visitors are greeted with expansive over height ceilings, making all the shared spaces throughout the property feel exceptionally large. Feature pendant lighting bathes the space in a golden hue, illuminating access to the steel and timber floating staircase, positioned against a grey feature wall.

Hedger Constructions

Dark timber flooring flows throughout the property, contrasting beautifully with the crisp white interiors. From the wide entry hall, occupants access a series of private spaces including the home office and informal dining and lounge. A concealed sliding door within the hallway provides delineation from these private areas to the shared open plan zone, whilst minimising sound intrusion.

Hedger Constructions

Effortless Entertaining with Open Plan Kitchen, Living, and Dining

The open plan kitchen, living and dining zone provides effortless entertaining. In the kitchen a marbled waterfall end island bench is adorned with timber panelling, adding texture to an otherwise seamless cabinetry design. The inclusion of black tapware and steel window frames create a striking interplay of light and dark, strengthened by the contrast of the dark timber flooring to create a balanced layout.

Hedger Constructions

Within the dining and living space, timber-panelled storage harmonises with marble benchtops, seamlessly merging functionality with aesthetics. An open dining area, subtly sectioned off by privacy walls, adds a sense of intimacy to the expansive design, whilst comfortably including a ten-seat dining table. The living space provides plenty of room for family fun and is positioned with direct access to the outdoor kitchen, dining and entertainment area.

In an exceptional example of indoor and outdoor living, wrap around glazing of the living area allows it to open onto an extensive alfresco space. Accessed via a large sliding glass door this paved, undercover area includes outdoor kitchen and dining facilities, ensuring it can be enjoyed regardless of season. The adjacent inground pool and spa creates an outdoor oasis, ideal for entertaining.

Hedger Constructions

Located on the upper level, each of the bedrooms are spacious and thoughtfully designed. Modernity and comfort converge with automatic draped curtains, incorporating a sheer element that adds privacy and soft light. An upstairs entertainment room is also included, offering a retreat from the main communal areas for the children to enjoy.

The beautiful bathrooms throughout the home feature dark floor-to-ceiling marbled tiling juxtaposed by light marble benchtops. Exemplifying the fusion of form and function, niche shelving adds to the seamless design whilst maximising storage.

Hedger Constructions

With over 30 Master Builders Association Awards to date, including multiple Regional Builder of the Year wins, it’s easy to see how Hedger Constructions have created a reputation as one of Victoria’s best custom home builders. Specialising in luxury custom homes, Hedger Constructions are redefining modern living with homes that transcend the traditional. Every Hedger Constructions home is masterfully crafted with a considered approach toward innovative and sustainable design, and this new Melbourne residence is no exception.
