Inspired by nature, this garden provides an escape from the urban grind.
Carved out of a steep slope, this carefully crafted, thoughtfully designed garden is a peaceful and verdant oasis that perfectly complements its seaside location, just 500m from Patonga Beach on the Central Coast. Featuring custom crazy paving, stand-out architectural detailing and lush greenery, this enchanting holiday-home hideaway built by Exotic Living is a place of escape.
“The goal was to maximise the hillside space and create zones for different activities,” says Mitchell Kushturian, director of Exotic Living. “This included spaces for entertaining, lounging by the pool, and easy access to the rear cabana. A must was an outdoor kitchen that would allow the owners to entertain and cook in a relaxed, natural setting.”
At the homeowners’ request, Mitchell and fellow director Joshua Kushturian, a master craftsman who oversees the construction team, prioritised materials inspired by nature. “They had a deep appreciation for the elegance of natural stone and the warmth of timber, both of which we skilfully integrated throughout the landscape,” says Joshua.
One example of this is the natural stone crazy paving used for the pool surrounds. Another is the expertly crafted floating timber bench seat on the lower level. “This offers a tranquil spot in which to unwind and enjoy the surroundings,” says Mitchell, who drew on his skills as a landscape designer in completing this project. “Timber also makes an appearance in the adjacent batten screening which provides privacy while preserving the openess of the space.”
While the end result looks effortless, the project came with certain challenges. “As the site was located on a steep bank, the topography meant careful planning was needed to ensure the new landscape seamlessly merged with the natural slopes,” explains Joshua. “And while site access was initially open for machinery during the excavation period, the subsequent transportation of materials up the hill — a 25m elevation from the street — proved to be an endeavour.”
Constructing the garden called for exceptional technical skill and precision. Just one example is the steelwork for the block and Shotcrete retaining walls; another is the integration of proper drainage solutions to manage water runoff effectively. Considerable expertise also went into handling the concreting sub-base for the crazy paving and stairs. “The installation of the crazy-paved stairs, with its mitred joins, was a detailed process,” explains Joshua. “Overall, 45sqm of crazy paving was meticulously handcrafted and installed to give the outdoor space an organic and relaxed tropical feel.”
Both Mitchell and Joshua are very proud of this garden, which was the recipient of a Silver award in the Residential Construction $100,000-$150,000 category of the 2023 TLA Landscape Excellence Awards. “Careful consideration of the site’s constraints and opportunities, the incorporation of natural stone and timber, and dedication to craftsmanship were the guiding principles that shaped the design intent and brought this dream retreat to life,” says Mitchell.
