Set against rolling green paddocks and framed by mature trees, this elevated pool and spa project is a masterclass in restraint, balance and smart engineering. Designed as a holiday retreat in the Byron hinterland, the pool sits lightly within its rural setting, offering long views across the landscape while maintaining a sense of privacy and calm.
The pool’s raised form is one of its defining features. Constructed partially out of ground to respond to the natural slope of the site, the structure required detailed planning beneath the surface. Substantial underground footings and carefully considered hydraulics were essential to support the height of the pool while ensuring optimal performance across filtration, cleaning and heating systems.
From the terrace, the pool reads as seamless and serene. A knife-edge tiled angle delivers the visual drama of an infinity edge, allowing water to appear as though it dissolves into the hinterland beyond. Unlike traditional infinity pools, however, this clever design eliminates constant water loss, offering the same luxurious aesthetic with a far more sustainable and low-maintenance outcome — an important consideration for a property not occupied year-round.
Functionality was central to the brief. The homeowners sought a pool that could look after itself between visits, remaining pristine and ready for use at any time. A fully automated PV3 in-floor cleaning system forms the backbone of this approach, working quietly and efficiently beneath the waterline. Paired with Pentair filtration and a Mineral Swim system, the pool delivers clarity and comfort with minimal hands-on maintenance.
Natural stone from Eco Outdoor has been used extensively for the coping and surrounding terraces, grounding the project in its landscape. The varied textures and soft tones of the stone complement the rural backdrop while adding a sense of permanence and timelessness. Integrated seating zones, daybeds and umbrellas create a relaxed resort feel, while subtle Aqua-Quip lighting ensures the space transitions beautifully from day to evening.
The adjoining spa is seamlessly connected to the main pool, mirroring its materials and geometry while offering a more intimate place to unwind. Together, the pool and spa form a cohesive outdoor environment that balances luxury with practicality, and architectural clarity with the ease of holiday living.
