Cliffside infinity: a unique pool design

Perched high on the edge of a hill adjacent to a national park, this infinity-edge pool makes the most of sweeping views while blending with its environment

The owners of this property had an existing pool but wanted something more suitable for their young children.

They also wanted to make the most of the breathtaking views of national parkland below. An infinity edge was a must, but they also wanted something slightly different to the norm.

A curved geometric shape was chosen, with an infinity edge to mimic the organic shape of the hill. The glamorous pool looks as if it hovers over the valley below, completely at peace with the natural surroundings.

The construction of the pool didn’t come without its challenges, given the pool was positioned on the edge of the cliff, and there was no access via the national park below. Extensive scaffolding was used for both demolishing the old pool and building the new one.

“The demolition of the old pool coping on the wet-edge side of the pool required extensive formwork and due to the bushland location, a platform was built below to catch debris, minimising environmental impact. This was then used to build the new pool’s dramatic curved wet edge,” explains Nick McCarthy of Urban Escape Landscaping and Pools.

What really sets the pool apart is the high-quality finish on the curved infinity edge. “The curved wet edge needed to be completed within extremely fine tolerances to ensure it worked with the design and looked impeccable and seamless with the environment,” adds Nick.

Despite appearing completely natural, the pool has all of the contemporary mod cons. “All-new filters, pumps, solar, pool cleaner and automation were included to ensure ease of use for the owner,” says Nick.

Urban Escape was recognised for its high-quality workmanship in the build of this pool by winning the SPASA NSW and ACT gold award for Best Residential Concrete Pool — $50,000 to $100,000 at the 2016 awards, and most recently winning a bronze award for Residential Concrete Pool — $50,000 to $100,000 at the national SPASA Australia 2016 Awards of Excellence.
