A shipping container reimagined as a sleek, elevated pool

Perched alongside a contemporary coastal home in Cape Schanck, this elevated container pool is a clever response to both site and lifestyle. Designed to align seamlessly with the home’s upper-level living areas, the pool delivers immediate accessibility, expansive views and a striking architectural presence — without the complexity of a traditional in-ground build.

For the homeowners, the brief was simple but highly considered: create a pool that could be easily accessed from the main living zone, eliminating the need to navigate stairs while
also enhancing the experience of their holiday home. With older family members in mind and a desire for low-maintenance, high-impact design, the solution needed to be both practical and visually engaging.

Whyte Gardens, led by Andrew Whyte, approached the project holistically, designing not only the landscape, but also coordinating the integration of the pool itself. The result is a cohesive outdoor environment where architecture, planting and water work in quiet harmony with the surrounding golf course landscape.

Rather than excavating into the site, the team opted for a 12m-long container pool built by Shipping Container Pools. Elevated to meet the level of the existing deck, the pool creates a fluid transition from indoors to out, reinforcing a strong sense of connection between the home and its surroundings. This decision also delivered significant efficiencies in both cost and installation time — an ideal outcome for a holiday property not in constant use.

One of the standout features of the design is the inclusion of glass viewing panels along the side of the pool. These windows introduce a dynamic visual element, allowing glimpses of shimmering water from the garden below while also offering swimmers a unique perspective outward. It’s a detail that elevates the pool beyond function, transforming it into a sculptural feature within the landscape.

The material palette has been kept deliberately restrained to complement the home’s modern coastal aesthetic. Composite decking provides a clean, durable coping edge, while frameless glass fencing by Blue Croc ensures uninterrupted sightlines across the lawn and into the adjoining golf course. The surrounding planting, designed and installed by Whyte Gardens, softens the structure with layered greenery, grounding the pool within its environment.

Connection to place was a key driver throughout the project. Rather than competing with the open landscape beyond, the design frames and enhances it. The pool sits lightly within the site, allowing the expansive greens and native vegetation of the golf course to remain the hero, while still offering a private and immersive outdoor experience.

Of course, the build came with its own challenges. Installing a container pool at height required precision planning, particularly when it came to craning the structure over the newly completed home. With a three-storey lift to contend with, the operation was as impressive as it was delicate, yet was executed seamlessly through careful coordination between all parties involved.

At its core, this project is a reflection of thoughtful, purpose-driven design. It demonstrates that a pool doesn’t need to be overly complex or extravagant to be impactful. By responding directly to the needs of the homeowners and the conditions of the site, Whyte Gardens has delivered a solution that is both economical and elegant, perfectly suited to relaxed coastal living.
