Where clever design meets year-round luxury living

Sitting quietly on a small acreage lot in leafy Wakerley, Queensland, this resort-style pool by Norfolk Pools is a lifestyle centrepiece. Designed by Danica Vansleve-Sheil and built by Norfolk Pools, this project weaves together relaxation, function, and a touch of indulgence into one show-stopping space.

From the first glance, it’s clear this pool was made to impress. Its crisp geometric lines contrast beautifully with soft landscaping and natural stone elements, delivering a visual punch that’s both modern and inviting.

With a negative-edge, raised spa that practically begs you to soak away the day, and a sunken lounge with its own firepit for cooler evenings, this is outdoor living done right.

Norfolk Pools

A space designed to be lived in

Built within a retained and levelled building envelope, the pool sits proudly at the rear of the house, aligned with the home’s living zones. Thoughtfully elevated, it maintains an outlook to adjacent parkland while limiting fencing without compromising safety.

The brief from the homeowners, a dynamic family of four with grown kids and a penchant for entertaining, was clear: create something magazine-worthy. They wanted a sophisticated yet relaxed outdoor space that transitioned easily from a casual summer pool dip to an elegant winter wine by the fire. And Norfolk Pools delivered.

Elegance in the detail

Every feature has purpose and presence. Travertine pavers and coping from The Pool Tile Company provide a refined, timeless finish. Inside the pool, Tempest and Alpine glass tiles sparkle in the Queensland sun, subtly defining wading areas and step edges. Underfoot and unseen, high-performance Insnrg filtration keeps things pristine, while the Maytronics Dolphin X6 robot makes light work of pool cleaning.

Sunbather’s solar system works in tandem with Insnrg gas heating, ensuring the spa is warm and welcoming no matter the season. Integrated PAL and Spa Electrics LED lighting elevate the mood into the evening, with strip lighting subtly highlighting different levels of the space, like the sculptural steps into the spa or the sunken lounge’s perimeter.

Danica’s clever approach to materials and layout makes the most of the site’s unique shape, using height transitions and textures to zone areas while maintaining flow. Raised garden beds soften the structural elements and offer a burst of green against the neutral tones of stone and decking.

Norfolk Pools

Challenges that shaped the design

Like any truly bespoke project, this one came with a few complexities. The pool area had to be built around a significant native gum tree — a protected feature that couldn’t be moved. This meant adjusting fencing strategies, engineering solutions, and ultimately leaning into the tree’s presence as a focal part of the natural palette.

Access and elevation also played a role. With an 800mm drop between the home and the lawn below, Norfolk Pools turned what could have been a problem into a design opportunity, incorporating that height into a negative-edge feature and creating a pond that serves both visual and practical needs.

A complete outdoor transformation

More than just a pool builder, Norfolk Pools — through Danica’s leadership — managed the entire outdoor design. From patio extensions to custom arbours and integrated seating, every inch was considered. This cohesive approach means the space doesn’t just look beautiful, it works. Whether it’s a quick morning swim, a Friday night barbecue with friends or a lazy Sunday spa session, this backyard delivers.

Translating client visions

With more than 50 years of experience in crafting luxury swimming pools, Norfolk Pools is renowned for its ability to translate client visions into breathtaking realities. Specialising in high-end custom builds across Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Norfolk Pools combines industry-leading expertise with a commitment to superior craftsmanship. The company’s award-winning reputation is reflected in its numerous accolades, including the 2023 and 2024 SPASA Qld Pool Designer of the Year and the 2022 Qld Pool of the Year. A clever use of level changes transforms this sloping site into a lush, multi-zoned pool sanctuary

When landscape architect John Storch of A Total Concept Landscape Architects and Pool Designers first inspected this site, he saw the potential to create something unique where three other landscape designers were baffled. The brief from the clients was to incorporate a new swimming pool for family entertaining in an extremely elevated backyard on a very steep sloping block, integrating the area with the home. The new dwelling had been placed at a much lower level than the rear garden and there was no access between the two spaces.

“What I really love about this project is the challenge to get the design right at a reasonable construction cost,” says John. “Everything must be considered.”

The home’s kitchen and living areas had no outlook, opening immediately onto a cut rock face that was approximately 3.5m high, leading to the rear of the property. The solution was to create a series of level terraces, including a large informal entertaining area with firepit, gardens, lawn and a swimming pool with timber deck areas with broad generous informal precast concrete steps linking all.

A Total Concept

The terraces and wide steps have the effect of integrating the spaces, providing interest with beautifully flowering gardens, drawing you up to the swimming pool area. An outlook has been created from the kitchen area by opening up the rear with large sliding doors, pushing the vertical cut further back and placing a large window in the swimming pool central to the home’s outlook as a feature.

The swimming pool was placed high to minimise rock excavation, and the natural timber entertaining deck is a cost-effective solution for a property with no access. The pool has broad steps d ledges for entertaining purposes and is large enough to incorporate comfortable chairs and sun lounges. The colours of the paving and walling materials have been selected to unify with the sandstone tones of the finishes used on the home and to match closely with the surrounding rock.

The swimming pool has a depth of 1200-1800mm, with a light-blue colour created with white interior pebble and tiles. It blends beautifully with the natural-style timber deck and greys of the garden. All colours have been further selected to contrast with the surrounding Murraya hedge to make the design pop.

Plants utilised along the boundary include quick-growing glossy green Murraya paniculata (Orange jessamine) for screening purposes and elsewhere contrasting greys of Westringia fruticose (coastal rosemary), Anigozanthos flavidus (kangaroo paw) and Juniperus conferta (coastal sprawl). Colour is introduced to create interest using Tulbaghia violacea (society garlic) and Trachelospermum jasminioides (Star jasmine).

“I love that we have the ability to help clients with complex, challenging projects like this and to get it right, first time,” says John.

The team at A Total Concept have succeeded in creating a beautiful environment for these homeowners that reflects the practice’s philosophy of “A Total Concept”, adding immeasurably to the clients’ lifestyle and property value. A Total Concept is an established award-winning practice specialising in creating striking outdoor spaces that integrate beautiful and functional swimming pools, gardens and cabanas. Its projects range from simple family homes or elaborate residential properties to boutique and resort-style developments.

John Storch and the team from A Total Concept provide services extending from consultations, designs and specifications, council approvals and builder recommendations to the total management of projects. A Total Concept brings together all aspects of the project, assisting with specifying pool equipment to the choice of materials and colours, cabana fixtures and fittings, paving selections, lighting, plants and changes to home.

Clean lines and a seamless design

This stunning backyard oasis delivers effortless resort-style living. Installed by the expert team at Pool Installations Australia P/L in collaboration with Miami Pools Melbourne, the result is an inviting pool area that speaks volumes when it comes to luxury, comfort and clever planning.

From the moment Craig and Danielle engaged Wayne Gibson — CEO of Pool Installations Australia — things began to take shape quickly and confidently. With a longstanding connection between Wayne and Craig’s fathers from their days in Swan Hill, there was an instant sense of trust. A few site visits and detailed consultations later, their backyard vision was well on its way to becoming a reality.

“Our clients are a young family who wanted to bring a bit of resort-style living into their home,” says Wayne. “The brief was clear — a pool that felt like part of the home, perfect for entertaining, relaxing, and growing with their family.”

Pool Installations

With a Summertime Pools Flinders shell chosen for its elegant rectangular shape and integrated seating, the pool measures 7.3m long and 3.9m wide, with depths ranging from 1.2m to 1.75m. Stylish dark pavers frame the pool and flow effortlessly into a lush garden of layered greens and climbing vines, enhanced by the clients’ thoughtful landscaping.

The installation wasn’t without its challenges. “There was virtually no access to the backyard, and power lines out front posed a real issue,” explains Wayne. “Thankfully, the neighbour generously allowed us to use their driveway for access and we brought in a mini crawler crane and our Pool Installations trolley. This way we could safely manoeuvre the shell into place.”

Fitted with a Vortex EXE 17kW electric heat pump, Theralux mineral filtration system, and a Dolphin robotic cleaner, the pool is as smart as it is stylish. Two PAL Colour Touch LED lights provide ambient lighting, while custom lounge seating and chic landscaping make the pool zone as comfortable as it is eye-catching. A magnesium-based water system further enhances the eco-conscious credentials of this modern build.

The finished space is sophisticated and considered; every detail, from the curved paving edge to the pristine white sun lounges, delivers a sense of calm and cohesion. “Good design is all about flow,” Wayne notes. “This pool doesn’t feel like an add-on — it feels like it’s always been part of the home.”

Operating since 2001, Pool Installations Australia and Miami Pools Melbourne are trusted names in Victoria’s pool industry. With decades of combined experience, specialised equipment and a hands-on approach, they offer end-to-end pool solutions, from initial consultation to installation and finishing touches. Whether facing tricky access, tight timelines or unique design requirements, this team has the tools and talent to bring dream pools to life.

An extra-deep swimming pool and raised circular spa bring the front yard of this Victorian property to life, allowing year-round enjoyment for the owners

With a year-round love of water and swimming, these homeowners envisaged their future pool would be a showpiece they could admire from their California-style home, positioned on a special property with an abundance of fruit trees. However, rather than be situated in the backyard, the pool and spa were to be in the front yard, bringing this area of the property to life.

The clients and their kids love to swim and will even swim in the bay every day of the year. In addition, they also wanted a pool and spa that could be used for leisure. “For their front yard location, the clients asked for a 3m-deep swimming pool and a raised circular spa with rolled edges,” explains Clinton Bourke, director of Award Pools Construction Group, which was entrusted with the build. Minimal fencing, low maintenance and a complementary California-style design were also on the owners’ wish list.

Award Pool

Award Pools Construction Group built the 7m-long pool, laid the paving, and worked with Dusk Home Builders and the client on the design, which also incorporates a curved wall on one side. “This project really is something different; because of the size of the front yard, it shows what can be achieved in tight spaces,” says Bourke.

Pentair MasterTemp gas heating, as well as solar heating, allows the family to enjoy the pool and spa, regardless of the weather conditions. “The clients now swim in the pool all year round, and their kids love the spa, which gets used weekly,” he says.

Award Pool

Clinton Bourke, director of Award Pools Construction Group — a family-owned-and-operated business based on the Mornington Peninsula — focuses on building around 25 concrete swimming pools a year to ensure 100 per cent customer satisfaction. Clinton has been in the pool industry for more than 20 years, building award-winning quality pools and spas for residential clients of the Mornington Peninsula and metropolitan Melbourne.

“We offer our clients a seamless experience, from initial meet and greet through to handover,” explains Bourke. “Our commitment is one of excellence, achieved through well-designed and precision-built pools, plus regular communication and transparency with our clients to keep them informed throughout all stages of the build.”

Award Pool

Award Pools Construction Group consists of a small team of experienced staff who are all highly skilled, qualified and experts in their fields. “We offer quality construction, innovation in design and product, and the best technology and systems available on the market,” says Bourke.

The company is a member of Master Pool Builders and SPASA.

A modern pool with spa in Baulkham Hills

Nestled in the rolling hills of Kenthurst, this stunning new pool and spa, designed and constructed by Jade Swimming Pools, offers a luxurious escape for a young, active family. Combining modern design with the natural slope of the land, this outdoor haven not only enhances the property’s aesthetics, but provides a private retreat for recreation and entertainment.

Located on a sloping block, this 11m x 5m pool and accompanying 4sqm spa are perfectly positioned at the lower level of the property, ensuring a seamless integration into the surrounding landscape. The pool was designed by Matthew Daniel of Jade Pools, who worked closely with the clients to ensure the finished product complemented the space while maximising its views.

Jade Pools

“We wanted to make sure that the pool was functional, but also that it took full advantage of the property’s amazing outlook. We used the existing retaining walls and extended paving to create easy access, blending everything together to form a beautiful, practical design,” explains Matthew.

Jade Pools

The pool’s clean, rectangular shape features a smooth, natural interior finish in Jewels4Pools’ Pearl, which contrasts beautifully with the Silver Travertine paving and coping. The integrated Oasis Smart Aquatics Automation system allows the owners to control everything from lighting to pool chemistry at the touch of a button, making maintenance simple and convenient.

A seamless design with a family focus

For the owners, the primary aim was to create a space where the entire family could gather, entertain and relax. As repeat clients of Jade Pools, they were clear about their vision from the outset: a family-friendly space that complemented the surrounding landscape and provided a tranquil retreat.

The pool includes a number of standout features that add to its appeal. The 2m x 2m spa offers a relaxing spot to unwind, while the Sunbather Downunder pool blanket, housed in a purpose-built tank, provides thermal protection for the pool throughout the year.

Jade Pools

A design that works in harmony

The completed project is a testament to good design principles, balancing function, aesthetics and budget. The design maximises the site’s natural beauty while delivering a highly functional space that works for the family’s lifestyle. The pool’s modern look fits perfectly with the natural surroundings, and the spa’s addition ensures a place for quiet relaxation and socialising.

“We always take into account how the design will be used and ensure that everything serves a functional purpose. For this project, creating that connection with the surrounding environment was a priority, as was providing a space that would work for the clients and their young family,” says Matthew.

Founded by John and Helen Daniel, Jade Swimming Pools has built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality, custom-designed pools tailored to family needs. The company specialises in creating pools that seamlessly blend functionality with aesthetics, while also addressing a variety of site challenges across Sydney. Each year, Jade Pools constructs 30 to 40 pools across areas like the Lower Blue Mountains, Eastern Suburbs, Northern Suburbs, Hawkesbury, Western Suburbs and Inner West.

The company’s commitment to excellence has been recognised with numerous awards. In 2023, it won the SPASA Gold Award for Courtyard or Small Pool over $80,000. The business’s exceptional work also earned it the 2022 SPASA National Award for Residential Water Feature, and the 2021 SPASA Gold Award for Residential Water Feature. These accolades reflect the company’s dedication to creating innovative and beautiful pool designs that enhance the lifestyle of every client.

A bold waterfront masterpiece

The geometric pool, boatshed and gardens of this exquisite waterfront property overlooking Pittwater combine to make a striking statement.

By day, the geometric pool reflects the surrounding gardens and the tranquil harbour. By night, it captures the light of the house and gardens, becoming a striking focal point. Together, the pool and gardens create a bold statement that enhances the elegance of this stylish waterfront home, showcasing the perfect marriage of architecture, design and nature.

The project was designed by A Total Concept and the vision was brought to life by The Mahony Group, which built the pool and surrounds. The Mahony Group’s attention to detail in construction, thoughtful plantings and commitment to ongoing care and maintenance ensured a flawless result with minimal disruption.

Access to the home was limited as it sits on the waterfront and can only be reached by inclinator. As a result, the pool had to be carefully excavated by hand, with small machinery delivered by barge. Over 50m³ of spoil, including the remnants of an old pool buried underground, was excavated and removed via barge. The compact site left no room for stockpiling materials, so once the structures were in place, 30m³ of filling material was brought back by barge to backfill the spaces.

Mahony Group

The pool was constructed by The Mahony Group with precision, featuring clean, straight lines and no internal curves. The concrete was poured — an unconventional method for pool builders — allowing for the installation of large-format 1200mm x 600mm tiles. These striking black natural-stone tiles, set with black epoxy grout, subtly shift in colour, transitioning from black to blue to green to grey. The hues mirror the changing moods of the sky and the nearby harbour, adapting to the prevailing weather conditions.

The surrounding paving, laid with large-format ash-toned stone, complements the contemporary geometric shapes of the pool, poolside area, inbuilt lounges, and firepit.

To preserve the unobstructed water views, glass fencing has been kept to a minimum, with the clever design of a moat separating the pool from the elevated home and its adjoining entertaining area.

Mahony Group

The gardens are thoughtfully planted with a mix of water-wise native and succulent species. Their organic shapes contrast and soften the sharp lines of the contemporary design, creating an attractive backdrop for the pool, visible from the home.

The expansive infinity edge of the heated pool offers the perfect spot for daydreaming, with sweeping views across Pittwater towards Lion Island. For those seeking a place to entertain, the poolside area is partially shaded and includes all the features needed for both relaxation and recreation, such as inbuilt lounges, gas flame torches and a firepit.

Mahony Group

The Mahony Group is a renowned Sydney-based construction and landscape company that has built its reputation on a holistic approach to residential projects. Founded in 2003 by the Mahony brothers, the company has grown to offer four integrated divisions — Construction, Landscape, Pools and Maintenance — all under one roof. Known for their approachable, professional team, the Mahony Group excels in managing complete projects from start to finish, whether it’s a new home, renovation, pool or landscape design. By handling every stage of the process, they ensure peace of mind for clients, offering exceptional value and seamless results.

A simple-style pool sits seamlessly up high on a cliff to take advantage of its steep site and enviable Gold Coast views

Situated in a historic village at the foot of the gorgeous Gold Coast hinterland, this Mediterranean-inspired pool is a breath of fresh air, and with its exceptional views, allows the homeowners to enjoy the high life – literally.

Built out of the ground, on a very steep hillside, the pool’s construction caters for the sloping block. It was also inspired by the need to create a classic modern look to accompany renovations to the existing house. “The pool is 1.8m high out of the ground and built on a cliff, for a more open look, so that the owners can look out over the mountains to the stunning vista,” explains Mario Lukenda, director of La Vida Pools and Spas Qld.

Designed and built by La Vida Pools and Spas Qld in a classic modern shape, the 8m-long pool appears as though it is seamless to the property. “To achieve this, the client wanted something simple that didn’t stand out too much, and to look like it was always there,” says Mario.

Featuring an ice-blue Spraycrete pebble interior and a generous-sized bench seat spanning three-quarters of its length, the pool offers both visual appeal and practicality.

“In the creation of our pool area, we entrusted La Vida with the formidable task of transforming our elevated landscape, predominantly loose fill with a steep gradient, into a structurally sound and visually stunning oasis,” explain homeowners Shane and Cherie.

“With a desire for a pool that boasted a captivating vista, we knew achieving this wouldn’t be straightforward or inexpensive. La Vida rose to the challenge, engineering not only a beautiful pool, but also one capable of supporting itself and adjacent structures in an unstable environment.”

To accommodate the weight of the surrounding 50sqm indoor dining and cinema area, along with a 30sqm deck on the opposing side, the area stands on 26 deep running piers, ensuring stability. The long side of the pool doubles as a retaining wall, providing support for the eastern-facing observation deck.

Guests can luxuriate in the water while sipping beverages at the custom-made stools of the swim-up bar. Surrounding the pool are Mediterranean-inspired elements, including a natural stone arch in Thredbo White Mica Random (supplied by Neo Rox Natural Stone), floating beanbags by Cabo Club, and a seamless Cover Crete finish along the pool’s edge that eliminates the need for traditional coping tiles.

“Against all odds, La Vida has delivered a breathtaking and functional pool area, exceeding all expectations,” say Shane and Cherie.

This clever pool renovation created a perfect low-maintenance escape

Breeze Pool Projects was tasked with breathing new life into a tired and worn-out pool. What began as a renovation project for a pool suffering from significant wear and tear, including rust, cracked concrete and damaged walls, turned into a stunning transformation — now a fully tiled pool that promises durability and style for decades to come. With a brief to create a low-maintenance, hassle-free space that would be the ultimate Portsea escape, the result is a spectacular pool that enhances the property and stands out for all the right reasons.

The owners, a family with a busy international lifestyle, were looking for an easy-to-maintain outdoor haven that would offer them and their guests a perfect space to unwind when in Australia. “They wanted a reliable space to return to that wouldn’t require constant upkeep,” explains Ash from Breeze. “They were after a renovation that not only improved the aesthetics, but also added lasting value.”

The existing pool had seen better days. The back wall had become detached, cracks were evident, and rust had made its mark on the structure. Working with the challenging site, Breeze’s team carried out concrete repairs, waterproofed the pool, and then fully tiled it with Glacier Grey tiles from The Pool Tile Company. These changes have significantly extended the pool’s lifespan, guaranteeing it another 30-40 years of enjoyment.

Breeze Pool Projects’ attention to detail and quality craftsmanship shines through, especially with the addition of new Spa Electrics lights, enhancing the pool’s ambience both day and night. With the focus on creating a seamless, low-maintenance environment, this renovation perfectly aligns with the homeowners’ busy lifestyle and desire for relaxation at their coastal sanctuary.
