When creating her forever family home, Bonnie of the Three Birds knew the roof choice was Elemental™ when it came to completing the look

An important part of being a parent is protecting the ones you love – and it’s a responsibility that particularly resonates with Bonnie Hindmarsh of The Three Birds Renovations.

The mother of four young boys – 12-year-old Archie, 10-year-old Buster, nine-year-old Rowdy and two-year-old Dodge – Bonnie’s vision for her new home was all about creating a beautiful yet still practical family home.

“You design the house for your family – I have designed the whole house for our family – and they are going to love it,” says Bonnie.

Set on five acres on Sydney’s outskirts, the Hindmarsh family’s new home is a beautiful haven, with a design that blends coastal and country – with a pure white aesthetic, inside and out. And when it came to choosing the right product for her roof, it had to have those same practical properties, without compromising on its beauty.

“Out here, we are in the elements – wind, rain, hail,” Bonnie says. “My last roof got destroyed by hail and I was flooded for weeks and weeks and it was horrendous. So it needed to be durable and it needed to be something I didn’t have to worry about.

Bonnie chose Monier’s Elemental™ Shingle in Salt Spray (a shade of white, of course) to cap off her generously sized new home. The home design incorporates small internal courtyards and large full-length windows throughout the house, allowing light into all the rooms and making a feature out of the white roof as it takes in all the angles of the smaller pavilion-style buildings.

A u-shaped rear entertaining area is centred around a pool, outdoor kitchen and sunken living space – and overlooking the tennis court and plenty of space for the four young boys to burn off their excess energy.

Bonnie says she loves the social aspect of the house’s design. “It’s all about entertaining,” she says. “It’s a total party house.”

The multiple living and dining spaces have also won favour with the other key decision maker in the house – Bonnie’s husband Nathan.

“There’s a number of spaces to go to, so if the kids are annoying me in one room, I can go to a different room,” he says simply.

Creating the perfect family home

1. A parent’s retreat. Bonnie chose her favourite room at the front of the house for a parents-only living space. The kids have their own room at the other end of the house.

2. Internal courtyards between sections of the house. Breezeways between wings of the house allow each room to overlook their own spots of greenery – with every space adjoining a sunny courtyard.

3. A pool! Does more need to be said? The pool is centered at the rear of the house, accompanied by a sunken lounge and adjacent to an outdoor entertaining area. “When you are nowhere near the coast, the only way to get water views is with a pool,” says Lana of the Three Birds.

4. Resort-style planting to create a relaxed holiday feel. “It’s all about palms and water and greenery and outdoor plants,” says Bonnie. “We’ve also got frangipanis everywhere because they create that coastal vibe.”

5. Outdoor kitchens are a great way to entertain when you have children. They contain the mess outdoors when the gang is over – and keeps the adults near the pool as supervisors.
