Size, colour, and style are crucial when selecting the perfect artwork for your home.

Artwork is often the focal point of a room, so it is essential to make the right decision.

Size & Scale

It is important to make sure that the artwork is the right size and scale for your room. If you have a large wall and you don’t want too much empty space around it, if in doubt always go bigger, this can give the illusion that the room is larger than it actually is.

If you’re hanging artwork over a piece of furniture such as a bed, couch, or sideboard, it is important to make sure the artwork is not the same width. This will draw your eye towards one line and will not take in the entire size and scale of the room. It is often best to buy artwork at least 20cm wider or narrower than the furniture it sits above.

Plume Gallery Art Peice

Scale is equally as important as size, ensure that your chosen artwork fits spatially in your room, with the art being hung at eye height not too low or too high.

Colour

Choosing artwork first when styling a space enables you to develop a colour palette for your entire room. For example, soft furnishings, such as bedlinen, cushions, rugs, and furniture upholstery. Choosing art to match pre-existing home accessories is often much harder and more difficult to achieve the desired result.

Colour plays a huge part in the mood and feel of your room. Neutral colour palettes are 5meless and give a sense of calm. Bright palettes of reds, pinks and oranges depict a happy and fun décor. Gold and blacks create a more lux/opulent interior.

Purchasing a commission

Buying commissioned artwork from your favourite artist is a great way to ensure the artwork is the right size and incorporates all your favourite colours. It is important not to ask the artist to stray from their style of artwork as this may result in disappointment for all involved.

Love your artwork!

Choose art that makes you feel good and that you connect with. You’ll be looking at it every day for many years. Don’t choose art just because it’s trendy. Choose art that evokes memories and feelings, reflects your personal style, and makes you feel good. Remember, art is meant to be enjoyed!

Do you struggle to make it to art gallery openings or new exhibitions? Good news: art-mageddon is here and Art Lovers Australia is leading the charge towards a more inclusive and interactive artistic environment

Opened in October 2016, Art Lovers is an artist-run online gallery that has quickly gained a following of fans and an eclectic stable of emerging and established artists from around the country.

With everything from sculptures and paintings to drawings, prints and photography readily available for sale, the virtual gallery and marketplace caters to artists, art enthusiasts and rookies entering the creative milieu.

The pair responsible for this new venture is Nancy Donaldson and Jarrod Knight, an entrepreneurial couple from the Gold Coast who have been making, admiring and collecting art for two decades. Jarrod, a children’s book author, and Nancy, an art educator for over 20 years, dreamed of creating a space that put the predominantly physical medium of visual art online. “People love being surrounded by beautiful and interesting objects and art is a big part of that,” says Nancy.

The idea for the business blossomed after a session of tea and scones at the Tweed River Gallery, where Nancy and Jarrod realised the Aussie market was begging for an interactive space so more individuals could see and access local art. Likewise, they fancied making the gateway into the savage world of commercial art a little easier.
More than just selling art, the online marketplace offers a personal approach to commercial art via exclusive experiences, workshops, tours and retreats.

Jarrod and Nancy understand that most of us are time poor, and we don’t always have the hours needed to visit as many galleries as we’d like, or find a perfect piece of art that aligns with our budget. “Art Lovers Australia can guide you through the process quickly and make it significantly simpler for you,” says Nancy. “Head to Art Lovers Australia’s online gallery to discover some of Australia’s best emerging talent, and while you are there make sure you vote for your favourite artworks to be in with a chance to win a $1000 art voucher.”

If you’re an artist hoping to get a foot in the door, a buyer looking to add to their collection or a rookie keen to learn more about the scene, Art Lovers Australia has it all in one place.

Art Lovers Australia discusses integrating art into your home.

One of the most accessible and practical ways to transform a living space is via the inclusion of art.  The sheer presence of art can help modernise, rejuvenate or simply improve the space we occupy. When considering an art purchase there are a few key factors worth deliberating on.

Most  agree that art can do pretty powerful things to our emotional condition. Before adding art to a living space, be clear about the mood and atmosphere  you want to create.  Select pieces whose  subjects and compositions most closely reflect or elevate this feeling.

A major consideration will be is the utilisation of colour. When making decisions about which art to introduce, study the colour themes and configurations currently in the room and make decisions accordingly. The colours present in the art can greatly compliment or offset existing interiors and make significant alterations to the room’s temperature. Furthermore, the colours that exist in a space can have a noticeable effect on one’s psychological state. Art Lovers Australia offers a simple online colour psychology guide that can help assist in the planning of these modifications.

Incorporating art into frequently accessed areas can create a stimulating focal point and inspire thought-provoking conversation.  Abstract art can make for a wonderful selection here, due to its open, interpretative nature.

Above all else, ensure the artistic choices you invite into your dwelling remain true to, and ultimately reflect upon, your personality. It’s important that the art you chose does not evaporate your comfortable living conditions and should enhance your living experience in the space.

If you’re looking for affordable, original art in a variety of styles, colours and sizes then visit Art Lovers Australia’s online gallery for the perfect design solution.

Amidst the hilarity, drama and tension on Nine’s The Block, we’ve been noticing some absolute gems for home design enthusiasts and inspiration-seekers

We’re pretty excited that this week is main bathroom week on The Block. Bathrooms are one of our specialties and we love seeing them featured on TV! This particular episode was jam packed with great ideas – here are our top three:

1.Use artworks to introduce elements of your chosen design style into a space.

H1_R2_GuestBed_Will_Karlie-27

Last night’s guest bedroom reveal winners Karlie and Will did this particularly effectively, as demonstrated at the beginning of tonight’s episode.

An artwork is compelling way of adding character to a space without cluttering or overstating it. Alternatively, consider a piece of statement furniture, such as the feature bookcase which was included in Andy and Ben’s guest bedroom.

H3_R2_Guestbed_AB-36

2.Sell items you are discarding from the original space, when undertaking a renovation.

Andy and Ben’s DIY auction attempt for the bath they decided to discard may not be the most feasible method of selling unwanted item, despite the entertainment factor. However, putting these items up for sale online or via word of mouth could be an effective way of injecting some extra cash into the renovation budget, so that you can afford to hire that interior designer you’ve heard great things about, or add an extra touch of luxe to your newly renovated space.

3.Consider the bigger picture, when planning your space.

At one point during the episode, Julia and Sasha contemplated moving a bathroom wall to make space for a desk at the entrance, in order make use of dead space.

While they ultimately decided against this, the conversation did bring up a good point – if you want to eliminate dead space, during a renovation is an ideal time to look into this.

From a 19th century apartment in Bergamo, a modern space is created

There comes a time in every household when you need to stop and consider if a redesign is in order. As families change and grow, your home should adapt, too, reflecting the status quo. Focusing on updating the kitchen, living room, dining room and a portion of the entrance hall, Gabriele and Oscar Buratti from Buratti Architetti were tasked with giving this historic apartment in Bergamo, Italy, new life.

Renovating an entire residence can be a daunting process, but selecting a few rooms can make a world of difference to the atmosphere and character of a space. “The project was not about the whole apartment, only the most public areas,” says Gabriele. “Looking at the existing home, we understood those rooms were already special; the historical atmosphere created by the decorated flooring, ceilings, windows and doors was mixed=QUOTE= with art pieces from the clients. So we decided to make some specific additions that were strong and contemporary compared to the old apartment.”

Mixing the old with the new is a favoured design technique that highlights the best of both worlds. And when working with an apartment full of unique accents, it’s important to get this balance right. “We adopted a conservative approach, retaining some features like doors, window frames and floors, but removed everything that had been added over the years,” says Gabriele. “We changed the old layout in the kitchen, removing an existing wall to create a new big room for the kitchen and dining. This new space has been divided in two by a bespoke red glass partition that hides the tall unit of the kitchen.” A functional design feature, the red partition is the ideal centrepiece for the mostly neutral space, which revolves around a palette of warm timber, black and white. The new kitchen also features a grey basalt stone feature wall that adds texture and a point of difference to the kitchen.

In the living quarters, full-height glass doors with a film finish in different shades produces a soft pink colour, opening or closing off the space to the connecting room. “We designed items that are functional furniture elements and pieces with their own aesthetic quality, which have direct dialogue with the other art pieces in the home,” says Gabriele. The entrance hall also received some attention from Gabriele and Oscar, with the installation of a new timber screen comprising strips of different-sized rough-cut wenge timber, lined with grey hide and accents of brass detailing.

For a family of five, the revamp of their home meshes timeless style with the historic features of the 19th-century apartment. The end result is a stunning space full of custom accents that hit the mark when it comes to modern sophistication.

What started as a French school project is now a thriving art hub for culturists around the globe

Photographs are quite simply a wonder of the modern world. The ability to capture a moment and visually consume it time and time again is something we never tire of. For most, displaying these works of art adds character to the home and reflects those who occupy the space. In 2009, Yellowkorner was introduced as a school project in France, which has since evolved to comprise 95 galleries spread across five continents in just six years. So who can we thank for bringing world-class photographers to our shores?

Lifelong friends Cyril Catteau and Laurent Rabot share a common passion — photography. Travelling around=QUOTE= the world together on photographic expeditions, the duo came across Yellowkorner during a European getaway, which would prove to be a life- and career-altering event. “Cyril is an engineer by trade and my background is in banking and property development,” says Laurent. “During a trip in 2012, we came across Yellowkorner and decided to bring it to Australia. Our first gallery was opened in Bondi Junction in October 2013.”

Not just another print shop churning out masses of inferior pieces, each image on offer is reviewed by an artistic panel in Europe, that hand-picks every photograph in the catalogue to ensure the selection remains diverse and balanced. “We work with some of the most talented artists in the world and we take a lot of pride in producing superb, quality prints,” says Laurent. “Yellowkorner works with more than 250 photographers representing all walks of life.”

Boasting pieces from David Hamilton, Slim Aarons and Man Ray, the gallery offers more than 3500 photographs available in six different formats and a range of finishes, too.

With each gallery serving as a meeting place for members of the public and artists alike to exchange ideas, Yellowkorner is a point of difference in a consumer-driven market. Offering unique pieces that capture a broad array of subjects, there’s surely a piece for even the most discerning critics among us.
