A revamped coastal-front home with an aim to maintain the original charm but add a more refreshed feel.

This stunning coastal-front home was originally designed by renowned architect Glenn Murcutt. While the family loved the design, the kitchen was starting to feel a little dated. The aim was to maintain that original charm but add a more refreshed feel. The main considerations were updating the older appliances and creating a sleeker look with the cabinetry in particular, given all the joinery had visible handles. The colour scheme worked with the homeowners’ tastes, but overall, the space needed a refresh rather than a total overhaul.

To achieve this, the original floor plan was maintained and the iconic curvature of the kitchen island was highlighted with the vertical panelling. Sandy beige tones in the timber complement the beautiful views from the kitchen and the white and grey dappled benchtops by Austaron add a classic freshness.

The cabinetry was the biggest transformation, with Blum hinges and drawers adding a sleeker look without the obvious original handles. All the appliances were cleverly hidden or stored away to allow the texture and sculptural elements in the design to be the standout features. The kitchen now has a lighter, airier and more modern feel that’s fitting with the rest of the home, all while maintaining the key features the architect had originally envisioned for it.

The home in which you’ll find this kitchen was designed to exude a modern coastal elegance, so extending this theme right through to the kitchen was a logical step.

The design team achieved modern coastal elegance through carefully curated fittings, fixtures and features — including the show-stopping feature splashback created using Rosa Portogallo penny rounds with Mapei Silver Grey grout sourced from GT&B. The Everwood European Oak Organic flooring, also supplied by GT&B, was used throughout the home to create a sense of calming flow and integrated into the kitchen’s design as well.

Geelong Tiles and Bathware

The homeowners wanted a wow-factor kitchen, so the design team chose coloured accents that work in harmony with brushed-brass tapware to achieve this. Though this oversized kitchen is undeniably aesthetically pleasing, it’s equally as functional. There’s plenty of storage for pots, pans and small appliances. Off to one side is a large open shelving pantry, which hosts the fridge and a double stack of ovens. The cooktop and sink were placed on the back bench, leaving the expansive island clear and clutter-free. This ensures the island can be used for
sitting around for canapes and conversations with friends or family when the homeowners entertain.

Modern Coastal Elegance GTandB

Though the kitchen is spacious, it’s also homely and completely connected to the adjoining living areas. It achieves the difficult task of being perfect for both preparing a meal for 20 guests
and cooking a simple meal for two.

A Coastal Home that can Accommodate a Large Extended Family https://www.completehome.com.au/new-homes/award-winning-homes/a-coastal-home-that-can-accomodate-a-large-extended-family.html Tue, 24 Jan 2023 00:06:49 +0000 https://www.completehome.com.au/?p=72109 This coastal home offers a flexible space that is able to accommodate a large extended family and also functions as a residence for an individual or couple.

This coastal home offers a flexible space that is able to accommodate a large extended family and also functions as a residence for an individual or couple.

It has open plan, zoned indoor spaces, and multi-purpose outdoor spaces including an inground pool that can cater to large gatherings. The garden is a fun and challenging space for children and contains extensive local vegetation.

Outdoor-Decking-&-Pool Pool

This spacious contemporary house responds to its coastal location through its forms and materials. The muted colour of the concrete walls and the warm tone of the timber cladding blend with the surrounding landscape and vegetation. The sloping roof reflects the traditional beach houses in the surrounding area and incorporates celestial windows which provide ample natural light. The stunning kitchen, dining and living areas are the heart of the home. The kitchen features stone waterfall benchtops, custom cabinetry and integrated appliances.

The client brief was for a single-level residence that could comfortably accommodate a multi-generational family, that was easily accessible for all ages, and that was durable and low maintenance.

The large central living area allows the extended family to spend time together, whilst zoned areas such as the study and playroom ensure privacy and space. Each bedroom is serviced by an ensuite. The children have a custom-built bunkroom and a separate playroom. The home is entered via a custom-built timber ramp to ensure maximum accessibility. Polished concrete slab flooring throughout the property provides low-maintenance living.

The site slopes by 2 metres from the back to the front. The floor level of the house was designed to be level with the back garden, which provided the opportunity for a large semi-basement that contains a 4-car garage, cellar, laundry, plant-room and storage for surfboards to accommodate the coastal lifestyle.

The east and west walls are precast concrete panels formed with timber planks, which creates a unique wood-textured pattern on the concrete. The south wall and pool pavilion are clad in local radial-sawn stringybark timber. The pool pavilion is positioned at the rear of the property to ensure privacy and features a custom day-bed built into the timber wall.

The building footprint needed to be compact because the local planning scheme has stringent setbacks and site coverage limits, so the floor plan needed to be spatially efficient.

Additional-Kitchen Bathroom-with-a-view

The main living areas and garden are strategically placed on the north side of the house, providing ample natural light without the heat of late afternoon sun. The landscape design uses local plants such as the Moonah trees that are abundant on this part of the Victorian coastline. The property has a hydronic Stiebel hot water system and hydronic heating. Water tanks are used to collect rainwater. The polished concrete slabs throughout the property create great thermal mass.
