There’s something innately welcoming about a modern country kitchen, and this masterpiece by Catherine Sedgewick of Smith & Smith Kitchens is testament to that.

Visitors are immediately drawn to the natural warmth of the island unit, with its solid blackwood benchtop and two-pack Shaker-style cabinetry in Dulux Classic Calm. It has clearly been designed as a gathering point for friends and family, and textured rattan stools help to emphasise this point.

Contrasting Lithostone countertops in Carrara Grey and Shaker-style cabinetry in Dulux Whisper White subtly define the surrounding work zones, which feature an array of classic country inclusions. Among them is a custom-made half-mantle over a freestanding Falcon stove. A ceramic farmhouse sink with Phoenix Nostalgia mixer and pressed-metal-effect tiles further add to this aesthetic, while stainless-steel appliances and low-key downlighting introduce a crisp modern edge.

The obvious charm of this modern country kitchen is surpassed only by the ingenuity of its storage. Almost unnoticed across the passageway, an appliance cupboard with easy-close bifold doors is tucked into an entire wall of cabinetry, allowing for a quick tidy-up when guests pop over. A pull-out rack by the oven keeps oils and seasonings within easy reach and multiple drawers in the island help keep the benchtop clutter-free.

The owners wanted a place for everything and this kitchen design meets that brief in the most inviting way.

“The aim was to create a fresh, clean, contemporary kitchen with a subtly nuanced nod to the country aesthetic, in order to blend with the clients’ furnishings and generate the kind of welcoming appeal all good kitchens should radiate. A light, neutral colour scheme, combined with long graceful lines, culminates in an ostensibly modern canvas upon which more detailed touches, such as the routed drawers and cabinetry adorned by ornate handles with porcelain detailing, can work their provincial magic.

“The bank of glass-paned cabinets really ups the country charm, while also allowing the clients to reveal their own style with selected kitchenware on display. Internal drawers make for super-easy access to all areas of the cabinetry, coupled with Kesseböhmer corner units for optimal functionality. The result is a design that beautifully marries modern style with a little bit of country in a practical family space.”

Bringing the warmth and elegance of a French provincial lifestyle to the home, this design is a timeless beauty

With only minimal space available and a large family to cater for, the layout of this kitchen cleverly maximises every square centimetre. The neutral palette used helps create an uncluttered and seamless look, while the glossy Caesarstone benchtop subtly reflects light throughout the space.

The open-plan layout encourages movement, while the soft shades of white and grey complement the light hardwood floors, making the room feel open, casual and spacious. The originality is in the details, however, with copper pendant lights, timber accents and a vintage-style Smeg oven exuding a sense of warmth and charm.

While aesthetically pleasing, this space had to be practical as well as stylish. A hidden scullery runs parallel to the kitchen and is home to an abundance of storage and everything a busy family needs first thing in the morning. This viable add-on removes any signs of disarray from the main room, leaving the kitchen as a prime entertaining area.

This new kitchen combines traditional elements with simple modern design principles

“Updated from an older, country-style kitchen with separate dining, this neutral modern hub is a great example of how to incorporate distinct yet connected zones for storage, preparation and cooking. The original English and American Shaker aesthetic has been maintained to encourage cohesion throughout the home, but modern industrial touches and beautiful big windows bring the outdoors in and add colour to this neutral space. Storage is amply provided for, with corner cabinets and counter level doors a perfect place to stow pots, pans and your favourite appliances. A dishwasher and prep sink in the dining room allows for easy socialising with guests while you set up and clean up, while a breakfast bar at the island bench makes a great option for casual meals.”

Expert tip: A similar colour palette and fixtures, differentiated by complementary textures, create a cohesive design scheme throughout multiple rooms
