Want to infuse style and personality into your space? Here are five ways to achieve that with wall art, rugs, mirrors, vases, and décor.

1. Select Your Wall Art Thoughtfully

Adding wall art to your home is an excellent way to introduce color, texture, and showcase your unique personality. Whether you’re drawn to abstract prints, botanical illustrations, or vintage posters, art can transform empty walls into a striking focal point in any room.

Oz Design

When selecting your piece, think about whether a canvas or glass print best suits your style. Canvas prints bring a textured, rustic charm, while glass prints offer a sleek, modern feel. It’s also crucial to consider the size and design. The artwork should be proportionate to the wall it occupies, and the design should complement the room’s overall aesthetic for a cohesive look.

2. Set the Tone with Stylish Flooring

Rugs are a key element in any home, adding warmth, comfort, and style to a room. Whether you choose a rug that complements your existing color palette or opt for one as a bold statement piece, it can effortlessly anchor the space.

Oz Design

During winter, a wool rug is an excellent choice, offering both warmth and insulation to create a cosy, inviting atmosphere. In contrast, summer calls for a jute rug—lightweight, breathable, and perfect for a relaxed, laid-back vibe. Jute rugs add an effortless charm, making them ideal for warm-weather months.

Rugs are also perfect for defining different zones in open-plan spaces, such as separating the living area from the dining room, and enhancing the overall flow of your home.

3. Create moments of reflection

Mirrors are not just functional—they can also brighten and visually expand a room. Position a mirror opposite a window to reflect natural light or use a large mirror as a striking focal point above a buffet or console table.

Oz Design

In smaller spaces, mirrors work wonders by creating the illusion of more room. They’re perfect for tight hallways or entryways, making these areas feel brighter, airier, and more spacious. Whether you opt for a bold, thick statement frame or prefer a sleek, minimal no-frame design, mirrors can elevate the overall aesthetic of your space.

4. Incorporate Greenery and Florals

Vases are a versatile décor piece, perfect for showcasing fresh or dried flowers, branches, or even standing alone as striking decorative accents. Select vases in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials to add visual interest, bringing a touch of nature indoors with lush greenery.

Oz Design

For shelves, bookcases, or buffets, group vases of varying heights to create depth and a harmonious balance. On dining or coffee tables, however, a single vase can serve as an elegant focal point, making for a refined centerpiece that elevates the space.

5. Layer up!

Beyond the main furniture pieces, decorative accents are key to fully completing a room. Don’t forget the finishing touches— throw pillows, candles, baskets, and lamps. These small details help tie the room together while reflecting your personal style. Mix and match textures, patterns, and colors to create a layered, inviting atmosphere.

Oz Design

These versatile accents can be easily swapped out seasonally, giving your home a refreshed look. Since they’re more affordable than larger furniture pieces, they’re a cost-effective way to update your décor throughout the year.

Make your house feel like a home and discover furniture and homewares collections that will live with you through every moment. OZ Design. For Life.

Backdropped by tactile timber and luminous limestone that create a warmth beloved by its owners, this kitchen is the beating heart of a Victorian holiday home on the picturesque Mornington Peninsula.

Generous use of timber and stone extends beyond the kitchen to infiltrate the entire home, offering the abode a link to the landscape outside its well-designed walls.

More than just a pretty face, the kitchen is extremely functional and easy to navigate. Endowed with top-notch appliances, it features a butler’s pantry partly concealed behind the cooking zone, which boasts a state-of-the-art Lacanche Savigny oven and cooktop and a Pietra Nautica limestone upstand to match the benchtop. Earthy-hued square tiling continues above the upstand to make cleaning a breeze and enhance the warm, natural nature of the space.

Attention to detail is a defining feature throughout the kitchen and butler’s pantry. Case in point: the extra-height cabinetry that maintains grain matching for a refined finish. As well as providing more than enough storage space for appliances and dinnerware, the American oak cabinetry offers a visual and textural point of difference to the surrounding stone. Let’s Talk Kitchens & Interiors is the Victorian firm responsible for the kitchen’s latest incarnation.

Established in 1972, Let’s Talk Kitchens & Interiors is an interior design business specialising in the design of domestic interior renovations and the construction and project management of these types of works through to completion. Prior to the company’s intervention, the original small stone house was equipped with a simple kitchen set-up. The new owners purchased it with the intention of fully renovating and extending it, and the holiday home now comprises six bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms and incorporates a fully self-contained guest wing.

The owners wanted the dwelling for entertaining their large family and gaggle of friends, and presented a brief that called for a solution that was contemporary stylistically, but with a nod to the past and a link to the natural world. Looking to create a relaxing escape from everyday life, the owners are able to take a break inside a home that is exceptionally welcoming thanks to the warm colour and material palettes. Emphasising this connection to the natural world is the combination of rammed-earth external walls, stone floors, timber-lined ceilings and polished plaster walls.

Extensive use of natural materials links this kitchen to the environment and imbues the home with a beautiful sense of tranquillity, making it a bona fide Mornington Peninsula masterpiece.

As the hustle and bustle of life picks back up again, keep your home feeling fresh and relaxed this summer by following these simple tricks to create resort living, at home.

The easiest way to add a relaxing vibe to any room is to use elements that reflect your favourite holiday destination. Want to be transported to a tropical paradise? Include large doors to extend open living, bringing the outside inside and creating cross ventilation. Add big leafy palms and consider using a dark colour palette when it comes to furniture and finishes.

If a luxe island escape is what you are after, set the tone for the whole home by choosing a palette of natural materials, matte white colours and brass accents.

For feelings of grandeur, adding wooden paneling to ceilings and emphasising floor ceiling height with drop down pendants and ceiling fans will evoke a grandeur resort seen in the likes of Fiji or the Whitsunday Islands.

Coloured Concrete: How to Choose the Perfect Hue https://www.completehome.com.au/interiors/coloured-concrete-how-to-choose-the-perfect-hue.html Fri, 17 Jun 2022 04:20:44 +0000 https://www.completehome.com.au/?p=68641 It is a common assumption that concrete is grey, cold and unsuitable for residential design. This could not be further from the truth!

]]>
It is a common assumption that concrete is grey, cold and unsuitable for residential design. This could not be further from the truth!

The various colours and textures of concrete allow for the creation of truly unique concrete pieces and spaces. The real challenge lies in choosing the right colour to suit your space. Whether you’re renovating or completing a new build, we have a few tips to help you make the best choice.

At Blend Concrete Design, we have a range of 13 unique and beautiful concrete colours. To create these hues, we add a percentage of coloured oxide to the concrete mix. We can also create custom colours by varying the amount of coloured oxide in the mix. Whether you’re wanting your concrete piece to blend into an existing colour scheme or bring a pop of colour, Blend can create the perfect hue.

It can be challenging to decide the perfect colour for your space, so we’re put together a few factors to consider when making this difficult decision.

Colour Scheme

We recommend being selective with the number of colours you choose to incorporate into a space. Too many colours can make the final space appear busy and overwhelming. No variation in colour, on the other hand, can make the space stark. Considering the number of colours in your colour scheme will help you decide if you’d like your concrete to fit into the existing colour palette or a add new splash of colour to the space.

Colour is a fantastic tool for evoking emotion and creating a feeling within a space. When choosing a concrete colour, it is important to consider the feeling you are trying to create. Are you looking to create a harmonious space featuring neutral, complementary colours? Or would you prefer your concrete to be a bold feature colour that brings high energy and contrast to a space?

Space and Lighting

The space and lighting in an area can be used to inform your concrete colour choice. Lighter coloured concrete can be used to make a space look larger or more open. White and off-white concrete hues are very popular for this reason. We recommend against using dark colours in small low light spaces. When a space is poorly light, incorporating dark concrete can make it feel even darker and smaller.

The hue of your light bulbs may also influence your colour decision. Concrete colours with warm undertones complement warm lighting. Whilst concrete colours with cool undertones are better suited to cool lighting.

The cool coloured lighting featured in this bathroom, works cohesively with the cool undertones in the concrete vanity top.

colour and finish of your fixtures and fittings

Fixtures and Fittings

The material, colour and finish of your fixtures and fittings can impact your overall colour decisions. Whether you’re trying to complement or contrast the colour of your fixtures, it can be useful to consider how your concrete and fixtures will pair together.

It is on trend to pair peachy and blush tones with brass or copper fittings. The warm tones in brass and copper work to complement the pink tones of the concrete. At Blend we love pairing our Galah and Dingo colours with brass and copper fittings.

Featured in the below bathroom, is our Eclipse basin in a custom shade Galah paired with polished copper tapware. Our online store features our four beautiful basin designs, each available in 13 different colours.

pair peachy and blush tones with brass or copper fittings

Monochromatic colour schemes are popular as they have a timeless feel. Many of our clients pair our grey concrete with matte black fixtures for a chic and clean finish. At Blend, we offer a variety of greys which are perfect for monochromatic application:

  • Cool greys
    • Koala Grey
    • Stingray Grey
    • Storm Grey
  • Warn greys
    • Mist Grey
    • Bilby Grey
    • Granite Grey

The below outdoor BBQ area shows our chic koala grey BBQ and integrated bench seat paired with matte black appliances, fixtures, and fittings. This space has a clean and polished look perfect for entertaining.

Take Inspiration from your surroundings

If your still stuck on what concrete colour to choose, you might want to take inspiration from the environment around you. Off-white or blue tones are popular for coastal spaces wanting to embrace a beachside aesthetic. Whilst green tones work for outdoor spaces rich with plants and greenery.

This stunning outdoor concrete dining table, bench and stool set in our colour Rainforest Green, captures how beautifully our concrete complements the natural greenery. The tones in the concrete pair beautifully with the with the rich colours in the plants, whilst contrasting the neutral crazy paving.

From natural colour palettes to stone archways, here are the top 10 design trends Big Ass Fans have spotted in Grand Designs Australia Magazine.

The best colour palette has always been at our doorstep and it’s time to start taking cues from nature. Think natural colours, shades of greens from sage to forest borrowed from outside trees to allow for seamless indoor outdoor flow and lifestyle to match.

If natural is not sophisticated enough – navy hues, dark timbers and brass accents have shaped ‘riverside living’, a new take on ‘coastal living’ whilst still keeping relaxation front of mind.

This will come at no surprise, but Nordic design is here to stay with its captivating minimal lines, striking patterns, and natural timber. Whilst a constant in design, curved shapes are up and coming in Nordic, minimal architecture.

captivating minimal lines, striking patterns, and natural timber

The arches, stonework and whitewashed walls of Spanish influenced Californian Architecture is captivating the outdoor environment. Consider a central fire pit, light materials and decor, or gravel garden beds with cacti and palms reinforcing a desert theme.

If there is one thing that comes from Grand Designs is that Bigger is not better. Bigger spaces are not sustainable long term as they are dysfunctional spaces. Multiple rooms each with one sole purpose is wasteful. Mindful buildings and purposeful spaces are now incorporated into a buildings design. Gone are the days of extravagant, glitz and glamour spaces!

Make the natural light a feature! Floor to ceiling windows to let light leak or including a void in the stairwell will draw attention to the natural light as it filters through the entire home.

Pay attention to the finer details when it comes to your home. The skirting chosen, tapware and panel are just as important as the marble kitchen bench top.

natural light a feature

Sustainable design in the use of local context and climate. Ceiling fans are a key design feature to these types of homes, increasing comfort by introducing air movement. Big Ass Fans use a very small amount of electricity over traditional fans and save you money in the long run. Conventional fans start at 90 Watts, Big Ass Fans start at 2 watts and go up to 30 watts. Utilising the local climate and ceiling fans to maximise comfort while minimising energy use puts homeowners back in touch with the environment in which they occupy and encourages ventilation, all which provide a happier, healthier and more environmentally responsible home.

Design a home not just for aesthetics, but your health and wellbeing. Research shows the presence of wood can lower blood pressure, heart rate, increase productivity and positively impact our emotions and mood. Natural, insulating and warm, the innate attraction to nature, in particular timber, is a key to our aesthetic, intellectual cognitive and even spiritual satisfaction.

crisp white palette

Let there be White. Consider the crisp white palette layered with modern metallic fittings. By using the white-on-white aesthetic and displaying different textures, you can breathe fresh new life into your home. To elevate a coastal summer house, the Haiku Driftwood is a matt white finish that adds dimension and texture to a space, while being a fresh white for the home.

This inspiring artist has discovered that, through the melody of life, they are now playing her song.

For as far back as she can remember, Laura Oczos always wanted to be an artist. Life, however, took her in another direction. After studying Fine Arts at university and holding a few exhibitions, she began teaching Special Education and was drawn to the stability of a life that offered a regular income and financed the travelling she enjoyed.

left Bank Art Group

After a 14-year hiatus from painting, Laura was at a low point in her life and found herself painting again. “I was a solo parent on maternity leave and started painting as a cathartic outlet,” she says. From then on she decided that art was indeed her calling. Picking up a paint brush was for her like coming home. “I realised how much I missed it and how happy it made me,” she reflects.

Laura describes her style as abstract expressionism. Her preferred mediums are acrylic, ink and aerosol paint. This talented artist’s work is constantly evolving. These days it incorporates a more augmented sense of flow and she has pared down the decorative elements. Her latest works have a more limited colour palette, with more glazing and acrylic washes. “It’s taken a few years to settle on a style I’m happy with, but I’m finally there now with my new body of work and I’m getting ready to launch,” she says.

Left Bank Art Group

Laura’s work is autobiographical in nature; a symphony of remembrances is played out on the canvas, with each work a time or event from her life. “Ultimately, my paintings are maps or visual timestamps that I see as proof I existed, so I’m very inspired by cartography or any kind of data mapping and aerial photography,” she muses.

Laura’s expressive approach to life and art dictates her taste in furnishings. She believes furniture must be comfortable first and foremost, but she loves statement pieces or anything that has a history. “I prefer moodier, dirty colours and am drawn to clashing or unexpected colour combinations. I tend to like anything that looks a bit ugly,” she explains.

Stunning Interior Artwork

As she embraces the next chapter of her story, Laura wants to keep growing and developing as an artist. “If I could be in my studio every day, I’d be very happy. I don’t need much more than that.”

Geometric patterns are absolutely key in interior design. Used in the right places they are a short cut to creating a room that meets the perfect requirements of good styling: incorporating pattern, scale and timeless design.

Below: Frecuency by Tres Tintas

The perfect wallpaper choice for this luxury bathroom, the shapes of the interlocking oval rings mirror the shape of the bathtub taking centre stage. The lines are composed of soft tones that fade, flooding the pattern with light and dynamism.

Below: Kalamkari by Mind the Gap

Geometrics aren’t neccessarily about hard lines and angles. This mellow design is inspired by the art of Kalamkari block printing, as found in Persia and India. It is a simple floral pattern with softly rounded shapes and a subtle colour palette that emulates the effect of natural dyes. It works beautifully here to soften an otherwise overtly masculine setting.

Known for his bold use of colour, eclecticism, and geometric designs, David Hicks is acknowledged as one of the most exciting and innovative British interior designers of the late twentieth century.

An original David Hicks design, this versatile geometric print creates a striking graphic backdrop, here perfectly paired with dark woodwork and a reflective metallic lampbase.

Are you ready for the design trend that is the antithesis of Minimalism? It’s Maximalism, or “more is more” design, and it’s either going to enthuse all or your senses…. or be a bit too much to handle.

The regularity of the design framework on this geometrically placed pattern wallpaper brings a sense of organisation to this maximalist interior. In other words, it isn’t total chaos.

This wallpaper is incredibly calming and perfectly suits the simple and curated styling of the room. The arrangement of boxes repeated over and over means the eye does not need to worry about what comes next – this is what is often so relaxing about geometric design.

The paintwork has been kept consistent across the door and cabinetry, perfectly complementing the tones in the wallpaper and adding to the serenity of the space.

Cedar House has a striking modern design, which is clearly evident from the street.

With a unique street presence of a recessed entry door unit, cleverly designed with privacy glazing, organic dry-stone walling and soft white walls, the building reads like a feature of the landscape.

Family-Living-Area-with-Fireplace-and-Backyard Monochrome-kitchen-with-view-of-Pool

The clients’ design brief was to take maximum advantage of the wide block and create a clean, contemporary home to suit their busy, evolving lifestyle — and to provide a sanctum in which the young family can grow and thrive.

Upon entry, the home reveals a light-filled gallery — an oversized void area with six metres of architectural glazing and a central staircase boasting spotted gum open treads and a steel mono-string spine. The internal courtyard was designed as an architectural feature and floods the double-height living area with light during the day.

Views-of-Floating-Staircase

To address the slope of the block, the design has two subtle level changes, with a third up to the master suite, bedrooms and retreat. Staying true to the overarching design concept, a simple yet robust materials palette, taking cues from Nordic design, features light timbers, natural concrete tones and an abundance of glazing.

The kitchen is a design showpiece. Here you will see contrasting finishes, reflective surfaces and integrated passageways which cleverly lead to the working areas of the home. One of the most valued inclusions of this build is a spacious mudroom with a wall dedicated to custom joinery and clever storage.

Successfully achieving a strong sense of style throughout a home requires thoughtfulness and balance. Gremmo Homes has achieved this in all spaces by cleverly combining modern finishes with touches of warmth and softness.

With winter quickly approaching, there are many changes to your nursery you can make to ensure they stay warm and are still in a space that incites love and imagination. The Haiku L by Big Ass Fans is a great addition to this space due its engineered silence so as not to disturb any dreamers in the room, whilst keeping air moving for comfort.

8. The Simple Things in Life

Rugs are a great option

Sometimes a reno isn’t a major overhaul, but rather, a simple addition to an existing space. Rugs are a great option if you have tiled or wooden floor boards as they take up no practical space whilst being able to tie colours of the room together. With winter coming in, rugs are a much more comfortable alternative to your existing floor.

9. Colour Matching for the Perfect Result

Colours in matching pairs are a strong way to define your next renovation

Colours in matching pairs are a strong way to define your next renovation. Warm brown and soft shades of white for instance are an aesthetically pleasing combination while providing you with clear artistic direction and offering a good variety of installation options. The use of wood is perfect during winter due to it’s greater thermal mass as it allows greater heat retention and keep temperature from fluctuating too quickly.

10. Sprucing up your Living Space

When you’re at the stage you want to start sprucing up your living space, there are a few creative ways to make it feel more enticing. Matching an art piece with some subtle additions to the space can really light up a room and give it that extra design detail. This can be an affordable and fun way to make a room feel more intentional and artsy without going over the top.

11. A Space for Gathering

With social distancing a thing of the past, your next renovation should consider creating a space of gathering! Setting up a coffee table with chairs and a couch or two near it makes for a great use of space and looks just as welcoming.

12. It’s Found in the Texture

IT'S ALL ABOUT TEXTURE

For your next renovation, it is time to bring back the feature wall. But gone are the days of using printed wallpaper. Instead consider texture and natural materials like brick or wooden panels. This will provide depth and dimension to your space on a small scale.
