KBDI Awards Kerrie Neale: BBOT Designs

A retired couple who had raised a large family wanted their new kitchen to honour their past and embrace their future. The outer-suburban property was subdivided, so the design response carefully balanced form, function and an aesthetic reference to the history of the site and its connection to the family. Echoing the leafy surroundings, natural materials – primarily wood, ceramic and stone – were selected.

marble counter top with wooden kitchen

Timbers were placed on the ceiling and cabinetry, with stone and tile chosen for the splashback and benchtop. Cool naturalistic tones in green and blue were placed centrally on the splashback and picked up in the benchtop and floor particulate. Counterbalancing the cool tones, warm walnut panelling was introduced for the cabinetry and ceiling – this served a dual function by creating a canopy, nestling the kitchen beneath. The cabinetry door detailing, statement concrete floor and doublesided bookshelf lend a retro feel to the kitchen, with modern-style tapware, appliances and lighting balancing the look.

Blue and aqua coloured splashback and counter

The space was laid out for ease of use, flowing through cooking, cleaning and preparatory zones. Ergonomic principles are reflected in the stacked ovens and storage and complemented by an expansive island bench that the entire family can fit around. The finished result is an inviting, modern yet classic kitchen which is just as suited to preparing a meal, gathering the family together or throwing a party and celebrating in style.

This project was nominated for the KBDI Design Awards 2024 in the Kitchen Plus Vic category. The KBDI Design Awards program is a well-established and highly regarded event held annually to showcase Australia’s top kitchen and bathroom designers.

Introducing Alan Schull, the man behind Kitchen Shop QLD on the Sunshine Coast.

Alan began as a cabinetmaker after leaving school and has since clocked up a milestone of 50 years within the industry. Following in his footsteps, Alan’s son also has many years of experience as a cabinetmaker and designer.

Established in 2000, the family business ethics. Many of its customers in the early days were taken aback by the company’s swift response times and its ability to listen to and effectively meet a brief – all of which hasn’t changed in 24 years. This quality service and consistency throughout the years can be attributed to Kitchen Shop QLD’s wonderful reputation, along with its growing accolades and client base.

“Receiving honest advice, backed by experience and knowledge for every question asked, was and still is – the most relieving part of any client’s quest for the right company to carry out works within their home,” explains Alan.

Kitchen Shop QLD has built an amazing partnership with a select group of trade contractors who help to create and complete full kitchen and bathroom renovations in the most friendly, efficient and professional manner. When asked about current trends and styles, Alan say Shaker cabinets and Hamptons style are still the most popular, as well as requests for handleless designs. When it comes to benchtops, the new crystalline silica-free stone-look tops will soon become the norm, although natural stone such as granite and quartzite have been a longtime favourite of Alan’s.

Kitchen Shop QLD’s ethos is to keep things simple – to do the best they can and keep their clients informed and satisfied with the process from start to end.

In this 1970s apartment, the kitchen was compact, making efficient use of space crucial.

Storage on the wall wood accents

A dishwasher 450mm in width was selected to fit the limited space, and with a single undermount sink installed, there remained sufficient bench space for other appliances. The client opted for a Bora downdraft rangehood/cooktop to avoid overhead cabinets, preserving the kitchen’s open feel and emphasizing the custom solid timber oak plate rack.

NICOLE WALTON | Renovation Capital

A Polytec Steccawood feature panel in Prime Oak was installed beside the fridge cabinet, matching the finger grip rails and tray dividers above the fridge. For the rest of the cabinetry, Polytec Topiary in a smooth finish was chosen. The splashback features a classic glosswhite subway tile with a handmade edge to add texture.

Kitchen cabinet and oven

Task lighting is provided by a streamlined wall light that accentuates the tile’s texture, complemented by LED strip lighting under the floating shelf.

Transforming an apartment’s small, one window kitchen with minimal cabinetry and little space into a bespoke solution for a forever home was the mission.

ANDREA VAUGHAN | Designs By Andrea

With functionality and practicality at the forefront, floor-to-ceiling cabinetry was fitted to allow for maximum storage and to better utilise space. The generously sized pantry storage compartments house the integrated refrigerator and an appliance garage with pocket doors for a bespoke finish. Curved features were incorporated as well as under lighting in the island to add a softer touch to the space.

Wooden and marble themed kitchen

Polytec Florentine Walnut joinery was used in conjunction with the Steccawood as a feature for the island, rangehood and custom under-window bench. Silestone Blanco Norte was selected for the stone benchtops, and a statement Abey Artisan Copper-finish tap matches the pendant light. Removing the room’s outdated arches helped to create a more open lifestyle and contemporary space. The left arch was then redesigned by extending the curve up to the ceiling, creating an effect that adds a unique architectural touch.

Wooden themed Kitchen with Oven and Island

By opening up the walls and using elements that brightened the space and flowed into the apartment’s lifestyle area, the kitchen is warm and inviting, with an airy atmosphere which emanates throughout the home.

Bathrooms have come a long way from a room of necessity that made its way from the out-house to the in-house.

A lot of thought is given to a designer bathroom project for consideration of colours, textures, fixtures, fittings, lighting, layout, storage, ventilation, and surfaces.

Although often one of the smaller rooms in many homes, the bathroom caters to a lot of activity. No longer just a room to pop in and out, there is lots of time spent hanging out in the bathroom. Selecting the right surfaces can make all the difference to time spent cleaning and pampering yourself there or cleaning your bathroom.

Staron Solid Surface is the ultimate performer in these wet spaces. Unaffected by water damage and with the ability to be joined seamlessly, eliminating the need for silicon, results in a very easy to clean and maintain bathroom.

The ability to customise Staron Solid Surface gives greater design flexibility within the bathroom. Don’t just think benchtops; other applications available are custom vanities, or integrated Staron basins into the Staron benchtop for one continuous seam-free vanity unit. Bathtub surrounds and seating that can flow into the shower as well as shelves, and for more, wow, you can curve it!

Consider Staron Solid Surface instead of tiles for wall panelling; select a design from our Mario Romano Walls range that can be caved and customised to suite your application. Additionally, Staron is a great option for various flooring, step-ups, and shower trays. Door and drawer fronts can be manufactured, even towel rails.

With so many applications all available in one product, there is something for everyone’s project.

It is a common belief that ‘contemporary design’ and ‘modern design’ are the same. This is not the case. Modern design refers to a period of time, from the 1920s to 1950s, which is also known as the defined style of ‘mid-century modern.’

While many people would be familiar with the Arne Jacobsen’s Egg chair and the Eames lounge chair, the mid-century modern movement embraced functionality, which included clean lines, organic shapes, timber, steel, white walls and bare floors.

Contemporary kitchen design refers to what is popular or used often at present. At The Kitchen House we believe that contemporary design can be eclectic, using styles and pieces from all diverse periods in time. With over 30 years’ experience, The Kitchen House can create a unique and functional kitchen design using the style you would like for your home.

Kitchen form is incredibly important to any design, as is its function. Storage is one of the most important elements of the kitchen and can determine how the homeowner will use the space. The Kitchen House incorporates unique storage ideas into their designs, such as Blum corner drawers or kickboard drawers, to maximise the storage potential in a kitchen.
