CorTen steel beauties make outdoor entertaining perfect year-round

The Scandinavians have a wonderful saying: “No terrace without a fire…” And they are, of course, completely right.

The story of RB73 is one of passion, not only for fire but also beautiful and timeless products. Handmade by professionals with a genuine love for their work, these fireplaces mean you can enjoy warm evenings through summer and the rest of the year, making the most of that wonderful extra warmth and atmosphere on your terrace.

The fireplaces all have glass fronted doors so those gather around don’t suffer from smoke, ash or damaging sparks on the terrace. Their CorTen steel gives the fires a solid appearance and long life. The rusting process is different for each fireplace and therefore every fireplace is unique. Made by Dutch family business Reny — based in Duizel in the Netherlands — the product is completely designed, developed and produced in-house. This team of professionals with a passion for wood-burning stoves has the most modern systems and machines at its disposal for this very purpose, guaranteeing quality, commitment and service.

The Piquia model is a compact CorTen steel wood stove with an industrial look. This terrace stove has a galvanised steel door handle and stainless steel lock bolts both above and below the door, which contrast well with the warm rustic plate material. To keep things neat, at the rear is a small ash tray. Then there’s the Quaruba. Available in three different sizes, it’s a stylish and elegant stove that sits 85cm high (the smallest option) with square glass offering direct visuals to the enchanting flames. This cube shaped terrace stove has a unique modular construction, with the option to assemble as desired with anything from one glass-fronted door to four glass panels. A four-wheel version is super easy to manoeuvre into place, and the platform for the wheels can also be used as storage for firewood. Model X, the middle of the three Quaruba sizes, has a height of 95 cm, ensuring beautiful elongated glass panelling for a great view of the fire, while model XXL, the largest of the bunch, is a real eye catcher on the terrace with his height of 105cm and tall glass panels providing even better flame views.

The Bijuga is another robust CorTen steel outdoor stove. Its striking timeless design combines tight lines and surfaces with industrial accents. The sheet material is folded out on the connecting seams, with all bolts and nuts visible. Hardwood merbau parts (knobs and push-bar) not only provide beautiful design details but are also practical for operation as they don’t get too hot.

Again, the two-wheel version with a push-bar on the rear is easily moved, and the emblem on the hood is a symbol for the collaboration with Atelier Rene Knip, the designer of this stove. Rene’s work has a distinct design, characterised by balanced proportions, aesthetic beauty and high quality materials.

Wood storage ‘Bruges’ — storage made from CorTen steel — are also available in the range, designed by Belgian designer Jan Kuppers of Kuppers & Wuytens. The shape is inspired by the typical Belgian façade construction. Provided in flatpack form (the parts are easy to assemble), the little houses themselves being surprisingly stable. The resulting natural beauty of stacked wood combined with naturally rusted steel alongside the green outdoor environment ensures the wood storage serves more than just a functional role.

Together this beautiful range of stylish, durable and well thought-out outdoor furniture can — and should — be given a prominent and visible place in your garden.

A mountain-top home that’s custom to a T

When you’re graced with picturesque views over the Glasshouse Mountains and surrounded by 200 acres, it’s only fair to create a home that rivals such natural beauty. From the outside, this residence may look like a simple cattle farmhouse, but first impressions are often misleading, which is crystal clear when you enter this award-winning lodge created by Mark Gacesa of Ultraspace and Stewart Homes.

Finding a home-meets-hotel in the small town of Wamuran, Queensland, is a pleasant surprise given the grassroots vibe of the area. With two ambitious globetrotters as clients, it was only natural the project was =QUOTE=completely custom from the interior to the exterior design. “The clients often travel abroad and experience many glorious locations,” says interior designer, Mark Gacesa. “They wanted this house to represent not only a culmination of those experiences, but to surpass the feeling of staying at glamorous hotels around the world.”

The agreed aesthetic of the home revolved around fusing earthy elements with rich, opulent pieces. “This house was to be luxuriously organic in nature in both design and finish selections,” says Mark. The exterior of the home is a reflection of its surroundings, with natural rock cladding (aluminium snap extrusion custom powder-coated with an oak grain over black Colorbond sheeting) and universal steel profiles with custom-coloured and folded woodgrain inserts all chosen for their low-maintenance properties. These natural elements are continued inside, with timber featuring heavily throughout and contrasted with textural elements such as fur, velvet and leather.

Deceiving the eye is signature to Ultraspace’s design ethos, and this home is full of clever tricks. In the master suite, a moveable wall appears to be a continuation of the oak battening that extends from the floor to the ceiling in the living space, but once inside the master suite (half a level up), a section of the wall is clad in a mirror that reflects the views of the Glasshouse Mountains. “When opened, two thick doors fold back into recessed pockets to reveal a view into the lavish living space and down to the concealed kitchen,” explains Mark.

Other quirks in this lodge include a rotating marble fireplace, a one-way triple-etched mirror in the master suite and a fully concealed kitchen. “At first glance, the kitchen zone is more like the front counter and reception area of a luxury hotel,” continues Mark. “It blends into its surroundings with the majority of its functionality concealed. A spacious scullery is concealed with two separate entrances and also incorporates a full bar, but the full gourmet entertainer’s experience is accessible in an instant.”

Due to the complex nature of this project, it was clear there would be problems, and Mark admits he could write a book on the subject. “It has been the most challenging and custom project I have ever created,” he says. “Ian Henry and the team from Stewart Homes and I have been the perfect combination, and I could not see this home coming together any other way. With the amount of first-time designing, that is what the client and I needed to acheive this luxury property.”

Securing close to 20 awards, this lodge is a labour of love that’s custom right down to the core. “This project proves to me that with the right team, a positive attitude and a common desire to think and build way outside the box, anything is achievable.”

Smart, innovative gas heater design taken to the next level

The latest in Escea’s gas heater range isn’t just sexy and stylish; it also stands at the forefront of gas heater design.

The Escea FS730 Gas Fireplace was developed in response to popular  demand for a mess-free, efficient alternative to freestanding wood burners that would still maintain the ambience that a flame provides. The result is a state-of-the-art gas heater with cool-touch curved body, contemporary styling and large flame display.

The FS730 is perfect for those lacking the space for an insert gas log fire, an inbuilt fireplace or for those looking to replace a freestanding wood burner. As it does not need a hearth, the fireplace can be placed on any flooring — allowing the ultimate design flexibility.

The FS730 gas fireplace has a heat output of 5.6kW and a 3.8 ENERGY STAR rating and to maximise efficiency, Escea’s Smart Heat Technology monitors the room temperature and adjusts the fireplace automatically. Smart Heat also allows users to control their fire via their smartphone.

Escea offers a free Architectural Advisory service providing information and support — check out their website to learn more.

When looking at gas fires for decorative purposes, there are a number of options available to the consumer, says Jeff Collins, marketing manager of Real Flame

RealFlame_GASFires_EDITED2

Existing homes

“If the home has an existing, working fireplace, installing a decorative burner is simple. A burner can be installed in the fireplace with a chimney plate and cowl fixed to the top of the chimney. If the fire does not draw properly, then a decorative fire can still be installed but a flue system is required to ensure proper and safe operation. If there is not a fireplace in the home, then a simple timber frame can be constructed to suit any of a number of different decorative fires.
“The fire can be chosen to suit the era or decor of the room in which it is to be installed, including styles such as Victorian, Edwardian, art deco, contemporary or modern.”

RealFlame_GASFires_EDITED1

New homes

“In the case of a new home, decorative fires can be installed within a simple frame at the time of construction. There are many options available, as in the case of existing homes. The costs are generally less for new homes, as the required trades are already involved in the general construction.

“The many styles available allow the owner to consider things such as two-sided fires, to break up large open-plan living areas or to enjoy between a living and alfresco area. There are also fires that create a stunning appearance by using natural stone bases with glass backs. Careful planning will result in a stunning centrepiece for the home.”

RealFlame_GASFires_EDITED3

Heating

“For consumers who are looking for a fantastic-looking fire but also need some serious heat, the range of direct-vent glass-fronted heaters also allows for some imaginative design. These fires still have great flame patterns, but will heat large open areas of up to 150m2 efficiently.
“Most boast star ratings in excess of four stars. When looking for heating products, the star ratings are an important factor in selecting your fire.”
