Like a lot of people, our clients initially wondered whether the timing was right to start a project like this.

There are always reasons to wait. Busy schedules, competing priorities, budget considerations, and the simple fact that building something new can feel like a big commitment. We hear these concerns regularly, and they’re completely understandable.

That was the case with this backyard studio project in Caulfield.

When the client first contacted us, they already had a strong vision for the space. They were highly creative, had an exceptional eye for detail, and wanted a studio that felt carefully considered rather than simply added onto the property. From our earliest conversations, it was clear that the quality of the finished result mattered just as much as the additional space itself.

As the design developed, a lot of attention went into the finer details. We spent time refining finishes, proportions, and materials to make sure everything worked together cohesively. Rather than rushing decisions, the client approached each stage thoughtfully, which ultimately helped shape the character of the completed studio.

One thing we particularly enjoyed about this project was seeing how the vision became clearer as construction progressed. What began as plans and drawings gradually turned into a real, functional space that felt completely at home within the property. By the final stages of the build, it was easy to see that the studio wasn’t just adding extra square metres—it was creating a place that would genuinely be used and enjoyed every day.

Looking at the finished project now, it’s hard to imagine this area of the property as it once was. The completed studio feels like a natural extension of the home and provides a bright, comfortable space that can adapt to a variety of uses over time.

Projects like this are a good reminder that the biggest challenge is often simply getting started. Not because every answer is known from the beginning, but because taking that first step allows the entire process to move forward.

For this client, that decision resulted in a studio that reflects their personality, complements their home, and makes far better use of the space available on their property.

Most homeowners assume that adding space to a house means months of disruption, major structural work, and a result that feels separate from the original home.

That wasn’t the direction taken on this project.

During our early conversations, it became clear that preserving the character of the existing home was important to the owners. They wanted a generous new living area that felt contemporary, opened up to the outdoor space, and blended naturally with the house they already loved.

Instead of extending under the existing roof, we designed a prefabricated addition linked to the main house through a glazed connection. It proved to be a surprisingly efficient solution. By preserving much of the original structure, we avoided many of the costs and complexities that often come with conventional extensions.

The challenge was making sure the new addition didn’t overpower the original home. The existing stonework already had plenty of character, so the design needed to complement it rather than compete with it. We ultimately chose dark timber cladding for the new structure, creating a clear distinction between old and new while maintaining a cohesive overall look.

The large glass openings were another important decision. Standing in the completed space, you can look directly across the terrace and pool area, with natural light reaching deep into the interior throughout the day. Even on overcast afternoons, the room feels bright and connected to the outdoors.

Because much of the construction was completed off-site, the installation phase moved far more quickly than many people would expect. Several neighbours stopped to ask how the project seemed to appear almost overnight once work commenced on site.

Today, the extension serves as an additional living and entertaining area, but the flexibility of the layout means it can easily evolve over time. It could become a home office, a guest retreat, accommodation for family members, or simply a quiet place to escape the busier parts of the house.

What stands out now that the project is complete is how naturally the extension sits alongside the original home. Visitors are often surprised to learn it wasn’t part of the original build. For us, that’s usually a good sign. The best additions don’t compete with the existing house—they simply make it work better.
