Hamptons Homes Of Distinction By Garth Chapman Queenslanders

Image 16Australians have taken to the Hamptons with passion and fervour. And why wouldn’t they? Hamptons-style homes share many of the fine attributes and timeless elegance with traditional Australian architecture, such as the iconic Queenslander.

In designing and building our Hamptons display home, the guiding mantra for our team at Garth Chapman Queenslanders was to craft a striking family home. One that faithfully represented an authentic piece of traditional architecture while incorporating modern lifestyle fixtures and fittings.   History has shown our clients understand that this focus will ensure their new home retains its value, won’t date, and will be a place they will be proud to call home. The home is designed to suit a standard block with a 15m frontage.

The wide entry hallway, and beyond, features select grade American Oak timber flooring, stained and polished in a walnut colour. This is genuine 19mm thick timber flooring and not a veneer. How the kitchen interacts with the living spaces of the home and its dynamic function with other rooms – such as the laundry, the garage, and in this case the butler’s pantry – is a key criterion when we custom design a home for our clients. Caesarstone benchtops, 2-pac painted Polytec cabinetry doors and Miele appliances including a double oven, all combine to provide a handsome space that flows beautifully in the home. The butler’s pantry and scullery area provide enormous storage options for a modern family.

Contemporary yet classically styled in design, this chic modern classic Queenslander has given a family of four their dream lifestyle

When they came across this five-acre plot of relatively flat land in the outer-Brisbane suburb of Samford — a plot that offered sensational mountain views — the family that now call this property home recognised its incredible potential. They purchased the land and then set about working with designer Kevin Hincksman of Garth Chapman Queenslanders to create their dream home — a modern classic Queenslander.

Explains Stephen Havas, director of Garth Chapman Queenslanders, “We took the owners’ brief and enhanced it to design a finely detailed, beautifully finished home that is sophisticated yet perfect for the needs of a family of four. Unlike many modern homes, this charming Queenslander doesn’t rely on furnishings to give it a sense of style — the beauty comes from the details of the home itself.”

With its relaxed, Hamptons-influenced styling, the kitchen is the heart of the home. The all-white colour scheme is fresh and inviting and the design is extremely functional — from the large walk-in butler’s-style pantry to the window servery that connects with the rear entertaining verandah and overlooks the swimming pool.

The verandahs that wrap around the residence provide an important link to all the interior rooms they adjoin. This is especially true of the light and airy main living area, which is centred between the front and rear verandahs. “The way in which the exterior and interior spaces are interconnected, making is possible to use the spaces in most weather conditions, is an important design feature and one that is integrated into all Garth Chapman homes,” says Stephen.

Just as importantly, the verandahs, in conjunction with the well-ventilated roof, make the home more comfortable and eco-friendly. “Shading the home from the summer sun and constantly ventilating the roof space means our homes are significantly cooler and more energy-efficient,” explains Stephen. Then there is the aesthetic appeal. “The construction techniques we use are part of the unique Garth Chapman look. Building in the old school way preserves the authentic appearance of the homes,” he adds.

The quality of the interior spaces is second to none. The main living area features a beautiful inbuilt fireplace with a TV above and built-in cabinetry either side. The timber flooring throughout all the living areas and hallways is select-grade Roasted Peat timber boards, which are complemented by white-painted timber joinery that gives the country home a casual coastal feel. The large main bedroom is a parents’ retreat. Separated from the other bedrooms, it boasts a stunning ensuite with timber-framed mirrors, a large walk-in shower and stone benchtops. For the children, there is a dedicated playroom with a built-in seat/toy box.

A pool and pool house were built to the rear of the home so the family can enjoy resort-style outdoor living. The pool house has a kitchenette, bathroom, bedroom, laundry and living space, making it perfect for entertaining or housing visiting relatives and friends. Definitely a dream come true.

Family life in a Queenslander home means embracing the delight of lazy lunches on shady verandahs and finding joy in the unmatched look of rich timbers

It’s a lifestyle that suits thousands of homeowners and, more and more, others are discovering its many benefits. Garth Chapman’s Traditional Queenslanders is indeed providing for a market that is growing like never before. A western Brisbane family, who came from England four years ago, had a wish list of requirements for their new home. They chose Garth Chapman’s The Ascot as the primary design, changing it only to allow for larger bedrooms and a spacious home office.

The Ascot sits splendidly at the front of the family’s bushy two hectares, which stretches far up the hill on a narrow block. Central timber stairs lead up to the higher-than-usual portico with decorative gable frieze. A full-length front verandah wraps around the side of the house to offer masses of outdoor living space. Large bay windows dress up each end of the home, enhancing the grand colonial façade with its paperbark Colorbond roof, white exterior and heritage-green trims.

Warm surian cedar frames the entry door and French doors leading to the front verandah. A wide hallway with select-grade mixed hardwood polished floors and overhead decorative archway gives a genuine, old-fashioned welcome. To the right is the spacious formal dining room leading out to the family room with its traditional, mantelpiece-topped fireplace. Double cedar doors open to reveal ample outdoor living space which overlooks the in-ground pool and tennis court. This area connects to the front verandah via wide wraparound verandahs.

To the left of the hallway, a large home office satisfies the owners’ needs. The long hallway gives access to three bedrooms and the main bathroom with powder nook. An appealing ensuite to the master bedroom features a glass-framed corner shower and a natural, earthy colour scheme. This bedroom also adjoins a balcony, perfect for private relaxation. Decorative bedroom breezeways encourage fresh air circulation and carry on the heritage styling.

Garth Chapman’s Traditional Queenslanders is renowned for inspiring the faithful reproduction of traditional Australian architectural homes with all their stylish attributes. These magnificent homes are distinctive in design and perfect for the Australian climate.

It’s an elegance and style that never wanes: the unmistakable look of an old Queenslander with a warm timber finish, decorative colonial details and sturdy stumps for support

In Brisbane, this type of heritage home enhances the city’s streetscapes. Century-old buildings are lovingly restored by owners aware of their superb aesthetic value and liveability in a sub-tropical climate. But buying an old home is not the only option for seekers of quality workmanship and historic excellence. Garth Chapman’s Traditional Queenslanders provide all of these attributes in a home, with the added benefits of contemporary layouts, classic finishes and significantly reduced ongoing maintenance due to modern materials and construction techniques.

The Georgina by Garth Chapman Queenslanders would fit beautifully on a small frontage close to the city. Instead of spending a fortune on renovating an existing house, with all the time and effort that it entails, homeowners can knock down and rebuild with ease. Alternatively, as the block sizes in new estates diminish, the Georgina, with its old-world charm and fetching façade, would perfectly suit any modern streetscape. The Georgina is one of many eye-catching designs fashioned by Garth Chapman’s Traditional Queenslanders. Angled timber stairs at the front provide access to an L-shaped verandah, which takes full advantage of outdoor family living. Surian cedar-framed French doors, double-hung windows and sliding doors blend perfectly with heritage colours — exhibiting a modern twist — colonial balustrading, decorative corner brackets and window hoods. A small bay window in the master bedroom creates a visual highlight on the façade. Lifted high on steel stumps topped by curved timber skirt battens, the Georgina promotes the classic beauty of a Queenslander home.
Inside this well-crafted abode, mixed-hardwood timber floors team with delicately carved breezeways, colonial arches and dado rails to show off the preference for quality living with a heritage feel.

Families who love large gatherings will find the full-length, covered rotunda at the back to their liking. A servery window in the kitchen makes food distribution a breeze. The corner kitchen, with its vinyl-wrap VJ-profile cabinetry, Smartstone benchtops, walk-in pantry and island bench, is more than adequately equipped to service the spacious family/meals room, study and two bedrooms upstairs. Attractive turned-timber balustrading introduces the steps, which lead downstairs. Overhead is a slender fixed window that throws appealing light onto the passageway down to two more bedrooms, a bathroom, rumpus/media room, a laundry, plentiful storage and two-car accommodation. Underneath the upstairs rotunda and flowing out from the rumpus room is a sandstone-tiled verandah, adding another venue for alfresco living.

With the current focus on sustainable development and energy efficiency in a tropical climate, the Queenslander-style home seems to be an answer that doesn’t require a reinvention of the wheel. The standard features of a Garth Chapman-inspired Queenslander include insulation in all external walls and internal ceilings, wide verandahs, window hoods, eaves, breezeways above bedroom doors, light frame construction, natural ventilation and high ceilings. The Garth Chapman design team will then individually modify the designs to minimise the effects of the summer sun, maximise the benefits of the winter sun and take advantage of any prevailing breezes. These attributes ensure your home will be cool in summer and energy efficient.

Garth Chapman’s Traditional Queenslanders is a multi-award-winning group of individual, authorised builders consistently taking out many Queensland Master Builders’ heritage home awards since its formation in 1988. The company is renowned for inspiring the faithful reproduction of traditional Australian architectural homes with all their stylish attributes. These magnificent homes are distinctive in design and perfect for the Australian climate.

Big in style inclusions but small in price — this classic Queenslander is grabbing headlines for all the right reasons

The latest offering from Garth Chapman Queenslanders is creating quite a buzz in the construction industry. This stylish and contemporary Queenslander has a swag of inclusions, but with a very affordable price tag. Director of Garth Chapman Queenslanders, Stephen Havas, says the home has been built and finished based upon a new standard of inclusions known as their ‘Classic Inclusions’.

“This level of finish provides clients with a more modest entry price point without sacrificing some of the much-loved Garth Chapman features, such as our high quality standards on construction techniques and finishes,” says Stephen.

Step onto the verandah and the journey into relaxed lifestyle living begins. The elevated signature portico leads inside, past the formal entry where there is a feeling of spaciousness. The home is open-plan design at its finest; practicality and style harmonise effortlessly to create a charming lifestyle home. There are spacious living and dining areas and a functional kitchen designed to be the heart of this family style home. The kitchen features Caesarstone benchtops along with Miele cooking appliances — including an oven in a tower, and separate microwave and appliances tower, and walk-in pantry.

The laundry features hanging space and cabinetry, and there’s also a media room where the family can break out the popcorn and enjoy the latest blockbuster movies together. At one end of the home is a luxury master bedroom, walk-in wardrobe and ensuite and at the
other end, three spacious kids’ bedrooms, a second bathroom and a toilet.

Underfoot, polished mixed hardwood floors are warm and inviting and there are 2700mm (9ft) ceilings as a standard feature with ample generous sized windows. Outdoor living is taken care of, with verandahs at the front and rear, ensuring the family can enjoy casual alfresco living. Each aspect of the home has been designed with relaxed easy care living in mind, but with quality that is built to last.
