A contemporary two-storey family residence designed for effortless entertaining and casual indoor-outdoor living

From the spacious living areas and multipurpose media room to the inviting pool flanked by a well-equipped cabana, this is a home designed for effortless entertaining and easy living. Light-filled and airy, it is home to a professional couple with two young girls and a testament to the design skills of Michael Sasso, Director of Aspect Designs.

The family had purchased a site in Bella Vista, an outer suburb of Sydney, but the shape of the land made it difficult for them to proceed with their original plan, which was to adapt a project home design. They soon realised this approach wasn’t going to work, so they decided the only solution was a custom designed home.

“The design had to address the shape of the site, the orientation, and provide privacy from the neighbours — it also had to incorporate a pool,” explains Michael. “The result is a home with an open living plan, one that seamlessly flows out to an outdoor living that features a pool and poolside cabana. Beyond that, the ground opens up to provide a lawn area.

“The thoughtful design of the two-storey home facilitates easy communication between spaces on both levels yet provides for the separation of adult and kids’ living areas, which will be a boon when the children become teenagers. As for the look of the house, they wanted it to be contemporary but different to the other contemporary homes that surrounded it.”

Michael’s design provides everything the family needs. There are four bedrooms, a study and media room, four bathrooms plus a powder room, multiple living areas and a modern kitchen with Smeg appliances, and a butler’s pantry. For maximum comfort there is underfloor heating in the tiled areas, individually-controlled air-conditioning to all rooms, and three fireplaces to warm the toes.

Enhancing the sense of space and light, a void soars over the ground-floor dining area, there are large banks of windows, and the interior walls are painted a fresh white.

Care was taken with every design choice and all product and material selections, with the emphasis placed on low maintenance, longevity and luxury. This ranges from the Low-e (smart) glass for the windows and doors to the built-in furniture. It also extends to the strategic use of louvre windows to capture cooling breezes and the well-considered use of timber (such as on the stairs).

The success of this project is due to the collaboration between Aspect Designs, Building Excellence Australia (who won an award for the construction of the home) and the homeowners. Says Michael, “The owners had a lot of involvement during the design and building processes and, as a result, they have a home they love — and just as importantly, one that really reflects who they are.”

Enjoy a sense of serenity from the first moment you spy this spacious and light-filled open-plan family home

Designed to reflect the relaxed Queensland indoor-outdoor lifestyle, The Zen by McLachlan Homes is a family-friendly home that impresses from the moment you pull up outside. Says Sally McLachlan of McLachlan Homes, “This is a unique abode with extraordinary street appeal. The stunning exterior instantly evokes a feeling of serenity, in keeping with the name of the design.

“The facade showcases the perfect blend of materials — Country Ledgestone Aspen stone, textured render and smooth cladding — along with an elegant colour palette. Designed to embrace a corner block, The Zen’s striking contemporary facade successfully fuses clean modern lines with Asian-style elements.”

This is a home that draws you in, and once you’re inside the open-plan layout and abundance of natural light make a strong first impression. A home designed as an urban retreat — a place of sanctuary removed from the pressures and fast pace of modern life — The Zen features only the finest materials and an interior design that is second to none.

From the front door, Travertino rectified tiling guides you right into the hub of the home where you will find the kitchen plus dining and family areas. This part of the home boasts a 3.9m-high ceiling with modern square-set cornicing and elegant timber detailing. Adding to the look of sophistication, the family area features bespoke cabinetry and a perfectly appointed adjoining bar — just the thing for after-dinner drinks or a weekend party.

“Drawing on decades of experience, our talented team of designers cleverly positioned the kitchen in such a way that it seems to unveil itself from every angle,” says Sally. “The cabinetry design and colour selection was well thought out and features a mix of Anthracite Highland and Natural Arlington Oak to both base and overheads.

“The luxurious island bench beautifully blends both colours and showcases the Turbine Grey Caesarstone benchtops. Additions such as under-mount sinks, feature pendant lighting and open shelving create a lavish look. Additional storage is plentiful and this includes the large butler’s pantry which also has a sink.

“Concealed behind an impressive barn-style door with exposed black hardware sits a spacious media room with an elevated platform. Adjacent is an intelligently designed study nook with a custom-made desk, which comfortably seats two, and overhead cabinetry for storage.”
A family home, The Zen offers four bedrooms, a lavish family bathroom with ceiling-height tiling, floating cabinetry, and modern black trim details along with a luxurious powder room.

The large master suite is located away from the kids’ spaces for privacy. From this spacious suite you can enjoy a stunning view of the swimming pool and adjoining pergola, not to mention a fully fitted-out walk-in robe and a thoughtfully designed spa-style ensuite. The latter includes a freestanding bath, dual vanities, recessed shaving cabinets, a walk-in shower and a separate toilet.

“With opulent features and high-quality workmanship, this design stands apart from the crowd,” says Sally. “An easily adaptable family home with functional interior spaces, The Zen also has immense curb appeal.”

Porcelain pavers and height-adjustable pedestals are the keys to renovating your way to a superb summer soiree.

Now that summer is here, after a crisp, wet spring and a long, chilly winter, it’s time to start sprucing up long-neglected gardens and balconies to create perfect spaces for outdoor soirees with families and friends. In addition to giving your plants some love, getting the lawn looking perfect and a good spring clean, you may also want to consider an outdoor renovation to transform the space into an entertainer’s dream.

According to Beaumont Tiles’ design specialist Rachel Gilding, now is a great time to “leap into a backyard renovation” to ensure it’s ready for the social season. “Doing a spruce-up can take your backyard from drab to fab, after which you can put your feet up, relax with friends and enjoy your efforts — and the summer sun,” she says.

To help inspire a reno and fast-track your summer makeover, Rachel shares two style-forward tricks. The first is “Pompeii all the way”. The natural earth colouring, elegant demeanour and durability of Pompeii Travertine make it the perfect choice for everything from outdoor patios to poolside pathways — also indoor living spaces that flow to the outside.

Natural travertine does require ongoing maintenance, which can be a problem for busy families. The answer is to use a stone emulation paver like Pompeii Travertine. “Thanks to digital printing technologies, you can easily blend the beauty of natural stone with the durability and low-maintenance benefits of porcelain 20mm pavers,” says Rachel. “And when it comes to a summer reno, there is only one word — Pompeii. This gorgeous range of travertine emulation porcelain pavers is timeless.”

Pompeii boasts 24 faces, meaning no two tiles per box look the same, and it comes in two shades: the lovely light-coloured Crema and the slightly darker Grigio. “Pompeii in 9.5mm thickness also comes with Beaumont’s latest exclusive development in tile glazing technology — Microtec. This is activated when wet to provide high slip resistance, no matter how smooth the tiles.”

Rachel’s second trick is to “put it on a pedestal”. Whether opting for Pompeii or another 20mm porcelain paver, homeowners and renters can quickly and easily refresh their outdoor spaces with Beaumont’s new pedestal system.

“Beaumont’s KEKSIÄ pedestals are perfect for those looking for a quick win for an outdoor decking area, balcony or courtyard and are great for renters,” says Rachel. “The height-adjustable pedestals, coupled with most 20mm porcelain pavers, make creating patios, water features and functional terrace courtyards easy — there’s no need for expensive structural work or a permanent structure.

“What also makes this so impressive is that the system is ideal for running cables, drainage and lighting systems underneath the floor to keep the surface clear of clutter and summer-season ready.”

In the modern curated home, workout equipment might stick out like the proverbial ‘sore thumb’, and bring down its design credentials.

In order to rectify this, Technogym has come up with beautifully designed home gym equipment that seamlessly fits in with our considered floor plans. Technogym has the capacity- in the same way that beautifully crafted furniture does – to elevate a given space and fit in seamlessly with its surroundings.

Just as Covid has impacted the way in which we now approach working from home, it has also changed how we manage our fitness. Today, more people are opting to ‘bring the gym home’ to meet their fitness needs, as well as creating their own wellness spaces for health and relaxation. This enables us to have control over our own fitness regime and to pursue a healthy lifestyle in the comfort of our own home.

Technogym’s equipment has been at the forefront in the creation of tailoring wellness spaces to adapt to the varying demands of everyday life. So as well as offering a means for physical workout, it also must have the ability to create a space for mental well-being. In stressful times, we all need to be able to disconnect from the outside world and find balance and joy.

As more people now work from home than at any other point in our history, a sense of freedom and autonomy has emerged. Technogym gives people the capacity to disconnect from work and life’s stresses, whilst continuing to engage in healthy activity. Technogym’s philosophy is to combine great design and an attention to detail that will complement any interior, while still creating a space that will enable the physical, mental and aesthetic needs to be met.

Glamping has become increasingly popular over the years as people are wanting that hotel and home feel while enjoying the adventure recreation of camping out in the bush.

So, what is glamping?

According to the oxford dictionary, “glamping is a form of camping involving accommodation and facilities more luxurious than those associated with traditional camping”. Glamping is where nature blends with modern comfort. To go into a little more detail about the difference between camping and glamping. Camping you usually pack your own tent and pitch it in the middle of nowhere and hope it won’t leak if it rains, and glamping you pull up to a specific location that already has accomodation and there you will find a framed structure with all the required amenities for example, electricity and running water. It’s just like a tiny home but MUCH cheaper 😉

What is the history of glamping?

The word glamping, meaning glamorous camping, first turned up in 2005 in the UK and was later in 2016 added to the oxford dictionary. In the 16th century a duke pitched tents and filled them all with the same type of furniture and facilities as his home palace to accommodate King James V and his mother. A few hundred years later in roughly the 1920s the wealthy Americans and British started getting really into African safari due to them having more of a homely and luxurious feel rather than pitching a tent and sleeping on the floor.

The modern equivalent of glamping requires a bit of yesterday’s amenities and a bit of today’s technology. Glamping structures come in several designs such as safari tents, pods, bell tents, yurts, tipis, tree houses, pods, vintage caravans, vintage trailers and of course our domes.

Indoor health and exceptional energy efficiency are front and centre in this 4-bedroom home in Melbourne built to the Passive House standard, which is a rigorous, voluntary standard for energy efficiency in a building, and reducing its ecological footprint.

With a low-lying form, the building remains humble to its existing protected surrounding landscape of pine and gum trees. Curved timber screens soften the corners and Blackbutt Shou Sugi Ban external cladding aid to blur the line between building and bushland.

Modular Passive House Modular Passive House

A 10m long projecting clerestory roof offer scattered glimpses of the surrounding southern tree canopy from the interior spaces through an angled mirrored ceiling along the corridor linking the bedrooms, while the main living area opens through large lift-slide doors to a deck which overlooks the garden below and vista beyond to the north.

The home acts as a sanctuary for the family. Designed to provide a strong connection to nature, it emphasises well-being and environmental sustainability through ensuring optimum indoor quality and thermal comfort all year round with minimal energy consumption.

Modular Passive House Modular Passive House

The ‘best-of-both-worlds’ Wood-Alu Range was used in this project with Victorian ash hardwood frames on the inside with low maintenance exterior aluminium cladding. The tilt & turn windows, clerestory and picture windows, lift-slide and hinged doors are highly energy efficient, triple glazed and airtight with a U-value of less than 1. The entrance combination features a step-free magnetic threshold to ensure draft-free living.

The home utilises the efficiencies of modular construction to meet time, cost and quality targets that would usually be unachievable with a standard onsite build.

MALVERN MAGIC – A distinctly different front and rear garden and pool area set this Melbourne bungalow renovation project apart from the rest.

KHD Landscape Engineering Solutions loves working with designers and clients who challenge themselves to bring out the best in their homes. A good case in point is this major renovation to a 1930s Malvern bungalow which presented myriad interesting challenges, including a rear garden and pool area that required a completely different look and feel to the front garden.

KHD Landscaping Supplies KHD Landscaping Supplies

In addition, a multi-car garage was to be housed under a concrete slab beneath the front garden. The client also insisted Australian bluestone pavers be installed over a waterproof membrane. Finally, a car lift platform required a low-profile tile with enough strength to handle vehicular traffic.

For the front garden, 40mm-thick Australian bluestone in an ashlar pattern was laid on paver supports to ensure the membrane was protected. This allows the tiles to be removed easily and the membrane inspected or repaired if necessary.

KHD Landscaping Supplies KHD Landscaping Supplies

The car lift platform required thinner tiles, so 100 x 100mmx20mm granite cobbles were installed. The grey-coloured cobbles complement the bluestone and are glued directly to the car platform steel sub-base. An exfoliated finish ensures high slip resistance.

The rear of the property required a completely different treatment. The client chose silver travertine tiles and pool coping boasting beautiful colour tones that complement the pool tile colour and outdoor furniture.

The garden design, by Jane Jones Landscapes, showcases the house beautifully. Jane used advanced plant stock to give the project an instant established feel and connect the garden to the heritage tree-lined streetscape.

DEDON have a reputation for being specialists in furniture for outdoor living spaces of all kinds, selecting only the most beautiful and robust materials for every outdoor setting.

No matter what kind of outdoor space you are working with, from covered terraces, exposed poolsides, beachfront decks or sunny narrow balcony – DEDON supply durable outdoor furniture to stand the test of time.

DEDON are a German furniture brand known primarily for their iconic fibre. A weaving material invented and pioneered by Dedon, this environmentally-friendly fibre is unrivalled for strength, durability, weather fastness and luxuriousness of colour, texture and touch. It is also recyclable and non-toxic, burning as cleanly as candle wax. DEDON pieces are made by hand with the utmost attention to detail, by expert weavers and craftspeople.

A DEDON weaver at work on an intricate piece, and the beautiful detail of a teak table.

In recent years, Dedon have been developing a range of outdoor furniture collections that utilise high-quality teak sourced from sustainable plantations. Teak is a valuable timber resource, and important part of our ecosystem. DEDON are part of a program that plants a new teak tree for every tree used. When allowed to age naturally outdoors, teak furniture will slowly turn to a soft, silver grey as surface pigments fade.

Premium teak is from the very core of the teak tree. As such, it is rich in natural tannins and able to withstand harsh weather conditions over an exceptionally long lifetime. The wood is resistant to rain, strong sunlight, freezing conditions and fluctuating temperatures. These qualities make it particularly well-suited to longterm outdoor use. Lower quality, cheaper teak is not as rich in oils and is prone to splitting and cracking in the elements.

Teak Maintenance

To retain the original golden hue of teak outdoor furniture, use DEDON teak oil at least twice a year. To clean the timber, use a DEDON cleaning agent at least once per year. We recommend twice a year, just before the Summer, and just before the Winter. To remove any rough grain and restore the timber to its smooth finish, lightly sand the surface.
