Welcome to the Scandinavian-inspired kitchen that went from a shabby ‘70s kitchen to a modern marvel, boasting angular overtones and an industrial accent.

The main run of the cabinetry stretches over 4.5m as it exaggerates the raked ceiling and pulls the eye skyward. Keeping the existing bay windows to the left of the kitchen, the design team from Western Cabinets placed the integrated appliances on the back wall. The rear elevation is designed to house the main oven, combi microwave, integrated family-sized fridge and ample pantry storage. The induction cooktop is placed to the left of the appliances with large drawers positioned below, while the statement stand-alone classic matt-black Falmec rangehood draws attention to the expansive height of the ceilings.

The oversized rectangular island is centrally positioned and offers an abundance of drawer storage. The subtle grey tones of the textured panels to the rear of the island bring softness to the palette and warmth to the design. Meanwhile, a two-way breakfast bar lifts the island as it overlaps into the large-scale entryway linking the kitchen to the living area.

The design is highly functional, with careful consideration given to the selection of materials. In keeping with the modern transformation, chalky greys and matt blacks were combined with concrete benches, marble and oak. The contrasting matt-black separated hood sits beautifully against the sheeted marble splashback as chalky grey cabinetry pops from the traditional white walls.

We wouldn’t mind buttering a muffin in this unique kitchen that’s fresh and highly functional, with subtle industrial vibes.

After an extended voting period, the KBDI & KBQ People’s Choice Winners have been announced for 2020

After an extended voting period due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the winners of the KBDI & KBQ People’s Choice Awards for 2020 have finally been announced. With even more entrants and categories than previous years, there was no shortage of stunning design choices – including our winners in the three key categories of Kitchen, Bathroom and Design Space.

KBDi & KBQ People’s Choice: Kitchen of the Year 2020

KBDi & KBQ People’s Choice Winners of 2020 Announced

The most popular kitchen of this year’s awards was this stylish design by Maria Cerne of Canberra-based Studio Black Interiors. Combining stylish gunmetal grey fixtures and fittings with recycled timber and dramatic vertical wall cladding, this kitchen is sleek, modern and highly functional.

KBDi & KBQ People’s Choice: Bathroom of the Year 2020

KBDi & KBQ People’s Choice Winners of 2020 Announced!

Taking home this year’s Bathroom of the Year award is Victorian-based designer Teresa Kleeman of Embracing Space. Inspired by a black-and-white theme, the clean lines and contemporary shape of the Meir tapware chosen by Teresa flowed through to the selection of a large-scale custom curved mirror and notes of matt black that echo around the space and contrast against the white basin and timber.

KBDi & KBQ People’s Choice: Design Space of the Year 2020

KBDi & KBQ People’s Choice Winners of 2020 Announced!

As a first this year, CompleteHome and Kitchens & Bathrooms Quarterly chose to award a third People’s Choice from the other KBDi categories on offer, including this year’s winner in the Design Space category; Tameka Moffat of Tameka Moffat Designs. The winning space was part of a high-end residential project in NSW with a brief to design a functional, elegant and timeless home to accommodate a family of five for many years. Incorporating luxury inclusions such as CDK limestone benchtops and Kit Kat tiles to create a textural element, this space is contemporary yet simplistic and supremely functional.

We would love to congratulate all the highly-talented designers who entered this year, as well as all of our Complete Home audience who have voted in the competition!

A light, natural colour palette and integrated or concealed appliances magnify a slight kitchen that was named the KBDI Winner in the Designer Small Kitchens SA section and the 2019 HIA Winner in the Renovated Kitchen up to $35K category.

The homeowners were looking for a kitchen with a twist — something a little different to reflect their personalities and the quirky vibe of the 1960s abode they call home. The kitchen’s scant parameters inspired a design solution that focused on maximising bench space and concealing appliances wherever possible. The integration of the fridge/freezer and dishwasher maximises the visual balance, so the space appears streamlined. Similarly, the microwave rests on the underside of the island bench, out of sight but functional as ever and within easy reach.

White Smeg appliances blend in with the door and drawer fronts, extending the illusion of space and producing a harmonious palette infiltrated by hoop pine plywood feature framework. The incorporation of framework provided an opportunity for a clever notch-out handle detail, thus negating the need for handles on drawer and door fronts, adding to the clean, detailed look. Additionally, the plywood lends a warm textural element to the otherwise stark kitchen.

The proximity of the kitchen to the open-plan living and dining area meant there was no need for seating at the island. This fact has safeguarded the kitchen against visual clutter and freed up floor space. Open-tray storage and open shelving above the fridge break up the expanse of white and soften the grid structure, while supplying endearing nooks for special pieces and useful items.

Concrete-look stone benchtops add earthiness and link to the tile splashback. The shade of the domed tiles is akin to the benchtops and proffers a textured visual connection between the two elements. The tiling stretches to the top of the wall adjacent to the splashback and around the window to balance out negative space.
White, bright and wonderful, this SpaceCraft Joinery kitchen is the whole package.
