Creating an area for small appliances, where pocket doors could be left open when in use without obstructing the working space, was a must. The Blum LEGRABOX drawer system within the pantries improves functionality and accessibility while also looking stylish. The cooking zone, with its wall ovens, required plenty of bench space and a powerful extraction system. With a bounty of available room, the kitchen is able to accommodate both the cook and their keen diners, perfectly suited to a family.

Before the new design and build, the previous U-shaped space was too small to adequately cater for the family’s needs. Now in its place is a stylish kitchen that celebrates family living with functionality in spades, all wrapped up in a beautiful contemporary package.

This kitchen by Direct Kitchens speaks volumes about good design and functionality — there really is no need to forgo one for the other. Each well-considered element works harmoniously with the other.

The decorative grey tiles above the oven and stove are a feature, handpicked by the owners. They complement the cool white cupboards and Caesarstone White Attica benchtops.

The glass-fronted cupboards offer a place to store decorative elements, while the corner pantry with stone shelving is so attractive it almost seems a shame to keep it behind closed doors. It offers ample storage.

Sometimes it’s the little things that can have the biggest visual impact. In this kitchen, decorative touches, like the canopy with corbels, inject a subtle sophistication. The decorative wall pillars on the kitchen island are another beautiful feature.

While it’s common to include a sink in an island bench, we recently completed a kitchen that features a plumbed drinks trough down the centre of their island. Now, guests can congregate around this kitchen focal point and help themselves to drinks. What a brilliant idea!

2. Creating a stylish focal point for open plan living

Don’t feel obliged to blend your kitchen island with your other kitchen cabinetry. Make it stand out. Here are a few ideas:

• Create an interesting architectural detail in your home by building an island with an unusual shape or at an interesting angle to the rest of your kitchen
• Use different coloured cabinetry or benchtop to the rest of your kitchen
• Include open shelving in your island to store recipe books or display your favourite glassware or platters

3. Add multiple layers to your island

Your island bench doesn’t need to be one height. In fact, the latest trend is to integrate a dining table into your island. For extra sophistication, use a feature material for the top of your table such as timber or marble.

Here, the island serves triple duty, acting as a home for a sink, a storage space and a preparation area all in one. But its hard work doesn’t stop there. A timber extension serves as a dining table, created at the same height as the bench for a sense of continuity.

Making good use of space was a theme of this home renovation. Originally, there was a window on the back kitchen wall which meant cabinetry could not extend to full height. A half-wall ate into the footprint of the room, with a fireplace again adding bulk and making the space feel truly closed in.

The redesign has enabled the owners to maximise their cabinetry and therefore storage capacity without sacrificing on natural light. The final result is a grand kitchen dripping with the sort of elegance that befits the rest of the home, with the island as the stunning hero piece.
