This pre-sale renovation enhances and magnifies a compromised main artery within the home, while utilising a clever layout to unite and harmonise adjoining living spaces

Laminex White Silk two-pack satin doors balance a fearless and bold Char Oak laminate grain, while a reflectant mirror provides scope to an otherwise subtle and understated Smartstone Arcadia benchtop. A minimalist facade conceals an ingenious cabinet layout providing generous storage space.

The modest use of stone, particularly around the island, helped maintain the budget and the use of two-pack panels to the floor around the island perimeters provides the solid ‘block’ look the owners were after. Flush horizontal and vertical surfaces further enhance this.

MDF wall panels painted to suit the walls soften the extended and potentially overpowering staircase wall. They also assist in camouflaging door access into both under the stairs as well as the laundry. An island with casual seating adds design appeal as well as functionality. From the entry, the island displays characteristics of a warm and welcoming environment, with minimal obstruction to the main walkway linking the dining and living areas.

We love the cleverly concealed under-stair storage and laundry.

A fusion of graceful and restrained pillars with refined decorative features, the romantic tones of this kitchen perfectly compliment the adjoining areas, remaining functional while retaining an understated elegance

The owners requested the finished project adopt a tone of understated grace – in particular adopting a look that would not dominate the adjoining rooms. Therefore, a balance of minimalism, with subtle romantic detailing to inject character and flair was carefully designed. Clean, geometrically balanced lines in the horizontal and vertical blocks of drawers and cabinetry are personalised with Shaker-style panelling and antique-look finger-pull handles. The brilliant white colour scheme, a quintessential approach to minimalist style, is given decorative appeal with the Victorian-style gutter cornices and ornate ceiling plaster panel, complimented by the richly stained timber flooring and cane high chairs. The island is the focal point of the design, large enough to truly replace a dining table, while still providing optimum functionality as both storage and prep area.

Designed for a client who’s a passionate chef, this warehouse-style kitchen champions practicality

“Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry allows for maximum storage, with practical semi-gloss panels in natural white hiding everything from steak lockers to imported defrosting appliances. Originally a confined and restricted space, we combined three rooms to give the owner the space he desired, enhancing the airy feeling with some cleverly placed lighting and reflective surfaces. The abundance of stainless steel creates a sleek and utilitarian feel, while being hardwearing and easy to clean. This combined with the simple cabinetry highlights the warmth of the timber flooring, an essential feature that prevents the space from becoming too clinical and unwelcoming. The suspended Miele rangehood ups the drama, as do the pendant lights, but the star of the show is the island. A solid block of stainless steel, the island was designed as the eye-catching centrepiece and, while beautifully industrial, heavy-duty kitchenware adds some serious grunt.”
