This space posed a unique challenge. It had not been updated in 25 years and was lacking in both functionality and design.

The original appliances were outdated and the layout needed changing to increase utility and create more bench space.

Robert Bayly

Seeking to create a space that felt more contemporary and that linked to the outdoor and casual dining area, the homeowner also wanted the design to be in keeping with the existing rooms. The room increased the kitchen space by half, which provided more room to work with but also required careful consideration when the orientation and layout were redesigned. The end result is a bright, polished design with new appliances that add the sought-after modern edge, while the Baltic pine floors soften the look with a more natural touch.

The kitchen now has twin access to create flow and cohesion with the rest of the home, working with the grain of the timber to make for a more harmonious visual effect. The kitchen spans seamlessly into the dining area and also benefits from considerably more natural light post renovation. There’s a balance of open and hidden storage, as well as considerably more bench space and a specially designated area for the coffee machine.

This kitchen was designed as part of a renovation. The new design combined the dark-timber chopping block and chairs with the soft timber floors and the white cabinetry to create a harmonious yet striking appearance.

The natural light that pours in from the large windows in the living area, combined with the kitchen skylight, allows the materials to really shine. An LED strip light rebated into the underside of the upper cabinets allows extra benchtop light.

The space is ergonomic with separate cooking, preparation and washing zones, minimising the traffic throughout the space. The fronts have been custom-made to have 20mm stiles and rails instead of the standard 70mm, while the cabinet internals were made dark instead of the standard white.

There is an exceptional amount of storage space in the base cabinets, through to the tall cabinets and on to the two sets of upper cabinets, which go straight up to the ceiling.
This also creates a seamless floor-to-ceiling balance. There’s a hidden TV behind an upper cabinet to meet the clients’ request for easy entertaining.

The extra-long benchtop, custom-made chopping block, and TV all work together to create the ultimate entertaining space. The large custom-made chopping board in the island allows for easy entertaining and provides a very unique look you don’t see every day.

Some kitchens simply take your breath away — and this room from Smith & Smith Kitchens is one of them.

From the timeless shaker cabinetry and lining board panels to the contemporary square-edged benchtop and pared-back canopy, this kitchen is a recipe for stylish success. The almost navy colour on the cabinetry was chosen to blur the lines between blue and black, ensuring that the dark appliances truly appeared at home in the space. This cabinetry was teamed with perfectly centred brass handles, providing a fresh take on a traditional look.

When this cabinetry is partnered with the natural stone benchtops, the result is fresh and modern yet not so far from traditional as to be jarring. These natural honed marble benchtops were chosen not only for their striking looks, but also for their ability to reduce sun glare. The gas cooker was also moved farther out to ensure minimal sunshine landed on the appliance.

A butler’s pantry was created by removing the old study wall and window and introducing a cavity slider. Here, the splashback and benchtop match the kitchen, ensuring that a sense of seamless living prevails and also allowing for easy cleaning. A second sink was placed in the butler’s pantry to use alongside the appliances.

Managing the space, busy family life and a gorgeous aesthetic, this new kitchen is a smooth operator

“The huge space provided the main challenge to this renovation. The previous kitchen looked out of place, and we had to be careful to keep main areas connected — to ensure simple tasks didn’t require miles of walking! The design had to be durable enough to suit a busy everyday routine, but flexible enough to accommodate huge family gatherings — hence the double dishwasher, the two ovens and the oversized butler’s pantry. The long floating-look island, featuring floating tables at both ends, offers heaps of preparation space and loads of versatility, and the toughened glass and steel supports create a long, sleek modern look. Lighting was also a key design feature, and LED up and downlighting play a key role in making a large space glow with warmth, ensuring guests feel invited in rather than shut out. Contemporary rounded accessories complete the look, and contrast perfectly with the sleek, modern lines of the cabinetry.”

Expert tip: Don’t forget about lighting — as this design shows, it can create a big impact!

A modern and cool kitchen that uses minimalism and open spaces

“When designing this kitchen, I wanted to create a clean and minimalistic feel to this open space. I started with a crisp white-on-white colour scheme, and featured large kitchen drawers with no handles for an integrated look.  The lighting above the drawers reflects the gloss finish and it also highlights the reflective glass of the oven.

When it came to designing the 3.7m-long island, I wanted to create a central feature to the space and incorporate an inviting feel to the kitchen to generate warmth. I selected Staron Solid Surfaces in Quasar White to comply with the colour scheme. I continued the benchtop all the way down the sides of the island to the floor, and clad it to the front.

With no open joins, the Staron continues around the island in one, monolithic piece. I also featured double stainless-steel sinks that are undermounted for a sleek look. The smoothness of Staron is warm to touch and inviting to the homeowners and guests. Overall this space has transformed into a beautiful and appealing kitchen to live and entertain in.”
