This new double storey custom home built by Hedger Constructions is the epitome of modern elegance.

Situated on a suburban Melbourne block, the design intent was to create a unique and timeless home with a clean aesthetic that also utilised colour and texture to create visual interest. Catering for a large family, the home needed to be minimal in upkeep and have an emphasis on lifestyle enjoyment for family and friends, coupled with functionality.

Hedger Constructions

Given its height, it was important that the home not feel imposing. To achieve this, the footprint of the upper floor is smaller than the lower level, and outdoor entertainment spaces including the pool and outdoor kitchen have been carefully positioned, to ensure privacy for occupants and their neighbours.

Externally the home uses a neutral colour palette of polished cement render, with the upper level in a darker tone to accent the deeply inset windows. This innovative design provides appropriate window shading to minimise heat transfer and provide thermal benefits. Powder coated aluminium slats are the primary feature of the external façade ensuring privacy screening and aesthetic appeal. The front entry is designed for wow-factor and includes a rendered front fence and feature dark timber front door with a hemisphere handle.

Hedger Constructions

Upon entry visitors are greeted with expansive over height ceilings, making all the shared spaces throughout the property feel exceptionally large. Feature pendant lighting bathes the space in a golden hue, illuminating access to the steel and timber floating staircase, positioned against a grey feature wall.

Hedger Constructions

Dark timber flooring flows throughout the property, contrasting beautifully with the crisp white interiors. From the wide entry hall, occupants access a series of private spaces including the home office and informal dining and lounge. A concealed sliding door within the hallway provides delineation from these private areas to the shared open plan zone, whilst minimising sound intrusion.

Hedger Constructions

Effortless Entertaining with Open Plan Kitchen, Living, and Dining

The open plan kitchen, living and dining zone provides effortless entertaining. In the kitchen a marbled waterfall end island bench is adorned with timber panelling, adding texture to an otherwise seamless cabinetry design. The inclusion of black tapware and steel window frames create a striking interplay of light and dark, strengthened by the contrast of the dark timber flooring to create a balanced layout.

Hedger Constructions

Within the dining and living space, timber-panelled storage harmonises with marble benchtops, seamlessly merging functionality with aesthetics. An open dining area, subtly sectioned off by privacy walls, adds a sense of intimacy to the expansive design, whilst comfortably including a ten-seat dining table. The living space provides plenty of room for family fun and is positioned with direct access to the outdoor kitchen, dining and entertainment area.

In an exceptional example of indoor and outdoor living, wrap around glazing of the living area allows it to open onto an extensive alfresco space. Accessed via a large sliding glass door this paved, undercover area includes outdoor kitchen and dining facilities, ensuring it can be enjoyed regardless of season. The adjacent inground pool and spa creates an outdoor oasis, ideal for entertaining.

Hedger Constructions

Located on the upper level, each of the bedrooms are spacious and thoughtfully designed. Modernity and comfort converge with automatic draped curtains, incorporating a sheer element that adds privacy and soft light. An upstairs entertainment room is also included, offering a retreat from the main communal areas for the children to enjoy.

The beautiful bathrooms throughout the home feature dark floor-to-ceiling marbled tiling juxtaposed by light marble benchtops. Exemplifying the fusion of form and function, niche shelving adds to the seamless design whilst maximising storage.

Hedger Constructions

With over 30 Master Builders Association Awards to date, including multiple Regional Builder of the Year wins, it’s easy to see how Hedger Constructions have created a reputation as one of Victoria’s best custom home builders. Specialising in luxury custom homes, Hedger Constructions are redefining modern living with homes that transcend the traditional. This newly built kitchen is bursting with personality – just as the homeowners requested.

Lovers of bold colour and natural elements, they were craving a kitchen that matched their energy and lively personalities while seamlessly blending in with the rest of their dwelling.
The homeowners gravitate towards shades of green, which is why this hue features so heavily throughout. To keep the kitchen cohesive with the rest of the house while ensuring it will be a space the family adored, green was chosen as the room’s hero colour.

A Newly Built Kitchen Bursting with Personality | GT&B

The home itself is quite a modern design, so it was important to keep that element of modernity within the kitchen’s design while integrating the organic feel the homeowners love. The design team selected a range of organic surfaces for the kitchen — including the simple yet stunning floor tiles by GT&B. The kitchen’s Pegasi Curve Pull Out Sink Mixer in Raw Copper, which was supplied by GT&B, as well as the raw copper shelving detail around the rangehood, add a unique element of interest while accentuating the room’s organic feel.

A Newly Built Kitchen Bursting with Personality | GT&B

Not only do these clever additions command attention, the copper will also agree naturally over time, evolving with the kitchen and the lively homeowners.

Degabriele’s kitchen project in Mosman is a stunning example of blending classic style with modern functionality.

Situated in a beautiful Federation home, the kitchen exudes charm and modern functionality with its natural marble benchtop and splashback, hand-painted cabinetry, and proud kickboards that mirror the home’s character.

Designed for a young family which loves entertaining, the kitchen was crafted to be an inviting space for everyday use and a real “entertainer’s delight”. The addition of a built-in bar seamlessly connects the kitchen, dining and living areas, creating a harmonious flow for social gatherings.

DeGabriele Kitchens

To ensure durability and timelessness, high-quality joinery and finishes were used throughout the kitchen. The shift from a Shaker-style profile to a customised Tuscany profile with a V-groove on the exterior edges and Vivid White colour brought an open and timeless look to the space.

The redesign also involved thoughtful changes to enhance modern functionality. The island was updated with rounded edges and increased storage, featuring a clever lift-up pocket door for the microwave, discreetly keeping it neat and hidden when not in use. Glass shelves were replaced with cabinets and a fully integrated fridge/freezer for a cohesive look.

Not forgetting the importance of the bar area, the design incorporated marble shelving with strip lighting, creating an attractive display with a real wow factor. Integrated fridge drawers and a wine fridge ensured maximum functionality for avid entertainers.

The natural tones and textures that dominate this dream kitchen were a very conscious choice by the room’s designers.

They were selected specifically to imbue the space with an earthy natural feel so that it fits in seamlessly with the nature reserves surrounding the property. The timber finishes and GT&B splashback tiles were married with the Corian benchtop to achieve this dream kitchen goal to a tee.

Though the space was designed to withstand the test of time, little touches of modernity are sprinkled throughout. Our favourite? The concealed wireless phone charger, which is placed in the perfect spot for the owners to charge their tech as they prepare dinner.

GT&B

Though this dream kitchen is undeniably beautiful, at the very forefront from the get-go was functionality. The open layout was chosen to ensure the homeowners had plenty of room to prep and cook their meals, as well as a place to sit and enjoy a drink while sharing stories of their day. All appliances and often-used accessories are placed close together for efficiency, ensuring cooking meals and cleaning up afterwards are as quick as possible.

The kitchen is large, but it was designed to be easy to navigate. We have no doubt the homeowners are thrilled with the beauty and functionality their new kitchen has brought to their family home.

These award-winning outdoor spaces that wrap around this Eastern Sydney home fuse formal and modern design influences

With its carefully considered combination of formal planting and hard landscaping, the elegant front garden is the perfect foil to the home’s contemporary, clean-lined facade. The garden, which was constructed by Eloquent Landscapes, working to a design by Myles Baldwin Design, has a sense of grandeur about it yet is decidedly modern.

“The client wanted a contemporary, formal garden to complement his impressive new home, and he wanted us to use advanced plants to ensure the garden had a well-established look from the outset,” explains Ziggy Kabbout, owner of Eloquent Landscapes. In the main front garden, the carefully thought-out planting scheme includes Buxus ‘Japonica’ (clipped into balls) and three 500-litre Pyrus ‘Burgundy Snow’. The vibrant green of the plants is offset by the sophisticated grey of the bluestone paving and the crisp white of the boundary and raised planter walls.

The project encompassed much more than the entry garden, however, and a great deal of behind-the-scenes work, along with a high level of construction expertise and attention to detail, was also involved. As an illustration of the latter, great precision was required to achieve the cross pattern banding in the front garden paving while installing the large, heavy pavers that form the path connecting front and rear gardens was a time- and labour-intensive task. Considerable skill was also needed to form up eight planter boxes, some of them rectangular, others square.

Likewise, excellent planning and careful time management were key. “In the rear garden, for example, we had to carefully time the hand excavation of two trenches along the side of the tennis court — one for the Ficus ‘Hilii’ hedging, the other for the Trachelospermum jasminoides,” says Ziggy.

“As the tennis court turf was to be installed within a week, the excavation, irrigation and planting needed to be completed within that timeframe so there would be no damage to the tennis court once the turf went down.”

The Eloquent Landscapes’ touch can also be seen in the rear outdoor entertaining area. This is comprised of an undercover tiled area and a cabana which is accessed through a glass pool gate. “The cabana is a standout feature thanks to its cactus-themed rooftop garden. Among the plants, many of which cascade over the edge, you will find Raphiolepsis ‘Oriental Pearl’, Santolina chamercyparyssus, Casuarina ‘Cousin It’, Agave stricta, Senecio mandraliscae, Cereus peruvianus ‘Monsterous Green’ and Opuntia microdaysis. The casual nature of the planting is a nice contrast to the formality of the front garden,” says Ziggy.

Clearly, the planting is the star of the show, whether it’s the extensive use of Buxus hedging, neatly clipped into square or round shapes, or the large feature planter in the front garden which is home to a 500-litre Olea ‘Europaea’ underplanted with Gardenia ‘Radicans’ and Senecio mandaliscae — but it’s the garden lighting that brings the spaces to life at night.

Thanks to Eloquent Landscapes’ skill, the outdoor spaces that wrap around the home now showcase the striking architecture to perfection — and, importantly, will maintain their good looks well into the future.

In recognition of the high calibre of the work, this project won Gold and Best in Category for Eloquent Landscapes in the Residential Construction Up To $50,000 category in The Landscape Association’s 2019 Landscape Excellence Awards.

With big ideas and a limited budget, this family bungalow was reconfigured and reoriented through a clever manipulation of the roofline. Bungalow Home design

Bungalows make a great family home, but a lot of the traditional designs lack connection to natural light and exterior environments that most modern Australian families desire. With a limited budget and big goals, Splinter Society Architecture transformed Bungalow 8 House into a comfortable family home that enjoys the simple pleasures of domestic architecture.

“Addressing the lack of connection to the garden and the missing northerly aspect, making the home more sustainable and creating larger family/entertaining spaces were the key aspects of the brief,” says director of Splinter Society Architecture, Chris Stanley. “Beyond that, there were layers of influence our clients desired that related to their personal tastes, including an interest in Japanese design.”

Kitchen grand design

The existing weatherboard bungalow boasted a basic configuration with little light and a “lean to” at the rear, which blocked a connection between the living spaces and large backyard. Considering the homeowners’ personal interest in Japanese design, reorientating the home from a west-facing dwelling to the north was a desired feature. However, twisting a home with a limited budget is certainly a challenge, one that Splinter Society Architecture cleverly managed through a triangular addition that inevitably pulled together a collection of the homeowners’ ideas into a simple design proposition.

“Rather than creating a traditional ‘box on the back’ renovation, we devised a triangular roof form that serves to shift the orientation of the rear from west to north. Furthermore, it creates a large eave to the west, allowing a covered outdoor space and significant protection from the west sun,” says Chris.

Modern home design

Bungalow 8 House is an adaptive reuse of the original structure that retains as much of the existing layout while creating a modern, free-flowing family home. The triangular form not only reorientates the abode’s primary spaces, but also contributes to the dwelling’s passive heating and cooling functions. Guided by the homeowners’ love of Japanese design, the material palette is made up of various natural materials and raw textures. Concrete masonry, natural stone, radially sawn ash wood and burnished finishes come together to provide warmth, lightness and connection to the exterior landscape.

Bungalow 8 Home

“I would say this project is special because of its aspiration to not be grand,” says Chris. “It is special because it takes a modest home and budget and creates a highly sustainable family house that functions well and is a very happy place to inhabit,” says Chris.

Bungalow 8 is characterised by quality spaces that are well connected to natural light, to its exterior garden and well zoned for family interaction, while responding to a broader sense of responsibility to the environment.

This narrow yard has been radically transformed from a basic inner-west grassed yard to a space that exemplifies exotic living

The Brief

Building a vibrant, modern and engaging garden for a small inner-west worker’s cottage does not come without its challenges. Consequently, for GOODMANORS Pool + Garden this involved a complete overhaul of the original grassed yard into an area for entertaining, with barbecue and outdoor dining space, a spa and an adjoining area to relax in the sun. A low maintenance garden was a must. As well as this, the new space would have to be somewhere the family could spend time together.

The Design

The design was influenced by the owners, both graphic designers. A style that matched a recent modern Industrial-inspired renovation was a must, and so the focus became a sophisticated tropical garden. With the house exterior in white, GOODMANORS chose a grey feature wall to complement the greens of tropical plants. Plants of different green hues and leaf textures were also included to mix up the design.

To create a space perfect for entertaining, the design also included a deck in spotted gum hardwood and a luxurious spa with a magnesium mineral pool system. Further complementing the home, a seamless indoor-outdoor transition was created.

The Result

The result of this design is not just a relaxing retreat, but an oasis that provides for all in the family – as Landscape Designer Mitchell Turner is happy to point out.

“Whilst this project is one of style and smart design, for me the most inspiring outcome of the project is the time the family has since spent in the space bonding with their teenage daughter,” he says.

“In the day and age of technology it’s refreshing to hear that the family is utilising this space to spend quality time outdoors, which they didn’t otherwise have with their previous garden. Personally, I believe this takes projects like this to the next level and reinforces our design philosophy of uniting living spaces and bringing people together.”

We can spend a considerable amount of our time at home in the kitchen. Whether you’re cooking up a storm, enjoying a delicious meal or even entertaining, it’s important that the kitchen strikes the balance between being functional as well as aesthetically pleasing!

These Perth kitchen renovations exude classic Western Australian design: modern yet simple, embracing traditional design elements but by reinvigorating them for the modern age. These examples show how, via Perth-style design, your kitchen renovation can strike the balance between modern and traditional.

#40297

The centre piece of this kitchen renovation is the central white marble island bench that contrasts beautifully with the dark grey cabinets: it’s ideal for entertaining, and makes for a stunning yet sleek space even when the kitchen is not in use. The lighting design highlights the marble splash-backs on the benches, with an innovative space solution found in renovating unused garage space for a butler’s pantry capping off this modern design.

#8761

This Perth kitchen renovation would seem to be particularly traditional, if it was not for the stunning design feature of black brushed granite, featuring on the island bench and stove splash-back, that has been used to contrast the otherwise white-neutral colour palette. It shows the power of attention to detail throughout the kitchen renovation, and how by embedding design within the permanent fixtures of the kitchen, the rest of the space can maintain it’s minimalist, and clean aesthetic: no need for excess furniture, as the space is stunning at it’s very core.

#40126

The lines of this Perth kitchen design are similar to the other examples, but the use of walnut cabinetry completely changes the space, introducing a more beachy and casual feel to the overall space. The use of indoor plants and the mirror splashback that reflects the natural light further carries this aesthetic.

#36569

This design has a 70’s feel, while also appearing completely at home within the 21st century. The custom cabinetry in this Perth kitchen renovation becomes a design statement in itself, while also providing ample space to hide clutter and kitchen appliances. The use of top-of-the-range fixtures, like the sleek stovetop and filter tap, ensures this design is truly timeless whilst exuding unique character.
