Design & build: Nouvelle Designer Kitchens & Bathrooms

The new owners of this spacious luxury unit in Mosman wanted a refresh to their outdated kitchen, laundry and joinery. Set in the iconic Thirri Tyirri building, something special was required.

Previously, widespread use of rather heavy timber and beige tones created a very sombre “brown” palette, which the owners were keen to change. A contemporary look with plenty of high-end design features was therefore a must. This was brilliantly achieved by the careful selection of each design element.

Nouvelle Designer Kitchens & Bathrooms

As the “hero” element, Laminex’s stunning Brushed Bronze metallic laminate, with its lovely warm coppery-gold tones, was selected for the curved rangehood, feature shelving and island support. This was perfectly paired with Polytec’s Florentine Walnut WoodMatt timber-look laminate, with its subtle woodgrain embossing, for the tall units along one of the walls. Resene Half Spanish White satin for the rest of the cabinets was then chosen to provide a neutral backdrop for the feature elements.

Naturally, a stunning benchtop and splashback was sought to do justice to the other elements. The honed Taj Mahal Quartzite meets the brief perfectly – subtle, luxurious and elegant.

Nouvelle Designer Kitchens & Bathrooms

On the practical side, additional storage was created by adding cabinets to a previously bare wall, which now also accommodates a wine fridge, making this area an ideal spot for a bar or servery.

Drawers were added to the front of the island. This did away with the previous typical front-facing overhang and was cleverly replaced with the side overhang supported by the feature curved metallic section to provide a place to sit at the island. This solution is not only practical, it also creates a visually beautiful feature, establishing a harmonious balance with the rangehood and feature shelves. The seating plan around the end of the island also makes for a more convivial way to sit, dine and converse.

Nouvelle Designer Kitchens & Bathrooms

Handleless cabinetry, pull-out bins and shelves, inner drawers, dedicated areas for tech items such as USB charging, as well as an appliance cabinet accessed with bifold doors all add to the functionality.

The Fisher & Paykel fully integrated ice-maker fridge and the Miele ovens were great choices to make for a clean look along the appliance wall. In other areas of the home, clever compact laundries and streamlined wardrobes were also renovated to create a lighter and fresher appearance.

Beautiful to look at, high quality, functional and timeless in style – that’s the signature Nouvelle design.

Design response

Objective

This contemporary kitchen by Flasting is a modern design that incorporates beautiful finishes.

A contemporary kitchen

The picture frame design with porcelain splashback sets the luxurious tone. Soft grey, white and amber hues in the stone add artistic appeal, and that’s just the beginning. More than ever before thanks to open-plan living, kitchens are now on show as a focal point. This kitchen transformation does not disappoint.

A contemporary kitchen A contemporary open-plan living kitchen by Flasting

The brief from the owners was to create a modern designer space with plenty of eye-catching visual appeal. Once a dated, high-gloss laminated grey kitchen, the new room is inspired by nature. Organic curves soften the space, with a curved column fluted decoration on the island.

The fluted glass doors above the integrated refrigerator add texture, diffusing the light behind. The LED lighting around the rangehood casts a warm subtle glow. Wooden handles are another warm organic element, tying beautifully into the overall design.

This home’s previous kitchen was quite dated, impractical, and not reflective of the homeowner’s personal style, causing her a lot of frustration.

The transformation of a dated kitchen

She approached Dezign Kitchens for a culinary space that would better suit her personal style while still remaining neutral enough to not polarise potential buyers down the track. She was also keen to integrate a large island — as a frequent entertainer, an island was paramount for hassle-free dinner parties.

The transformation of a dated kitchen

The kitchen you see here meets her brief and then some. The stunning contrast of bright white and matt black adds an edgy feel to the home, a perfect fit for its rock ‘n roll aesthetic. The timber elements add a softness that is understated and sophisticated.

The transformation of a dated kitchen with Dezign Kitchens

Using the highest-quality materials was a major objective, as it is with every Dezign Kitchens project, to ensure the space could withstand decades of high use and remain in perfect working order. This room was designed to have the longevity that is expected from a high-end kitchen, as well as the stunning design aesthetic the company is known for.

The transformation of a dated kitchen with Dezign Kitchens

An internal wall was removed to extend the space and create better flow between the kitchen and surrounding living areas. This paved the way for designing a kitchen that is truly the heart of the home. The island was placed to run lengthways through the room to ensure it is expansive, allowing for extensive storage, a wine fridge and plenty of seating for guests.

The transformation of a dated kitchen with Dezign Kitchens

That’s not all there is to love about this kitchen. The large corner pantry with shaped shelves and a huge door opens up to create a mock walk-in pantry, ensuring there will always be ample storage. A bifold-door coffee corner, complete with a stone benchtop inside, extends the useable bench space in the kitchen and creates the perfect place to hide away small appliances.

Kitchens renovation

The bar area, which sits just adjacent to the kitchen, features matching materials to extend the aesthetic of the kitchen into the living area, while allowing the kitchen space to transition seamlessly into a luxury entertaining zone.

A luxurious open-plan kitchen with Carrera Kitchens. This new build flaunts modern luxury with eye-catching elements that add character and bring life to the kitchen.

An entertainer's den with Carrers Kitchens

With a brief to create an open-plan kitchen that complemented the aesthetic of the newly built living spaces and acted as an extension of the outdoor area, Simon Nicholas of Carrera Kitchens has delivered an exciting design that creates the ultimate setting for entertainers.

A luxurious open-plan kitchen with Carrera Kitchens

The spacious kitchen hosts a wealth of storage and bench space, while the large island provides a ton of countertop suitable for food preparation or entertaining needs. The adjoining butler’s pantry offers plenty of room to neatly tuck away appliances and helps keep the main kitchen clutter-free.

A luxurious open-plan kitchen with Carrera Kitchens

Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry not only provides an ample amount of storage, it also pairs well with the timber floating shelves and LED strip lighting that add dimension to the kitchen, and a touch of lux that softens and warms the space.

With room to prepare homemade pizzas and food platters, the large island workstation is perfect for entertainers and culinarians alike. The cove panelling that wraps the curved end of the island adds texture and a modern charm, helping to create a kitchen that guests want to congregate in.

A luxurious open-plan kitchen

Enhancing the entertainer’s paradise, a dry bar was added to a nook sitting between the living room and the kitchen. Crafted from dark cabinetry and shelves that contrast with the kitchen’s predominance of white, the use of LED strip lighting and a mirrored splashback adds a complementary luxe factor that ties the two elements together.

A luxurious open-plan kitchen

Simon’s clever kitchen design effortlessly connects guests to the adjoining living spaces and alfresco dining areas, generating a seamless flow from one space to another. Built by Carrera Kitchens, this culinary masterpiece harmoniously combines functionality with architectural appeal. From couch to cocktail station, cooktop to courtyard, this kitchen has it all.

Designtank has masterfully transformed the home bar and entertaining space of a 1910 Queenslander, beautifully blending modern and traditional elements while preserving the heritage character of the upper level.

Award Category | Home bar/Entertaining – Finalist

On the ground floor, the bar/lounge area underwent a revitalisation to enhance functionality and encourage family gatherings.

To achieve a blend of modern and traditional ambience, Designtank’s Estelle Cameron-designed bespoke cabinetry maximises storage and incorporates display areas and drinks refrigeration. The new cabinetry seamlessly complements the traditional origins of the home, while black metal accents add a touch of contemporary flair, reflecting the outlines in the featured artwork. Brass handles maintain consistency with the kitchen selections.

The bar’s location remained unchanged, with a focus on maximising efficiency. A tall cabinet conceals an angled wall and conveniently stores items for alfresco dining. Under-bench drawers and cupboards provide ample storage for wine and glassware, while a pull-out bin adds practicality. The redesign also doubled cold drink storage with an integrated fridge/freezer and a freestanding dual-zone wine fridge.

By repositioning the sink, a central benchtop area became a stunning focal point adorned with black-framed shelves, glossy tiles and a stylish round wall light. New lighting additions, including a wall light and floor lamp, set the mood for a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Inspired by the existing artwork, the furniture selection features earthy tones like terracotta and mossy green, contrasted by vibrant shades like yellow and pink. The deep navy sofa adds elegance and practicality for a family home, while a large and soft floor rug complements the polished concrete floor and invites bare feet. To control the western sun’s intensity, block-out roller blinds and sheer curtains provide flexible light filtering options.

Modern Kitchen Design Blending Functionality and Style in a 1930s Abode https://www.completehome.com.au/kitchens/modern-kitchen-design.html Wed, 05 Apr 2023 07:01:45 +0000 https://www.completehome.com.au/?p=73495 This modern kitchen design is located at the back of the new extension. This beautiful kitchen is located at the back of the dwelling’s new extension. Looking over the living and dining areas, with the backyard just below, the kitchen is truly the hub of the house.

The homeowners requested a sleek, modern kitchen design that would blend seamlessly into their 1930s abode.

This influences many of the design choices the team at Fresh Kitchen Solutions made, including the colour scheme and the materials and textures that appear throughout.
Horizontal and vertical lines were integrated as a tool to create a sense of balance in the space. The join lines between cabinetry run vertically through both deep and recessed overheads, down to the sets of drawers and freestanding cooker below. There is also the horizontal line of overheads that wrap the kitchen’s three walls.

Fresh Kitchen Solutions

The Blum AVENTOS HK system was chosen for the overheads to create a long horizontal look that complements the drawers below. A deep-tone timber-grain finish was chosen for the overheads to draw the eye through the kitchen. This is a stark contrast to the crisp white features throughout the room, as well as the stone benchtop that extends up the wall as a splashback.

Kitchen Design

This kitchen’s walk-in pantry is truly impressive. It is accessed through two cabinetry doors, which can be closed to hide the mess as needed. The pantry features the homeowners’ secondary cooking appliances, a sink and a dishwasher, and storage space for food that needs to be prepped for meals, which means the main kitchen can be kept clean and tidy at all times. All snack foods are kept in the storage solutions in the main kitchen, so the homeowners do not need to access the pantry other than to prepare meals.

A great deal of thought has been put into every zone in this modern kitchen design to ensure it will service the homeowners’ needs now and well into the future.

While many homeowners lament a lack of space for their dream kitchen, that was certainly not the case in this room from Wood, Marble & White. In this new build, the plans allowed for an absolutely huge kitchen and accompanying butler’s pantry — but that’s not without its challenges.

When you’re working with such a large area, it can be hard to keep a sense of scale and still meet design expectations. The briefing for this room was a modern take on Hamptons style with a touch of glamour — a challenge for Wood, Marble & White’s designer, Katia Slogrove who had to capture that essence without going overboard. Thankfully, this was delivered on an outstanding level. Immediately, your eyes are drawn to that gorgeous stone splashback on the back wall. It’s luxe without being overbearing, and it allows the black Falcon appliances to act as focal points. This material is then used on the 4.6m island bench. Yes, this island is huge, allowing for ample under-bench seating and prep and serving space.
The butler’s pantry is another exercise in space, with a complete working kitchen including the tall fully integrated fridge and freezer, cooktop, oven, rangehood and dishwasher. There’s even a Zip tap and a special small-appliance station, so everything from the blender to the coffee machine is ready to go whenever you need it.

Designer Katia Slogrove

We love the detail in this room, from the island skirting to the decorative surround on the back wall that frames the entire space.

Expert Tip when you have a large space, make sure you work with a professional who can employ restraint and still deliver on style and function.

“The homeowners wanted to renovate their dark, old-fashioned, isolated kitchen and requested a new layout which was traditional but would still include all the benefits of a modern kitchen. The main goal of the renovation was to open up the area to allow the home’s living space to incorporate a bright, open-plan kitchen. Previously the front of the house featured a dark corridor which led to the back of the house where the kitchen and living area are situated. A wall from this corridor was removed during the renovation to create an easy flow from the front door to the kitchen and large family room. It was important that the kitchen included decorative components consistent with the rest of the home, so cabinet doors with a minimal profile were incorporated into the design, a butler’s sink was chosen to add to the kitchen’s traditional feel, and a statement pendant light was installed to create an extra element of interest. The seating area was designed to host friends for catch-ups over wine, and the study area was included to ensure the kids have a dedicated space to complete their homework while meals are being prepared. The large cabinets adjoining the study area provide plentiful storage space for things such as school bags, golf clubs and other personal belongings, ensuring the kitchen and surrounding spaces remain tidy and uncluttered at all times.”

“The homeowners requested a kitchen which would be functional as well as complementary to their stunning north Adelaide home”

“Their vision included a modern kitchen with extensive storage, a bar area, and a selection of Prestige appliances. Sea Pearl quartz benchtops were selected as the main feature of this kitchen. Sea Pearl quartz splashbacks and a stainless-steel cooktop were included to complement this. Fully choked Studio Barrel oak veneer was chosen for the cabinetry to accompany the existing Tasmanian oak timber floor. The soft curves of the Calacatta marble oval dining table and Infiniti Loop 3D chairs are mimicked by the stunning curves of the KWC Zoe mixer tap, creating a calming influence while highlighting the sharp, sleek mitred edges throughout the space. These elements have combined to create a sophisticated, sleek kitchen which will remain the centrepiece of this stunning home for years to come.”
