Dreary, dated and ill-suited to the way modern families live, the old kitchen in this East Geelong home was in dire need of a complete update.

A more contemporary look was needed, as was better space utilisation and increased storage to ensure the young family had a warm and inviting, supremely practical kitchen that would see them through the coming years.

The existing bathrooms were equally overdue for a makeover and while the owners didn’t want to precisely replicate the look of the kitchen, it was important that the palette of colours and materials employed created a sense of cohesion and connection.

Naylor Builders

When the owners approached Naylor Builders, they had already drawn up their design and selected their finishes. This was to include timber textures for cabinetry and splashes of green tile to conjure a fresh, back-to-nature vibe.

The kitchen cabinets are a mix of VJ-style white panelling and timber finishes. The tall cabinets to the left of the splashback and the island cabinetry feature a rich walnut-like woodgrain. The white-panelled wall to the right conceals abundant storage and boasts a circular recessed handle design.

The large central island features a Caesarstone Alpine Mist countertop, its cool-grey background patterned with delicate white veins and darker flecks of grey. This works beautifully with the timber panelling underneath. Ushering in even more storage space, each end of the island incorporates built-in open shelving.

A light-stone countertop runs along the back wall, paired with a green textured tile splashback that adds earthy character and depth – an effect enhanced by the view of treetops through the windows.

In the bathrooms, timber vanities reference the woodgrain that brings so much warmth to the renovated kitchen. Green-hued feature tiles, paired with stone-look wall and floor tiles, enrich the spaces and conjure a serene, natural aura.

What was once a dark and enclosed kitchen has been completely transformed by the expert team at Naylor Builders. It’s now a vibrant, light-filled space that’s truly the heart of the home.

With minimal natural light and little functional storage, the original kitchen wasn’t suited to the homeowners’ lifestyle. With a clear vision and hands-on involvement from the homeowners, Naylor Buildings brought the homeowners’ dream kitchen to life. Central to the design was opening up the space and maximising natural light. This has been achieved beautifully with a large skylight and window splashback that allow sunlight to flood the kitchen. The hero island bench provides plenty of space for food prep as well as seating for casual meals.

Additional design highlights include timeless Shaker-style cabinetry in the calming shade of Spinifex, and a generous oversized farmhouse sink paired with minimalist yet functional tapware. Take note of the walk-in pantry – it was ingeniously created from what was once just a cupboard. Despite challenging the angled wall configurations, the expert team built this special addition with precision to give the homeowners some much needed extra storage space.

Modern features are incorporated throughout, ensuring the space will remain contemporary.
This area is now ideal for everyday living and weekend entertaining. A fresh, functional kitchen that balances character and comfort with clever use of space – what more could you want for the heart of your home?

Naylor Builders has delivered a stunning kitchen build that epitomises modern living, combining sleek design, functional storage, and an inviting atmosphere.

Located on a small block, the owners desired a kitchen with clean lines, an abundance of natural light, and a harmonious blend of whites, blacks, and soft accent colours. Their vision centred on creating a space that was both visually striking and ultra-functional, perfect for entertaining and family life.

The heart of the design is the expansive 60mm stone island benchtop, made from AC Stone’s Storm Clouds, which provides ample space for prep work, casual meals, and gathering. The stone’s dramatic veining contrasts beautifully with the high-gloss black cabinetry, creating
a striking yet elegant aesthetic. The cascading open wine racks add a touch of sophistication while serving as both a functional and decorative feature. The island, paired with a functional bar area, is designed for seamless entertaining, allowing guests to easily move between
the kitchen and lounge areas.

Storage was a key consideration in the design process, with a pull-out pantry and ample cabinetry integrated throughout the kitchen, ensuring that everything has a place and can be kept within easy reach. The owners also requested a butler’s pantry that flowed naturally into the kitchen, creating an open-plan feel throughout the home. This thoughtful design element ensures the space remains connected, from the kitchen to the laundry and dining area, despite the compact layout.

Naylor Builders

To complement the sleek design, the colour palette includes soft hues and earthy tones, adding warmth and creating an inviting atmosphere. The space feels bright and airy yet has a moody undertone, thanks to the high-contrast joinery and carefully chosen materials. These choices not only elevate the visual appeal but also contribute to the kitchen’s practicality, with surfaces that are easy to clean and maintain.
