The Australian Government has recently announced a one-off, $25,000 tax-free grant to eligible owner occupiers who enter into a building contract by 31 December 2020. Are you eligible? Is now the perfect time to be building? Read more below

If you’ve been putting off that renovation or new build, there’s never been a better time to do it. The new Home Builder Grant is the perfect opportunity for those planning on building their dream home or carrying out major construction work on their existing house. Better still, this scheme is open to all buyers, not just first home buyers. For first home buyers, the Home Builder Grant allows them to enter the property market sooner, but for others it can give a stimulus boost to those considering constructing a new home to live in, as well as help recent bushfire victims to rebuild.

Of course, while the $25,000 Home Builder Grant is a huge help to those looking to build or renovate, there are still price and income caps – and it’s only available for the latter half of the year. Whether you’re looking for your first home, wanting to upsize, rebuild, or downsize in retirement, Clarendon Homes has a range of home solutions that meet the HomeBuilder grant criteria.

First, make sure you qualify for the Home Builder Grant

You must be an Australian citizen and owner-occupier. The grant is also means tested. Singles must earn less than $125,000 a year, or $200,000 for couples.

The grant is only for your principle place of residence. Investment properties do not qualify.

Home builders and renovators are excluded, and only builders registered and licensed before the announcement of the scheme can participate.

Next, ensure the value of your new home fits within the targets

For new home builds, there’s a house and land price cap of $750,000.

For renovations, you’ll need to spend between $150,000 and $750,000 on an existing home previously valued at less than $1.5 million. Renovations must be for your main house only. Swimming pools, tennis courts and shed are not eligible. Notably, the scheme has measures in place to stop artificial price hikes and ensure you’re getting the best deal.

How to apply for the Home Builder Grant?

Applications for the grant will be handled by the State or Territory revenue office in which you live (or plan to live in). In New South Wales, the grant can be applied for via Revenue NSW (more information is available here via their website).

You’ll need to provide proof of your identity, a copy of the contract with your licensed builder, your tax returns and other property documents such as council approvals and building contracts.

Are there other NSW home grants that I may be eligible for?

If you are a first home buyer, you can use the Home Builder Grant with other grants and schemes on offer to you! This will go a long way to helping you on your building journey.

The $25,000 HomeBuilder grant can be used alongside existing State and Territory first home owner grant programs, stamp duty concessions, and other grant schemes including the Federal Government’s first home loan deposit scheme and first home super saver scheme.

How do I learn more about the Home Builder Grant?

With such a new grant scheme, you’re sure to have many questions. Feel free to speak with one of our Clarendon Homes representatives who will help guide you through the process.

You can also find the latest up-to-date information on the HomeBuilder grant and application process on the Australian Government’s Treasury website.

Remember, the one-off $25,000 grant is time limited. If you’re eligible, take a moment to explore our house, and home and land packages. You run the risk of missing out if you don’t apply soon and get your building contracts signed in time.

The Reno + Design Show is the most recent local event to officially announce their postponement

Brisbane Renovation + Design Event Postponed

The team behind the much-anticipated Brisbane Reno + Design Show have sadly postponed their upcoming April event due to increasing Coronavirus concerns.

Upon deciding that the risk to public health from hosting a major event in this difficult time is unjustifiably high, the design and renovation event has been moved to the new date of August 29-30, 2020.

This decision came just hours before the official statement from the Australian Government advising against mass gatherings was made.

“We know that the health and wellbeing of our community is of paramount importance,” said event director, Renee Watson. “Our thoughts are with all of those who have sadly been affected by the illness.”

Interior addicts, design devotees and those with the home reno bug will be spoilt for choice when over 100 designers, architects, stylists, home builders, trades, product suppliers and special guests from around the country come together for the second annual Reno + Design Show, this time for the new dates of August 29-30, 2020.

Over the two new days, visitors will have the chance to talk face-to-face with exhibitors, gain practical experience at interactive workshops and styling sessions, and learn more about home renovation and design through panel discussions and Q&A events with a who’s who of design gurus.

Competition prizes will now be valid for the new dates of 29-30 August, 2020.

Voting opens as National Tiles announces 10 competition finalists

The competition received over 500 distinct entries from a range of nominees across all states and territories. Although the judging team were impressed by and would like to congratulate all entrants, the ten finalists were decided upon the basis of the judges’ strict criteria.

KATE WALKER – KWD:

1. Attention to detail, with elements like tile set outs, waste position, full height tile finish to important areas
2. Level of difficulty with types of tiles laid (ie handmade/mosaics/stone)
3. Look at mitre details, not using tile trim for example

CAMRON WHITTAKER – NATIONAL TILES:

1. Extensive use of tile in a project or in a unique application
2. Attention to detail in cutting and shaping, fitting and set out
3. Over and above promotion of long life tile installations; including the use of Epoxy Grouting For Stainless Grout, Underfloor Heating, or Built In Floor Protection Matts

ANGELA YOUNG – GDA:

1. Aesthetic appeal of the whole space, including quality of lay and attention to detail
2. Suitability for the space – from an aesthetic and a practical point of view
3. Originality – innovative use of tiles within a design not typically seen

As a supporter of the profession and a major sponsor of the HALT Brekky to raise awareness of mental health issues among tradies, National Tiles and Grand Designs Australia aim to use the Tiler of the Year Awards as a platform to promote recognition to hardworking tilers while encouraging homeowners to nominate the great work they have done.

By voting, homeowners, friends and family, tradespeople and employers will help recognise the great work tilers do while providing themselves with the chance to win a KWD Access design package with official judge and leading Australian designer Kate Walker.

Only months after launching in the US market, Zip HydroTap has been named as Kitchen Product of the Year at the Kitchen & Bath Business Product Innovator Awards in the US

Us Industry Awards Name Zip Hydrotap As Kitchen Product Of The Year

The judges at the Kitchen & Bath Business Product Innovator Awards were impressed by the superior product innovation that goes into each and every Zip HydroTap.

Known as the world’s most advanced drinking water system, the Zip HydroTap transforms the way people in over 76 countries drink and cook by dispensing pure-tasting instant boiling, chilled and sparkling, all at the touch of a button.

Zip’s MicroPurity filtration ensures drinking water is pure-tasting by reducing sediment, volatile organic compounds like lead and parasites such as cryptosporidium and giardia greater than 0.2 microns, without removing beneficial fluoride.

This is the second major award for Zip HydroTap in the US, having previously received a silver award in the kitchen category at the largest Kitchen and Bathroom show in North America earlier this year.

The US embracing Zip HydroTap is great news for the environment. Americans buy around 50 billion plastic water bottles every year and only recycle about 23 per cent of those – Zip HydroTap eliminates the need to buy single-use plastic bottles.

In an industry first, National Tiles and Grand Designs Australia, in partnership with their sponsors, have recently launched the inaugural Tiler of the Year Awards 2020

As a supporter of the profession and a major sponsor of the HALT Brekky to raise awareness of mental health issues among tradies, National Tiles and Grand Designs Australia aim to provide recognition to hardworking tilers while encouraging homeowners to nominate the great work they have done.

“We are passionate about tiles, and without the incredible talent of hardworking Australian tilers our industry could not exist. It requires a skilled artisan who takes pride in their work to create a beautifully finished tiled floor, wall, splashback, shower and outdoor paving area,” a spokesperson for National Tiles says.

“Tiled correctly, these spaces will stand the test of time. It’s a tough job, too – painstaking, back-breaking and physically demanding. So, we want to send out a collective heartfelt thank you to all of the amazing tilers who work so hard for their clients in residential and commercial projects, from Darwin to Hobart and from Perth to the east coast – we couldn’t do what we do without you.”

The nominations period when homeowners, tilers and clients are encouraged to upload photos of their favourite tilers’ work, will commence on 21 November and run until 5 March. After this, the competition’s judging panel – Kate Walker (Director, KWD), Cameron Whittaker (GM of Product and Procurement, National Tiles) and Angela Young (Editor, Grand Designs Australia Magazine), will choose 10 finalists to be voted on.

These finalists will be announced on 12 March and photographs will be uploaded to the Voting App so everyone can vote for their favourite space.

The finalists will be invited to attend a very special event in Melbourne where the winner and runners-up will be announced. The winner will be featured in the July issue of Grand Designs Australia (entry applicants will need to be available for a photo shoot for this feature).

Milan Design Week was the perfect time for Caesarstone to present the fruits of their year-long collaboration with world-renowned Spanish designer Jaime Hayon

Inspired by flora, fauna and folklore from across the world, Hayon used Caesarstone as his medium in designing an architectural pavilion that alludes to the famous Crystal Palace built for the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde Park, London. Hayon used over 40 Caesarstone colours, as well as metals and stained glass, to bring his vision to life for 2017’s Milan Design Week.

Employing traditional stone marquetry and stained glass window techniques, Hayon meticulously implanted caesarstone into the metal frame of the pavilion to create a wondrous tapestry inspired by nature, the animal kingdom, and cultural myths ranging from Hungarian folklore to African tribal influences. Hayon is well-known for his clown face works and these feature prominently alongside tribal masks, handcrafted furniture pieces and unique light fixtures.

For the Milan Design Week exhibition, Hayon aims to use the materials to create a kaleidoscopic feel and allow visitors to playfully interact with the installation in a fresh and unexpected way.

Raanan Zilberman, CEO of Caesarstone, believed Jaime Hayon’s use of the quartz medium reflected the changing landscape of the kitchen and the limitless possibilities of Caesarstone in the home.

“The kitchen space is continuing its journey to the centre of the home and, what used to be the family’s meeting point, is turning out to be a ‘future living room”, a place where we entertain and host. As such, I feel that the kitchen space will become more expressive and personal and we will see designers and consumers’ increasing adoption of maximalism and material richness to confer a unique and personal look and feel to the kitchen.

“We are inspired by the visionary work of Jaime and the way this demonstrates the ‘boundless boundaries’ of our materials and their application.”

By Alex Dalland

Milan Design Week, also known as the Salone del Mobile Milano, is the design event that sets trends across the world. With the exhibition already attracting enormous attention on social media, we look at five of the most stunning pieces from this year’s design week to light up our Instagram

1. This new Tama Living sofa from Walter Knoll

The Tama Living sofa opts for a sleek low-profile setting, and was designed by EOOS to mimic “a piece of classical music” in furniture form. The sofa is sold upholstered in leather or fabric with saddle leather side tables which double as arm rests, as well as a practical tray which fits into the sofa itself. Milan Design Week is often known for its ultra avant-garde statement pieces, but this fabulous sofa is just one example of a debut piece that fits just as well into the Salone as it would in your own home.

2. The brilliant “Floating on water” installation from Hermes home

Hermes are known for making a splash at Milan Design Week, and 2017 is proving to be no exception – literally! Once again, the brand’s iconic “Collections for the Home” debuts its new range at the Salone, showcasing a clean-cut cast bronze coffee table by British design studio Barber Osgerby. The collection’s suspension in water helps to embody to the weightless aesthetic of the table.

3. A “brutalist” marble grandfather clock from Lee Broom

Gorgeous Carrera marble grandfather clock designed by #leebroom #milandesignweek2017 #venturacentrale

A post shared by Royce Epstein (@madame_duchamp) on

Already taking design circles by storm around the world, British designer Lee Broom’s celebration of 10 years in the business is the striking ‘Time Machine’ grandfather clock, hand-crafted from a single piece of Carrara marble. Broom himself has said that the style of the clock, remeniscent of ‘brutalist’ architecture, is meant to contradict the traditionalist associations normally held with grandfather clocks. As well as exhibiting the ‘Time Machine’ at Milan Design Week, he is also selling the pieces in a limited run of 10 – one for every year he has been designing.

4. This sphere of greenery from the IKEA festival

Home giant IKEA has hit Milan this year with a bang, creating its own festival (IKEA Festival – Let’s Make Room For Life) to run alongside Milan Design Week. As well as unveiling some new designs, conceptual room layouts and curated interiors from the IKEA Livet Hemma blog, the festival also hosts some more unusual art installations and even sculptures made from IKEA furniture.

5. Pedro Franco’s “Underconstruction” sofa

A veteran of Milan Design Week – having participated for the past 10 years – Franco is known for his unique chair designs and has almost become the face of Brazilian design, with one media outlet dubbing him “The ambassador of Brazilian design” (Platinum Magazine, 2015). Franco’s latest collections, such as the pictured “Underconstruction” sofa, examine introducing the handmade into the industrial process, with newer works combining elements of both traditional furniture making and the manufacturing process. This particular sofa was originally shown at the 2009 Satellite Hall as part of the design week, however it has made a comeback at the 2017 Milan Design Week as part of the “A Lot of Brasil” stand.
