Technology is all about making life simpler, and this Spectacular Ocean-View Pool and spa were constructed on the same level as the residence, creating an amazing feature visible from the living areas. But perhaps the most impressive aspect is that you can swim in the Spectacular Ocean-View Pool, relax in the spa and feel like you could reach out and touch the ocean below. This effect is created by a negative edge along the front of the Spectacular Ocean-View Pool, allowing the pool water to meet the horizon and vast ocean.

The residence was already built and is located high up on the sloping block. “The slope of the block was the biggest issue with the construction of the Spectacular Ocean-View Pool and spa,” explains Trent Cantwell of Cantwell Pools. “Overall, the pool sits approximately 3.3m above the ground level below. Not only is the Spectacular Ocean-View Pool totally boxed out of the ground to be level with the outdoor area, but a complete structure also needed to be built with retaining walls to create a base for the Spectacular Ocean-View Pool to be built on.

“Working in conjunction with the builder, architect and owner was key to ensure that correct levels were achieved so that the Spectacular Ocean-View Pool is the same level as the outdoor entertaining area.”

Block walls 1.8m high were built to support all internal and external walls of the Spectacular Ocean-View Pool and spa. Additional piers were required inside the block walls to support the floor.

For the interior, coloured glass mosaic tiles were carefully selected by the owners so that the Spectacular Ocean-View Pool water is not only its own feature but also complements the colour of the ocean. The coping and spillway are finished in a grey porcelain large tile, and the other external walls in a grey render.

When it came time to finish the trough interior and spillway wall, the tilers had to work inside the trough with limited room. Access was only from the Spectacular Ocean-View Pool above into the trough, 1.8m above the ground. Laying of the coping around the trough beam had to be completed after tiling, again from inside the trough with very limited room.

All equipment is of the highest standard and quality possible, and includes a larger-sized filter, pumps, and heater. Separate pumps have been used for the negative edge and solar heating. Meanwhile, the Astral equilibrium salt chlorinator ensures the water is always crystal clear. Spa Electrics niche recessed multi-coloured LED lights illuminate the Spectacular Ocean-View Pool.

Total automation of all equipment is achieved by an Astral Viron Connect 10 pool remote control system, and even the pool’s water level is topped up automatically all year round by a Water Witch.

Cantwell Pools has been creating pools, spas, and tennis courts in Victoria for more than 20 years. The company has developed a reputation for producing the highest-quality results on all projects, from modest backyard dreams to majestic landscape visions. Cantwell Pools is a registered pool builder and a member of both the Swimming Pool and Spa Association (SPASA) and the Sports Contractors Association.

Sometimes it’s the subtle, carefully considered details that add true definition. Such is the case in this sophisticated ocean-inspired kitchen by Rina Cohen of RCI Designs.

Choosing to complement, rather than compete with, the spectacular coastal views and surrounds that formed a backdrop to the home, she opted for minimalist joinery in Briggs natural oak veneer and Polytec Feldspar Shimmer to form the foundation of the ocean-inspired  kitchen.

At first glance, the two-tone effect is striking yet simple, but a closer inspection exposes another level of detail — in the window splashback, the fish tank, the matt textured bar stools, the blue-green palette of the walk-through scullery and laundry, the raised dishwasher, the Koda Vibia pendant light and the downdraft extractor, specifically chosen to cater to the clients’ desire to eschew overhead cabinetry.

It is perhaps the island that captures the imagination the most, though. Intended to represent a forming wave, it combines a slab of natural Verde Fantastico velvet granite, featuring the colours of the ocean, suspended on a sensuous curve sculpted out of Staron in the colour Steel.

The solid surface arc serves to outline the “wave” while also softening the harder edges of the room, and the scullery entrance, adding a powerful sculptural element all its own. Meanwhile, high-quality integrated appliances and discreet chrome tapware and finishes balance the practical requirements of the zone, establishing it as a place of form and function.

An Ocean Inspired Holiday Home Renovation with Beachside Appeal https://www.completehome.com.au/renovations/the-dreamy-ocean-inspired-holiday-home-bursting-with-beachside-appeal.html Thu, 17 Feb 2022 01:52:30 +0000 https://www.completehome.com.au/?p=66091 The revitalisation of this 22 year old Surfers Paradise unit, which is mostly used for holiday letting.

The revitalisation of this 22 year old Surfers Paradise unit, which is mostly used for holiday letting. renovation success

Smith & Sons Gold Coast Central was the builder responsible for the revitalisation of this Surfers Paradise unit, which is mostly used for holiday letting. Looking to completely renovate the 22-year-old unit, the owners — retirees from Melbourne — are enthusiastic travellers who use the unit as a holiday retreat. As such, they opted for a calm coastal interior aesthetic that welcomes Quantum Quartz Ultra White 20mm benchtops and Laminex Aquamarine laminate in the Bosch-equipped kitchen. Truly a holiday home renovation success with a beachside appeal.

“Located in a beachfront building, it was important that the unit reflected the subtropical beach feel and lifestyle of the Gold Coast. Brave colours were chosen for cabinetry and benchtops and these choices paid off when furnishings were added,” says Neil Whittred, builder and owner of Smith & Sons Gold Coast Central. “Our team completely renovated the unit, which consists of two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a sitting room and open-plan kitchen, living and dining space. The sitting room can now be closed off by Luxaflex plantation shutters to create a temporary third bedroom, and all general living floors were tiled with timber-look tiles.” To support the bifold plantation shutters in the sitting room, Smith & Sons has cleverly constructed a bulkhead between the existing bulkheads.

renovation success story

The timber plank tiled floors are the standout, particularly when combined with the beautiful plantation shutters. In the bathroom, Calacatta matt floor tiles collide with high-gloss rectified wall tiles and custom vanities for a five-star bathing experience. Energy-efficient lighting and fans reduce power bills and minimise the building’s impact on the environment. “With no interior designer in sight, the finished product is a standout for a relatively low-cost unit renovation,” concludes Neil.

“Drama and glamour were must-have elements in this new kitchen. Created as part of a substantial home extension, the homeowners wanted a kitchen that offered ample entertainment areas while fulfilling the practical needs of preparing and cooking the family’s meals.

The materials and colours had to be considered carefully to create a beautiful work zone that filled the large open space while providing a functional layout. Three islands and two rear wall runs characterise the space, featuring Staron® Solid Surfaces throughout. The central hub consists of a circular table with a Staron® tabletop that is backlit to create a glowing feature. Allure and a sense of opulence are achieved by the use of an oversized pendant light that hovers above the table. The adjoining island units snugly surround the table with their curved form, drawing your eyes towards this central feature. Designed for subtle practicality, the cooktop and cleaning zones are concealed behind joinery, also bringing your attention to the table area — the focal point within the large space. Being big entertainers, the clients required a benchtop that would be durable and generate impact; Staron® Solid Surfaces was the perfect solution for this project as we were able to provide large island tops with no open joins. The illuminative nature of Staron® also enhances the feature table. The Ocean View colour was selected for its texture and warm tones to complement the striking timber veneer and copper accents. The end result is one of glowing glamour that brings different materials together in perfect harmony.”

Designer: Tania Kloester for TK Design

EXPERT TIP: Accentuate the space with a carefully chosen benchtop that will tie the room together.

We love the repeated use of the Ocean View surface by Staron®.
