It’s all in the detail | How to properly plan your pool location, design and equipment to improve your property and lifestyle.

The pool industry has never been busier, with many pool builders fully booked for the next six to eight months. Over the last three years there has been huge demand for residential swimming pools, in addition to other investments in the home. A properly planned pool will bring years of enjoyment for your family and guests as well as increase the value of your property. Here are a few must haves for your new pool that should be considered and included at the planning stages.

The right location

What’s the access point from house to pool? This is important if you don’t want dripping kids and friends walking through your house. Also think about when and where the sun will be hitting your pool. You want some sunlight to keep the pool water warm and to make swimming enjoyable, so consider a north-facing location that gets plenty of sun. Generally four hours per day is ideal.

The right size

Think about how big you want your pool to be. Will it grow with your family? Will it be too much work to maintain? Is there still room for the kids to kick a ball around in the yard?

The right lighting

Whether it’s stylish and simple or multicoloured fun, the right pool lighting will make all the difference.

The right heating

Solar can extend the swimming season — if you get sun, that is! But a heat pump gives you real control to choose the temperature you want, when you want it, any time of the year.

The cleanest, healthiest, swimmable water

There is nothing better than coming home from a long day at work and jumping in your pool for a refreshing dip in clean, healthy, swimmable water. To help pool owners manage that, Davey’s new Wi-Fi-enabled pool chemistry controller, called Lifeguard, is just the thing. Lifeguard offers simple pool water management, right from your phone. With Lifeguard, sanitisation, pH and acid dosing, even pool temperature can all be automated, and the app will let you know if you are running low on salt or minerals and when you need to check the acid drum. No more surprises when you go to use your pool!

Why you should ask for Davey

Davey is an iconic Australian business that has been delivering innovative pool products for over 88 years. From heat pumps to chlorinators and a range of heavy-duty pool pumps to suit any pool needs, big or small, if you are looking for a brand you can trust to deliver the best pool experience, and the best products for your pool, you can depend on Davey.

The range of options to build the pool of your dreams is increasing all the time from in-ground or above, concrete or fibreglass to infinity edge or lap pool.

Indeed, wanting to have a pool is one thing and building it is a different story altogether. But don’t stress 🙂 Education has always been key and to make things a whole lot easier for you, we’ve gathered everything you need to know and consider so you can make the best decision to build your own backyard haven:

  • Your Reason For Getting One

Everything should start with why. You are more likely to make the proper selection about the size, shape, and kind of swimming pool if you have a good purpose for starting construction. So ask yourself, what is it really that you’re going to use this pool for?

Is it for…

  • Exercise
  • Entertaining
  • Recreation
  • Relaxing
  • Backyard enhancement

There’s so many pool options out there to suit your needs. Even when you have a sloping block or a small backyard, there are solutions available like a Freestanding Plunge Pool.

You can even add a spa if you want. Most Australians enjoy pool time, but having the added luxury of a spa will undoubtedly help you unwind and relax, in addition to numerous wellness benefits.

Relaxing at pool

  • The Location

Another crucial factor to consider is the area where you will install the pool. Not only does this affect the size, shape, and depth of your pool but also your budget. Remember that the type of surface you have in your location has an impact on its suitability. Installing a pool in rugged terrain, for example, is more expensive than on a flat surface. Similarly, if you reside in a rocky area, you will spend more money because excavation will require heavy machinery.

Swimming pools are cheaper to construct on a level site, so building costs will be higher if your block slopes steeply. Ground conditions such as a high water table or extremely sandy, rocky, or unstable soil will also make construction more difficult especially when it rains.

It is because of this reason pool builders and designers recommend getting your pool shell in before building a house. But if your house is already constructed and you just want to add a pool to maybe increase its value or to build an outdoor oasis, then the best you can do is ensure the area will be suitable for the construction.

A good pool builder will design your pool to accommodate the site conditions, which are always unique! The type of soil, underground services, proximity to structures, site elevations, trees, and, of course, the surrounding integration and landscaping vision must all be considered.

To help you decide where to place your pool, here are some key elements to take into account:

  • Sight lines: Your view of the pool and the rest of the garden from inside the house. It will be more appealing if lighting or water features are added. If you have children, it’s crucial to see the pool from your home.
  • Sun exposure: Does the location get enough sun to keep the water warm? Large trees can shade the water and drop leaves into it.
  • Wind exposure: Cools the water and causes it to evaporate more. To provide shelter, plant or construct screens.
  • Accessibility: Concerns how people will enter and exit the pool. Where will you spend your time around the pool?
  • Storage: Where will you store the filtration equipment, pool cleaner, toys, and sun umbrellas?

Gorgeous Swimming pool

Pool shape and depth, size, ledges, retaining walls, feature walls, spas, glass window panels, pavilion slabs, and fencing configurations are all important factors to consider.

Every pool, as well as any intended hard surface areas like extended concrete surrounds and slabs, will require permit permission from the local government or a private certifier, as well as your state water board.

Designing a pool to meet rules is a major responsibility, and in most situations, you’ll want to plan the entire backyard at the same time, so that all of the hard surfaces are plotted and authorised without having to halt work and reapply.

Pool construction can only begin once all necessary approvals have been obtained. The approval procedure varies greatly, with some local governments requiring months to complete. You may be able to hire a private certifier, which is much faster, depending on where you live and the type of pool you have.

  • Cost

A swimming pool is a valuable investment that can increase a home’s selling price anywhere between the $100 – $200K price bracket. In fact,  85% of home buyers believe that a pool will add value to their new home, with 42% admitting that a pool is a deciding factor when purchasing a property.

And so, it stands to reason that a swimming pool is an investment that pays for itself.

To give you an idea, a typical concrete pool usually ranges between $35,000 to $100,000 upfront but there are pool builders who offer great deals in the market. If you want to score a really good deal, you can consider buying pool packages online that already include benefits and features such as pebble interior lining and heating provisions.

Also, there’s actually a scenario where you don’t need to spend a single dollar to build a fabulous pool in your own backyard. If you have a home loan and you’ve been trying to save money so you can start sunbaking by your own pool this summer, stop right now.

There’s a better way.

Our boss lady, Remonda, is here to help you with refinancing the mortgage on your home to allow you to open up a huge number of possibilities, including shortening the life of your loan, reducing your repayments and allowing you to use the equity in your home to renovate.

  • Concrete or Fibreglass?

A swimming pool is likely to be one of the most valuable personal investments you will ever make in your home, and when it comes to installing one, the most common dilemma for property owners is deciding between concrete and fibreglass.

The truth is that there is no clear winner between the two, and it all comes down to which will best suit your needs. Concrete is popular among homeowners who value the design and overall appearance of their pool because it is highly customisable.

While concrete pools take longer to install, with an average completion time of 3 to 6 months versus 3 to 6 weeks for fibreglass, they give you complete control over everything from the look and shape to colour and custom additions like ledges. If you want a natural poolscape with waterline tiles, concrete is also a good option.

When it comes to construction and installation, the costs of a fiberglass swimming pool and a concrete pool are vastly different. Both are high-quality, durable materials. However, building a concrete pool will cost more because it takes much longer to construct, which means you will have trades on-site for a longer period of time.

Filtration systems, heating, lighting, and additional landscaping (e.g. decking) will make the most difference in price between two pools. These options are generally the same for both concrete and fibreglass, so their presence does not directly affect the price — depending on the add-ons, either material could be cheaper or more expensive.

When installed and finished, both concrete and fibreglass pools look fantastic, and most people will be unable to tell the difference. The real difference in appearance and design comes from concrete’s ability to be built in any shape or size you desire, whereas fibreglass pools are only available in factory-made models.

The pool’s feel may also vary depending on the options you select. Because of the gel coating applied over the raw fibreglass, fibreglass pools have a very smooth finish. Concrete pools are typically plastered or tiled, making them slightly rougher underfoot than fibreglass pools but providing a better grip.

  • Your Choice of Pool Builder

Why you should get your pool shell in before the house build begins

If you’ve decided to install a pool in your home, you’ll understand how important it is to select the right builder. Choosing the right builder will save you time, money, and stress because the job will be done correctly.

Any construction project, including pool construction, might have unexpected costs or setbacks. It’s critical to pick a reputed pool builder if you want your pool to be the finest hangout location for your friends and family. One thing you can do is ask colleagues who own pools for recommendations or search the web for the best pool builders in your area and read customer feedback.

If you’re coming up short on personal recommendations, we recommend checking with the Swimming Pool & Spa Association of Australia (SPASA).

Also, it’s important to note that pool builders often specialise in one type of pool. Concrete and fibreglass pools are the two most common types, and most pool builders specialise in one or the other.

For example, if a pool business exclusively installs fibreglass pools, they’ll limit their opinion/quote to a fibreglass pool rather than the best and most cost-effective solution for your home when they assess your property. The worst kind of bias is hidden bias.

Seek a second opinion or find a pool builder that specialises in both fibreglass and concrete pools. You can be sure you’re receiving the best pool for your space rather than the finest pool for their commission.

How to choose the right pool builder?

Check that the builder’s licence is current and that they are eligible for Home Owners Warranty, which provides government protection if the builder is unable to fulfil the contract due to illness or liquidation. Having a valid policy in place for anything over $20,000 protects you both during the construction process and during the statutory warranty period. Blue Haven Pools is proud to offer insurance on all contracts worth more than $20,000.

Your contractor should be able to confidently explain the payment process for your pool installation, including all costs. If your builder uses complicated terminology or cannot explain why and for what they are charging you, it is likely that they are deceiving you. Your builder should also be able to walk you through your contract with confidence, informing you of your obligations and risks before you sign and pay.

Be wary of builders who charge a high upfront fee for things like tipping, fencing, power, and all the other costs associated with pool construction that would be much less expensive if you dealt directly with quality local trades like your local fencing contractor or electrician.

  • Pool Maintenance

Long-term maintenance costs do introduce some price variation. Concrete pools are more prone to algae growth, necessitating more frequent cleaning and chemical treatment. Concrete can also wear out faster, necessitating more frequent repairs. These differences, however, are measured over decades, so don’t get too hung up on them.

Pool maintenance can consume up to 30% of a household’s annual energy budget. If you plan to sell your home in the future, it’s a good idea to have an energy-efficient pool, which is usually the main concern of homebuyers.

Blue Haven pioneered the EnviroSmart Mineral Pool over ten years ago, which features cutting-edge equipment that ensures the purest mineral water possible all day long, benefits the environment, and reduces maintenance costs. We help homeowners save approximately $800 in power, 12,000 litres of water, and 80 per cent less in pool operational costs each year through this innovation.

The good news is that you are not required to use Blue Haven as your builder in order to purchase this technology. This can also be used to replace your existing pool filtering system.

Fencing

  • Fencing

Every Australian state requires residential swimming pools and spa pools to be fenced by law. Although an Australian Standard applies to pool fences across the country, each state and territory government has its own laws and permits to ensure that every pool fence complies with the standard.

The most common misconception about swimming pool barriers is that they are shared with your neighbour. Current Australian standards require boundary barriers to be 1800mm high, with the NCZ or clear area measured on the inside of the barrier.

Furthermore, retaining walls, objects, or level changes within a property that would otherwise reduce the height of a barrier must be at least 500 mm away from the barrier.

Climbable barriers, trees, shrubs, pool filtration equipment, and garden sheds are examples of non-compliant objects. These objects are frequently required to be moved or modified.

To protect your pool from possible damages and to restrict unauthorised entry and ensure pool fence compliance, be sure to keep these things on your checklist to achieve proper compliance:

  • Install an approved CPR sign inside the pool area. Most choose the shallow end of the pool.
  • Check your pool gate is self-closing and that the gate opens outwards from the pool.
  • Look over if there are no gaps under the fence that exceed 100mm.
  • Check the height of the latching mechanism – it should be 1500mm above the ground.
  • Ensure that your pool fences are 1200mm high measured from outside the fence from the ground level or any surface within 500mm of the fencing.
  • Look for climbing hazards outside your fences and remove them – this includes pots, furniture and fixed structures that should be relocated out of the climb zone.
  • Remove trees, hedges and vegetation. They can be used to climb.
  • If there is a Boundary Fence as a part of the enclosure, it must be 1800mm high and completely free of climb points.
  • Keep other activities out of the pool enclosure – no clothesline, no BBQ or dining, no trampoline or cubby house.
  • Glass fences will need a glazing certificate provided to the certifier to ensure the right quality of glass has been used and is not likely to explode in the future.
  • There are to be no doors or windows opening from the dwelling or other outbuildings entering the pool area.
  • No vegetation or obstructions must be seen within a 900mm arc from the top of the boundary fence within the pool area.

NCZ Boundary Fence Compliance

While rules must be followed, your pool fence does not have to be boring. There are a variety of sultry pool fence designs available today that will allow you to not only meet safety requirements but also improve the overall aesthetic appeal of your backyard.

You can keep it simple with a steel pole fence, be stylish with a glass pool fence, or choose the ever dependable old metal that’s sturdy and easy to clean. If you want to give your pool a stylish and one-of-a-kind appearance, a laser-cut screen is an excellent choice. It can also be made to almost any design and to meet the Australian Pool Safety Standards (AS1926.1 – 2012).

You can add a natural finish to Jarrah sleepers, a type of Australian tropical hardwood, and install them at slightly varying heights for a completely different approach to pool fencing.

  • What Will Go Around It

Did you know that you’ll spend about 20% of your time in the pool and the other 80% by the pool?

We spend a lot of time by the pool, whether we’re sunbathing, reading a book, listening to music, chatting with family and friends, or having a BBQ. That’s why you should really consider what goes around your pool including landscaping, plants, and furniture. They are what make your pool stand out!

They also set the tone in a room that will quickly become your haven. There’s a lot to consider: lighting, furniture, fire torches, umbrellas, greenery, poolside pavilion, deck chairs, and so on.

Setting aside the same amount of money for landscaping and furnishings as you do for the pool itself is an easy way to budget for the finishing touches. If you’re looking for the best pool accessories for ultimate fun during the summer season, you can look into enjoyable floating amenities and exciting floats to spice things up.

Aside from the fun accessories and toys, keep a separate area for essentials such as pool chemicals and emergency supplies. When you need to access a specific element, having accessible storage space will help you save energy and time.

There’s something about luxury hotels that makes anyone want to stay and linger for as long as they can. It could be the fancy and intricate design of the hotel’s lounge, reception, and exterior.

Some travellers love the amazing and luxurious scent that fills their noses upon walking into the establishment and its corridors. You also can’t miss the tight security and safety that comes with their sky-high rates.

For some, though, it’s the hotel’s stunning swimming pool that serves as the icing on the cake. After all, it’s the perfect spot for socialising, relaxing, and taking Instagram-worthy photos that you can take with you even after the trip is over. For that reason, the pool is considered the centre and heart of the action of luxury hotels.

You can design or remodel your home pool in a way that will make you feel like spending your leisure time in a five-star hotel. Ready to get started? Check the following tips for upgrades and modifications you can do to your pool at home:

Marina Bay Sands Hotel pool vibe

Highlight the dramatic view to get that Marina Bay Sands Hotel pool vibe

Unless you live in a cave, you surely have heard or seen photos of the jaw-dropping perfection that is Marina Bay Sands. Dubbed as the most expensive hotel ever built, the hotel absolutely doesn’t disappoint in any way, but most notably with its resplendent infinity pool that’s beautifully situated at its rooftop.

You don’t need a rooftop to recreate the same ambience, just as long as you have a dramatic view that you can take advantage of. The zero-edge or infinity pool design is what you ultimately need to get the same vibe as that of Marina Bay Sands’s luxurious pool.

Let your pool create an immersive and stunning experience by complementing the wide horizon of a majestic sea vista or mountain view. An infinity pool is perfect for such a spectacular setting since it allows the water to overflow into a collection trough to create an impression of the water continuing to the sky.

Caesar Palace in Las Vegas

Swim, play games, and feel like royalty the way Caesar Palace in Las Vegas does it

Casino goer or not, you can never resist the luxurious splendour of Caesar Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. You’ll be impressed by the detailed Greco-Romanesque design of this hotel that you can clearly see in its towers, upscale suites, lavish furnishings, opulent villas, and numerous outdoor swimming pools.

What’s good about recreating the same vibe is that you can make it happen regardless of the size of your pool area. A plunge pool, for instance, is perfect for lounging and relaxing no matter what time of the day it is. Fibreglass and inground concrete pools would also be ideal for such a theme.

To get into that Caesar Palace mood, you can install concrete tables for games such as blackjack and beer pong. If you have a flair for Romanesque architecture, you can add Greek and Roman gods statues for an ultimate impression of the Garden of the Gods Pool Oasis in Caesar Palace.

Hanging Gardens of Bali

Create a jungle-like haven that mimics the Hanging Gardens of Bali in Indonesia

Sometimes, luxury doesn’t always mean lavish interiors and grandiose appeal. Your idea of relaxation can also mean getting your fair share of Mother Nature, and perhaps that’s exactly what a stay at the Hanging Gardens of Bali in Bali, Indonesia offers.

Tucked away in the depths of Ubud jungles is this treehouse-inspired luxury resort where you can get a divine taste of relaxation, retreat, and indulgence. But what makes the Hanging Gardens truly exquisite is its suspended rooftop infinity pool that will make your heart skip a beat (or more).

If you don’t live in the mountains or anywhere elevated, don’t worry. You can still create a jungle-like paradise by adding plenty of plants and flowers to your outdoor space. A glass window pool design will be perfect as the focal point of your tropical sanctuary. If you want it to be more customisable according to your preference, you can choose a custom concrete pool for this theme. You can consider hiring a pool landscaping professional to achieve your desired effects, or you may also do it on your own.

Some plant ideas you can add to your list include succulents, ornamental grasses, vines, tropical plants, evergreen hedges, wildflowers, and fragrant plants. A rock garden surrounding your pool is also a fantastic idea that can help create an oasis-like illusion. This idea is perfect for pools with water features such as stepping stones, rocks, water fountains, and other detailed hardscaping.

Your dream pool is just an inspiration away

There’s no longer any need to travel the world when you feel like getting your much-needed retreat. You can recreate the ambience you want by designing your pool area exactly the way you want it to be. Whether it’s a lavish pool rendezvous or a jungle-like haven that you are hoping to have, these tips above can surely help you out. If you need more pool inspo, read this article.

The perfect outdoor space calls for relaxing and entertaining elements, one of which is a swimming pool. If you’ve already decided to have your own pool at home, good for you, and congratulations!

Such addition is an investment that pays for itself. You no longer need to go outside during hot vacation days, and you get to spend more time with your family in the comfort of your own home.

What’s more is that having a pool at home can significantly increase your property’s appeal and value. In fact, according to luxury real estate agent Zed Nasheet of Zed Real Estate, a custom-designed pool can increase a home’s selling price up to $200K. That being said, it pays to take the time, effort, and money to upgrade your outdoor space.

Don’t let your pool clash with your personality (Just saying.)

Now that you’ve decided to buy or install a pool, it’s time to start going through the options you have as far as design, style, size, and material are concerned. Before you go ahead and pick a choice, you might want to back up a little bit and make sure it suits your personality and preferences. After all, your pool is one of the most valuable personal investments and will serve you in more ways than one so designing it according to your wishes is key to making the most of it.

To help you out, here are some of the most popular pool types, styles, and shapes and what they usually say about their owners:

Kidney-bean pool

Kidney-bean

Kidney-bean or kidney-shaped pools are becoming increasingly popular these days. If you have a small backyard or outdoor space, this style will most likely suit your needs. Its freeform shape is flexible yet sophisticated enough to make sure you won’t be sacrificing style at any point.

Going for the kidney-bean pool type could mean that you’re a modern homeowner who doesn’t shy away from contemporary trends. The asymmetrical shape might be an indication that you have a fun personality and that you enjoy entertaining guests at home. A kidney-bean pool also looks satisfying when viewing or looking at it from a higher level of the house, so having one can indicate that you have a relaxed demeanour, especially when appreciating things around you.

Infinity edge

For independent, strong, and always-looking-ahead types of people, the infinity-edge style might be what you’re looking for if you still haven’t decided on which pool type to have. Imagine taking a plunge on a swimming pool that gives you a magnificent view of the horizon, along with a stunning landscape that your property comes with; you’ll surely say that it’s so you in every aspect.

The infinity-edge pool is specially crafted to make it look like the water protrudes towards the horizon. Its edges seamlessly vanish as if creating a magical visual effect. As the owner, you’re perceived to be someone who likes to make an impression. You don’t easily go for something familiar or ordinary – you like the finest things that life has to offer. Such a preference also speaks volumes about your exquisite taste and how you appreciate refined luxury with comfort.

Plunge Swimming Pool Designs Inspiration

Plunge pool

If you prefer a safe and fail-proof option, the plunge pool is the perfect choice for you. No matter what backyard size you have, you can customise a plunge pool to fit and look fabulous in any outdoor setting. This style is also popular among Australian families because of its traditional yet sleek appeal, particularly those who have sloping backyards with restricted or limited access.

plunge pool works best for you if you don’t plan on splurging for a swimming pool. It’s a budget-friendly option that doesn’t sacrifice comfort and luxury. Most plunge pool owners are also typically busy for most days of the week; that’s why they go for an option that’s quick to install and easy to maintain.

And because you’re typically busy, your pool area is a special spot at home that’s perfect for cooling off and lounging after a long day at work. Even when you don’t plan on taking a dip, just being by the poolside is already enough to chill you out and relieve your stress.

Plunge pools can also be styled and customised to evoke a sultry vibe. If you want yours to have that steamy and provocative air, you can click here to learn more.

Concrete pool

If you like planning for the future with a penchant for stability and long-term possibilities, the concrete pool might be what you need. The concrete pool style is durable, permanent, and highly customisable, which gives you all the freedom and flexibility you need to be creative when deciding on a design.

Should you decide on this type of pool, it means you’re in it for the long haul. That says a lot about your commitment to things and how you’re willing to go the extra mile when it comes to maintenance and other responsibilities associated with it. Going for a concrete pool also translates to your willingness to take a dive into a valuable investment that can prove to be worth every cent.

While it takes more time to build the concrete pool of your dreams over a fibreglass pool, it means you have the opportunity to think things through when it comes to your preferred elements. From selecting the colour, shape, and tiles for your pool, you won’t need to rush and for sure, your patience will pay off in the end.

The pool personality game: Are you in or out?

After reading this post, you’re probably starting to realise how you can’t easily pick a pool style, shape, or design without considering your personality. After all, your home is a reflection of who and what you really are. Essentially, that means you can’t exclude the outdoor elements that come with your property.

So, which one are you? Which pool type suits your personality and vibe the most? You better start weighing in the options and decide based on what you strongly feel speaks the most about your psyche, taste, and preferences.

The key to having a safe and healthy pool, as well as protecting pool equipment, is pool water balance.

Every pool owner aims to have a sparkling clean pool. Not only are good looks important, but sparkling clean pool water is equally as important for the safety, health and mechanical integrity of the pool and its equipment.

Getting that beautiful pool water involves dealing with the two major areas, which must work together:

  1. Filtration: This is the process of removing particles from the water. Most of these particles are individually smaller than the human eye can see, but in volume will cloud the water. Depending on the filtration system and media used, the particles will usually be filtered down to 20 micron or less. The smaller the micron rating, the better the pool water will look.
  2. Chemistry: This is vital to manage scaling, discolouration, comfort, pathogen levels and effectiveness of the chemicals in the water. This is often referred to as chemical balance.

beautiful pool water

For most pools, the highest priority factors to maintain for chemical balance are:

Chlorine: This is the primary method of addressing potential pathogens in the pool water. Traditional chlorinated pools, salt-water pools and magnesium pools all use chlorine as the sanitiser. Too low will allow pathogens to breed and too high will do damage to swimmers and pool equipment. Chlorine 1.5-3ppm.

pH: The pH levels are vital in ensuring the chemicals in the water can do their job, plus swimmers and pool equipment is protected. Luckily, the best pH level is around the same level as the human body (pH 7.4). Due to the actions of the sanitiser, pool water pH will rise normally over time. pH 7.2-7.6.

Total alkalinity: This is a measure of the ability of the pool water to maintain a desirable pH when acid is added to the pool water. Too low can cause damage to pool equipment, too high can create issues with a drop in pH and be visible as cloudy water. Total alkalinity 80-150ppm.

Calcium hardness: Maintaining calcium hardness is important to protect pool equipment as well as ensuring bather comfort. Too low and pool surfaces can suffer. Too high will result in excessive scale build-up on pool surfaces and equipment. High levels of calcium hardness will mean the pool water feels hard for swimmers. Calcium hardness — concrete pools: 200-275ppm and other pool surfaces 100-125ppm.

Cyanuric Acid (stabiliser): When chlorinated water is exposed to UV light, the chlorine content in the water is reduced very quickly. Adding an effective range of cyanuric acid or stabiliser will help retain the chlorine in pool water. Too low and chlorine levels will drop too quickly. Too high and algae growth in the pool may be more likely. Cyanuric Acid (stabiliser) 25-50ppm, but if you are using an ORP controller 15-25ppm.

sparkling clean pool

Each one of these plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of your pool, so if one of them slips out of range, the others will also be affected. The key to having a safe and healthy pool as well as protecting the pool equipment is pool water balance.

The new Davey Chloromatic Lifeguard can make balancing your pool chemistry levels easier than ever before. Automated pH and ORP testing and dosing, along with state-of-the-art remote control, monitoring and notifications, means no more surprises when you’re ready to swim.

When we emerge from winter into the warmer months, sparkling backyard pools will be the place to be.

Davey has put together some great ideas about how to make the most of your own outdoor oasis come summer. Don’t spend winter dreaming; use this period to get ready for a summer full of swimming. Covid has accelerated the trend of homeowners in all areas looking to improve their property and their lifestyle with a pool.

The industry has never been busier than it was in 2021. Some pool builders are still catching up with orders from last year. If you think the pool trend will slow now that we’re able to travel beyond our front fence again, remember there are other reasons why people want a pool these days:

• Parents really want their kids to be active. There’s nothing like a pool to get them outside and away from their screens.
• Families want a place where everyone can gather. More and more homeowners are adding a pool to help make their space the
go-to where family and friends want to be.
• A pool is an investment in the value of your home.
• The latest heating technology means you can swim year-round and enjoy pools in areas that used to be considered too cold.
• Pools are more energy efficient than ever before, with new technology reducing running costs drastically. For example, a modern variable-speed heat pump will have the average pool user saving up to 80 per cent on LPG heating, 50 per cent on natural gas-fuelled heaters, and 500 per cent on electric heating.

What are the must haves for your pool?

The cleanest, healthiest swimmable water

There is nothing better than coming home from a long day at work and jumping in your pool for a refreshing dip into clean, healthy, swimmable water. To help pool owners manage that, Davey’s new Wi-Fi-enabled pool chemistry controller, called Lifeguard, is just the thing.
Lifeguard offers simple pool water management right from your phone. With Lifeguard, sanitisation, pH and acid dosing, and even pool temperature can all be automated and the app will let you know if you are running low on salt or minerals. No more surprises when you use your pool!

cleanest, healthiest swimmable water

Connectivity: benefits of connected pools

Technology is all about making life simpler and easier, and that is exactly what the technology of Lifeguard offers pool owners. The user-friendly app gives you full control over your pool system to view and modify filtration schedules and modes, as well as allowing you to adjust set points as required. It can also be controlled locally if you do not want to connect through your home internet.

It’s very simple to activate winter settings or prep the pool for a summer party, and for day-to-day maintenance, Lifeguard does all the work.

Getting the chlorine balance right

The Lifeguard controller integrates with Davey’s compact saltwater chlorinator — ChloroMatic Nipper. The products are available as a set, or the controller is available as a standalone product for pool owners who already have a Nipper and want to upgrade.

The main Lifeguard controller communicates with other Davey pool equipment, which is easily connected through plugs on the back of the unit or through a Wi-Fi connection. If there is a Davey heat pump connected to the system, the Lifeguard unit can also maintain the pool temperature to a set point during the filtration cycle.

Lifeguard is suitable for pools up to 175,000 litres and can be used for salt or mineral chlorination.

Why you should ask for Davey

Davey is an iconic Australian business that has delivered innovative pool products for decades, across Australia and around the world. If you are looking for a brand you can trust to deliver the best pool experience, and the best products for your pool, from heat pumps to chlorinators and a range of heavy-duty pool pumps to suit any pool needs, big or small, you can depend
on Davey.

The benefits of a mineral pool swim system https://www.completehome.com.au/pools-spas/the-benefits-of-a-mineral-pool-swim-system.html Wed, 28 Jul 2021 02:23:07 +0000 https://www.completehome.com.au/?p=62354 This incredible mineral pool swim system recreates the serene experience of floating in the therapeutic Dead Sea at home with sustainably sourced minerals

A mineral pool swim system uses natural magnesium as an alternative to chlorine or salt

Have you ever dreamed of floating in the therapeutic Dead Sea? Maytronics Mineral Swim has created the exceptional pool experience, allowing you to bring a piece of this environment straight to your backyard. Mineral Swim minerals are sustainably sourced from the Dead Sea in Israel. They are 100 per cent natural magnesium-dense minerals that are added to the pool water as an alternative to the more traditional chlorine or salt pools. The high levels of magnesium in a mineral pool swim system mean the water feels softer and moisturising when swimming.p

The Mineral Swim system combines ozone purification with the magnesium-rich minerals, giving the pool owner healthier pool water. It will reduce the owner’s needs for added chemicals by up to 80 per cent, so you get a magnesium-rich pool with less chlorine and fewer harmful chemicals.

Mineral Swim has a tangible therapeutic benefit because of the ozone water purification system that works in conjunction with the minerals to purify and sanitise the water. Ozone sanitisation is significantly more powerful than traditional sanitisation systems. Ozone is a naturally occurring oxidiser that protects our planet in the atmosphere and is used widely to sanitise both air and water. If you drink bottled water, odds are it was sanitised with ozone.

Eliminating the need for harsh chemicals results in a chlorine-smell-free pool, no more itchy and red eyes, and no dry skin. Other benefits include better overall water quality, removing all the negatives of a traditional chlorine and saltwater pool (the corrosive nature), and the health/therapeutic effects of the magnesium levels in the pool water.

The downside is the initial upfront cost. While this is the most expensive option initially, further savings are often realised in things like reduced electricity usage and chemical costs.

Converting your pool is easy and can be done to both newly built pools and existing ones. The conversion is as simple as installing the added ozone purification and other systems based on what is currently installed, then adding in the required amount of minerals.

The Maytronics Mineral Swim system is Climate Care Certified. This means you are not only providing your loved ones with a healthy pool experience, you are also helping the environment.

Take the warmer weather as a sign — now is the time to splash out on your backyard and introduce some of those seriously luxe features you’ve always wanted. John Storch from A Total Concept tells us more

In Australia, when we talk about warmer weather we tend to think of the beach. But why not bring the water to your home with your own pool — perfect for the three Fs: families, fitness and fun. (Of course, the water works don’t need to stop there. Spas and saunas can take your space to the next level of relaxation for unlimited hours of bliss, as you’ll see…)

Planning for a pool is imperative and it can be difficult to know where to start. We presented your questions to some industry professionals (you’re welcome) so you can be prepared for the grand design of your great outdoors.

Going green

Don’t forget, water isn’t only for the pool itself; it’s also for the plants that surround it. An immaculate garden can be your peaceful retreat after a big week of work. Every space is different, whether you’re based on a hill, have a tiny backyard or acreage. Think about what you really want from your outside area and allow yourself to see the possibilities. Research, refer back to this guide and talk to the pros so you can dream big in your own backyard

Fashion forward pool trends

With summer’s fast approach, we can look forward to discovering all the latest in pool trends, from plunge pools to large-format pavers and pool automation. Award-winning design practice A Total Concept, which offers the full package (with a team of landscape architects, designers and swimming pool consultants on hand) knows just what’s happening.

“Pools have changed greatly in the past five years and will continue to do so this summer,” says company principal John Storch. “The Australian lifestyle has inspired a simple pool shape that utilises clean lines rather than complex shapes.”

The company has been doing a lot with chunky square edges to create floating effects for paving around swimming pools, explains John, using coloured micrograin interiors and large-format paving materials inside the pool instead of tiles. “It’s become more common for poolside paving to either use natural products such as sandstone and limestone, or handmade products such as porcelain tiles and timber prints. We’re being asked for more entertaining and relaxation areas around pools, with paving alternatives such as hardwood sleepers, stepping stones and lawns.”

John’s team is designing tanning benches within pools that allow a person to either lie on the bench or fully immerse themselves. “Of course, the rise in tech has seen a rise in automated pool systems that link the pool to the home as technology becomes more affordable,” he adds. “For pools this means ease of cleaning and being able to remotely control heating, lighting and water features.”

Whatever your needs coming into summer, John says the one certainty is the need to develop your external spaces. “We all want to increase the quality of our everyday life by creating a resort — a home away from home.”

Rules of the pool: your how-to guide

It’s easy to feel like you’re swimming against the tide when it comes to proper pool planning. A big investment that will significantly change your backyard, it can be daunting as you begin to research the ins and outs. We spoke to the team at GOODMANORS Garden, Pool and Landscape Design for the inside scoop on all things pool.

First things first, is every backyard suitable for a pool?

If the concept of “pool” can be malleable, then yes. While most consider only large yards suitable for pools, we find ourselves working more and more with inner-city property owners who want the best of both worlds. For these traditionally smaller and often unusually shaped blocks, we custom design in-ground spas that meet the requirements of relaxation and escape, without intruding too much upon the total landscape.

What are your best tips for planning a pool?

When thinking about a pool within the scope of your garden, consider your journey first and foremost. A pool should complement your use of space, not intrude upon it.

What pool design trends do you think will be popular this summer?

We don’t operate within the scope of traditional trends as we prefer to create landscapes that are investments for our clients, and which will stay relevant within the space for years to come. Something we look forward to seeing more of are pool designs bespoke to the architecture of the home, instead of cookie-cutter creations that lose their appeal only a few years after installation.

Where do you stand on the big debate: concrete versus fibreglass?

Concrete pools, as they provide higher quality and an incomparable longevity.

John’s top tips for pool design

  1. PREPARATION Investigate all underground services and know where they are. Research all authorities’ requirements and see if you need approvals. Look through magazines for inspiration — tear out and keep copies of things you want to incorporate into the design.
  2. HELP If it’s all too hard, employ a landscape architect to help. Spend the money as it’s always worth getting it right the first time.
  3. UNIFY The style of finishes around the pool must be compatible but not necessarily the same as the house. If possible, use the same materials and pick up the same colours in the landscape as the house. Bands of similar plants will also look better than a hotchpotch of many.
  4. KEEP IT SIMPLE Simple design lines always work better than complex intricate shapes and are more pleasing to the eye.
  5. SCALE Size is important. Keeping things relative to human scale makes the environment more comfortable to be in. A 15m pool with waterfalls, wet edges and water spouts can look inspiring in a large resort at sunset, but may not have the same effect in an inner-city courtyard garden.
  6. FEATURES Always incorporate at least one timeless feature in a pool as a focal point. A water feature, pool light or plant well positioned could lift a pool area from pleasant to electrifying.
  7. MAINTENANCE Automatic control systems, cleaning systems and chlorination systems are worth the cost.
  8. FUN Have fun with the design and garden. Remember, you’re the one who’ll use it. If you want the fluorescent furnishings, plastic plants and giraffe slides, go for it!

Make everyday a spa day

You can definitely sleep easy after an evening spent lounging in a spa. And that’s just one of the benefits that spas are known for. Add a bit of fruit, a glass of bubbly (beer if you prefer) and voila — that spa-cation you’ve been dreaming of becomes a reality, within metres of your own home.

Nevertheless, whether you’re considering a statement freestanding spa or an in-built version that complements your pool, there are a few things to consider before you start happily googling where and what to buy. We spoke to two expert spa teams and posed the questions
many homeowners ask.

Endless Spas

Dive deep into pool & spa design

In-ground versus above-ground — what are the pros and cons?

There are many advantages toboth — it just depends on your lifestyle, backyard and what you want from your spa. Above-ground or freestanding spas are movable, perfect for those who don’t want the commitment of an in-ground model. You may be renting or want to move in the future and take the spa with you. Portable spas are also easier to install, requiring only a concrete slab and hardwired electrical connection.

On the other hand, in-ground spas can create a beautiful visual element to your backyard as they are unobtrusive, sitting flush with the ground or deck or partly raised, depending on your preference. This type of spa can beautifully complement an existing pool.

What makes for a truly great spa?

A truly great spa is one that meets your needs the best. A spa is an investment and the quality should ultimately reflect that. Consider different jet counts and seating configurations to suit different needs and lifestyles, including lounger and all-upright seating options.

What are the health benefits?

A spa can provide loads of different health benefits including relaxation, hydrotherapy, aiding sleep and helping you achieve a better mindset. Additionally, the salt used in our spas is a natural healing agent and can help ease aches and pains as well as helping eczema and allergy sufferers relieve their symptoms.

Salt water versus chlorinated water?

All spas require a sanitising agent such as chlorine, bromine, peroxide or salt. We’ve found that salt offers many benefits compared to other sanitisation methods. It’s cheaper and easier to maintain, gentler on the skin (perfect for allergy sufferers and those with delicate or sensitive skin), has no chlorine odour and saves water as spa water is dumped less frequently.

Vortex Spas

Vortex Spa

In-ground versus above-ground — pros and cons?

There are two main types of in-ground spas. The first is a concrete spa, usually made as part of a swimming pool installation. This type may lack hydrotherapy benefits due to the type of jets and their placement. Often, this spa isn’t heated and when it is it’ll have a high rate of heat loss due to lack of insulation.

The second type is an acrylic portable spa that’s sunk into the ground to be near or level with the surrounding area. This option is similar to aboveground spas, providing all the same great benefits including superior comfort, hydrotherapy and energy efficiency, while also making a stylish installation. This type requires more planning and expense so that the area is well drained and spa or equipment bays can still be accessed.

Above-ground spas have all those great features mentioned for acrylic portable spas but can offer versatility in portability and be more cost-effective. Above-ground models can also be incredibly visually appealing and a popular choice for homeowners who want to add wow factor to their ground or deck.

What makes a truly great spa?

Many elements can make the difference between a spa and a great spa. Our top picks from the outside include: visual appeal; long-lasting durability and easy maintenance; a high-density cover for greater insulation; ergonomic and comfortable seating; jet quality and placement for effective hydrotherapy; an intuitive touch pad controller; programmable circulation pump for energy efficiency; and a controller with a heater that can stay on while the pumps are running so the water doesn’t cool during use.

Health benefits?

It’s been noted from the earliest recorded human history that sitting in warm water provides several benefits for wellbeing. Numerous modern studies confirm this too, but most people agree spas provide seven key benefits:

  • Relaxation and the countless associated benefits
such as reduced blood pressure and a better sleep
  • Reduced muscle aches, pains and tension
  • Increased blood flow
  • Improved cardiovascular health
  • Minimised arthritis pain
  • Reduced tissue repair time
  • A comfortable screen-free space to reconnect
    and socialise.
Salt water or chlorinated?

Salt water is mainly used for sanitisation and magnesium’s beneficial properties. The natural sanitisation of salt water is automatic and can require less maintenance, while the user can also benefit from a reduction in chemical sanitisers. While not all salts are high enough in magnesium to have an impact on tissue repair, certain types definitely are. If the spa isn’t designed for salt or you “overdose” a spa system with chlorine, there is potential for early breakdown of components.

It’s getting hot in here

Dive deep into pool & spa design

Fancy unwinding and cleansing in the comfort of your own backyard? From Japanese onsens to hot mud baths in Rotorua, New Zealand, detoxifying the body through heat, steam or natural land features has been practised for millennia.

With a long list of health benefits that range from improved blood circulation and faster recovery from injury through to increased energy levels, it’s no surprise that people all over the world enjoy a good soak. Its popularity has seen a rise in backyard saunas, in which you can enjoy all the benefits without the need to go anywhere!

“Saunas are where health, wellbeing, pleasure and relaxation meet,” says Scott Campbell, managing director of Australian Sauna and Steam Rooms. A typical sauna is a timber-enclosed room designed for sweat bathing, with temperatures usually between 60°C and 90°C. Typically equipped with heater rocks, the user can ladle water onto the hot rocks to create steam, which blends with the dry air and provides a rejuvenating experience.

If you’ve decided to invest in a sauna, you need to first consider the size and location.
“A sauna can be located anywhere in the home, with the most popular areas being near a pool, home gym, main bathroom, ensuite or outdoor alfresco area,” Scott explains. “The size will relate to how many people you want to sit in the sauna and if you want the ability to lie down.”

A designated sauna company will be able to help with the specifics — from building a one-seater to a set-up for more than 40 — to suit your space and needs. Don’t forget to situate your sauna near a shower or pool so you can cool off straight after a steamy (or dry) session.

Seeing (infra)red

The classic sauna isn’t the only option for providing cleansing capabilities. The latest on the wellbeing scene, infrared rooms provide heat therapy without getting extremely hot. Specific wavelengths of infrared heat raise the body’s core temperature and provide a number of health benefits. With plenty of commercial locations dotted around, we recommend you try before you buy — they’re definitely an alternative to consider.
