With land in sought after locations on the demise, it’s time to think outside the box with unique solutions to grant you the tools to get your new home, in the location of your choosing.

Take for example our recent project at the beautiful beachside suburb of Scarborough, on stunning Redcliffe Peninsula. McLachlan Homes jumped at the opportunity to create a stunning new project in place of an old, outdated home.

With a beautiful location just one street away from the water, the choice to knock down and rebuild was the answer. Overseeing the demolition and subdivision of the block, our award-winning design team envisioned a two-storey home which was decided upon to maximise the blocks true potential.

Stunning new project

Whilst providing additional space we also wanted to be mindful of the character of the local area and decided upon Hamptons architecture and influences. Citing an elegant street presence this charming design used a stylish combination of materials to create a picture-perfect home which undoubtably suited its surroundings.

Stepping into the Entrance with generous 2700 high Ceiling, this home is flooded with natural light that entices you, the 300×600 rectified tiling underfoot draws you to explore the spaces within. A great sense of careful planning and detail is echoed with an excellent blend of open and light living spaces perfectly positioned on a cool coastal colour pallet.

The Stunning Kitchen is fit for a master chef with bespoke cabinetry, stone tops with feature pendant lighting and stainless-steel appliances. Storage is offered in abundance with the inclusion of a walk-in pantry concealed behind a cavity slider.  The Living and Dining enjoy an open plan lifestyle maximizing the crossflow ventilation. Taking advantage of the dual outdoor zones from the Under-roof Alfresco overlooking the picturesque swimming pool and Courtyard for their Natural light.

Stunning new project

The valuable inclusion of a separate Media room ticks a modern must have, creating a more intimate space to enjoy Movie nights with the family.  With the inclusion of a functional and stylish powder room allowing the maximum amount of space to be devoted to Living areas. A generous Laundry with walk in linen offer great appeal of additional storage solutions that older homes don’t tend to feature which are now considered must haves in modern homes.

Accessing the upper level by the stained Kwila timber stairs this well designed footprint features four generous sized Bedrooms, Kids retreat, Study and a spacious main bathroom and separate WC. The Master Bedroom is perched at the front of the home and has plenty of space with a large walk-in robe, balcony and grand Ensuite. The Ensuite is sure to impress with feature entrance niches, Hollywood style double vanity in Strata Matt Grey and feature lighting.

As a family-owned builder, McLachlan Homes take pride in every project and ensure every home has our built around lifestyle motto in mind. Our attention to detail and 25+ years’ experience offers comfort and trust to our valued customers on their new home journey.

Whether you are embarking on a knock down rebuild project, difficult block or traditional build, McLachlan Homes award winning team have you covered.

Achieving a cohesive feel for this light, airy, beachside apartment was part of the brief to Kate Lawrence of Kate Lawrence Interiors.

Keen to embrace the coastal location and honour the prestigious penthouse position, she settled on the intricate texture of Taj Mahal stone from Cav’art Designer Stone to create unique features and maintain flow. The effect is spellbinding. While choosing stone to soften might seem contradictory — incorporated in sweeping curves at the bathroom vanity and around the fireplace in the living room — the surface provides an anchor for the aesthetic of the home’s calming interior.

It’s in the kitchen, though, where the stone’s captivating colour and texture are used to its greatest effect. Combined with premium Farmers cabinetry in limewashed oak and Taubmans Cotton Sheets, it blends effortlessly with the scalloped texture of the island’s base and the oak of the barstools and flooring.

Here, as in other areas, brass highlights — in the form of handles and tapware — were chosen specifically to complement the stone’s creamy tones, with the combination upping the luxe factor.

A soft palette, with a touch of glamour, was the wish from this home’s owners, and it has certainly been granted in this top-floor oasis.

Filled with delightfully unexpected features and functionality that would make a workhorse feel lazy, clap your eyes on this outstanding kitchen where all is well but nothing is as it seems.

Take the laundry, for example. Hidden behind tall doors that match the rest of the pale-green cabinetry, the concealed space is just one of many surprises awaiting anyone who enters. Indeed, unless it was explicitly shown, you’d never know this kitchen allows its user to go from boiling pasta to soaking undies, which is just the way the owner intended it.

The laundry isn’t the only element kept under wraps. The microwave and other small appliances are concealed to keep benchspace clear while still remaining easily accessible. Exposed beams add interest overhead and provide a refined rustic feel to the setting.

By integrating Shaker-style doors with VJ panels, the designer has imbued the kitchen with warmth and charm, creating a welcoming space that borrows elements from both Country and Hamptons aesthetics. The VJ panels soften the entire space by bringing restrained touches of Country into a Hamptons-inspired kitchen. Minty fresh with hidden gems at every turn, there’s no denying this kitchen deserves a pat on the back and a fat steak to celebrate.

The homeowners requested a modern, functional kitchen for their newly built home. The result most certainly lives up to their brief — and features some exciting added extras too.

Practicality was paramount, and this kitchen is brimming with it. Two wall ovens and plentiful bench space were integrated into the space to ensure meal prep is a breeze. Internal drawers were added for storage, and a window splashback was chosen to give the homeowners the opportunity to admire their garden’s greenery while cooking meals.

This space features a highly practical scullery, which is hidden from plain sight. It includes cabinetry for the storage of small appliances, canned goods and spices.
The kitchen’s cantilevered seating area, however, is very much in plain sight. It provides the perfect location for the family to bond over breakfast, and a spot for drinks and nibbles during social gatherings. The sliding door located just beyond the kitchen leads out to a beautiful alfresco area, which features plenty of seating as well as a pool. When it come to modern practicality, it really doesn’t get much better than this!

A beautiful kitchen or bathroom isn’t complete without equally stunning fixtures. Tapware can be a choice between making a statement or complementing the style of a room.

Setting the benchmark for contemporary and intelligent living, the Caspian is a collection of 18 oversize residences in the impeccable Hampton, Victoria, location. Peaceful with a coastal charm, the homes feature a mixture of deco details that reflect a timeless aesthetic. Richard Ward, of Bayley Ward Architects, explains that the guiding principle was “to create spaces for all seasons, with the deliberate use of tone and texture to stimulate the senses”.

The kitchen comprises European oak flooring, feature lighting and the Pegasi M pull-out sink mixer curve from Faucet Strommen. The antique brass medium finish on this mixer is an organic finish that will tarnish, wear and oxidise with time. Inconsistency is the beauty of this finish and while the exterior may change, the structural integrity of the tapware remains the same. The smooth curve of the tap reflects the coastal feel of the home and unique edge of the island benchtop.

The good looks don’t end in the kitchen. The spacious bathroom oozes opulence and clever design. Staggered ceramic tiles and graceful natural stone are complemented by lovely brass tapware, while rain showers located behind fluted glass doors are an exquisite feature. Consistency is key is this space, where Faucet Strommen’s delightful taps fill the room. All with the same antique brass medium finish, the bath, basin and wall mixers, as well as the overhead shower and toilet roll holder are from the Pegasi range.

The combination of textures, from the aged finishes to the natural stone, brings this bathroom to life. We’d tap that.

In a quiet cul-de-sac, just a stone’s throw away from the beach, this modern take on the quintessential Kiwi bach affords its owners a degree of privacy from its tightly packed neighbours, providing a peaceful retreat for their weekends away from the city

When his wife Christine suggested they spend their Easter break in Pauanui, Warren Drinkwater was not convinced. He’d heard a lot about this sprawling subdivision by the sea, and it wasn’t a place he really wanted to go. That was back in 2002. Fast forward 15 years and the couple are absolutely delighted to have just moved into their sharp new bach, which has just won an NZIA local architecture award.

Clearly, that first visit to this ever-popular Coromandel resort changed Warren’s mind. “We rented a small place by the beach and it turned out to be a stunning weekend. I remember walking along the beach and looking up at the mountain and thinking how beautiful it was down here.”

On the way back from the beach, the couple spied a small weatherboard house for sale, just a couple of hundred metres back from the beach. “It was a simple, timber-framed house, 11m long by 7m wide, with a carport and an outside laundry, probably built around 1970, so it had been here a long, long time,” remembers Warren. “We didn’t fall in love with it, but it ticked all the boxes.”

The couple ended up buying the house, to use it as it was, but with a view to doing something with the site in the future. “It was a long-term plan,” he says. “At the time our three daughters were 10, 15 and 17, so we planned to do something about 12 to 15 years down the track, when they’d grown up.”

Warren had always imagined the new structure as a series of pods. “I’d seen a house I’d quite liked that was a two-pod layout, and thought that a similar system could work quite well here, so that when it was just Christine and I, we’d utilise part of it, and when the extended family was here, we’d use the whole lot. And that seemed a lot more manageable and serviceable.”

Warren started having a conversation with a local builder, but every time he came back with a concept, it was always a 300sqm-plus home. “I said to him, I don’t want a home, I’ve got one of those back in Auckland. I want a bach. I want something a little bit different.”

That’s when he turned to Auckland-based architect, Paul Leuschke, who was the architect of the home they were living in in Auckland. In his brief, Warren didn’t specify what he wanted as far as a physical form, more what he wanted the house to evoke.

“I deliberately didn’t tell Paul what I wanted,” remembers Warren. “In general terms, I told him it was about creating memories. Somewhere special, somewhere we could enjoy the sun, with enough space for us to retire to if we got on each other’s nerves,” he chuckles. It was also to be a place that supported the whole ‘whanau’”, as he puts it.

“The only two [physical] requirements we had was that we wanted to maximise the view of Mount Pauanui from every angle — picture-framed from the lounge, the kitchen and the upstairs bedroom — and we wanted to take advantage of the sea view from the master bedroom. When Paul revealed his first scheme, it was almost exactly what we were after and, with a few modifications, that’s what we have here today,” says Warren.

The architect’s design comprised three mono-pitch volumes, arranged to form a U-shape, with the open side facing roughly north-east. The main structure, at the rear of the property, rises two storeys and houses the living, cooking and dining areas on the ground floor, with a private master suite above — a prerequisite for Warren and Christine, who requested beach views from their bedroom.

The remaining two buildings are both single level. The one opposite the living volume contains generous guest accommodation, with two double bedrooms and a shared bathroom. This wing can be completely shut down when not in use — another request from the couple, as it is often just the two of them at the bach. The third structure forms the bottom of the U-shape and contains single-car garaging and laundry.

This corral of black-painted, ply-and-batten buildings was to be brought together by a large timber deck, much of which is protected by a loggia with operable louvres. A stand-alone wood-burning fireplace, with accompanying firepit, adds to the sense of community.

Once Warren and Christine were happy with the architect’s design, the existing house was removed and work started on the new bach. Warren says the build phase was fairly uneventful and the three structures went up without a hitch, as did the interior fitout, which was also designed and specified by the architects.

The predominant theme of the interior is white, with black highlights, and evokes a casual “beachy” ambience. It’s a clean, timeless palette where colour can be added in the form of accessories, then changed without the need to re-decorate. In the summer, bright bold colours can be used and then swapped for deeper, warmer tones in the winter.

Conceived around two seasonal zones, the west-facing half of the living space contains the kitchen and scullery, and opens to the covered deck — perfect for summer living. A carpeted floor demarcates the southern side of the living space. With mountain views and a gas fireplace, this area has more of a snug feel. This is the home’s winter space.

Warren says the lounge, or “snug”, is a popular spot to hang out in winter and summer. During the colder months, with its gas fire and lower ceiling, it provides a cosy place to retire to in the evenings. And in the summer, it’s a great place to escape the heat because of the natural ventilation that flows through the house via its many windows.

“All the windows in this house open up completely, so that creates a nice little breeze through the whole residence in the summer,” says Warren. “We’ve also got this corner window seat that’s 6m along one wall and 2m along the other. It’s a great little feature that can also provide sleeping for four extra people if needed.”

Warren says the other thing he likes about the house is its privacy. “We’re not seen from the road or from the path on the reserve out the back, nor by our neighbours on each side — we’re just in our own little cocoon. And because of its shape and orientation, the house also cuts off some of the prevailing breezes, which makes it very sheltered.”

Although the single garage is slightly larger than normal because of the laundry, it’s typical of most garages at the beach in that there’s precious little room for a car because of all the bikes, beach toys and holiday paraphernalia. “I don’t know if I’ll ever get the car in there,” laughs Warren. “But there’s heaps of room to park on the verge. Also, one day it might become a bunk room for grandchildren. We are very happy with the outcome,” he adds. “What we wanted this place to do, and how we wanted it to function in the summer and the winter has absolutely happened, as Paul described
it would.”

The high-ceilinged and high-achieving Joyful House is the quirky addition to an original weatherboard worker’s cottage built in the early 1900s.

Confronted with a budget tighter than a newborn baby’s skin and a brief with loftier ambitions than Trump’s, the architects at Mihaly Slocombe had their work cut out for them when clients Zytel and Matt approached the firm and requested a renovation to create a “forever home” by opening up the rear of their property. With the birth of their third child, the clients hoped to add multiple light-filled spaces conducive to energetic family fun.

The double-fronted Edwardian worker’s cottage, with white weatherboard cladding and galvanised steel roof, is contrasted by the renovated addition, which is triangular in form and clad in black lightweight cement sheeting. A sloping roof, considered window placement and translucent fibreglass roof covering the deck have resulted in a living space infused with natural light and overlooked by a mezzanine retreat peeping out from above.

To minimise costs, the original bedrooms were preserved so the limited budget could be spent on new service areas and a flexible living room connected to a spacious back garden. With standard construction processes combined with modest materials, the outstanding results were achieved for a steal. Swathed in Dulux Joyful, the roof, ceiling and upper walls in the living room scream sunshine and happiness. They also reflect the vibrant family who reside within its semi-yellow walls.

With youth and energy on their side, the children of the home were considered when materials were selected. Heavy-duty choices included hardwood timber floors, sisal carpet and plywood joinery. Nothing was overlooked and even the door handles — or circular cutouts in the case of the cupboard doors — are ideal for little fingers. “We collaborated closely with Mark Little of Little Constructions and a range of local craftsmen to keep a lid on costs,” says a representative from Mihaly Slocombe. “We used local Geelong-based trades for the entire project, from windows and joinery to plumbing. We found ways to let local timber craftsmen flex their skills in the plywood stair and joinery, and timber windows and privacy screens. We selected materials that will absorb the bumps and scrapes of growing children with ease, and which will look as good at their high school graduation as they do on their first day of kinder.”

The ability of Joyful House to reinvent itself and adapt to the family as their needs change is one of this project’s greatest successes. Another is the way the south-facing facade that opens to the back garden has been designed with illumination and access to cooling breezes in mind.

With a small block and a family of five that loves spending time outside, this project was completed for approximately 30 per cent less per square metre than the average Mihaly Slocombe project. However, the hardwearing materials palette and clever design have led to a house that looks like a million bucks. “Warwick and Erica from Mihaly Slocombe took the daily activities of our large family into consideration, designing a very functional house that suits our needs perfectly,” the clients conclude. “We look forward to a lot of entertaining in this fantastic space.”
