The innovative design of this unique Balinese-resort-inspired pool is a first in Australia, resulting in numerous awards

This award-winning plunge pool design was inspired by a Balinese resort, but with a contemporary twist that’s suited to modern Australian acreage living. Designed by Jim Vansleve of Norfolk Pools, the freeform pool is positioned to nestle around an old cottage that was then renovated to suit the pool.

The old brick house was built into the side of the hill and the pool was designed to take full advantage of the block’s slope, connecting upstairs living to the downstairs entrance. Designed as a crescent shape, the pool was built to be the showpiece of the home. It also dictated the renovation’s design, with the house plans changing several times to suit the pool, which, according to Jim, is “an engineering feat”.

This balinese resort inspired pool encompasses all aspects of good design: positioning to the house and entertaining areas, a direct link to the main living zones of the house, visibility of the pool from as many vantage points as possible, and creative use of materials to highlight the pool’s features.

“It was a lengthy build as the pool shell had to be completed before the renovation started and could not be finished until the house was complete — much the same as most new house builds,” explains Jim.

The huge cantilevered swimout has three layers of steel and required incredible amounts of bracing to ensure its structural integrity. Emphasised by the fully tiled exterior in silver travertine cobbles that transition from 200mm x 100mm to 100mm x 100mm, the cantilever edge cascades to the pond below and can be seen from many vantage points throughout the house and property.

“There was a lot of discussion on tiling of the pool and how to emphasise the cantilever edge underneath as this would be the first visible part of the pool on entering the house,” says Jim. “We also had to consider how to get the overflowing water of the negative edge to fall vertically rather than trickling down the underside face of the pool, plus the use of 100mm x 100mm tiles on the curved vertical faces to keep the smooth flow rather than becoming angular. The owners also preferred the soft tones of the green Bali stone over a blue pool and wanted the pool to draw your eye to the horizon.”

Simple but effective landscaping further emphasises the unique elements of the property. Norfolk Pools designed the outdoor areas below and adjacent to the pool, including the lower lounge area, open-air pergola, black reflection pond opposite and a dry riverbed feature for drainage.

It’s not difficult to see why this exceptional project was awarded 2021 SPASA Qld Pool of the Year plus 2021 Master Builders Association Gold Coast Best Residential Swimming Pool, and Norfolk Pools is keenly awaiting announcements on national awards in September.

Jim Vansleve started Norfolk Pools in 1974 and is still actively involved in its day-to-day construction management and sales, accompanied by daughter Danica. Between the two, they manage all projects, from initial enquiry through to completion, with a highly skilled team that is attentive to detail.

Norfolk Pools is a boutique builder, concentrating on quality over quantity and with a penchant for difficult sites. Build numbers are capped at starting one to two pools a week, building on average 70 pools per year. “This allows us to ensure quality of what we build,” say Jim and Danica. Projects range from small plunge pools and private lap pools to more creative and involved projects. “We service metro Brisbane — Bayside to Western Suburbs and Albany Creek to Rochedale,” they add. “Our specialty is customised quality concrete pools, creative designs and difficult sites, with the aim of giving our clients a pleasant building experience, whether it is a simple family pool to enjoy or the more challenging sites with complex engineering where experience counts.

“We like to meet with our clients on site to assess important issues such as access and levels of the land, the house position, and to find out what our clients would like to achieve. We can design anything but we also like to be cost-efficient. Our focus is on design rather than a sale, we talk through possibilities, why one option may be better than another, and try to provide as much information as possible on how a build would take place due to property elements. We use 3D modelling, which we find takes the ‘grey areas’ out of the quoting process, such as where and why retaining walls might be needed.”

Norfolk Pools has received many awards over the past decade, from pools ranging under $50,000 to more than $100,000, and has collected technical and engineering awards,
as well as recognition for lighting and water feature innovations. Recently, in the 2021 SPASA Queensland Awards, the company won Gold awards for Pool of the Year (for this project), Spa of the Year, Concrete Pool over $120,000, Pool Sales Representative (Danica Vansleve), Innovative Project and In-ground Concrete Spa. At the same awards, Norfolk Pools also took home Highly Commended for Best Concrete Pool Builder, Concrete Pool & Spa Combination, Courtyard or Plunge Pool, Pool Designer (Danica Vansleve) and In-ground Concrete Spa.

Norfolk Pools is a member of SPASA and the Master Builders Association of Queensland.

If you crave a little resort-style luxury, this landscape is sure to inspire

On a picturesque large block in Wonga Park, situated on the cusp of the Yarra Ranges in Victoria, landscape designer David Franklin knew he needed to create something “epic”. He decided to go the resort style living route, creating a garden that would, he says, “make you question why you would ever need to go on holidays again”.

“This is a big property, hence it had to have a grand entrance. There is a big, sweeping driveway bordered with a classic country-style planting palette and Castlemaine slate stonework that we hand-chipped. Moving to the rear garden, I flipped the switch, creating a modern resort-style entertaining area and a monster swimming pool and spa for major wow factor.”

The rear garden offers myriad places to relax or entertain, starting with a new extension to the covered deck at the rear of the home. This area boasts a barbecue integrated into a “floating” concrete benchtop and, nearby, a breakfast bar overlooking the pool where you can share a drink or enjoy a casual meal.

This part of the deck also offers a bird’s-eye view of the pergola daybed, firepit area and the poolside lounging deck, out of which grows a pair of palms in true resort style living. This area was highlighted by a merbau timber-clad planter box filled with Strelitzia nicolai and Dichondra repens ‘Silver Falls’, which houses a brass strip detail that David chose to add to the glitz and glamour of the resort style.

Then there is the bright and bold new pool and spa, built by Franklin Pools Australia. “The old pool wasn’t really practical and the spa didn’t work spatially, so we built a new one,” says David. “I decided to include a much bigger circular spa with an overflow edge within the new pool and clad it with bright-blue Bisazza glass mosaic tiles for a high-class finish. This spa is the best size for entertaining at any level.”

Material selection is key and here, for the hardscape elements, David favoured natural materials. “For richness of colour and visual interest, we used a mix of Castlemaine slate crazy paving and wall cladding with a sawn basalt,” he says. “The Castlemaine slate adds a nice colour tone that matches the facade of the house, while the bluestone adds a more modern feel out towards the rear garden. For durability and ease of maintenance for our client, we used merbau timber for the decking.”

As in all of David’s gardens, the plants play a crucial role in creating structure and scale. In the front garden, an avenue of Carpinus betulus ‘Fastigiata’ line the driveway, Pyrus ‘Capital’ surround the water feature, while a large Phoenix canariensis leads the eye towards the firepit and pool area. For a Hollywood resort-style living feel in the rear garden, David opted for tropical plants such as Strelitzia nicolai, Dichondra repens and Gardenia ‘Radicans’. Betula pendula ‘Moss White’ are scattered throughout the design to allow dappled shade to combat the summer heat.

Capping it all off, David couldn’t allow this design to lose impact once the sun goes down. Like any holiday resort, big-impact lighting was pivotal to the design, highlighting the best features within the garden. From uplighting the feature trees to adding lights to the pool, spa and paths, not to mention the strip lighting for the bench seat near the firepit area, this sure is the place to be on hot summer nights.

Catapulting its outdoor space to the next level, this resort-style property has everything you could ever dream of

Recently completed and brought to fruition by Kiama Pools & Landscapes, this glass-tiled spa and large rectangular pool are the showpieces of a large property on a level block. The pool has been strategically positioned to take their outdoor space to the next level. It sits at the back of the block which overlooks the tennis court and alfresco areas. Its elevated position means it’s also visible from all of the living areas in the home.

The owners requested an outdoor space that would have the ‘wow’ factor every time they step outside. They wanted something that could be enjoyed year-round, of great quality in construction and equipment, low-maintenance and fully automated.

take your outdoor pool to the next level with a elevated pool

“It was an absolute pleasure to create an outdoor space for this lovely family,” say Tim Sprague and Stephen Lloyd, co-owners of Kiama Pools, who constructed the elevated fully tiled pool, spa and outdoor living/dining poolside area.  “We constructed the 10.4m-long concrete pool raised above the ground — this height elevation really adds to the look and appeal of the pool and spa. It also doubles as a pool fence and provides a seamless flow from inside to outside the home.”

Quality is of upmost importance to Kiama Pools and this project is a prime example of what the company does best — produce superior pools, using meticulous attention to detail during construction, that perfectly fit the client brief.

A combination of travertine, custom-designed stone and timber decking around the pool adds visual interest and texture to the design. The azure glass-tile mosaics bounce with the sunlight and the exquisite beauty of the pool, spa and outdoor space is truly evident. Multi-coloured pool lights and garden lights transform the area into a magical space at night, providing both a fun place for evening drinks, dinners and spas as well as a visual delight from both inside and outside the home.

Tim and Stephen have created a stunning backdrop to the property, with an outdoor zone that exudes timeless grandeur. “We listen to the client brief, incorporate style, functionality and the highest quality to build a swimming pool that will not only look amazing, but will last,” say Tim and Stephen. This project is proof of that.

With a cool, calm and relaxed vibe, why wait for a holiday to kick back with a design like this resort-style apartment?

Looking for a change, the owner of this apartment engaged the talents of Design Artistry to recreate this stunning property. Opting for the feeling of a resort-style apartment, a simple colour palette and focus on specific materials, textures and finishes go a long way to achieving a relaxing atmosphere where every day feels like a holiday.

A white backdrop was a requirement for the new design, and this serves to enhance the visual detail and views outside. The white palette also flows through in the kitchen benchtop, which for many conjures up concerns of high maintenance and risk to staining and colour change. The designer chose Staron Bright White as it offers the ultimate surface. The non-porous easy clean nature and UV stable properties of Staron delivers a white countertop solution, without the worries of colour change and staining. The selection of Staron also made it possible for the seamless integration of a Staron Solid Surface sink, eliminating the need for silicon.

The parquetry detail tiled splashback complements the weaving of the pendant lighting, soft woven fabrics and additional textile elements to add texture within the otherwise smooth lines of the kitchen.

With a large resort-style pool to enjoy year-round, these homeowners can enjoy life away from the hustle and bustle.

One of the many benefits of building in Sydney’s Hills District is the select number of large blocks that is available. And with a spacious site comes the opportunity to have a generous-size pool, which is exactly what these homeowners wanted.

“For their acreage, the homeowners envisaged a large resort-style pool with wow factor, and something that would look amazing both during the day and also at night,” explains designer Gavin Bazley of Aquastone Pools and Landscapes. “It had to have a heated spa for year-round use, and it needed to be grand in scale to suit the acreage property.”

The 15m-long rectangular pool is a focal point of the home and allows the owners to swim laps for exercise, while the 2.5m x 2.5m heated spa is great for relaxing on chilly winter nights. Positioned in front of the trio of water features, multiple ledge areas in the pool feature sunken loungers to enjoy, and there’s also an extended step/shallow area where kids can play.

The entire outdoor space was designed and built by Aquastone Pools and Landscapes, which incorporated steppers that lead out to the cabana with timber deck, while for the finishing touch, extensive underwater pool lighting ensures the area looks stunning at night.

Aquastone also included in-floor cleaning and full automation, allowing the homeowners to conveniently operate their pool from a touchscreen in the house, or via an app on their phone.

“Pools need to be not only functional, but they also have to be integrated into and become a feature of the home,” says Gavin. This project is a perfect example of Aquastone’s design philosophy.

Aquastone Pools and Landscapes was formed in 1996 by brothers Gavin and Scott Bazley, and specialises in custom-designed concrete pools and landscaping. “We also specialise in working with difficult sites and can often offer a solution to blocks that appear to be challenging,” say Gavin and Scott. “We build new pools as well as renovations. These projects are often complete packages which incorporate the pool and landscaping.”

Aquastone is a member of SPASA and the Master Builders Association of NSW. The company has won multiple awards for its projects including the 2020 gold SPASA national and NSW award for Best Pool over 100k, 2019 Silver SPASA Sydney Award for Pool Renovations over $25,000, and Gold SPASA Sydney Award for Pool Renovation up to $25,000.

Swimming pools are an iconic staple to a quintessential Australian home.

Swimming pools designed for leisure are seen as a luxury statement and are the most opulent additions you can make to your home.

Building a backyard pool usually comes with a significant cost, so it will both be a sensible and bold move to capitalise on this added feature. This is precisely what interior designer Kate and Luke of Sydney Swans did for a unique, contemporary coastal duplex home in Sydney.

We recently had the chance to work with them and build the outdoor pool for this knockdown and rebuild duplex project with a goal of keeping one side and selling the other, so the owners can still indulge in their inground pool while acquiring profit.

duplex-outdoor-swimming-pool

The idea for the project came to life when Kate and Luke were researching duplex layouts and in the process, discovered how duplexes with custom-designed swimming pools were selling for a premium price. This has ultimately sealed their decision to add swimming pools into their homes.

outdoor-swimming-pool

We began the construction of the custom-designed block pool with a total knockdown of the old home standing at the lot. As it used to be a single unit, Kate and Luke’s team had to overhaul the property completely.

After the total knockdown, our team at Blue Haven began excavating the inground pool and started steel fixing, plumbing, and pouring concrete. We needed to run this process quickly as house construction had to start as fast as possible which would restrict access to the backyard. Additionally, Kate and Luke were racing against the clock in their e-series – The Build Game; a renovation series that was featured on realestate.com.au.

plants-outdoor-swimming-pool

Building a duplex with two swimming pools was considerably stretching because we wanted to maximise the limited space. But as we brainstormed, we realised that the best place for pool installation is against the property’s wall division.

We moved forward by starting with one big shell for the two concrete block pools and added a wall down the middle as a divider. With a commitment to excellence, our team only used the best materials to ensure that the inground pool will last long.

swimming-pool-glass-divider

Our team at Blue Haven had a share of obstacles since the beginning of the construction. The site where we needed to build a pool had a significant volume of sand which made the process both challenging and dangerous. Not to mention, we needed to build two swimming pools in a duplex only within four days.

But as we always say at Blue Haven, nothing is ever too challenging for us. Our solution-based team was able to move fast and eventually overcame all the roadblocks coming our way.

This project was truly bold and intricate with its location and duplex structure. But despite the roadblocks we faced, our team’s collaboration with Sydney Swans, especially Kate’s attention to detail, made their vision into a reality.

The outdoor pool was exquisitely done, and the project all came together. We believe that this is the result of our dedication and Kate’s expertise, who was recently featured in realestate.com.au with a monthly readership of 12 million people. To top it off, our meticulous, comprehensive planning and open communication allowed us to save our clients nearly $30,000.

They were immensely impressed with our work ethic and the outcome, which our swimming pool builders delivered on time, on budget, and on point. Currently, the owners are enjoying their KEEP lavish duplex inground pool, which has become the home’s beating heart and sold the SELL house for a great profit. Our vacant block pool or duplex pool installation package starts from $19,990, and you can reserve it for only $349. Senator Pools is committed to catering to each and every clients desire for their dream pool setup. This means working closely with clients so as to bring their idea to life.

With this specific project the client requested that their pool & spa is both quirky and elegant. Senator Pools was able to cater to this and make it possible thanks to a number of design opportunities due to the elevation and slope of the backyard.

Senator pools was able to elevate the pool above ground level – giving it a sense of place within the courtyard and house. This positioning was especially important due to the client requesting that “It’s to be the centerpiece of our rear courtyard”.

The combination of spa, pool and balance tank, provides for a cascade of water over all three elements drawing attention to the wonderful design. This was made more apparent by the use of glazing so as to highlight each of the three design elements.

Two rolling lounges take prime position within the spa. These contoured lounges are cast within the construction of the spa and finished with the select Ezzari tile. Our clients were asked to sit on the lounges prior to tiling to ensure we had captured the required contour. Gas heating and automation complete the delivery of the pool and spa.

Our clients enjoyed an active role throughout the design phase, from the initial concepts through to works commencing on site. This interaction with our clients is paramount in creating the desired outcome for their outdoor living space.

This dramatic infinity-edge pool and spa were built on a very steep block to take advantage of the beautiful views of Brisbane Water, on the New South Wales Central Coast, and the surrounding bushland.

The homeowners requested a low-maintenance pool they can use all year that makes the most of the vista and bush setting. “This is the owners’ holiday house and they do a lot of entertaining when they are there,” explains Zeb Rodrigues, owner of Artesian Pools, who built the stunning pool-and-spa combination.

The 11.7m-long Bisazza-tiled infinity pool can be accessed from the house level and has a large adjacent entertaining area inside the pool enclosure. The spa, meanwhile, is slightly raised. Frameless glass pool fencing was used so that it does not detract from the spectacular views.

A ledge features at the deep end of pool so that swimmers can easily look over the edge and admire the perfect water view. Artesian Pools created a cantilevered design with infinity edges on two sides. The water runs through the river pebbles in the dry gutters and down to a retention tank under the pool, and the water is then pumped back to the pool.

Designing a pool that is both functional and a feature of the property is very important to the team at Artesian Pools. Creating something that complements the home with the best use of available space and adds value to the property is integral to the company when carrying out any design.

Artesian Pools was started by Eusebio Rodrigues (Zeb) in 1994. They work on 25 to 30 pools a year all over Sydney and country NSW, with a focus on quality, not quantity. The team specialises in the design and construction of concrete swimming pools and renovation of existing concrete pools. Their commitment to customers is to deliver a beautiful swimming pool using the best materials and high-quality workmanship. When you deal with Artesian Pools you deal directly with the builder, from the quotation through to the construction process and handover. “We spend a lot of time with the client ensuring the pool will suit their requirements and become a feature of their home,” says Zeb.

Artesian Pools is a member of the Master Builder’s Association (MBA) and has won many awards in recent years, including in the MBA excellence in Swimming Pools Awards – Residential Spas category in 2018. In the 2017 awards, Artesian won the Pool Renovations up to $50,000 category and was a joint winner of the Traditional or Geometric Concrete Pools $50,001-$100,000 award.

In the 2016 awards, Artesian won an award for Master Builders Association Excellence in Swimming Pools – Lap Pools, and the Master Builders Association Excellence in Swimming Pools – Residential Spas.
