This state-of-the-art lap pool may be located on the roof, but three impressive windows ensure its presence is felt throughout
the home in extraordinary fashion

As inner-city blocks are getting smaller, designers are making use of the airspace above by adding second or third storeys, vertical gardens and rooftop entertaining areas. With some design ingenuity, building up can ensure homeowners have all the amenities they desire regardless of their land size. The designers of this home and pool took this concept one step further by positioning the pool on the roof of the home.

The unconventional layout is a true design triumph, with three pool windows connecting the pool to the living areas below, doubling as skylights to the hallway, living room and kitchen. One panel faces the entrance of the home, creating a striking visual feature to welcome and surprise guests. “The cleverly positioned windows provide light in the contemporary living space,” says Chris Jackson, managing director of Aquarius Pools. “The pool provides a stunning water feature from many aspects of the residence, including the outdoor courtyard, the upstairs family room and from the home’s entrance.”

Complex engineering was required to suspend the pool within the ceiling of the house. “The pool is supported by four steel columns which are connected at the top by two steel beams that traverse the pool floor and support the weight of the entire pool,” explains Chris. “When full of water, the pool weighs approximately 50 tonnes. The pool walls contain eight times more reinforced steel than the average pool and act as enormous concrete beams to allow the pool to span 7.5m between the two steel beams.”

An Aqualink in-house system provides fingertip control of the pool from inside the home or remotely using an iPad or iPhone. This state-of-the-art pool design was recently recognised at the 2016 SPASA National Awards, winning Pool of the Year. The pool also won Pool of the Year at the SPASA Vic awards, as well Most Innovative Pool and Best Concrete Lap Pool.

Thinking outside the square can lead to spectacular results. This is showcased perfectly by this amazing pool built by Artesian Pools

While most homeowners lean towards in-ground swimming pools, this design goes to show that with a little creative thinking you can create something truly stunning.

This 14m x 2.5m rooftop lap pool, built by Artesian Pools, appears to almost hang from the sky. By building the pool on the roof, the owners and their visitors can enjoy the ocean and city views from both indoors and out.

Lined with a New Zealand White Pebble interior, the pool has a light, almost iridescent, colour which subtly contrasts with the sky overhead. Travertine for the waterline and coping adds a neutral touch to the design, while glass fencing finishes off the outdoor space with uninterrupted views and a clean, modern feel.

Artesian Pools is a Sydney company specialising in creating pools that are both unique and stunning in design concept. They offer the most sophisticated range of finishes, detailed workmanship and quality equipment. Artesian Pools is owned and operated by Eusebio “Zeb” Rodrigues, a licensed builder with more than 20 years experience in the pool industry.

When you deal with Artesian Pools you deal directly with the builder — from the quotation through to the construction. Artesian Pools can show you a large portfolio of designs and finishes, and work with you to create your own unique pool or construct your pool to a specific design.

Artesian’s slogan is “the ability and experience behind the art”, which this pool clearly illustrates. The company’s standards are the highest and they are entirely committed to your new pool.

The company specialises in working effectively with clients to find out what it is they are envisioning for the space, then suggest available options and ideas to suit the project and individual client. Artesian Pools prides itself on having the proficiency to take on challenging landscapes and creating fully tiled concrete in-ground swimming pools.

Artesian Pools is committed to providing quality luxury pools for its clients, with the unique designs becoming artistic additions to the home.

Reaching heady heights, this world-class outdoor design is the epitome of opulence.

Perfectly positioned to capture panoramic views of the Adelaide plains, this infinity-edge pool looks as if it is floating amid the clouds. Flanked by timber decking and mere steps away from a stunning outdoor dining and kitchen area, the pool forms the centrepiece of a space that is nothing short of luxurious.

Having travelled the globe, staying at many exclusive hotels and resorts from which they drew inspiration, the owners knew they wanted a sleek, modern design with strong geometric lines. They also knew that being able to both relax and entertain was important, so Alex Pritchard and Rob Galvin from The Galvin Group set about designing a world-class outdoor living and entertaining zone.

The fully automated pool, which has a swim-out ledge, is clad in white mosaic tiles and features multi-coloured LED pool lights. The coping is of Western Grey granite, which is the same stone used for the paving. Adjacent to the pool is a large cantilevered deck that juts out towards the city lights. Under the deck, which was built of ebony-stained Pacific teak, the pool equipment room is hidden from view, along with large-capacity storage and workbenches.

Just a short distance from the pool is a steam room, massage room and change room facilities, emulating the opulence you would expect of a five-star hotel. The outdoor kitchen is equally sumptuous. It incorporates bar fridges, an oven, a built-in barbecue and wok burner, an ice maker and a dishwasher. The benchtops are of polished Western Grey granite, adding to the lavish look and visually linking the kitchen to the rest of the outdoor space.

The clean, modern lines of the overall design were juxtaposed with sculptural plantings, such as mature dragon’s blood trees and cycads. As the block is north-facing and takes on the full punishment of a hot summer, the plants needed to be tough and water wise, not just aesthetically appealing.

The biggest challenge faced by The Galvin Group was the construction of the pool. As it had to be built 5m above natural ground level, the pool needed to be engineered to be supported by a floating concrete beam and pier system founded on natural sloping bedrock. Despite the difficulties of building on a steep slope, thanks to The Galvin Group’s 30 years’ experience tackling tricky projects, construction proceeded without a hitch.

Designed and built by Sean Lynch of Malibu Pools & Landscapes, this pool is a breathtaking example of engineering and contemporary flair. An infinity-edge pool and reflection pond concept has been created over three levels of this Brisbane home, showcasing the panoramic views of the city as well as creating a stunning entrance to the property.

On the top level is a 10-metre lap pool that runs alongside the entertaining area of the house. The adjoining wading area has a series of stepping stones, which adds a resort feel to the urban surrounds.

The multi-tiered water feature begins on a feature wall behind the lap pool. Water spills over the stacked-stone panels into the lap pool and then cascades over three more levels of stacked-stone and reflection ponds. This dynamic water feature is transformed at night by LED lights in each of the reflection ponds, turning the water from a light turquoise to an azure blue.

The pool also boasts the latest in in-floor cleaning technology, with 100 per cent surface coverage. There are pop-up jets on the floors of all levels and a separate filtration system and pressure pumps, all of which means the pool and ponds clean themselves automatically every day.

Malibu Pools & Landscapes was established 35 years ago and is now one of the leading pool design and construction companies in the country, winning several industry awards. Sean Lynch has been the managing architect at the company for more than five years. His background in environmental architecture brings a unique perspective to design and construction, as well as offering clients the latest in green design practices.

Focusing on a limited number of projects each year, Malibu Pools & Landscapes offers a complete package for pool and landscape projects. This begins with an on-site consultation with Sean Lynch to discuss the client’s needs, the environment and the design brief. A virtual 3D design is then made, allowing every project to be created, modified and swum through before construction starts.

Malibu Pools & Landscapes uses only in-house trade staff, guaranteeing a professional service and lasting quality of construction. The company services the south-east Queensland region.

Obstacles often inspire great feats of creativity, and such was the case with this pool.

Freestyle Pools 2.1 Freestyle Pools 2.2

The owners wanted a pool built over the roof of the garage. This raised several difficulties: first, the roof on the garage had to be strong enough to support the pool. Second, the pool had to be made absolutely leak-proof.

After reinforcing the garage roof for strength, a waterproof membrane was placed over it and pool construction began. What a result – an attractive swimming pool and a stunning water feature that runs from the property entrance to the front door. The unique colour of the inside tiles works well with this location, as it perfectly complements the surrounding grass and sandstone wall. The tiles selected were Biazza Glass Mosaic in terracotta red with a gold flash.

FreeStyle Pools also directed much attention to preserving the positive features of this location, specifically, the impressive views of the beach. For this reason, the pool fence was constructed of frameless architectural glass so as not to impede the view. On the other side, the tree-lined wall creates a privacy barrier from the neighbours.
