“As part of a new build, we wanted to create a statement kitchen — a space that stood out but didn’t overwhelm. As it is an open-plan layout, a seamless flow into the living area and cabinetry that matched was essential to the design. Despite the dramatic black and white kitchen contrast of the cabinetry and island, there is a sense of tranquility and openness in the space.”

“An informal dining spot also had to be incorporated into the design, along with a computer nook and organisational space for appointments and invitations. The cantilevered benchtop allows for family and guests to sit on both sides for casual eating and entertaining. The design at its core is functional, cutting out the typical pantry run by offering easy access to spices and oils within the cooking area. The fully opening doors of the appliance cabinet ensure complete access to its contents while it acts as a display piece with its gorgeous matching black internals. The combination of near black and white is spectacular, generating a calming ‘night sky’ effect of the space that feels simultaneously close and far, and the white provides definition to the area. The soft grey benchtops reflect the light that floods into the kitchen from the cleverly designed skylight and LED strip lighting to provide excellent visibility for food preparation — a feature the cooking-loving homeowner enjoys. From the muted splendour of the carefully chosen colour scheme to the highly functional work spaces, this kitchen is a masterpiece of design.”

EXPERT TIP: A cantilevered benchtop can offer dual functions of food preparation and entertaining.

We love the black laminate internals of the cabinetry.

Classic design meets contemporary kitchen https://www.completehome.com.au/kitchens/classic-design-contemporary-kitchen.html Fri, 21 Sep 2018 04:33:22 +0000 https://www.completehome.com.au/?p=46629 The contemporary kitchen’s black and white colour scheme lends the space presence and personality, while creating a light, fresh feel.

“This home’s previous kitchen was a very dark timber space in a classic style. It featured an awkward angled island bench that took up too much of the area for the small amount of storage it provided. Though the kitchen was quite functional, the new homeowners wanted to replace it as they were dissatisfied with the layout.”

“The homeowners requested a Hamptons-style kitchen which would have the added benefit of being exceptionally functional. The end result is an on-trend kitchen featuring the best of classic design with the benefits of new technology. The new, contemporary kitchen is refined and elegant. The kitchen’s galley style offers a neat work triangle and the most efficient storage possibilities. The island bench was straightened during the renovation to open up the corner which housed the old pantry, thereby increasing the kitchen’s spaciousness. Belling appliances were chosen for their functional nature. They are modern in appearance, giving the kitchen a transitional feel. The homeowners loved the idea of a black freestanding cooker and canopy, so the kitchen was designed around these appliances. The microwave has been hidden in the appliance cabinet behind the bi-fold doors to encourage a neat, seamless aesthetic. The kitchen’s black and white colour scheme lends the space presence and personality, while creating a light, fresh feel. The existing timber floors were stained a darker shade, in line with the Hamptons-style aesthetic. The modern conveniences of the open-plan area and island bench mean this kitchen works well as the centre of attention for stylish entertaining while remaining subtle and understated in nature.”

EXPERT TIP: Fixing the placement of an awkwardly sited kitchen island during a renovation can do wonders for the flow of the room.

We love the kitchen’s Hamptons-style aesthetic.

Old meets new in this classic kitchen by Smith and Smith, where all elements complement each other perfectly.

The joinery was paramount in turning this single-fronted Victorian home with small separate rooms into a spacious and grand open-plan entertainer’s dream. Centre stage as you enter the rear living area, the kitchen blends seamlessly with its surrounds, yet stands proud as the focal point for family living and entertaining.

The classic style of the Shaker panel doors works perfectly with the cutting-edge Neolith Estatuario stone on the island and splashback, as well as the industrial accents of the Antique Black hardware, wrought-iron window panes, chunky pendant lights and rustic stools. The end panels were designed to mimic the internal barn doors of the pantry. A small yet very functional walk-in butler’s pantry, all in the same high-quality finishes as the kitchen, increases the kitchen footprint dramatically.

Storage space was key, so cabinetry was built in under the stairs, designed to mirror the panelling. This kitchen’s classic overtones, paired with its industrial edge, succeed in creating an aesthetic perfect for both entertaining and day-to-day family life.
