Expert attention to detail and a focus on premium materials elevate this kitchen to a luxurious space that complements this mid-century-style family home.

With a brief to open the kitchen area by removing a heavy brick island back wall and a wall between the meals and family room, the formerly enclosed layout has been transformed into the ultimate open-plan retreat.

Commonly used in mid-century design, blackwood timber is the standout feature of this space, with stunning accents beautifully executed throughout. A slatted solid timber screen creates an endpoint for the kitchen while providing an open barrier that is a nod to traditional mid-century design. Accentuating the natural timber, LED strip lighting has been installed to the underside of the overhead cabinets and custom blackwood bar light.

The curved island bench with blackwood half-round battens creates added texture and interest and includes a cleverly concealed push-to-open wine storage rack inside. Additional storage solutions include Blumotion inner drawers in the pantry, a VS COR Flex unit in the corner base cupboard and drawer inserts throughout.

Every detail has been executed to perfection, from the integrated dishwasher that keeps the base cabinetry uniform with white fronts and custom blackwood handles, to the exposed flue that has been painted to seamlessly match the wall colour.

The mid-century touches and perfectly proportioned floorplan of this stunning space create a visual link between the kitchen and living and family rooms, and tie the design to the backyard beyond.

A light, natural colour palette and integrated or concealed appliances magnify a slight kitchen that was named the KBDI Winner in the Designer Small Kitchens SA section and the 2019 HIA Winner in the Renovated Kitchen up to $35K category.

The homeowners were looking for a kitchen with a twist — something a little different to reflect their personalities and the quirky vibe of the 1960s abode they call home. The kitchen’s scant parameters inspired a design solution that focused on maximising bench space and concealing appliances wherever possible. The integration of the fridge/freezer and dishwasher maximises the visual balance, so the space appears streamlined. Similarly, the microwave rests on the underside of the island bench, out of sight but functional as ever and within easy reach.

White Smeg appliances blend in with the door and drawer fronts, extending the illusion of space and producing a harmonious palette infiltrated by hoop pine plywood feature framework. The incorporation of framework provided an opportunity for a clever notch-out handle detail, thus negating the need for handles on drawer and door fronts, adding to the clean, detailed look. Additionally, the plywood lends a warm textural element to the otherwise stark kitchen.

The proximity of the kitchen to the open-plan living and dining area meant there was no need for seating at the island. This fact has safeguarded the kitchen against visual clutter and freed up floor space. Open-tray storage and open shelving above the fridge break up the expanse of white and soften the grid structure, while supplying endearing nooks for special pieces and useful items.

Concrete-look stone benchtops add earthiness and link to the tile splashback. The shade of the domed tiles is akin to the benchtops and proffers a textured visual connection between the two elements. The tiling stretches to the top of the wall adjacent to the splashback and around the window to balance out negative space.
White, bright and wonderful, this SpaceCraft Joinery kitchen is the whole package.

Turn up the gas and grab an apron as we delve into this earthy cooking space. Cocooned in concrete-look tiled floors and birch plywood-sheeted walls and ceiling, the space is purposefully industrial, which becomes evident when appraising its celebration of earthy materials.

In step with the Scandi/industrial style of the home, the main kitchen and pantry zone exude affluent minimalism with a mix of birch ply framework and black traceless doors, drawer fronts and panels.

The kitchen’s love affair with plywood extends to the shadowline and framing details, adding an opulent finish to the refined kitchen. Saddle tan leather pulls with brass core and matching wrapped leather slimline handles mingle with a Star Mini pull out mixer PVD in brushed bronze, LED strip task lighting to the underside of overheads, and a black Smeg Pyrolitic double oven.

Open shelving and a concealed rangehood enhance spacious, unimpeded elegance. Concrete benchtops are robust and moody, while the sink is located at one end of the lengthy kitchen island, leaving abundant bench space for preparing and dining or working and studying, whatever the occasion requires.

Green and lean, the vertical tiled splashback disperses vibrancy to the colour palette and highlights the Smeg-endowed cooking space. Decorative designer timber work comes into play with the black overhead framework with exposed plywood edging. A custom-made kitchen deserves to be lit with precision, and the Long John 5 pendant from Fred’s International does a fine job assisting the LED lighting scheme. Industrial and homely, there’s so much to love about this SpaceCraft kitchen.
