We go behind the scenes of this light-filled terrace, which was showcased on hit renovation show, The Block

You may have been wowed by the sprawling green wall or perhaps the outdoor entertaining/dining area. But opinions aside, it’s safe to say this South Yarra apartment block is now a greener place thanks to Inge Jabara Landscapes, taken on for the job by Northern Beaches couple Josh and Charlotte. The aesthetic of the space revolves around Scandinavian and Australian influences — think lashings of timber combined with warm =QUOTE=and soft furnishings.

The area serves as the formal entrance to the apartment, the goal being to create maximum impact that would set the standard for the rest of the home. “South Yarra demands a touch of luxury and we wanted to design this on a whole new level,” says Inge. “Having grown up around South Yarra, it was easy for me to design this space. It is minimal, however there’s a wow factor when you’re standing inside it.” A seven-metre blackbutt timber wall embodies the aforementioned “wow factor”.

Inge and her team encountered various challenges along the way, including being hit with tight and nearly impossible deadlines, unfinished walls, and the fact that their staircase (and access) was taken away on day two of the build. But despite being faced with never-ending hurdles, the team persevered with the green wall, erecting scaffolding to install an automatic watering system and ivy that will continue to grow and cascade down the timber. “At night there is romantic lighting and a glow that can be seen from all levels,” says Inge. “The cells that the plants are in will restrict their growth as there is only so much root room. I personally installed the irrigation system to make sure there would be no faults. As my client Josh said, ‘It’s The Block — there are always going to be challenges.’”

Equipped with a barbecue and wine fridge, sitting area and dining table, there’s plenty of space for outdoor entertaining in this terrace that flows on nicely to the entry foyer of the apartment. Prunus lusitanica, box hedges, oak leaf hydrangeas and grape vine create a harmonious feel in the outdoor space, the greenery balancing with all the modern amenities you’d expect in an up-market terrace.

“In this day and age apartments are getting smaller, however the green element is getting more vertical if we continue to make sure it is still a part of the project,” says Inge.

Awarded an impressive 28.5 out of 30 for the reveal, Josh and Charlotte’s terrace was only narrowly beaten by all stars Dea and Darren, who received the perfect score. The apartment eventually sold for $2.2 million, delivering a profit of $810,000.

It’s safe to say this stunning terrace played a big role in enticing buyers to pay the big bucks to live in a slice of South Yarra paradise.

Suzi & Vonni: Entertainer’s Kitchen

This Good Guys kitchen by Vonni and Suzi is spacious yet dramatic and is a true entertainer’s delight.

With matt black dominating the monochrome colour palette, dual Silestone benchtops in various colours, textures and thicknesses lighten the mood and add a real sense of luxury. Particularly noteworthy is the 12mm benchtop in Carbono with its sparkled effect and integrated sink, which is formed from the same material and befits this show-stopping space.

Maintaining a sleek look throughout, the girls have chosen integrated handles, shadowline detail and state-of-the-art integrated Bosch appliances, including an Induction cooktop within the island and a built-in coffee machine for a touch of sophistication. To optimise storage, there are pull-out pantries, corner carousels for the hard-to-reach spaces, and deep drawers with glass sides.

The moody drama of Suzi and Vonni’s kitchen — and thematic throughout their entire apartment — is softened in the laundry by introducing white cabinetry and appliances, open shelving with plywood edging and a durable laminate surface with its realistic timber-look finish.

Dean & Shay: Contemporary

Shay and Dean switched their penthouse kitchen and living rooms, creating a bright, neutral and contemporary kitchen design.

The modern colour palette is an on-trend blend of black, white and timber grain with copper accents, featuring contrasting benchtops in Blanco Orion on the island — angled to the shape of the room — and Cemento Spa with a suede finish on the back bench. The mirrored splashback and vertical garden cleverly bring the outdoors in, with the eat-in area making the most of the city views.

Created for the entertainer and foodie, this kitchen will excite home chefs with its array of DeLonghi appliances, including dual ovens, integrated coffee machine and two dishwashers.

The gold Oliveri sink is a statement on its own, while the hidden butler’s pantry completes the design by doubling as storage for small appliances as well as a preparation area. Additional storage solutions, such as a pull-out pantry and LeMans corner carousel, make organisation in this kitchen a breeze.

The penthouse glamour continues in the nearby laundry with a 20mm Silestone benchtop, black-glass splashback, artistically angled white subway tiles and stylish black fittings.

Ebony & Luke: Contemporary shaker

Light and bright, Ebony and Luke’s Good Guys kitchen is a contemporary classic, beautifully blending the old with the new.

Removing a wall allowed them to open their kitchen space, achieving a great sense of flow to the connecting dining, living and laundry areas. They paired classic white Shaker profile doors with contrasting shadowline detail. The new-style black timber and copper handles add a sense of cohesion and sophistication. The Silestone benchtops in Ariel are cleverly angled to complement the shape of the room, completing this calm and tranquil space.

Deep glass-sided drawers plus vertical internal drawers either side of the oven offer fantastic storage space. The additional sink, hidden behind bifold doors, makes for a fantastic prep area for entertaining. Add in the array of Electrolux appliances — from steam oven to induction cooktop — and you’ve got this stunning, timeless take on a Shaker kitchen design.

Whitney and Andy: Scandi/Industrial

With help from The Good Guys Kitchens, Whitney and Andy have designed
a stunning Scandinavian-inspired kitchen with a rustic, industrial twist.
The Scandi palette of white and Ballina Natural Oak timber grain is complemented by a new colour exclusive to The Good Guys Kitchens: Cinder, a stunning and on-trend grey gloss. The freestanding black Smeg cooker and matching rangehood, brass-look handles, and painted exposed brick splashback add an industrial edge.

Featuring for the first time on The Block is the Silestone White Storm benchtop with a uniquely inverted sharknose profile and suede-effect finish. Contrasting this is the 60mm marble-inspired island benchtop in Lyra, angled to complement the triangular shaped kitchen and making it feel spacious.

For the organised chef, there is a dedicated spice drawer and knife rack, while herbs are at the ready with the in-built island herb garden. For the coffee connoisseur, an integrated Smeg coffee machine sits proudly at the ready above the microwave oven and next to the Samsung fridge — all in stainless steel for an added industrial edge. Deep soft-close drawers with new glass sides add a sense
of sophistication — the final touch to this entertainer’s kitchen.

Whitney and Andy’s nearby laundry echoes the rustic elements of the kitchen
as the industrial theme is further realised within this space.

Caro and Kingi: Urban

Caro and Kingi’s spacious Good Guys kitchen adopts an industrial, urban style evident in the use of concrete and a grey, black and white palette. Squaring their room, they created a classic rectangular kitchen, cleverly transforming an alcove into a hidden butler’s pantry.

Dual-tone cabinetry in Super Matt Black and Essendon Serene is bold, while the benchtop in Silestone Blanco Zeus Suede adds depth and texture. Black bar handles blend into the cabinetry, providing an almost handle-free =QUOTE=look. Graffiti-style artwork on the back of the island adds a South Yarra element and the innovative, integrated iPad within the splashback will appeal to tech-savvy buyers.

Functional storage solutions are in abundance, with pull-out pantries built into wall cabinets and lower cabinets opening to reveal internal drawers — a clever way to achieve a symmetrical finish in a highly practical kitchen space. Fisher & Paykel offer added value in the form of an integrated CoolDrawer™, along with other fully integrated appliances that give this kitchen its sleek appearance.

Caro and Kingi’s timeless, streamlined and black-and-white aesthetic also carries into their nearby laundry, creating a sense of continuity between spaces.
