A simple guide to help you understand the differences between the types of pools available

You’ve made the decision to install a pool on your property — great! Now you need to decide what type of pool to install. We know there is a lot to get your head around, so we’ve put together this simple guide to the types of pools available so you can find the best option for your site, lifestyle, budget and timeframe.

Above-ground pools

Often chosen due to the quick turnaround between purchase and installation, an above-ground swimming pool can be installed within a day and used that night. As the name suggests, above-ground pools sit on top of the ground and don’t require land excavation. They are prefabricated, meaning they’re built offsite and delivered to your property complete. Above-ground pools can be either vinyl-lined or fibreglass and come in a range of shapes, sizes, colours and styles.

This type of swimming pool is often cheaper than inground options because they are easier and quicker to install (requiring no or minimal excavation). Above-ground pools are often an economical and logical choice for use on a sloping block, where the water level of the pool can sit at the same level as the ground floor of the home.

An added bonus of an above-ground pool is that it’s transportable, meaning you can sell it or take it with you if you move house.

In-ground pools

In-ground swimming pools sit below the ground and require excavation. They are a more expensive option than above-ground pools as they require more time to plan and construct or install, depending on the type of pool you choose.

You may wish to choose a prefabricated fibreglass or vinyl-lined pool that can be delivered and installed in the hole in the ground, or a concrete pool which is custom-built to fit your space. With in-ground pools, a fair bit of planning and preparation is needed, particularly when underground pipes need to be moved to fit the pool in the desired space. However the effort is often worth the challenges as on standard, flat blocks, in-ground pools tend to make the space feel more open.

Crystal Pools

Concrete pools

Often the costliest option and the most time consuming to build, a concrete pool requires planning, designing and building as they’re completely customised to suit your space and lifestyle. This means you have unlimited options in terms of size, depth, shape, colour and style. You may wish to incorporate a negative edge, a wading area for children, a spa, steps, benches, jets, a water feature, curves, straight edges — the options really are endless. The interior of a concrete pool can be finished in ceramic tiles, pebblecrete, coloured quartz, epoxy resin paints, or vinyl lining.

With a concrete pool there is no pool manufacturer — your builder creates the pool from scratch — so you are reliant on them to deliver a quality product that works well. It’s therefore crucial to do your research and choose a builder you trust and who fully understands your pool requirements.

Fibreglass pools

Fibreglass pools are prefabricated, meaning they are built in a factory and delivered to your property on a truck. They have a very smooth surface area and can be finished in a range of colours. One of the main benefits of choosing a fibreglass pool is the low maintenance required to keep it clean and functional.

The fibreglass surface, known as gelcoat, is non-porous so there are fewer areas for algae to grow. For the same reason, fewer chemicals are needed to keep the pool healthy. This type of pool is very quick to install, usually two days, and is long lasting due to the fact there is no liner or added interior (just the durable gelcoat finish). The initial cost of a fibreglass pool is higher than a vinyl-lined pool but less than a concrete pool. One of the main reasons people choose not to install a fibreglass pool is because they can’t find a shape and size to suit their space. It’s not possible for you to change the size, shape or depth of a fibreglass pool, so it’s a matter of searching and finding one that suits your requirements.

Vinyl-lined pools

This type of pool is the least expensive to buy and install. Vinyl-lined pools are available as standard models, however the shape, size and depth can also be customised to fit your space and intended use. The surface of vinyl-lined pools is smooth, durable and usually resistant to algae. Despite being the cheapest option, vinyl-lined pools do require their liners to be replaced every five to nine years (which is usually around $4000). Depending on how long you intend to have the pool, this cost can add up over the years.

Lap pools

While a lap pool doesn’t have a specific size range, generally it is much longer than it is wide, allowing the user to swim laps. Usually the width of a lap pool starts at around 2.5m wide and the length can be anywhere from 8m to 25m (or more). Generally the depth is consistent throughout, however some owners may wish to add a deeper end to add flexibility to the pool’s usage, for example a deeper area for kids to jump into. Lap pools can be custom-built concrete pools, vinyl-lined or fibreglass. Lap pools are becoming an increasingly popular choice for metropolitan homeowners due to their ability to fit into the often unused space to the side of a house, without dominating the backyard.

Swim spas

A swim spa is a pool with jets that creates a current for the user to swim against for fitness purposes. This type of pool is suitable for someone who likes the idea of utilising their pool for fitness, but lacks the space for a lap pool or full-sized pool. Most swim spas have heaters that enable them to double as spas, and some even have seats around the edges for relaxing. Swim spas are purchased as a complete unit and installed into the ground, above ground or integrated into a deck.

Flolux

Flolux

Plunge pools

A plunge pool is a small pool that is deep enough for the whole body to be submerged for a cool, refreshing experience. Traditionally, plunge pools were used to cool off and invigorate the senses after a sauna or spa, however due to their small size, they’re becoming a popular pool choice for people with small inner-city backyards or courtyards.

Typically a plunge pool is a concrete pool that’s been custom-built and which also doubles as a visual feature — often with beautiful ceramic tiles, lighting and/or other eye-catching design features. Most plunge pool owners will opt to use more expensive, stand-out tiles than a cheaper tile or pool interior as the overall cost isn’t much higher due to the small surface area of the pool.

Shipping-container pools

Relatively new on the scene, shipping container pools gained popularity in 2017 when Sticks and Wombat installed one on The Block Elsternwick. These pools are a fibreglass pool insert that sits inside a shipping container. They are put together in a factory so there is less on-site work required. They’re very quick to install and are a cost-effective option. They sit above ground so they’re ideal for homes on sloping blocks or when access from the second storey is preferred. Otherwise the pool works well when accessed from the ground floor with stairs and a deck built around it.

This sophisticated garden has an unmistakable aura of serenity and a classic look that is truly timeless

The formal garden is always very much in favour. Defined by its sense of symmetry and respect for form and balance, the formal garden is a place of elegance and calm. A formal-style garden, moreover, transcends fleeting trends, ensuring the design never dates nor looks out of place, leading to longevity.

Of course you don’t have to fully replicate a traditional formal garden to be able to enjoy the beauty and sense of serenity this classical design style brings. Just adapt the elements that suit your individual space, being sure to remain true to the underlying principles of symmetry and balance, which is precisely what A Total Concept has done here.

A Total Concept

“The outdoor spaces for this formal project were designed in a simplistic formal style that complements the beautiful heritage residence. With both elegance and endurance in mind, only quality materials were used,” says John Storch, landscape architect and founder of Sydney-based A Total Concept.

“Immediately adjacent to the home we located an elevated, covered travertine-paved entertaining area with barbecue facilities. From here, steps lead down to the formal lawns and swimming pool, ensuring ease of access and establishing a visual link.”

The interior surface of the pool is clad in translucent turquoise glass tiles that cause the water to shimmer and sparkle. With practicality in mind, the pool has an extended bench seat for relaxation and is long enough to swim laps.

From the raised entertaining terrace, the views towards the pool are stunning and have been maximised with the use of frameless glass fencing. For continuity, the sandstone-capped rendered masonry walls tie back to the home.

A Total Concept

“The pool and formal lawns are set within luxuriant landscaped gardens brimming with an intentionally simple and traditional palette of evergreen border and hedging plants that does not detract from the main features of the home itself,” says John.

Planting plays an essential role in the formal garden. Clipped evergreen hedges, whether to border a path, lawn or garden bed give a garden a formal feel. Hedges can also provide shelter from the wind, act as a privacy screen, or gracefully define a boundary.

A Total Concept

“Arbours covered in vines delineate each lawn room within the garden areas,” adds John. “The viability of the gardens are ensured by composting, heavy mulching, and a water-wise, fully-automatic drip irrigation system linked to large water storage tanks.”

The seeming simplicity of the design and judicious use of premium-quality materials visually unifies the overall project and adds immeasurable value to the property, creating “a total concept” that perfectly showcases the design skills of John and his team.

From contemporary homes to traditional residences, and from small city courtyards to large country estates, not to mention boutique and resort-style developments, A Total Concept can help with any design project anywhere in Australia. A Total Concept is a well-established, award-winning landscape architecture practice that specialises in creating beautiful outdoor rooms and stylish cabanas, expertly integrated swimming pools, and gorgeous gardens.

A Total Concept

“We craft striking, cost-effective, functional spaces and bring together all aspects of your project from consultations, selections, approvals, construction designs, and recommending quality contractors to undertake the work, to the total management of your project,” explains John. “A Total Concept bridges the gap between the inside and out by providing a total service that creates a seamless fusion between home and garden for our clients. If you want a superior design solution, speak to A Total Concept.”

Here, the expert team at A Total Concept has succeeded in creating a stunning environment for the owners — one that reflects the practice’s philosophy of “A Total Concept” and adds immeasurably to the lifestyle amenity and value of the property. This is a garden that generations to come can appreciate and enjoy.

This essential element can add light and life to a home. It’s emotive and tactile. It can promote health and happiness, focus and productivity. And it’s right beneath your feet

Words Carrol Baker

When designing internal spaces, our thoughts often turn to room layout and design, fixtures and fittings, colour palettes and other textural components. But the flooring you choose is just as important.

It impacts on the psychology of a room, and influences our impressions and emotional response to a space. If you’ve ever stepped into a room and it seemed cool and uninviting, or made you feel warm and cosy, it might be because of the flooring, not the temperature within.

Mind your materials

From the soft sumptuous feel of a natural fibre rug or carpet to the warmth of timber or the cool comfort of tile, your choice of flooring really is important in more ways than you might think.

Milk and Sugar
This organic-toned rug has charismatic appeal. Featured is the Lake rug in Dijon. milkandsugar.com.au

James Pilcher from MILEHAM Architecture, Construction and Development says when making a decision about flooring, it’s a two-fold process. First, ensure the flooring type you are considering is fit for purpose. “Look at the use of space to determine the most feasible flooring material to use. For example, will the space have heavy foot traffic? Then when you choose the material, decide what sort of atmosphere or feeling you want to create in that space.”

James says this is important because the same type of flooring can have a different feeling to another with similar properties. “For example, white polished tiles might create a cool sterile feeling, but a matt natural-stone tile feels warm underfoot,” he points out.” Or a highly polished timber floor will feel completely different to one with a rustic finish.

No matter what flooring material you select, it is a long-term investment and will add value to your home. Source a good installer who can offer testimonials and who takes pride in superior preparation and quality workmanship, backed by a reasonable guarantee.

Eco-friendly flooring

Living sustainably is a growing collective consciousness that’s becoming part of the fabric of modern living. Making sustainable choices promotes healthier indoor environments, improved wellbeing, and a very real connection to nature.

To make well-informed sustainable decisions, ask questions. Is the product certified, and how? What qualities or attributes make it an eco-friendly choice? Aidan Bourke from Embelton Flooring says when building a new home or renovating, it’s important to understand the environmental and social impact of the materials you choose. “We prioritise eco-conscious choices, which is why all our hybrid flooring is GreenRate Level A certified by Global GreenTag, meaning they meet the highest environmental standards,” he says.

“This certification confirms that Embelton’s hybrid flooring is produced using sustainable practices, is fit for purpose with no need for additional products or modifications, and has low-VOC emissions, making it a safer choice for your home.”

Grain waves

There is a lot on offer when choosing your flooring — particularly if you are aiming for a timber or timber-look floor. Two popular choices are engineered European oak and Australian timber. “The final decision ultimately comes down to personal taste,” notes Aidan.

Australian timber is undeniably beautiful. Aidan says it highlights the natural beauty and distinct character of native species such as blackbutt, spotted gum, Victorian ash and grey ironbark with its unique grains and natural knots. “It’s ideal for those seeking a bold, expressive look, bringing warmth and individuality to any space,” he shares. “European oak provides a refined and adaptable foundation, whether in parquet or wideboard formats, offering endless possibilities for creating your perfect interior style.”

Pick parquetry

If you’re looking to take your living spaces to the next level of sophistication, parquetry flooring is a smart choice. It’s constructed by artfully putting together pieces of timber in beautiful patterns. Your flooring becomes a piece of art you can enjoy every day. Aidan says it’s a type of flooring that is steeped in tradition. “A timeless yet distinctive aesthetic, parquetry such as herringbone or chevron pattern floors have been in fashion for decades and are becoming an increasingly popular choice for Australian homes,” he notes.

Tile after tile

There are three main types of material that are used to manufacture tiles: ceramic, porcelain and stone. This popular flooring option is available in a wide range of colours, shapes and styles with textured finishes so you can create the look and feel you want in your home.

Timber-look tiles and those that have the organic feel and look of stone are making their mark, and beautiful opulent marble is in demand. Tiles that are handcrafted and unique are also sought after; some are vibrant choices, others are more in line with biophilic design, organic with muted blues, greens and greys.

Reece

Tiles are a fabulous go-to option for a host of reasons. They’re highly resilient and durable, so they will perform well in high foot-traffic areas. Tiles are also extremely waterproof so you can have them in any area of your home. They’re also hygienic, versatile, and easy to care for as dust and debris can be easily wiped off.

Touchy feely

Carpeting is soft and luxurious underfoot, non-slip, and it has thermal benefits. The right carpeting can enrich and complement the overall aesthetic of a room, and it also acts as a sound barrier, absorbing noise from neighbouring properties and echoing footsteps. New styles of carpeting are gaining traction in beautiful wool, nylon or polyester. They’re available in myriad colour options, with a multitude of different pile types.

Wool carpet is natural and luxurious and it’s a great option for those with allergies. Wool is also a natural insulator, helping to keep your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Earthy tones and nature-inspired hues shine through in interior design: soft mint and shades of green, light sandy browns and muted greys provide a warm foundation for the home.

Cutting-edge design

Innovative flooring products are evolving and working to deliver modern flooring solutions. James says laminate and hybrid flooring products have both come a long way. “Hybrid, which is a cross between engineered timber and a laminate floorboard, has terrific waterproofing composition,” he notes. “Laminate is a cost-effective flooring option with incredible durability. It also has good resistance to moisture and with improvements in manufacturing, the boards can be made to look like real timber, right down to the sheen level.”

Cork is cool

There are also fabulous flooring materials that were popular in the past, which are now having a revival. David Noordhof from Freeman Group Architects says cork is a flooring material that’s making a welcome comeback. “It was first popular in the Modernist period for its sustainable, eco-friendly qualities and excellent acoustic performance, but it fell out of favour as other materials took precedence,” he says.

The good news is that cork is back, bigger and better than ever. David says there are plenty of reasons why cork is a viable flooring option. “Cork is soft underfoot, providing comfort for long periods of standing or walking, and its natural resilience helps it bounce back from dents and scratches,” he says.

Cork is beautiful, quiet, and available in a host of cool colours to match your space. Hannah McIntyre from Cork Imports says cork improves energy efficiency and can last decades. “You can also feel good knowing that it’s a sustainable and renewable material with a negative carbon footprint,” she notes.

Hannah says their Calais cream cork tiles are proving popular in relaxed and bright spaces. “It’s very on-trend right now,” she says. “Our dark, chocolatey-brown Twist Olive tiles are in demand for moody and cosy areas such as libraries, restaurants, wine bars and cabins.”

Beautiful bamboo

Another flooring option that’s worth considering is bamboo. David says bamboo is highly durable and fast-growing, offering an eco-friendlier alternative to traditional hardwoods. “It has a sleek, contemporary look with a distinct natural texture and is resistant to moisture and pests, making it a great choice for areas such as kitchens or bathrooms,” he shares. “Bamboo’s rapid regrowth makes it a responsible, sustainable option for modern interiors.”

With so much on offer, it can be challenging to narrow your choice. If you are unsure, James suggests always going for a natural look and tone. “When choosing flooring materials, it makes sense to choose something organic with a natural level of sheen,” he advises. “The vivid red carpet you love might look great for now, but you’ll tire of it after a while.”

When updating your flooring, it’s important to look at factors such as the material the flooring is constructed from, its texture, colour, what is laid underneath it, and how the sections of flooring are joined. Choosing the flooring that is right for you and your family is all about durability, your lifestyle and aesthetics.

The post Two simple solutions for waterproofing garden decking projects appeared first on Completehome.

]]>
Creating gardens that feel like a natural extension of your home – versatile, inviting, and easy to look after – is one of the smartest investments you can make in your property. And nothing ties it all together quite like a great deck. Whether it’s for weekend barbecues, entertaining friends, or just relaxing outdoors, a well-designed deck can transform your backyard into a true Aussie living space.

Whether you build with timber or with one of today’s high-performance composite deck boards, such as Trex®, it’s important to properly protect the decking substructure to ensure it stays structurally sound. In most cases, foundational posts and bearers are made of timber and, therefore, highly susceptible to moisture penetration and deterioration over time. In fact, research has shown that timber can show signs of splitting, rotting or decay in as little as eight years.*

Fortunately, there’s a simple and affordable solution for protecting your work and your clients’ garden investments. Using a good deck flashing tape is an easy and cost-effective way to build a quality deck that is guaranteed to last for decades.

There are two primary options for protective flashing tapes – asphalt-based and butyl tapes. Although asphalt-based tape is generally less expensive, it tends to dry out more quickly and can curl up and hold water. It can also take up to 72 hours to fully bond. Since acrylic tapes don’t withstand water as well, they typically come with short-term warranties or no warranty at all. Acrylic tape can also be slippery, whereas butyl tape, such as Trex® Protect™ Joist, Bearer & Rim Tape, is skid-proof and offers better protection from slips and falls during installation. Butyl tape also applies faster because its sealant secures immediately.

Designed specifically for use on decks, Trex Protect works as a waterproof barrier to effectively shield the tops of joists, rim joists, bearers and the ledger board from moisture that can lead to the development of rot and timber decay. Available in three widths – 50 mm x 20 m for joists, 100 mm x 20 m for bearers and 279.4mm x 15.24m for rim joists – it works on horizontal and vertical surfaces and is applied as a ‘cap’ (vs. wrapping) directly on top of joists and bearers, which allows the timber to breathe.

The peel-and-stick application is simple and requires almost no trimming. Furthermore, the butyl adhesive is super sticky, yet pliable, which allows it to create a tight seal around fasteners to prevent water from infiltrating screw holes and defend against splitting that can result from seasonal freezing and thawing. It doesn’t dry out or curl up like other construction tapes and performs extremely well in a wide range of temperatures. Plus, it comes with a 20-year warranty.

“Moisture is any deck’s worst enemy, making it critical to educate homeowners about the importance of protecting their deck’s substructure at the outset of a build—something they may not always think about since the substructure isn’t the focal point of a deck,” said Dave Kile, Sales Manager for Trex Protect. “By recommending and using protective flashing tape on all of your deck builds, you’re not only helping to ensure the quality and long-term safety of your projects, but you’re also protecting your customers’ investments by ensuring they won’t have to worry about premature wood rot, decay, or deck failure.”

Trex

For more comprehensive waterproofing, consider installing Trex RainEscape®, a deck drainage system designed for use on elevated decks. Applied above the joists during a deck build, this system uses a flexible membrane material to create a network of troughs and downspouts that captures and diverts water away from a deck to protect the substructure from moisture and create dry, usable space beneath a deck. The system acts like shingles on a roof to shield the wooden foundation from moisture penetration and damage and can extend the life of a deck and its framing for decades.

Once protected, the area below the deck surface can be used like any room inside a house. Homeowners can add electricity, water and gas lines, as well as furniture, lighting and ceiling fans to create the ultimate outdoor living space – perfect as we head into summer. This area also is ideal for use as bonus storage space for stowing anything from lawn and garden equipment, pool gear, or the kids’ bikes and boards. With a deck drainage system in place, the possibilities are limitless for how the space below a deck can be used.

“Happy customers give referrals that can lead to more business, so it’s important to provide a quality end product and service they will rave about to their friends and family,” noted Kile. “Protecting the substructure with flashing tape or a full deck drainage system exponentially improves the structural integrity and longevity of a deck to ensure customer satisfaction and peace of mind for many years to come.”

A Case Study with Homeowner Jane and Designer Tom Hall

When Jane decided it was time to renovate her Northbridge home, she knew the kitchen and laundry needed to be more than just functional, she wanted spaces that felt elegant, inviting, and tailored to her family’s lifestyle. For that, she turned to Nobby Kitchens and one of their leading designers, Tom Hall.

“From our very first meeting, it was clear that Jane had a strong sense of how she wanted her home to feel; calm, elegant, and functional. My role was to take those ideas and elevate them, finding ways to bring beauty into the practical details. Seeing it all come together and knowing it perfectly suits her lifestyle has been incredibly rewarding.

“My particular favourites in this design are the curved marble waterfall end, which creates such a striking focal point, and the Blum Revego pocket door appliance cabinet system, a clever solution that keeps the space clean, streamlined, and effortlessly functional,” says Tom.

A Showpiece Kitchen with Clever Functionality

At the heart of Jane’s new kitchen is a stunning curved marble benchtop, which immediately draws the eye and sets a refined tone for the space.

“Tom really listened to how we live and use our spaces. He translated all our ideas into something far more beautiful and practical than we could have imagined,” says Jane.

Tom’s design focused on blending elegance with seamless functionality. Behind Revego pocket doors, often described as the ‘disappearing doors’, sits a beautifully concealed appliance cabinet, keeping countertops clear and the kitchen uncluttered.

Adding to the premium feel are Aventos sensor touch overhead cabinets, which glide open at a gentle touch, a perfect blend of luxury and practicality.

“I love how everything is within reach yet hidden away when not in use. The clean lines give the kitchen such a calm, contemporary feel,” says Jane.

The kitchen also features a sleek Billi tap for instant boiling, chilled, and sparkling water, a touch that Jane says has been “life changing for busy mornings and entertaining.”

Integrated Style

To keep the aesthetic uninterrupted, Tom specified integrated appliances throughout the kitchen, including the fridge and dishwasher. The hero of the entertaining area is the stunning wine fridge, seamlessly built into the joinery and lit to showcase Jane’s curated collection of wines.

“The wine fridge is such a feature. It’s not only practical but looks incredible, it’s like a piece of art in the kitchen,” Jane adds.

A Laundry That’s Just as Thoughtful

The transformation extended beyond the kitchen into the laundry. Designed with the same attention to detail, the laundry combines ample storage, a smart hanging rack layouts, hidden laundry basket and clean lines that make everyday tasks easier and more pleasant.

“I never thought I’d love doing laundry, but it’s now such a well designed space that it genuinely feels effortless,” Jane laughs.

A Space That’s Truly Her Own

For Jane, the collaboration with Tom Hall and the Nobby Kitchens team turned what could have been a daunting renovation into an inspiring experience.

“Tom was brilliant, from the first 3 D design he showed us, I could see our vision come to life. The whole process was seamless and the result is a home we’re proud of every single day.”

Experience the Nobby Difference

Jane’s Northbridge kitchen and laundry are a testament to how thoughtful design and premium craftsmanship can transform the heart of a home.

A collaborative masterpiece with sweeping views

Located in picturesque Murrindindi, two hours north-east of Melbourne, Victoria, this showpiece home is positioned within a scenic valley and sits subtly upon the ridgeline, optimising views of the tranquil landscape.

With a desire to create both a rural sanctuary and a space to share with friends and family, the clients engaged Hedger Constructions and bespoke interior designer Studio McGilp to bring their vision to life. The home has a unique spatial organisation, with two wings for guest and owner retreats, connected via expansive, light-filled shared central spaces.

Unobtrusive to the skyline with the 12-degree roof pitch and a cohesive colour palette inspired by the gentle hues of the landscape, the home demonstrates a contemporary rural residence in complete harmony with its natural surroundings.

Externally, the use of natural materials in contrasting tones and textures was given careful consideration. The generously proportioned front entry door has been custom designed and built from Tasmanian oak, with weighted sections of solid copper inlay and a custom handmade hammered bronze handle.

Fine Adze Granite provides elegant simplicity and is complemented by handmade charcoal-coloured Flensborg brickwork imported from Denmark. The use of yellow stringybark feature cladding to key areas provides a contrasting change to the tones.

Timber blades on the guest wing not only complement the style, but also have the functional aspects of privacy and allowing services such as downpipes to be concealed, giving clean lines to the build. An Alucabond fascia runs around the roofline, linking with the express-jointed panel eave lining for a cohesive external finish.

Internally, the artisan craftsmanship of Hedger Constructions is on full display. The central zone of the home features a raked ceiling of Tasmanian oak, providing natural strength, which is counterbalanced by light-honed Italian natural stone flooring. When the north sun illuminates the living room floor, the gentle, translucent veins reflect movement and provide ethereal serenity.

The focus of the space is the centrally placed triple-sided wood fire, custom designed and detailed using individually shaped New Pearl limestone pieces. It is anchored by an extended hearth of large-format sintered stone in rich bronze to convey a solid, grounded ethic marking the “heart” of the home. On the hearth, a generous seat cushion in a limited-release jewel-tone cut moquette velvet encourages fireside seating.

The stunning feature chimney emphasises the high timber ceiling and openness of this area. Contemporary American accent lighting is used throughout and was customised by the interior and build teams to suit suspension from the raked ceilings.

With a 73-year history in high-end, custom residential interior design and decoration, Studio McGilp approached the interiors throughout this showpiece home with respect to the contemporary, linear nature of the architecture, while providing contrast through the introduction of gentle, organic forms. Softening of the built environment was achieved through the integration of a cohesive colour palette, evoking relaxed luxury, serenity and comfort.

A carefully curated selection of paintings, sculptures and objet d’art includes locally made hand-blown glass sculptural forms, a commissioned suspended wire sculpture, and an extensive selection of individually commissioned artworks. The furnishing response incorporates unique, limited-release European fabrics and custom woven textiles to enhance the interior via the use of contemporary patterns and modern, botanical forms.

A bespoke kitchen is flooded with natural light via an impressive glazing package including electric-opening clerestory windows for natural cross ventilation. The cabinetry package utilises low chroma colours to create a serene, comfortable space for cooking and entertaining. Hand-formed light-reflective tiles create an elegant splashback. The environmentally conscious silica-free Corian benchtop features a waterfall edge on one side and is balanced by a cantilevered plane on the opposing side, while the butler’s pantry is discreetly positioned to allow the working elements of the kitchen to be concealed.

At either end of the open-plan central zone there are guest and private wings. Here, the high ceilings and expansive shared spaces are juxtaposed with an intimate approach using tactile finishes and materials. The bedrooms are inviting, restful sanctuaries and include bespoke upholstered bedheads and soft lighting, the beds finished with fine textiles of pure cashmere, cut velvet, wool and linen.

In the master bathroom, the free-standing bath is positioned to optimise valley views, with hand-woven artisanal Japanese automated blinds providing privacy. A large walk-in shower and an expansive dressing room complete the retreat-like feel.

Hedger Constructions + Studio McGilp

The north-facing aspect of the living and master bedroom zones allows for panoramic views as well as providing important thermal qualities to the home. The in-floor hydronic heating is rarely used as the eave lines and glazing package allow for the tiled floor to act as a heat bank in winter, and they provide appropriate shading in summer.

The main guest bedroom includes a private ensuite with floor-to-ceiling tiling and walk-in robe area. Additional bedrooms are serviced by a family bathroom and powder room in which custom-made light fittings of locally hand-blown glass and solid brass create a gentle atmosphere.

Bespoke in all aspects, this home required a collaborative approach for which Hedger Constructions is renowned. Working hand-in-hand with Studio McGilp, all parties contributed their expertise to provide comprehensive, individually tailored services from concept to completion.

With projects Australia-wide, Studio McGilp brought an informed understanding of interior architecture, interior detailing and building methods to achieve this special and timeless interior.

A reputation underpinned by more than 30 Master Builders Association Awards, including multiple Regional Builder of the Year wins, makes Hedger Constructions the trusted name to deliver custom homes of this size and calibre. Every Hedger Constructions dwelling is masterfully crafted with a considered, innovative approach, and this new Murrindindi residence is no exception.

Perched above the calm waters of Hardys Bay, an hour from Sydney, a modest shed boasted arguably one of the best waterside views a rundown shed has ever had. But no more. In its place sits a beautiful and sophisticated coastal retreat holiday home.

Ali Whelan, design lead and associate at Breathe Architecture, says the shed was an understated backdrop just waiting for architectural intervention. “The clients envisioned a refined coastal retreat — a holiday home that would support their transition from a family residence in Sydney without compromising on the space needed to come together as a family or with friends,” says Ali.

Ironbark House

“It was to be a backdrop for shared memories, sun-soaked days on the water, evenings spent = around the table, and a slower rhythm of life attuned to place and connection.”

It was a deeply personal project for Ali, as the residence was commissioned by her parents. “They entrusted me with the privilege of designing their new home in close collaboration with them,” she reveals.

The home has four bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms, open-plan living spaces and generous indoor-outdoor areas. The outdoor deck is one of Ali’s favourite aspects of the design.

By day, the soft light moves gracefully across the bay in a slow unhurried rhythm, creating dappled patterns through the timber screening. Ali says in the evening, the light takes on a warm, golden hue. “It beautifully illuminates the treetops of the national park, creating a moment of quiet, natural beauty that feels timeless,” she says.

Ironbark House

The homeowners are avid entertainers, so the residence would be a social hub, a place for family and friends. “This project was conceived as both a family sanctuary and a vibrant retreat for retirement, an elegant yet relaxed coastal home designed to bring people together,” shares Ali.
The site’s steep geography led to an issue with stormwater runoff. This was aptly addressed through landscaping and layered native planting by Pangkarra Gardens.

The sandstone base connects the home organically to its locality; the top storey is clad in timber. “Timber screens wrap the corners, blurring edges and filtering light and views,” notes Ali. “Inside, a palette of light bright materials provides a calm contrast, creating a backdrop that allows the landscape to take centre stage.”

Ironbark House

The project was a successful collaboration between Breathe, BBM Construction, Pangkarra Gardens and the clients. It’s a project that holistically embraces sustainable building practices and outcomes. Ali says environmental considerations were paramount throughout the process.

“At Breathe, sustainability is woven into the very fabric of our design philosophy from the outset, guided by a first principles approach,” she explains.

Passive design principles guided the project every step of the way. Shaded glazing works with openings and light to curate spaces that are cool and welcoming. “The design strategically captures prevailing breezes,” says Ali, “encouraging natural cross-ventilation and reducing the need for air-conditioning.” Native species and low-water-usage plants reduce water requirements onsite.

Ironbark House

Recycled and reclaimed materials where possible featured in the project. The owners sourced furniture from local designers and makers, and locally sourced salvaged timber was incorporated into the rear decking. On the front deck, reclaimed timber was put to good use and crafted into a unique table. “The timber was reclaimed by BBM from a local wharf that was being decommissioned during construction, imbuing the home with a tangible sense of place and narrative,” adds Ali.
