The ACFA National Industry Awards

The ACFA National Industry Awards were held in February to recognise Australia’s outstanding contributors to the cabinet and furniture industry over the past two years.

Here, we showcase the best kitchen and bathroom projects that formed a big part of the awards categories.

THE BIG FIVE

CATEGORY Best Kitchen Design

WINNER Paiano Design with Jenna Karrer Design (NSW)

THE VISION This charismatic kitchen, nestled in the leafy suburb of Alfords Point, NSW, boasts creativity and flair. With an open-plan and eastern aspect, this space basks in dappled light that comes through the soaring gumtrees around it. The designers were inspired by this in their selections of colours and finishes. A fusion of retro and contemporary aesthetics, the focal point is a one-of-a-kind curved perforated metal island. A subtle eucalyptus (Grass Sands — Dulux) polyurethane backdrop, paired with steel-framed reeded glass, encourages light to dance around the undulating surfaces.

WHAT THE JUDGES SAID The judges were wowed and loved the layout and material, colour palette and on-trend functionality.

CATEGORY Best Laundry Design

WINNER Northern Kitchens and Joinery with Hugh Jones Mackintosh (NSW)

THE VISION This laundry brought together high functionality with contemporary design using two-tone painted American oak veneer, black granite benchtops and splashback upturn. It added a dash of the traditional to the room, with V grooves to the doors and a deep butler’s sink. The soft colours made it a warm and welcoming addition to an already renovated home.

WHAT THE JUDGES SAID Great use of storage and integrated bench space. Great use of a variety of materials, providing a dual-function space with a glamorous look.

CATEGORY Cabinetmaker of the Year

WINNER Winchester Interiors with Steve Cordony (NSW)

THE VISION Amazing is an understatement for this classic kitchen that Winchester Interiors built for well-known stylist and Belle magazine editor Steve Cordony. The property is located in Orange, NSW, on the famous site of Rosedale Farm. Steve approached Winchester Interiors with a base plan and a unique vision with the need to refine the detailing through prototyping and planning, and Winchester assisted in the final moulding of the detail. The unique concept combines a main kitchen which connects through to a butler’s pantry, laundry and mudroom. The result is a classic old-style English kitchen with timeless details.

WHAT THE JUDGES SAID Joinery in this entry is amazing. The attention to detail and level of joinery skills set this apart.

CATEGORY Best Bathroom Design

WINNER Archertec Interiors with Impact Joinery & REP Building (ACT)

THE VISION Part of the brief was to review and further develop the interiors of what was already an architecturally dynamic home. Freedom was given to play with the space and make changes to create a new master suite, but it was important to match the style and design language of the building. The client wanted the master suite to be comfortable and spacious, with facilities to cater for the couple when they were using the bathroom together. They also wanted the finishes to be modern and simple, but still warm and elegant, with surfaces that would be easy to maintain and durable to last the test of time.

WHAT THE JUDGES SAID Elegant. Light and bright. Space well laid out and proportioned. A feel of tranquillity.

CATEGORY Best Alfresco Design

WINNER Carrera By Design (NSW)

THE VISION The designer used louvre-style doors to give this space a light and airy feel, but also tried to stay within the scheme of this home while creating a spot that has all elements outdoors, including sink, cooktop, fridge, Caesarstone benchtop and, of course, a charcoal barbecue for the ultimate in outdoor entertaining.

WHAT THE JUDGES SAID Lovely, resort style, clever use of ventilation, very inviting space. Feeling of instant relaxation.
