A collaborative masterpiece with sweeping views

Located in picturesque Murrindindi, two hours north-east of Melbourne, Victoria, this showpiece home is positioned within a scenic valley and sits subtly upon the ridgeline, optimising views of the tranquil landscape.

With a desire to create both a rural sanctuary and a space to share with friends and family, the clients engaged Hedger Constructions and bespoke interior designer Studio McGilp to bring their vision to life. The home has a unique spatial organisation, with two wings for guest and owner retreats, connected via expansive, light-filled shared central spaces.

Hedger Constructions + Studio McGilp

Unobtrusive to the skyline with the 12-degree roof pitch and a cohesive colour palette inspired by the gentle hues of the landscape, the home demonstrates a contemporary rural residence in complete harmony with its natural surroundings.

Externally, the use of natural materials in contrasting tones and textures was given careful consideration. The generously proportioned front entry door has been custom designed and built from Tasmanian oak, with weighted sections of solid copper inlay and a custom handmade hammered bronze handle.

Hedger Constructions + Studio McGilp

Fine Adze Granite provides elegant simplicity and is complemented by handmade charcoal-coloured Flensborg brickwork imported from Denmark. The use of yellow stringybark feature cladding to key areas provides a contrasting change to the tones.

Timber blades on the guest wing not only complement the style, but also have the functional aspects of privacy and allowing services such as downpipes to be concealed, giving clean lines to the build. An Alucabond fascia runs around the roofline, linking with the express-jointed panel eave lining for a cohesive external finish.

Internally, the artisan craftsmanship of Hedger Constructions is on full display. The central zone of the home features a raked ceiling of Tasmanian oak, providing natural strength, which is counterbalanced by light-honed Italian natural stone flooring. When the north sun illuminates the living room floor, the gentle, translucent veins reflect movement and provide ethereal serenity.

Hedger Constructions + Studio McGilp

The focus of the space is the centrally placed triple-sided wood fire, custom designed and detailed using individually shaped New Pearl limestone pieces. It is anchored by an extended hearth of large-format sintered stone in rich bronze to convey a solid, grounded ethic marking the “heart” of the home. On the hearth, a generous seat cushion in a limited-release jewel-tone cut moquette velvet encourages fireside seating.

The stunning feature chimney emphasises the high timber ceiling and openness of this area. Contemporary American accent lighting is used throughout and was customised by the interior and build teams to suit suspension from the raked ceilings.

With a 73-year history in high-end, custom residential interior design and decoration, Studio McGilp approached the interiors throughout this showpiece home with respect to the contemporary, linear nature of the architecture, while providing contrast through the introduction of gentle, organic forms. Softening of the built environment was achieved through the integration of a cohesive colour palette, evoking relaxed luxury, serenity and comfort.

A carefully curated selection of paintings, sculptures and objet d’art includes locally made hand-blown glass sculptural forms, a commissioned suspended wire sculpture, and an extensive selection of individually commissioned artworks. The furnishing response incorporates unique, limited-release European fabrics and custom woven textiles to enhance the interior via the use of contemporary patterns and modern, botanical forms.

A bespoke kitchen is flooded with natural light via an impressive glazing package including electric-opening clerestory windows for natural cross ventilation. The cabinetry package utilises low chroma colours to create a serene, comfortable space for cooking and entertaining. Hand-formed light-reflective tiles create an elegant splashback. The environmentally conscious silica-free Corian benchtop features a waterfall edge on one side and is balanced by a cantilevered plane on the opposing side, while the butler’s pantry is discreetly positioned to allow the working elements of the kitchen to be concealed.

At either end of the open-plan central zone there are guest and private wings. Here, the high ceilings and expansive shared spaces are juxtaposed with an intimate approach using tactile finishes and materials. The bedrooms are inviting, restful sanctuaries and include bespoke upholstered bedheads and soft lighting, the beds finished with fine textiles of pure cashmere, cut velvet, wool and linen.

In the master bathroom, the free-standing bath is positioned to optimise valley views, with hand-woven artisanal Japanese automated blinds providing privacy. A large walk-in shower and an expansive dressing room complete the retreat-like feel.

Hedger Constructions + Studio McGilp

The north-facing aspect of the living and master bedroom zones allows for panoramic views as well as providing important thermal qualities to the home. The in-floor hydronic heating is rarely used as the eave lines and glazing package allow for the tiled floor to act as a heat bank in winter, and they provide appropriate shading in summer.

The main guest bedroom includes a private ensuite with floor-to-ceiling tiling and walk-in robe area. Additional bedrooms are serviced by a family bathroom and powder room in which custom-made light fittings of locally hand-blown glass and solid brass create a gentle atmosphere.

Bespoke in all aspects, this home required a collaborative approach for which Hedger Constructions is renowned. Working hand-in-hand with Studio McGilp, all parties contributed their expertise to provide comprehensive, individually tailored services from concept to completion.

With projects Australia-wide, Studio McGilp brought an informed understanding of interior architecture, interior detailing and building methods to achieve this special and timeless interior.

A reputation underpinned by more than 30 Master Builders Association Awards, including multiple Regional Builder of the Year wins, makes Hedger Constructions the trusted name to deliver custom homes of this size and calibre. Every Hedger Constructions dwelling is masterfully crafted with a considered, innovative approach, and this new Murrindindi residence is no exception.

Rylock’s custom windows and doors play a pivotal role in shaping this striking modern farmhouse by Jake Barrow Architecture.

Positioned on the natural slope of a bushland block, this farmhouse exemplifies the seamless fusion of architectural vision and practical design. A thoughtfully planned layout creates a central courtyard that enhances the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, while also achieving impressive energy efficiency.

Grade A Safety Toughened Low-e Double Glazing (Argon Fill)

Balancing Bushfire Safety with Architectural Elegance

Due to the home’s location within a bushfire-prone zone, all windows and doors were required to comply with the Bushfire Attack Level (BAL-29) rating requirements. On the southern elevation, BAL-29–compliant materials were used to ensure safety and performance without compromising the home’s refined aesthetic.

“The strategic use of glazing was critical to the success of the external courtyard concept,” explains Jake Barrow of Jake Barrow Architecture. “Key views are framed and openings carefully positioned to maximise the indoor/outdoor experience without compromising on the energy performance. The result is a home that is filled with natural light in all of the key spaces at the most appropriate times of day.”

Two standout features of the home are the twin gables in the master bedroom and rumpus room. Each gable is designed with a striking 6-metre-wide, four-panel Fixed Lite Window, complemented by raked windows to elevate the architectural presence.

Grade A Safety Toughened Low-e Double Glazing (Argon Fill)

Custom Windows and Doors Tailored to Style and Function

Upon entry, visitors are welcomed by a carefully framed view through a substantial 4m² Fixed Lite Window, perfectly capturing the outdoor entertaining area and beyond.

At the heart of the home is a striking 6.5-metre-wide, six-panel Stacker Door with a centre-opening configuration, seamlessly connecting the interior to the infinity-edge pool and outdoor living space.

Grade A Safety Toughened Low-e Double Glazing (Argon Fill)

In multiple areas of the home, Awning Windows with horizontal and vertical muntin bars add architectural interest and subtly reference traditional design. Prominently featured in the guest bedroom, all secondary bedrooms, and the master ensuite, these windows offer excellent ventilation while maintaining the home’s clean, modern lines.

Double-hung windows are strategically placed in walkways and transitional spaces to promote natural airflow. The operable bottom sash draws in cool air, while the top sash releases warm air, creating natural ventilation without encroaching into living spaces.

Architectural refinement continues with custom offset Awning Windows in the main bathroom and butler’s pantry—functional elements elevated to distinct design features.

Grade A Safety Toughened Low-e Double Glazing (Argon Fill)

The Perfect Balance of Quality and Value for the Project

The selection of windows and doors was guided by more than just aesthetics.

“Rylock windows and doors presented the best value proposition for the project when considering quality and price point,” notes Jake Barrow. “The client’s experience of the sales process was also an important factor. Ricardo did an excellent job in helping the owners gain confidence in their selections and strike the perfect balance between their differing traditional vs contemporary style tastes.”

This collaborative process ensured the final solution not only aligned with the architectural vision but also reflected the clients’ personal style. The result is a contemporary farmhouse that feels grounded in its bushland setting—open, inviting, and thoughtfully crafted, where every custom window and door contributes to both beauty and function in a truly remarkable forever family home.

Sitting on the cosy deck of this eco-friendly home, there is hardly a breath of wind. It’s quiet and calm. There are views to the national park beyond and agricultural buildings in the distance. Looking out at the leafy landscape, you can almost imagine the heady excitement of those seeking their fortune in the 1850s. The town of Chewton was one of the earliest towns established during the Gold Rush era. Some buildings in the district still remain from the Gold Rush heyday and there are also deep indigenous roots in the region.

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom dwelling is home to young professionals James and Zara
and their greyhound Nel. “It was inspired by the local vernacular architecture, particularly the humble agricultural buildings that define the central Victorian landscape,” says designer David Noordhoff.

Pyrenees, Vic

The couple relocated from suburban Melbourne. “They sought a place to lay down roots and establish themselves in a more tranquil environment,” shares David. The home has open-plan living and a dedicated workspace for James. The design and layout connect living spaces to the leafy natural landscape.

During planning and design, David says there was one main objective: “Ultimately, the goal was to establish a welcoming environment that encourages relaxation and fosters connections with both nature and family life.” According to David, it was also important to the homeowners that their house integrate harmoniously with its surrounding narrative. “They favoured local materials and architectural styles that honoured the area’s agricultural heritage,” he explains.

Pyrenees, Vic

Materials such as spotted gum cladding and Colorbond steel in Woodland Grey were used to integrate the home into its local environment, as well as complying with the bushfire attack level rating (BAL 29).

The project did come with its share of challenges, including historical protection regulations that weighed in on the design process, and with COVID-19, there were also material shortages
during construction.

David notes the couple also sought a design that would provide comfortable living conditions year-round, minimising energy costs. “Additionally, addressing noise from the road adjacent to the property was crucial to creating a tranquil living environment,” he adds.

By today’s standards, this house was constructed with a modest budget. Thanks to thoughtful measured design as well as materiality, it delivers on functionality, form and aesthetics. Inspired by nature’s palette of warm earthy tones, it’s understated with a subtle charm. This is a family dwelling with design flexibility to allow it to evolve over time, as needs change.

Pyrenees, Vic

David’s favourite part of the space is the window seat next to the fireplace, a cosy nook that invites you to curl up on a chilly winter day with a coffee. The expansive windows connect you to the exterior landscape. “This intimate corner embodies the spirit of the home, offering a warm and inviting retreat where you can relax and appreciate nature throughout the seasons,” he says.

As the long hot days of summer flow into the cooler autumn and winter months, temperatures begin to fall, sometimes dramatically. It is an area of temperature extremes, with chilly winters and scorching summers. The home is responsive to its environment. The pitched roof lines capture the warming winter sun’s rays and offer cool respite from the hot summer sun.

Pyrenees, Vic

David explains these construction techniques enhance insulation, reducing the need for artificial heating and cooling. “This approach not only improves energy efficiency, but also ensures a comfortable living environment despite the extreme climate,” he notes.

The project was a meeting of minds between homeowners, builder and architect. “I collaborated extensively with James and Zara to ensure their vision and needs remained at the forefront of the design,” says David. “VR Builders provided valuable advice and guidance, helping to keep the project on budget while ensuring it was practical and straightforward to construct.”

Pyrenees, Vic

Unlike most projects, the architect actually had an opportunity to test drive the house. His family lived in the completed home for three months, housesitting for the owners while they went overseas. “Living in the space allowed me to ‘road test’ the design in real life, providing valuable insights and enjoyable experiences,” David says. “This experience not only deepened my connection to the project, but also created lasting memories for my family as we cherished our time in this special place.”

It was an epic tale in the making. After a two-year search, the homeowners found the perfect vacant land. It stretches across 11.7 hectares, has a north-facing slope with views of a lake, and pristine views of rolling hills.

“The property embodies the classic Adelaide Hills vibe, with open green fields surrounded by eucalypt trees,” notes Greg Bond, architect and director of Atelier Bond.

On the day the architects viewed the site, the heavens opened, and rain and hail bucketed down. Undeterred, they jumped in the car and viewed the site that way. “After that we went to the Uraidla pub — very Adelaide Hills behaviour,” laughs Greg.

Big House On The Hill, SA

The owners, a couple transitioning to retirement, wanted to create a luxury retreat away from the city that was spacious enough for their entire family to gather together. The sprawling home, which is made up of three pavilions, has a 1200sqm footprint over two levels; 400sqm is underground.

It’s a home built with sustainability in mind. “The rammed earth spine is the structural hero piece of this house, with a continual presence throughout,” notes Greg. It offers a host of benefits including thermal mass, robustness, durability, and it has fireproofing attributes.

Greg says an engineering feat of cantilevering 4m at each end of the spine proudly completes the form. “Atelier Bond’s other design feat for this space is the angled ceiling detail,” he explains. “It seeks to capture the best of the view and the light by angling the roof line to the east through a specialised timber system.”

The home’s orientation to the north, high-level windows, in-slab heating in habitable zones, as well as rammed earth and timber cladding, all tick the box for astute sustainability.

The home is spectacular. In the basement level there’s a wine room with climate-controlled cellar, whiskey lounge, pub bar, home cinema and more. On the ground floor there’s an abundance of living spaces, bathrooms and bedrooms, including a butler’s pantry, mud room, family powder room, guest powder room, home office, entertaining terrace, and a wine bar with stairs to the wine room below. There are also two guest bedrooms with individual ensuites, and two guest bedrooms sharing an ensuite.

Big House On The Hill, SA

The master wing is at the eastern end of the dwelling and it’s one of Greg’s favourite aspects of the build. “It’s a shrine to the morning sun; we hope the clients enjoy waking up with sunshine on their faces, particularly on the glorious Adelaide Hills winter mornings.” There is also a sewing room, private library, bathrooms, and a walk-in dressing room.

The ceiling design is unique. “The mix of brick and baton-angled ceilings ties your eyes to the interior, and as you glance at the outside view, your gaze fixes on the dam below,” he shares. Indeed, the spectacular views can be enjoyed from every room of the home.

The residence is very generously proportioned, stretching across 65m. One of the challenges of the project, according to Greg, was to create a house very large in scale without it feeling cavernous. “Through careful functional resolutions and material selections, it’s a large and beautiful home that nestles into the site more quietly than you would think,” he notes.

Big House On The Hill, SA

During the process, the parameters continually changed while the design intent remained firm. “It kept getting bigger and bigger as we went,” says Greg. “All the teams needed to work together to collaborate and communicate throughout the construction phase as the brief was often a moving beast.”

The design and execution of this project was an inspiring collaboration between Atelier Bond, Leed Engineering, the infrastructure engineer and substructure contractor. The builder was Jordan Gyss from The Little Build Co. “Everyone on the project joked that this house didn’t come close to being a little building, and that Jordan needed to change the name of his company,” laughs Greg.

This meticulously designed Hamptons haven in Killara was thoughtfully designed to enhance the original owner’s evolving lifestyle and changing needs. Blending timeless charm, a clever design and improved functionality, it’s a home built on vision, purpose and a partnership to last a lifetime.

In the leafy North Shore suburb of Killara, a tired, ageing residence has been replaced by a showstopping new build. This timeless Hamptons home blends modern functionality with traditional architectural elegance.

Crafted for a professional couple and their teenage sons, the home was designed to reflect their evolving lifestyle needs, offering space, privacy, flexibility, and beauty in equal measure.

A Challenging Site, a Creative Solution

The site itself presented several challenges. Fan-shaped and nearly triangular, it stretches from a narrow 4-metre frontage to a generous 43 metres at the rear. It also featured significant cross-fall, a central sewer main, and several mature trees that needed to be retained.

Rather than see this as a limitation, the design team embraced it. The solution? Strategically positioning the house far from the street to maximise the buildable footprint and preserve the natural features. The result is a grand yet understated façade with instant street appeal, nestled comfortably within its environment and true to the suburb’s traditional character.

Multi-Level Living, Single-Storey Feel

While the home spans three levels, its clever design makes it appear largely single storey from the street. The lower ground floor is tucked discreetly out of sight, housing a three-car garage, two storage rooms, and a motorised turntable to simplify vehicle access on the tight front boundary.

The first floor is integrated into the steeply pitched gabled roof, utilising dormer windows to bring in light and ventilation. This helps retain Hampton’s aesthetic while increasing functionality in the upper-level bedrooms and bathrooms.

The Killara Hamptons Home

Welcome Home: A Grand Yet Inviting Entrance

A decorative porch, flanked by twin verandas, provides a classic entry point into the home. To the right of the central hallway sits a formal study—ideal for the work-from-home lifestyle. On the left, a versatile music and guest room doubles as a peaceful retreat.

But it’s the rear of the home that truly shines.

The Killara Hamptons Home The Killara Hamptons Home  The Killara Hamptons Home

Open-Plan Living Designed for Real Life

The informal living zones are all positioned at the north-facing rear of the home to maximise natural light and connection to the outdoors. A beautifully appointed kitchen, dining, and family living area wraps around a generous alfresco terrace, which enjoys uninterrupted views of the lush backyard and elevated swimming pool.

The Killara Hamptons Home

Feature garden walls provide a living backdrop to the interiors, showcasing the owners’ passion for greenery and giving the home a serene, resort-like feel.

The Killara Hamptons Home

Private Retreats for Growing Teens

Upstairs is all about privacy. With the teenage boys, each enjoys their own suite, complete with an ensuite, generous robe space, and study nooks. But the standout design feature? Hidden attic storage spaces tucked behind swinging bookcases—a whimsical, practical touch that reflects thoughtful planning and a sense of fun.

A shared front-facing deck gives them a private outlook across the landscaped front garden—a peaceful spot for reading, relaxing, or entertaining friends.

The parents’ master suite is equally impressive, offering a spacious bedroom adorned with a private balcony, walk-in wardrobe and a luxurious ensuite, all bathed in natural light.
Outdoor Living, Elevated

To create a level rear yard, the architects cleverly utilised the elevated pool structure as a retaining wall, allowing the family to enjoy an ample and functional lawn space. The pool and alfresco are seamlessly connected, encouraging effortless outdoor entertaining and day-to-day use.

Built to Last

This is a home that looks beautiful—but more importantly, it’s built with integrity. Premium finishes and expert craftsmanship showcase the collaboration of the client, interior designer, and builder to ensure durability and reduced long-term maintenance. It’s an investment not just in the structure but in lifestyle and future resale value.

The Final Word: A Family’s Delight

Ultimately, the success of a new home isn’t just about architecture or aesthetics—it’s about how it feels to live in. Shortly after the family moved in, the architect called to check in. The reply was instant and heartfelt:

“It’s just perfect, everything and more than we hoped. We’re cracking open a bottle of red wine on the alfresco, overlooking our new pool and backyard—we just love our new home!” Enough said!”

It’s moments like these that prove great design and construction partnerships go beyond drawings and bits of wood, Bricks and mortar, and create joy, comfort, and lasting memories for the occupant.

Blending luxury, sustainability and practicality — and delivered with exceptional craftsmanship courtesy of Hedger Constructions — this iconic home redefines modern family living on Victoria’s picturesque coast.

Idyllically located on Victoria’s Surf Coast, this impressive new family home and office marries contemporary design with environmental sustainability, creating a harmonious and stylish retreat for work, play, and family life. The original 3-acre block featured a perimeter of established trees but was otherwise a blank canvas. Auhaus Architecture worked with the clients to develop a sculptural home design with sweeping curves, impressive scale and a palette of natural materials to create a statement home with a uniquely Australian aesthetic.

Hedger Constructions

Renowned for delivering custom homes of this size and calibre, Hedger Constructions were engaged in the design and development phase and worked collaboratively with the architects and clients to bring the ambitious home vision to life.

The property has a truly unique design and spatial organisation, with no formal front or back. From every side of the home a different aspect of the property can be experienced, with multiple entry and exit points encouraging access to private or shared spaces, whilst immersing occupants in outdoor entertaining and the lush landscaping surrounding the build. Created as two distinct pavilions connected via a glass walkway, the main wing houses the central living, kitchen, dining areas, home office, cinema complex and master suite, while the other is dedicated to the children’s and guest quarters, complete with separate entertaining areas, garage and laundry.

Hedger Constructions

Externally and internally, artisan Elephant Bricks contribute mid-century style and strength, and have been expertly laid to incorporate incredible wall curves, rising to the steeply pitched skillion roof. High ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows curve elegantly around the building’s exterior, mirroring its architectural contours and inviting an abundance of natural light. External eaves are meticulously lined in natural timber to complement the decking and emphasise the sculptural curves of the main wing.

Hedger Constructions

Within the main pavilion, raked ceilings accentuate height and are finished with floating plaster and concealed lighting on all sides, creating a soft and relaxing ambience, whilst subtly highlighting the texture and earthy tones of the brickwork.

The home’s double brick walls provide not only a stunning visual element, but also serve as a thermal mass, retaining heat during winter. Polished concrete floors with a salt-and-pepper finish flow throughout the open plan area, providing additional thermal mass by capturing the sun’s warmth in the day and slowly releasing it in the evenings to naturally warm this cool climate home. Hydronic heating, air conditioning, and a solar-battery hybrid system provide energy-efficiency, while heat pumps, water tanks and a greywater treatment system ensure sustainability.

Hedger Constructions

At the heart of the home, the kitchen, dining, and lounge area impress with their open-plan design. A cleverly concealed scullery backing onto the main kitchen ensures the area remains clutter-free, while the thick natural stone topped island bench doubles as a breakfast bar. High-end appliances, including a custom-built range hood and induction cooktop, blend seamlessly
into the space, maintaining a streamlined aesthetic. Custom timber veneer cabinetry features throughout the kitchen and lounge areas creating a balanced, integrated and functional design. Within the lounge a triple-sided Cheminees Philippe wood heater with feature flue sits upon on a custom concrete hearth, gently warming the home.

Hedger Constructions

Hedger Constructions

The central area opens onto an outdoor entertaining space, where a custom-built pizza oven and BBQ are nestled within concrete benchtops. Timber decking and ceilings along with a wood heater and fans enhance the alfresco zone, creating a private and weather-protected retreat for relaxation and dining.

Hedger Constructions

The adjacent entertainment room is a cinema lover’s dream, featuring state-of-the-art acoustic insulation and audiovisual equipment for an immersive experience. A billiards table and extensive bar, complete with stone splashbacks and subway tile bases, elevate this space into an entertainer’s paradise.

Hedger Constructions

The master suite offers a serene escape, with walk-in robes, expansive garden views and direct access to a private courtyard. The spacious ensuite features double stone topped vanities, brass tapware, and subway tile accents. A free-standing bath, positioned against floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the private courtyard, is both luxurious and discreet.

All bathrooms throughout the home exude elegance, with floor-to-ceiling tiles extending into skylight cavities for a sense of light and luxury. Recessed downlights and feature lighting deliver understated style to every corner.

Hedger Constructions

The home office, perched on the second story, offers a commanding view of the expansive grounds and includes a private balcony. Designed for productivity and inspiration, this space embodies the perfect balance of work and leisure.

In the second wing, each child’s bedroom is a personalised haven, decorated with their own chosen artworks adorning walls and ceilings. Custom-built robes and desks provide practical yet stylish individual spaces, while their shared entertainment room is the ultimate hub for games, music, and movies. Guest quarters are also included within this wing, accompanied by private ensuites to ensure tranquil retreats.

The home’s luxury automation system connects lighting, audio, and communication to centralised digital management, offering seamless control at the touch of a button. A dedicated server room ensures smooth operation, bringing modern convenience to every aspect of daily life.

Thoughtfully crafted to accommodate the diverse needs of its residents, this sculptural winged residence is an architectural triumph, offering a balance of privacy, connectivity, and functionality. Blending luxury, sustainability, and practicality, and delivered with exceptional craftsmanship, this iconic home redefines modern family living on Victoria’s picturesque coast.

Evoking the spirit of Palm Springs, this bespoke home offers the picture-perfect setting for luxurious resort living.

The Mesa, with its impressive street presence, flowing lines, neutral tones, and rich textures, is named after a prestigious neighbourhood in that most renowned of Californian resort towns — Palm Springs. A combination of Spanish revival architecture and innovative modern design elements, The Mesa conjures a captivating ambiance and is what Nick and Carly O’Shea, owners of OSB Property, call a “destination of imagination”.

This luxury “life ready” new home is from the Boutique Lifestyle Collection and was constructed by OSB’s multiple-award-winning building company, O’Shea & Sons Builders. Set on a spacious 615sqm block in the inner-Brisbane suburb of Tarragindi, The Mesa is a 450sqm, five-bedroom family home with a wonderfully warm, natural feel and a raft of lifestyle-enhancing features.

O'Shea & Sons

A key focus was biophilic design. This is an approach to architecture that seeks to connect building occupants more closely to nature and, in the process, create a greater sense of wellbeing. Towards this aim, the design, a collaborative enterprise between OSB Property, O’Shea & Sons Builders, Jazz Designs and Merge Interior Design, overflows with mood-enriching biophilic elements.

Just one example is the abundance of natural light and exceptional ventilation. This included placing skylights directly above showers and living spaces. Another is the strategic placement of indoor plants. This greenery elevates the spirits and links the interior to the gardens.

Biophilic design prioritises organic forms found in nature, so with this in mind the home features the repeated use of curves and arches. The colours, textures and patterns of nature also find expression in many ways, from the veining in the stone benchtops to the rawness of the timber flooring, feature ceilings, and cabinetry.

O'Shea & Sons

O'Shea & Sons

The extensive use of natural stone, inside and out, is also central to the biophilic philosophy. On the exterior, and in select interior spaces, Stone & Tile Studio’s Thredbo random stone cladding adds texture, depth, and warmth. The organic look of the cladding pairs beautifully with the modern architecture, making it the ideal choice for The Mesa.

This is an abode that impresses from the very moment you step through the front door. A massive entry ushers you into a spacious, boldly-designed living space with a sensational open floorplan. In turn, this leads to the rear outdoor entertaining zone boasting a heated swimming pool, cabana, and fireplace for those cosy winter evenings. Also located on ground level is a triple-car garage with the flexibility to accommodate a boat or jet skis. Or, alternatively, you could set up a gym or workshop.

The upper-level living area was designed as a place to relax and stimulate the senses. This is the perfect space to sit and reflect, or take advantage of the inbuilt speakers and enjoy some soothing music while watching the sun set or the city lights twinkle.

To ensure a truly unique look, Maree OShea, Creative Director of O’Shea & Sons Builders, collaborated with Robyn Kirk, a Brisbane artist, interior stylist and former gallery director, to create art pieces for the home. Their combined creativity enhanced the design’s aesthetic, fashioning harmonious yet distinctive spaces.

“When we think about it, we create our homes as an environment of beauty and order. My art captures a sense of magic within the realm of contentment — unpredictable and lacking control. The pieces aim to reflect emotion through dancing themes, vibrant colours, and the harmony of music,” says Robyn.

The Mesa, however, is not just a testament to the spectacular results that can be achieved when skilled design professionals pool their talents. It’s a breathtaking example of the Life Ready Homes O’Shea & Sons Builders can design, build, and style — all to the highest standards.

“As part of the process, a Comprehensive Interior Design styling service can now also be provided,” says Maree. “This can turn a ‘move in day’ into a ‘walk in day’ or ‘reveal day’ for your one-of-a-kind home.”

Perched on the last remaining grassy vacant block in a subdivision, this remarkable family home captures the views beyond from deep within.

The homeowners, a couple with three grown-up children and three dogs, were looking for a dynamic home that connected them to the sea views and its sublime coastal location. The four-bedroom home has two living rooms, one has access to the garden, the other takes in the glorious views. There’s a generous kitchen with butler’s pantry that spills out to the leafy garden. There’s ample space for entertaining outside, with a complete outdoor kitchen and plunge pool.

The dwelling is constructed primarily from concrete and timber. Rebekah Clayton, director of Clayton Orszaczky, says the home is a celebration of natural materials. “Green design was at the forefront of decision making,” she explains. The sloping site offered an opportunity to build a connection between the home and green spaces that would embrace it.

Gerringong House

Rebekah says one of the first decisions they made was to create a level “plinth” which they called the “garden plinth”, so the garden terraces could be directly accessed from the ground floor. “This plinth is retained around all sides and then there is a large buffer between the plinth and the boundaries which we filled with native plants endemic to the area,” she explains.

It’s a home that seeks to unify the built environment with its organic surrounds, and it does so with poise. The coastal setting inspired the decision to angle the building 25 degrees so it could take in the views. “The idea was that the dwelling could have some transparency so the view could be seen and felt from deep within the long plan,” shares Rebekah.

Large cantilevers protect the openings on the ground floor. Rebekah says the form of the building created a series of terraces. “We named them morning terrace, lunchtime terrace and afternoon terrace depending on their location and the time of day they would be enjoyed,” she says.

Gerringong House

When deciding on finishes, a fully off-form concrete finish was considered, but it wouldn’t provide the waterproofing and thermal properties they wanted. Instead, they opted for a combination of blockwork and internal studwork, and micro cement render. “This age-old rendering technique provides a beautiful finish, but also offers a fully waterproof surface — perfect for bathrooms,” notes Rebekah.

The home has an innate feel of strength and intransience; it was built to last. “We wanted the home to feel warm, permanent, robust and protective,” says Rebekah. For her, the true triumph of this design is the views accessed from well within the floor plan. “We had placed ladders all over the site before we commenced designing, but seeing that moment in my head and then seeing it in reality was very special,” she reflects.

Gerringong House

The home has good passive solar design. Windows are double-glazed; the walls are a combination of block and internal stud work. The entire upper floor is clad in a timber screen product by Abodo, a decision that Rebekah says didn’t help the budget, but the environmental gains were significant.

It’s made from New Zealand pine forest and cooked to break its cellular structure, becoming almost like a hardwood but lightweight. “The screen provides an added layer of insulation around the building and protects the internal skin from heat loss and gain,” she explains. “Cladding the house in Abodo was a leap of faith to test a new material — one which serves as a benchmark for how we should grow, supply, modify, and ultimately install timber on our buildings.”

For Rebekah and the team, one of the most memorable moments was on the day the large timber screen was installed. It was a windy day and the screen started rolling forward out onto the street. “The guys hadn’t yet put the block in that stops the screen; luckily the head contractor was quick on his feet and it was rolled back and fixed in place,” she recalls with a laugh.

Norwood Gold House in South Australia is vibrant and lively, overflowing with energy and fun, yet it also evokes a sense of tranquility and calm.

This remarkable and unique two-storey home is a beautiful, charming, and undeniably quirky breath of fresh air. Tim Fenton, associate architect from Grieve Gillett Architects, describes it as an abstract deconstruction of a family home. “It’s arranged through a play of angles, folds and facades, of contrasting yet complementary materials, colours and textures,” he muses.

The home is effervescent; it bubbles over with vibrancy and fun, but it also offers a feeling of restfulness, of calm. Tim says the brief was to follow design principles of Vastu Shastra, a 5000-year-old traditional Hindu philosophy of architecture. “It outlines various spatial arrangements and design principles to promote positive energy and harmony within the home,” he says.

This abode also explores the intricacies and nuances between public and private realms that exist within and around a residential property. “The home shares itself with the street, but also creates a sanctuary for its inhabitants,” notes Tim.

Like Alice peering through the looking glass, exploring this distinctive abode is an adventure. There are open living spaces with a cocktail bar, five bedrooms and a study, as well as six ensuites. It has a theatre room, grand piano mezzanine, sunken play area, a winter sunroom and so much more.

Tim says that with Vastu Shastra concepts, importance is placed on capturing morning sunlight in the living spaces by facing east. “The morning sun not only illuminates the physical space, it’s associated with rejuvenation and mental clarity and invites auspicious energy into our lives,” he shares.

The home is light-filled and uplifting; it’s a welcoming and joyous space. There are skylights and large expanses of glazing, and it is bathed in sunlight throughout the day, which promotes positive energy and an organic connection to nature. Tim says the inspired design grew from a collection of concepts, ideas and principles — among them the clients’ own dreams and aspirations. “There’s also the orientation to the sun, the natural poetry available in the existing site and local context, and the overlay of Vastu design concepts,” Tim comments.

Norwood, Gold House, SA

There is a bold and dynamic interplay of colours and textures that create a sense of whimsy. Tim says they also drew inspiration from the colour gold. “It captures sunlight on its surface, diffusing, spreading and shimmering, reflecting and redirecting. It changes based on surface textures and finishes,” he says.

Holistically, this project seeks to capture light and life, says Tim. “It reflects the passing of the day, as direct and dappled sunlight slowly swims across the floors and walls and shadows creep in its wake. It’s optimistic and positive, but also calming and soothing.”

When asked what his favourite part is, Tim likens it to a box of chocolates — he says he can’t choose just one. “It’s like a collection of tasty chocolates that make up the whole flavour experience!”

Norwood, Gold House, SA

There’s the golden folded copper, the deconstructed verandah with steel sections at seemingly impossible angles, and the random stick fence with the garden spilling through. Taking it inside, the visual feast continues. There’s the playful tiles with distressed textures and vibrant colours, the painted art murals, the giant yellow concealed doors, the hammock hanging in front of a window in the study for thinking in the sky, and that’s just to whet your appetite.

Stepping over the threshold of this home is a journey like no other, reflects Tim. “The abundance of materiality, texture and colour, the way that virtually every room has a different experience to each other — it’s as if you have walked through a portal,” he says.

There are many fabulous elements to this project and finally Tim does confess there is one absolute stand out for him: “The freedom of expression and bravery of the clients and the sense of fun, playfulness and adventure that runs through the soul of the home,” he shares.
