Australians love nothing better than a refreshing dip in their backyard pool. To keep it as fabulous and inviting as the day it was installed, a renovation can really boost its appeal.

According to Beaumont Tiles design specialist Christie Wood, the biggest challenge most face when considering a pool renovation is working out where to start, given the plethora of styles to choose from in designing the ideal outdoor retreat.

“It can be confusing, but a golden rule when it comes to a pool is getting the right combination of large-format and mosaics to really level up your upcoming renovation,” she says.

“To help you strike this balance, you can use tools such as Beaumont’s “What’s My Style?” to identify which look best suits your personality, likes and lifestyle, and “BeVisual Live” to then visualise how certain tiles will look in your pool area.”

Christie says for those who are not so confident with selecting a style, there are three sure-fire and timeless looks that can turn any pool area into a private home retreat for years to come.

Calming coastal charm

Coastal is a marvellous style for a pool area, given its affinity to the glistening waters of captivating beach shorelines.

“To achieve the coastal style, use a lighter waterline tile as it will give your water a bright-blue colour which creates a natural allusion to your favourite beachside sanctuary,” says Christie.

“I particularly love the combination of our Splash Mosaic coupled with Beaumont’s Legend Sandstone Natural or our Lagoon Almond large-format tiles to create a coastal look that just pops.”

Both large-format tiles come in Beaumont’s exclusive Microtec range which, through its advanced glazing technology, creates a slip-resistant surface with a safe grip finish that activates when wet.

“They are perfect for the coastal style and the look is guaranteed to make you swoon when it comes to life!”

Wonderful wanderlust

Wanderlust is another style that is on trend and when used in a pool can create an exotic holiday paradise, with it being all about exploring cultures and connecting with your sense of adventure while having a bit of fun along the way.

“This style lets you choose pool mosaics which are fun and tantalisingly eye-catching, and hints to your previous travels,” explains Christie. “For example, you could add mesmerising mosaic curved steps that ooze luxury European hotels or stunning Moroccan palaces.

“Consider coupling an embellished patterned tile like Flourish Motif Blue with a creamier look, such as the Microtec Density Light Grey or Attica Grey to contrast with the waterline tile. This also enables the floor tile to seamlessly transition from the pool area and into your home by carrying on the large formats indoors.”

Charming contemporary

Finally, a great option for pools is contemporary. This is an Australian favourite due to its simplistic form and the focus on liveability and reduced clutter.

“Pool areas can really lean into this minimalist approach by keeping things simple and calming for the maximum chill in your poolside retreat,” says Christie.

“For a moodier contemporary look, I would recommend using an Omni Stone Charcoal or Basalt Charcoal large-format tile from the Microtec range to create a mirrored look for your pool, though you need to be sure these tiles are well shaded as they can get warm on your toes in those summer months.”

Christie suggests matching this with a Fire Fingers mosaic in Linen to make the most of your contemporary look, creating a beautiful oasis that invites you to take a dip.
