The Industry’s Best-Kept Secret Opens Its Doors

For one day only, the trade doors open to homeowners. Here’s why the design community are already marking their calendars.

There is a certain kind of home that announces itself quietly, not through price, but through decision-making. The tile that wasn’t sourced from a showroom catalogue. The fabric that hadn’t yet landed in any retail collection. The light fitting that stopped guests mid-sentence. These homes share a common origin story: the people behind them had access that most don’t.

On Saturday 13 June, that access opens, briefly, to you.

Design Show Australia is, for most of the year, the industry’s best-kept professional secret. Held at ICC Sydney in Darling Harbour, it is where Australia’s leading architects, interior designers and builders do their real work: touching, comparing and specifying the products that will define the country’s most significant interiors over the next twelve months. More than 250 exhibitors. More than 1,000 products. Brands including Kave Home, Buster + Punch, Natuzzi Italia, King Living and Cane-line, alongside the emerging names that have yet to reach any showroom near you.

Thursday and Friday are trade only. Saturday welcomes homeowners along.

Come with the people designing or building your home

This is not a home show. There are no showbags, no celebrity kitchen demonstrations, no discounted wares. What there is, is the unfiltered view of where Australian design is going and the rare opportunity to walk it alongside the architect, interior designer or builder you’re working with.

The homeowners who will get the most from Saturday are those who arrive with a project in mind and a professional at their side: someone who can translate what they’re seeing into a specification, a lead time, a decision.

If your home is in the planning stages, or if it exists only in a mood board and a set of ambitions, this is where the conversation between client and creative shifts from abstract to precise. You point to something. They tell you whether it works. That exchange, across 1,000 products in a single afternoon, is extraordinarily efficient.

The full picture, under one roof

Design Show Australia is co-located with Kitchen+Bath Show, the only dedicated kitchen and bathroom trade event in the country, and Futurebuild Australia, which covers the materials, systems and technologies shaping the next decade of construction. One registration. Three shows. The complete view of what a considered home is made of, from structural decisions to the textile on the daybed.

The Textile + Furnishings Village presents fabrics, wallcoverings, rugs and soft furnishings the way they were always meant to be experienced: by hand, in context, against one another. Discovery Lane surfaces the emerging and independent brands that haven’t yet reached mass distribution, the names that will be on every best-dressed mood board within the year.

When you need a moment, the Design Show Bar & Lounge, sponsored by Natuzzi Italia, is a considered retreat at the centre of it all.

Trade professionals register for free. Homeowner Early-bird tickets are available now for $30, rising to $50 from 13 June and on the door. Register now at designshow.com.au
